Liveblog: Game 2: Canadiens 4 – Flyers 1

VinnyBriere

Canadiens head west on a high

It wouldn't do to be winless heading into a road trip.

The Canadiens avoided that with a superb home-ice effort.

Brian Gionta opened the scoring eight minutes into the game, and the home team blew it open with a three-goal third period.

Lars Eller got his third of the young season. Others scorers were Brendan Gallagher and Rene Bourque.

Vincent Lecavalier spoiled Carey Price's bid for a shutout.

The Canadiens outshot the visitors 34-23, including a 16-8 third-period advantage that snuffed out any hope of a comeback.

Canadiens notch first win, 4-1

Third-period goals by Lars Eller, Brendan Gallagher and Rene Bourque salted this one away.

Vincent Lecavalier, booed all night, spoiled Carey Price's shutout bid.

Canadiens 1 - Flyers 0 after two

Quiet second period.

Each team had eight shots.

Canadiens power-play is sputtering: Zippo on five opportunities

Canadiens 1 - Flyers 0

From the edge of the crease, captain Brian Gionta converted a nice Rene Bourque pass for the only goal of the first period.

Canadiens had a 10-7 shot advantage but couldn't convert on two power-plays.

But the much-maligned penalty kill was perfect.

Clash of the winless

Like the Canadiens, the Flyers dropped their home opener to the rampaging Toronto Maple Leafs.

Two teams in search of their first wins clash at the Bell Centre Saturday night.

This is Daniel Brière's first crack at his former teammates.

And it's Vincent (pause for boos and catcalls) Lecavalier's first visit to Montreal as a Flyer.

The new 24CH series begins on RDS after the game and L'Antichambre Saturday night.

Fans will love it.

Slicker editing and a faster pace than last season's series. Best moment is during a training camp function where vets introduce the rookies.

Carey Price steals the show, reducing his coach to helpless laughter.

P.K. is good, too.

I just watched the Eller goal from tonight and I have to mention this. Galchenyuk passes are lazers and they are not only on the tape every time, but it looks like he somehow makes his passes stick to his teammates sticks.

  2. tab says:

I like gorges just that he brings zero offensive threat no shot don’t think in today’s game you can be one dimensional

  3. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

EGG line? Why not just call them the “first line”? LOL

Thanks for coming out Jay Rosehill. Your 2 1/2 minutes over 4 shifts were memorable.

    Knock Knock..
    Who’s there?
    Jaroslav Halak..
    Jaroslav Halak Who?
    EGGsactly!!

  6. tab says:

Tinordi seems like he’s got lots of puck confidence something I have never seen from gorges, mr 2 seconds with the puck and I have to get rid of it

  7. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

All I was looking for this season was for the young players to improve. So far so good with Bournival being an excellent bonus. They can’t take this kid out of the line-up.

  8. habs-hampton says:

So PK play 28+ minutes, the EGG line was the best line and finally got good PP minutes, and Carey had a solid game.

Sounds like a formula for MT to keep his job. I hope he noticed how we got the W, and remembers!

  9. Danno says:

The sky would be falling pretty hard about now if we lost this one.

    Winning changes everything…

How does Pierre McGuire feel about the Halak trade?

  11. Whatever says:

    They won. Yeah.

There would be more posts to read if they lost. Oooooodles more.

  12. Habfan10912 says:

Eller could very well be emerging into a special player. I thought our vets answered the bell better tonight as well. Gionta, Bourque and Moan all deserve a nod and Price looked very confident and sure of. himself back there.
And Galchenyuk, Gallagher and PK are just a joy to watch.

  13. Stevie.Ray says:

Eller: “I prefer Kid line to Egg line.”
Guiallme Lafranscois: “You feel like you’re a kid?”
    Eller: “More than an egg.”

  14. jsaz says:

Boring game in my opinion. Very slow. prust still injured or something is up with him, moen is stepping up a bit, bourqe is playing good. Eller, gallys are the future. Plecanec should be traded while he’s worth a bit. This team still needa a lot of work. Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, will roll through this team every time they play unless we get………..some size and better D. Sorry for being a downer but our D sucks and dd is useless.

  15. tab says:

Tinordi will be ranked up with Robinson when his career is done

  16. Bill says:

In other news, Craig Anderson, one of the most overrated players in the league, had a rough night and the Leafs came back from being down 4-2 and won in a shootout.

The reason there are less posts this season during games is because the site has become too slow. I could not even access the page during the last game. HIO needs to get their act together or there won’t be another another million posts.

  19. jols101 says:

I have been hard on Therrien but his ice distribution was close to perfect tonight. Not just because we won but because he gave guys ice-time on merit.
Only little quibble is I wish he would show some more confidence in Tinordi and give him some more ice. That is all.

  20. Stevie.Ray says:

I missed the game because I was coaching my volleyball team to a Gold Medal. Sounds like I missed a good one.

It looks like Price had another solid game. I watched the Lecavalier goal and ranked it on a 1-10 difficulty level like I did last game. 10 being impossible, 1 being my Grandmother could save that.

    Lecavalier goal: 9/10

A power play point shot that gets deflected (perhaps twice). The rebound is kicked away to the corner appropriately, however with not enough mustard. The open man is able to gather the puck and shoot it past a sprawling Carey Price. The reason I don’t give it a 10/10 is because he was nearly able to save it, and because the rebound should have been kicked all the way to the corner (even though it’s quite impressive he was able to make such a controlled save off of a deflection in the first place). This was simply a hockey goal. No one really to blame.

    Thoughts?

  21. C-Sword says:

Damn, the Blues are destroying the Panthers, 7-0

  22. tab says:

Think Diaz adds puck moving ability first pass but needs to have large Dman with him to compensate for his size put him with the rookie

  23. twilighthours says:

    Bork was great, too

  24. HabFab says:

600th game for Plekanec – all Montreal
400th game for Gorges in a Montreal uniform (96 for San Jose)

    • Stevie.Ray says:

Hard to believe that it’s Plekanec’s ninth season with the Habs already. I remember when he first came into the league and he earned everyone’s respect by being our hardest working center on what was, if I remember correctly, a fairly subpar team. I hope we are all grateful for what he has done for this franchise. Very underrated player.

This site is in dire need of more energetic hamsters. Crashes almost every game night. Too bad really, cause Boones blog is enjoyable.

  28. twilighthours says:

Yes indeed, Eller is looking like our #1 centre.

  29. CHicoHab says:

18 seconds left and up 4-1 Habs were still pressing. Awesome!!!

  30. Da Hema says:

    Mike Boone:

Saturday night hockey, and there are only 500 comments here?

Perhaps fixing the “Gateway timeout” fail that we all experience when we try to access this site during games could explain the declining popularity of HIO.

  31. The Gonk says:

Lars Eller is our best player. Price was awesome too. Our D is a bit of mess however: Subban and Tinordi make a great 1 and 6 but what’s in between is begging for trouble. Good start for Bournival. DD and Briere need to show they’re relevant.

  32. Danno says:

To get to the playoffs you can’t allow yourselves to lose two games in a row too often. Great bounce-back game by the boys.

  33. slyCH says:

Eller. That’s the only defining word for the game, and the future. Eller.

  34. Bill says:

Nice third period for the Habs. Good night for the top two lines: two points for each member, except Plekanec with the one.

Eller led forwards in ice-time. Subban played over 28 minutes. Therrien got the HIO memo.

DD and Briere’s stats I won’t mention, but let’s say that if Eller and the guys are the EGG line, Desharnais’s could be called the Goose-Egg line.

    Hope no one complains!

    Eller lots of ice time
Briere and DD barely on ice in 3rd
    Markov played well
Price no bad goals ( first star but pretty easy game)
Gionta played well, lead on the ice

    We win.

    Only complaint, Leafs won lol!

Great game. Weber playing for the ‘nucks tonight

  42. Mattyleg says:

    Looked great.
Powerplay needs some work; could’ve been a much more one-sided game if our PP had been on.

Mind you, having said that, their PK looked pretty amazing. Pressure, pressure, pressure.

    Great win Habs!
