Liveblog: Game 2: Canadiens 4 – Flyers 1

Canadiens head west on a high

It wouldn't do to be winless heading into a road trip.

The Canadiens avoided that with a superb home-ice effort.

Brian Gionta opened the scoring eight minutes into the game, and the home team blew it open with a three-goal third period.

Lars Eller got his third of the young season. Others scorers were Brendan Gallagher and Rene Bourque.

Vincent Lecavalier spoiled Carey Price's bid for a shutout.

The Canadiens outshot the visitors 34-23, including a 16-8 third-period advantage that snuffed out any hope of a comeback.

Canadiens notch first win, 4-1

Third-period goals by Lars Eller, Brendan Gallagher and Rene Bourque salted this one away.

Vincent Lecavalier, booed all night, spoiled Carey Price's shutout bid.

Canadiens 1 - Flyers 0 after two

Quiet second period.

Each team had eight shots.

Canadiens power-play is sputtering: Zippo on five opportunities

Canadiens 1 - Flyers 0

From the edge of the crease, captain Brian Gionta converted a nice Rene Bourque pass for the only goal of the first period.

Canadiens had a 10-7 shot advantage but couldn't convert on two power-plays.

But the much-maligned penalty kill was perfect.

Clash of the winless

Like the Canadiens, the Flyers dropped their home opener to the rampaging Toronto Maple Leafs.

Two teams in search of their first wins clash at the Bell Centre Saturday night.

This is Daniel Brière's first crack at his former teammates.

And it's Vincent (pause for boos and catcalls) Lecavalier's first visit to Montreal as a Flyer.

The new 24CH series begins on RDS after the game and L'Antichambre Saturday night.

Fans will love it.

Slicker editing and a faster pace than last season's series. Best moment is during a training camp function where vets introduce the rookies.

Carey Price steals the show, reducing his coach to helpless laughter.

P.K. is good, too.

This is the best part of the season for me following Montreal to Calgary Edmonton and Vancouver I would work threw Christmas for this time off

  2. fastfreddy says:

Unfortunately, the Habs can’t /won’t trade DD because he was Bergevin’s pet project signing. I believe MB said something of the following,”We had to sign Desharnais,or somebody would have scooped him up.” Realy MB???? Who would have scooped up DD? Nobody at 3mil a yr. Now I’m not totally against MB for signing DD, I’m not happy at the length of the term. 1-2 yrs. would have been okay, not the 4 yrs. he received, too lengthy for my liking. That’s why they can’t trade DD right now, MB will look foolish.

    CH = Les Glorieux!!!

  3. Timo says:

Did anyone get injured in Laffs-Sens game? An effing 3 pointer… as expected.

  4. ClutchNGrab says:

Watching EDM vs VAN and remembered all those years we had a d-man on the 4th line for the PP. Streit, Weber, MAB.

Happy to not see that this year, hope we don’t have to see that again.

Also, if PK can only play on the PK when another d-man is in the box. I would like to see him play the full 2 minutes of the PP, we don’t have a fourth offensive d-man anyway.

  5. Timo says:

An ok game. EGG line did great again. But I gotta give props to Michael Therrien… he minimized the amount of total suck but putting both Briere and DD on the same line. That way only one line truly sucked tonight.

Someone enlighten me by providing an example of Diaz’s great offensive skills and contribution on PP. I think we all pretty much agree that as far as his defensive game he is useless, but there were arguments flying about his great stick handling, puck moving and shooting abilities. I’d like an example please.

Next, I will be greeting Habs at the Calgary Airport with a big bouquet of roses made with love and care for Michael Therrien.

  6. JO says:

Feel sorry for white. Heart of a lion but he couldn’t beat his sister in a fight. need another tough guy who could put up points. we’re still to soft. tough teams will eat us up.

one of the best teams in the league for skill and speed but that’s where it ends. must say the 1st two lines battled tonight to get a win.

philly didn’t seem to play tough like they usually do. maybe a sign they had enough of their coach!!

  7. tab says:

    How bout the “galler line”

  8. tab says:

Nice to see someone else noticed Patrick holland, he’s nhl skilled 4 sure but habs need to make room for him probably after decision on dd

  9. tab says:

Justin Schultz looks like he will end up challenging for Norris with his offense skills reminds me of coffee

  10. Bill says:

    Knocking wood, Danno

  11. tab says:

Jason labarbara first shot already looks better than dubnyk

  12. tab says:

I like your idea of brier at centre with patch and prust that would be great line with a bit of everything

  13. Mr. Biter says:

    Quick hits:
    1) B Gally next D Gilmour
    2) Prust is playing hurt (you picked that one out Bill) and can’t fight
    3) White looks like Gomer’s younger brother with the bad haircut. Was Timo the Barber?
    4) Flyers tried to rough up some of the boy’s in the 3rd and Moen and White stood up to the task. Still need a Parros type player
    4) never question Eller’s pain threshold (after he went in the hallway vs the Bruins 2 years ago in playoffs and popped his shoulder back in)
    5) Where have all the Halekites gone?
    6) why does RDS mute the Refs calls on the ice? To much English?

    Mr. Biter
    No Guts No Glory

  14. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

We all said that when Chucky made the team last year, there was no room for Eller, DD and Plekanec on this team and that eventually one would get traded. Plekanec was always the most logical candidate. He will be probably be dealt in the off-season.

“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin

  15. JO says:

I like the 1st and 2nd line. when Pacioretty returns put him on the 3rd line with Briere at center Prust on the right side

4th line DD at center with Moen and White/Parros

  16. WhatUp says:

in the misleading stat category: Habs went 2 for 9 on the pp. man do they ever need to fix it if they want to make the playoffs. DD and DB had almost identical stats tonight..was a fan of DD but if something remotely interesting is offered I hope MB pulls the trigger

  17. tab says:

Brier, gorges, Christian Thomas and a second round pick to coyotes for Keith Yandle, habs need one more dominant defenseman

  18. on2ndthought says:

TOI was interesting tonight. Other than Rene Bourque (who was both solid and solid), the LAB line got the most time. Expect that to continue on into the road trip, until others start to contribute, Not so much a bad Flyers team as a fine effort by the good guys.

cooked up in the LAB: Lars, Alex, Brendan

    “a cannonading drive”

  19. tab says:

Yanik weber is playing wing tonight not sure why no one gives him a chance

  20. tab says:

Devon dubnik is all over the place tonight like how price has a lot less movement in net now seems more consistent

  21. Subban in Sochi says:

Would have been fun to watch Lars Eller in Sochi-If Denmark had made the Olympics in hockey…He’ll have a nice break to prepare for a 20+ game Playoff run.

    Cannonading drive!!

  22. Danno says:

Happy MT did not resort to JM hockey in the third. That early goal by Eller was the back breaker. And they didn’t sit back. Loved it.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

    • Subban in Sochi says:

Under Jacques Martin the Hamilton Bulldogs would win 2013-2014 Calder Cup with Galchenyuk & Tinordi setting up Gallagher for Cup clinching goal. Meanwhile, Eller would play 9 minutes on Habs’ 4th line.

      Cannonading drive!!

    • Dunboyne Mike says:

      EXCELLENT point, Danno.

I, too, was dreading the possibility of “defensive-shell” sport, such as is rampant in premiership football over this side of the pond. In fact, many soccer teams go into JM-mode to protect A TIE!

Congrats on 5000, btw. How the hell do you keep a tally?

  23. tab says:

That kid holland looked real good in exhibitions sees ice real well excellent passer would like to see him up with bournival as his winger and watch them go but we have to carry these 4th line full of pluggers cause that’s how the games played

    • neumann103 says:

Yes, Tinordi and Bournival were the obvious standouts from camp, but Patrick Holland was really good in all three zones and looked like he would be the next logical guy (if this was done on merit)

      “Et le but!”

  24. JohnBellyful says:

    Friday: Ticats beat Argos
    Saturday: Habs beat Flyers
    Sunday: Packers beat Lions
Man, this is turnin’ out to be some weekend. Sportswise.

  25. tab says:

Actually dd and brier are to much alike but at least db can handle the puck and hit people with Gretzky type passes he should move to centre with patch

  26. habs1992 says:

In other news DD looked terrible again, why is he on this team.

    I support Carey Price
    “Habs Insider”

  27. B says:

2 more goals (including the game winner) for Jérémy Grégoire tonight, that’s 8 in his first 7 games. Strong start!

    –Go Habs Go!–

  28. Sportfan says:

No shots for DD or Briere, OH REALLY.

  29. Sportfan says:

Gally, Chucky, Eller, Subban and hopefully Patches as long as he doesn’t become an injury prone kind look like real deal hockey players and have a lot of quality to them. Should be a lot of great Hockey years ahead.

  30. jedimyrmidon says:

    From HFBoards:

“Beside getting rid of me as a linemate, what makes your line so succesful?” – Darche to Eller on the AC

GLefrancoisRC: #Habs Eller: “I prefer Kid line to Egg line.” Moi: “You feel like you’re a kid?” Eller: “More than an egg.”

    Pure gold.

  31. tab says:

Sub ban is join to hurt a few goalies this year his shot is a lot harder now

  32. naweed235 says:

I gotta say, I love Pleks for everything he does for this team. But if Eller keeps it up and fully progresses into that 2 way center that we’ve been seeing lately, and Chucky getting enough experience under his belt, Pleks becomes very tradable. I think we can easily land a solid prospect or a 1st rounder for him come trade deadline.

  33. Sportfan says:

Wow three point night for Raymond I know he isn’t a bad player and had wished Montreal had taken a shot with him.

  34. Epic says:

I thin Mr Boone needs to upgrade to jackrabbits or something like that.
These Hamsters seem to be suffering from Markov knees and Crosby head.

  35. habs1992 says:

Can we just relax, we beat a terrible Philly team, We got to low when we lose and to high when we win.

    I support Carey Price
    “Habs Insider”

  36. tab says:

    Gorges 496 games, 13 goals

  37. habsfan0 says:

Briere still looking for 1st goal as a Hab.
He’ll get it on the road trip.

  38. tab says:

Galenchuk is great eventually #1 centre with Eller running the second line great 1 2 punch
