Liveblog: Game 11: San Jose dominant in 2-0 win

Niemi

First shutout of the season

Antti Niemei had an easy night.

The Canadiens managed only 22 shots, few of which troubled the Sharks' goaltender.

Carey Price made 33 saves but was beaten twice by Logan Couture.

Actually, beaten once.

The Sharks' young centre tipped one past Price on a power play, then notched his second on a weird bounce off a stanchion, with Price behind the Canadiens net and out of the play.

The better team won, peeps.

Couture again

Logan Coputure got his second of the game on a weird play.

Patrick Marleau shot a puck in along the dasher. Carey Price went behind his net to play it, but the puck hit a stanchion and bounced into the slot, where Couture had a gimme.

Sharks get on the board

On San Jose's thiurd power play of the game, Logan Couture tipped a Joe Thornton pass by Carey Price.

The Canadiens came to life late in the period. They got excellent shifts from the Tomas Plekanec and David Desharnais lines. The flurry finally drew a San Jose penalty late in the period.

Shots were 11-7 for the visitors, 22-15 on the game.

Andrei Markov has FOUR giveaways.

Scoreless 20 mins

San Jose had an 11-8 shot advantage – SOP for them.

The Canadiens killed two penalties.

Good hockey. Up and down the ice.

Toughest yet

Cue that ominous theme music from Jaws.

San Jose brings the NHL's best record to the Bell Centre Saturday night. The Sharks are the most dangerous visitors we've seen since the Leafs opened the season in Montreal.

San Jose is 3-1-1 on the road, 8-1-1 in their last 10. After 10 games, the Sharks's goal differential is an eye-popping plus-23.

The visitors are coming off a game in Boston where they outshot the Bruins 37-19 only to lose on David Krejci's last-second goal. It was San Jose's first setback in regulation time of the young season.

The visitors are a bit banged-up. The Sharks will be without Dan Boyle, Brent Burns, Martin Havlat, Adam Burish, Raffi Torres and possibly Tommy Wingels.

The goaltending duel features two Stéphane Waite pupils: Carey Price and Antti Niemi, whom Waite coached in Chicago.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

Why is every Saturday night at the Bell Centre an automatic loss? Do we ever win Saturday at home? It’s getting ridiculous.

I’m going to the Rangers game on Saturday next month, and I’m already figuring it will be a blowout against us.

  2. Propwash says:

Look, the Habs lost, but it could have been a blowout the way SJ plays. SJ’s biggest issue is they just can’t get it done in the playoffs.

If you are going to go with small and speedy, you better be fast. Looked like a high school team against college age team.

  4. oldtimerguy says:

so? if you could go back and change the crappy year in 2011 and make the playoffs for a round or 2, would you do it and give up getting galchenyuk?

    hahahahahaha….go on…answer it. be honest.

  5. kalevine says:

looked like a junior team playing an NHL team

  6. Cdnman1 says:

Sick of Boone saying how great SJ is. Terrible refs and a BS goal was the difference tonight.

    Number 25 in 2014!

  7. Habbu says:

    I think the expression is………..schooled

  8. Storman says:

Next summit someone should bring a copy of this game to poop on

  9. Mondou6 says:

Honestly, I’m completely not impressed by the Sharks after this game.

They got every single break, all night long, against our decimated team, and still barely won. They are going nowhere come playoff time.

  10. danhabsfan says:

    Horrible effort… Shameful

  11. twilighthours says:

Waaaaaay too easy a game for San Jose

  12. MICP says:

    as good as a victory!!!!

    Go habs go!

  13. LuckedOut says:

Habs lose every game where the childrens hospital visits.

  14. Habbu says:

Felt all night like the Sharks have had an extra player on the ice…..their coverage is unbelievable

  15. durocher says:

I think the last time the Summit took place, the Habs were also shutout.

  16. oldtimerguy says:

nice play by pleks there….way to go!

  17. LuckedOut says:

To say the refs cost us this game would be a mistake. You can’t win a game without scoring a goal and while the PP would have helped accomplish that, a team with heart would be able to score 5-5

  18. RAM_TOUGH says:

WTF is the point of getting Price out?

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  19. Storman says:

    Summit this

  20. Samovich says:

P.K playing listless, so is the whole team

  21. MattZ says:

Being shut out at home is pretty sad… The Sharks are a strong team and playing great, but the Habs generated almost no chances to score.

  22. RAM_TOUGH says:

SJ was good tonight, however they scored on their 3rd PP & a fluky bounce.

After seeing that replay again on the 2nd goal, if Price would have hustled & dove he may have stopped that puck with his stick!

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  23. LuckedOut says:

    This is painfull.

  24. Habitant in Surrey says:

…after watching most of this I must conclude We are not in the class of the Sharks in many areas

…after a day of seeing the Als self-destruct, the Impact look like a shadow of themselves against Turdranna of all teams, and Larry Robinson the eminence gris behind the Sharks bench, I may fly a red-eye to Montreal to get skunked with Ian

  25. Mondou6 says:

SJ may be the better team, but they were 100% gifted the first goal by the refs, and nothing was called on them all night long.

It’s hard to win a game when the other team can do nothing that gets called.

Without the refs’ assistance, this was a 0-0 game going into the 3rd.

  26. Habbu says:

Can’t get anywhere near their net….with or without the puck

  27. zip by says:

boone – have to disagree: not the sharks A game – rather a freak bounce off the boards and some reffing that penalized the habs for marginal calls yet did nothing on the diaz trip or the moen cut…. maybe they are the better team – but they had almost supernatural help this evening

  28. oldtimerguy says:

If you could take back that crappy season in 2011 and as a result we didn’t get galchenyuk, would you do it? :-)

hope the sharks seal it with an empty netter….hahahahaha

  29. durocher says:

Eugene Bouchard — the highlight of the game

  30. MICP says:

A morale victory that we will take.

While the sharks have many injuries, the score still could have been much worse.

We need to be proud of our Habs

  31. Storman says:

We need more cow bell, soon we will have to try and score from the two goal line

  32. Da Hema says:

Let’s try the reverse jinx — I hope Niemi gets a shutout!

  33. slapshot777 says:

I don’t expect every call to be made but at least half of them

  34. slapshot777 says:

I would rip a high hard one right around the officials ears just to have him wake up

  35. Danno says:

We need a goal so bad right NOW

This team is still far from being a contender

  37. Storman says:

MT coaching the shit out of this game

  38. slapshot777 says:

What id the point of that shot from Diaz. What can anyone do with a shot like that

  39. Habbu says:

Hhhmmmm……..thought with the Sharks being on a road trip…..they might be a little tired for the third……guess not

  40. AH says:

Perfect nickname for Gallagher: TIMEX; the younger crowd won’t get it though.

  41. Samovich says:

Diaz dumps it in from the slot

  42. kingcammy says:

Only Montreal comes into the 3rd down 0-1 and get outshot 9-3 so far. Habs r a good team and all just not good enuff to face da elite. Oh well

  43. Propwash says:

…and NO penalty on that either..

Not hard to slow Subban down when you can grab, hook, trip and throw him down without calls.

  45. danhabsfan says:

Why does Subban always like to cross check?

  46. Cdnman1 says:

I wish Suban would stay on his feet!

    Number 25 in 2014!

  47. zip by says:

gally – that was clearly a shoulder to the head which was driven into the boards – any of the habs penalties this game were much less offensive than this – you really have to say the reffing efffing….

  48. BrianSkrudland says:

Beaulieu confused for Bouliion again by Cole. Please retire, sir!

  49. T-roy West says:

Its nice to have a speedy team but if you can’t physically enforce your will in the offensive zone then forget about it. We don’t have to have small players to be fast.

  50. durocher says:

We don’t have a true fourth line tonight that will crash and bang that can generate any sort of energy by hitting and running into guys. Begin wasn’t much of a fighter, but he used to roll around looking to nail some opposing players, and that used to get the crowd going.

  51. moser17 says:

Boone: “3P 8:55 Let’s be candid: It will be a miracle if Brendan Gallagher lasts 10 years in the NHL.”

I’d say the prayers of two dozen rural Quebecois parishes are being offered for him every Sunday if he doesn’t end up on the IR by mid-season.

  52. johnnylarue says:

Here’s hoping the Habs give the Summiteers something to cheer about before this is through…!

  53. RAM_TOUGH says:

Looked like a head shot to me!

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  54. Da Hema says:

Mike: Let’s be candid here too. Half the Habs look like they don’t give a shit at all. San Jose is obviously a superior team in so many ways, but too many Canadiens are indifferent out there. I feel sorry for the fans who paid so much money to watch a bunch of players who, for whatever reasons, are scared (Diaz) or content with their contracts (Desharnais) or whatever.

  55. AndyF says:

This is the worst-reffed game I’ve seen in a long time.

  56. Samovich says:

    Lets be Candid: DD sucks

  57. Mondou6 says:

If Gallagher was on a team with enforcers, he’d be fine.

On this team, he’s a marked man, targeted by every other team.

  58. Et le but says:

It’ll be a miracle if we don’t see Gallagher back on the bench this period…told the trainer he was ok…what heart

  59. slapshot777 says:

I got a bunch of monkeys who could do a better job than these officials.

  60. Storman says:

Sorry all for showing my pain,,, but Venting time FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF I misssssssssssssssssss laska

  61. Bill says:

I wish the HIO app didn’t use exclamation marks for the alert when the other team scores

  62. RAM_TOUGH says:

Price’s first time playing with these boards? What is that suppose to mean? That will happen 1 in 100 times. Price made the same play 29 other goalies would.

    Guts-Glory-Ram

  63. C-Sword says:

    Sharks vs sardines

  64. durocher says:

Lot of respect for Gally — you know he wanted to stay on. “I’m good”

  65. SKHab says:

Principal point of contact was the head but whatever, right?

    • ffenliv says:

      What?

Gallagher lost an edge making the hard turn behind the net. His face smacked the boards as a result of the hit that was coming. I’m not sure whoever the Shark was hit him anywhere near his head.

      Even the Habs weren’t complaining.

It was a clean hit with a sad result. Nothing anyone can do about that one.

  66. twilighthours says:

That really could have been interference

  67. Danno says:

    That isn’t a penalty.

But chip the puck over the glass and it’s automatic two minutes

    Nooooo Moen!

  70. ffenliv says:

Early on, when the broadcast showed the ludicrous shots for: shots against stat that the Sharks have racked up this season, I thought the Habs could at least hold them to +10. Now it looks like the Sharks will be ticking that advantage up a bit.

What a ridiculously solid game they play.

  71. danhabsfan says:

Boone: the Guys are NOT hustling, except for a portion of the 2nd period, and then, SJ had a hard time with them.

  72. The Dude says:

    More character for Moen..

  73. durocher says:

Habs have had too many useless blind shots/passes from the perimeter

  74. Propwash says:

    Lovely… Moen hurt.
