Liveblog: Game 2: Canadiens 4 – Flyers 1

Canadiens head west on a high

It wouldn't do to be winless heading into a road trip.

The Canadiens avoided that with a superb home-ice effort.

Brian Gionta opened the scoring eight minutes into the game, and the home team blew it open with a three-goal third period.

Lars Eller got his third of the young season. Others scorers were Brendan Gallagher and Rene Bourque.

Vincent Lecavalier spoiled Carey Price's bid for a shutout.

The Canadiens outshot the visitors 34-23, including a 16-8 third-period advantage that snuffed out any hope of a comeback.

Canadiens notch first win, 4-1

Third-period goals by Lars Eller, Brendan Gallagher and Rene Bourque salted this one away.

Vincent Lecavalier, booed all night, spoiled Carey Price's shutout bid.

Canadiens 1 - Flyers 0 after two

Quiet second period.

Each team had eight shots.

Canadiens power-play is sputtering: Zippo on five opportunities

Canadiens 1 - Flyers 0

From the edge of the crease, captain Brian Gionta converted a nice Rene Bourque pass for the only goal of the first period.

Canadiens had a 10-7 shot advantage but couldn't convert on two power-plays.

But the much-maligned penalty kill was perfect.

Clash of the winless

Like the Canadiens, the Flyers dropped their home opener to the rampaging Toronto Maple Leafs.

Two teams in search of their first wins clash at the Bell Centre Saturday night.

This is Daniel Brière's first crack at his former teammates.

And it's Vincent (pause for boos and catcalls) Lecavalier's first visit to Montreal as a Flyer.

The new 24CH series begins on RDS after the game and L'Antichambre Saturday night.

Fans will love it.

Slicker editing and a faster pace than last season's series. Best moment is during a training camp function where vets introduce the rookies.

Carey Price steals the show, reducing his coach to helpless laughter.

P.K. is good, too.

  1. Rad says:

Habs playing well tonight. I like their chances for the W.

  2. Danno says:

Subban vapourized that chunk of vulcanized rubber.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  3. Luke says:

Even though he isn’t playing centre, I hope to heck they are practicing the heck out of faceoffs with Galchenyuk. It’d be nice to have an option on the team who is 45% or better… Ugh
    (Ok. Goodbye)
    (No wait)…
Nice two zone backhand tape to tape pass by markov. No one in d moves the puck as well as he does. PK included.
    (Ok, see ya!)

  4. Danno says:

IMO, for an embellishment there should only be one guy going off. The faker. Otherwise it’s just a penalty to the other guy.

  5. DipsyDoodler says:

An interesting consequence of Hybrid Icing is that linesmen now have to exercise judgement for the first time.

And they’re up to the standards of their referee colleagues.

  6. NLhabsfan says:

    Jeez what a crap call..

  7. DipsyDoodler says:

    Nice dive Emery.

  8. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Marky second in league last year with 40 turnovers.

  9. Danno says:

    A Markov moment

  10. NLhabsfan says:

I could care less about reliving Habs last game with the LAFFS

  11. habsfan0 says:

Has there been an explanation as to why the red and green lights were moved from the top of the glass to the dasherboards as of last year’s playoffs? Was their previous location obstructing fans’ views in the expensive seats? Have other NHL rinks followed suit?

  12. Da Hema says:

Crap CBC stream. Anyone have a good link to the game?

  13. DipsyDoodler says:

We’re leading 1-0 and playing well.

    In case you hadn’t noticed.

  14. Prairienewf says:

Ain’t popular to say on habs English media site but DD seems very energetic tonight. Nice to see. Hopes he rubs Brieres hands er feet er somethin’

  15. filincal says:

    C’mon no “shorties”!!!

  16. danhabsfan says:

You can’t bench the kids if they make a mistake, then they become afraid to play,a nd it serves nothing

  17. danhabsfan says:

What’s the stupidity of being upset every time you get hit with a big clean check?

  18. Danno says:

    make up call?

  19. danhabsfan says:

Hey… The boys are getting sloppy

  20. Sal from the Hammer says:

Eller’s patience with the puck is his best addition to his game!

  21. adadi says:

Still would like to know what MB was thinking when he signed DD to 4 years. I hope he does not let his ego get in his way if DD does not improve in the next 15 games.

  22. Fransaskois says:

    LE cava L i ER

You can’t spell Lecavalier without ELLER…. coincidence?

  23. Sportfan says:

Briere must think I remember when they used to boo me.

Sports and Entertainment in the link click and enjoy, clicking is fun!

  24. Bill says:

I like Ryan White. He is really different: he’s like an out of the 70s hockey player.

  25. danhabsfan says:

There’s the reason for real no touch icing

  26. Hobie Hansen says:

Diaz ices the puck and takes a penalty, when is Murray available, or perhaps Beaulieu instead?

  27. shootdapuck says:

Where does the Diaz love come from? Management love the guy for what? it aint his stellar DZONE play for sure!

  28. habsfan0 says:

Watching coaches blast each other..that wouldn’t happen if players’ benches were on opposite sides of the ice like in the good old days.

The NHL must be the only major pro league in North America where teams’ benches are on the same side of the playing surface.

  29. Strummer says:

Mason Raymond with 2 more points tonight so far.
    Nice pick-up for $1 million.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  30. kempie says:

Over the past few years, I’ve heard a lot of people dump on the Habs’ player development. It occurred to me that it’s easy to throw out names like Latendress, Kristo, Avtsin or Fischer.

I’d say those guys are far outweighed by names like Eller, Subban, Pacioretty, Gallagher, Galchenyuk, Price, Plekanec, Desharnais, Tinordi, Bournival. This is a good crop.

  31. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

Watching Mario and Benny on RDS. They think people go to games to see the coach. Is that the silliest thing you ever heard?

  32. Strummer says:

Listening to Chris Nilan on TSN 690 makes me wonder-

Is there a commentator in Boston with a Francophone -Quebec accent analyzing Bruin games?

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  33. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:

    DD did diddly…as usual.

  34. Bill says:

For those who don’t like how Therrien always gives more ice time to Desharnais than Eller, let it be noted that Eller led Habs forwards with 6:41 in icetime. Desharnais played 4:21. The only non fourth-line forward to play less was Briere with 4:15. So looks like that’s the third line tonight.

Desharnais and Briere got most of the PP time though.

  35. Danno says:

I’ll be happy if we win. But I’ll be happier if we win by at least two goals since the Flyers were robbed of one.

  36. JayK-47 says:

Looks like MT has taken some of our coaching advice to heart, digging his heels in on the Markov-Diaz pairing though.

  37. jols101 says:

So many people have their comments prepared for when DD does something like ” ya, he is terrible”, you almost had a chance to post them but he missed the net. maybe soon.

  38. Fransaskois says:

Our center depth would be so much more of an asset if any of them could take faceoffs.

  39. DipsyDoodler says:

Good old NHL refereeing. So reliably inconsistent.

  40. NLhabsfan says:

White was lucky he never go caught with that trip.

  41. icemachine says:

CBC stream locking up for anyone else?

  42. florida habs says:

would be nice if we could hit the net

  43. Strummer says:

    Is LeCavalier’s nickname Lou?
Everytime he touches the puck that’s what the crowd chants.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  44. adadi says:

I would replace DD with Prust for good when Patches gets back.

  45. Nina76 says:

  46. Harditya says:

We got really lucky there. Phew! ahahah

  47. Mullie01 says:

Will we ever figure out how to win faceoffs?

  48. Bill says:

What a nice play by Eller. Prust couldn’t cash it in.

  49. slyCH says:

Price got away with one. Ouch. That was a goal.

  50. danhabsfan says:

Wow… We got a lucky break

  51. morivera says:

  54. florida habs says:

I guess we will be seeing Subban on the PK now

  55. topher5468 says:

Briere has no margin of error with me. I’ll never get over him opting to go to Philly when he left Buffalo. Was so mad he got the torch first on Tuesday. Childish? maybe.

  56. Nina76 says:

With all the penalties we are taking we are going to be scored on Philly is no walk in the park, smarten up guys, Therrien speak to your team let’s go !!!!

  57. jols101 says:

Eller and Galchenyuk were 4 on 4 Boone…

  58. adadi says:

    Pleks looks terrible this year.

    • danhabsfan says:

He really should be the shut down centre, but they aren’t using him there, cause we still need to develop a 1 and 2 Centre

    • Clay says:

This year??? Jesus man, it hasn’t even been a game and a half.

☞ “The deepest sin of the human mind is to believe things without evidence” ~ Aldous Huxley ☜

  59. shootdapuck says:

calls? because none of the 3 most useless refs arent involved Kozari Lee Jackson

  60. slyCH says:

He looked like he was hit by a bullet. Good call ref.

  61. doogie says:

Switch out DD, Gionta and Briere for ………Clarkson, Bolland and Raymond. Better team? Bigger, harder to play against, more grit….interesting, very solid, sneaky acquisitions by Leaf GM guy.

    • thehabs2002 says:

No way that trade gets made
No one is that dumb..oh wait a minute

Half breezer for one quarter of a life

      • doogie says:

Wasn’t suggesting it as a trade but merely as an observation/ commentary on Habs current size issue vs. Leafs acquisitions, silly! Like DD, Gio and Briere, are you a short guy, it went over your head too!

  62. thehabs2002 says:

Oh,…there’s briere, stupid penalty. He’s not very bright

Anybody know how long Parros will sit?

  64. AH says:

Somebody needs to smack Hartnell, he’s all over Gally!

  65. morivera says:

At least we are getting the calls tonight, unlike against T.O

  66. Da Hema says:

    God I detest Hartnell….

  67. jmsheehy19 says:

Game’s blacked out on centerice. Any good feeds?

  68. shootdapuck says:

    where is Briere

  69. Nina76 says:

Well we are getting pushed around for starters Eller, White, & Gally no BIG BODY to punch their lights out hope we stay out of the penalty box LET’S WIN THIS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!

  70. adadi says:

I hate that Price makes me cringe every time the puck is near him.

  71. florida habs says:

    PK on the PK?

  72. shootdapuck says:
