Liveblog: Eastern Semifinal Game 5 – Bruins win 4-2, take series lead

Bruins celebrate

Canadiens on the brink

For  the first time in this series, a team racked up consecutive wins.

Boston moved within one W of advancing to the Eastern Conference final with an easy 4-2 win.

The game featured four power-play goals, two by each team.

Boston outshot the Canadiens 31-30 and dominated play in all three zones.

Carl Sodergerg, Reily Smith, Jarome Iginla and Loui Eriksson scored for Boston.

Brendan Gallagher and P.K. Subban scored on Canadiens power plays.

Too little to late

After Loui Eriksson buried a rebound to give Boston a 4-1 lead, P.K. Subban scored his fourth goal of the playoffs.

It was the game's fourth power-play goal.

The Canadiens pulled Carey Price with almost five minutes left, to no avail.

Penalties hurt

to give the home team a 3-0 lead.

Boston's power play – which hadn't scored against the Canadiens in the playoffs since 2009 – got two in 32 seconds.

Reilly Smith and Jarome Iginla scored to give Boston a 3-0 lead.

Brendan Gallagher gave the Canadiens life, tipping Tomas Plekanec's shot past Tuukka Rask – the first goal surrendered by Boston's goalie in almost 130 minutes.

Boston had a 13-11 shot advantage.

It's the first time in these playoffs the Canadiens have trailed after 40 minutes.

Mistakes hurt

It began with an unnecessary icing by Tomas Plekanec.

Then he lost the D-zone draw.

The Douglas Murray chased the puck behind Carey Price.

The upshot was Carl Soderberg's first playoff goal.

And the Canadiens will begin the second period with Pleks in the penalty box.

Zebras are calling everything. There were fewer than four minutes of even-strength hockey in the period.

Ecah team was 0-for-3 on power plays.

Canadiens outshot Boston 9-8.

Best-of-three begins

Boston and the Canadiens played a cautious Game 4 in Montreal Thursday night, producing a scoreless 60 minutes and greasy Overtime goal that won it for the visitors.

We could see a more wide-open Game 5.

Playing in front of their rabid home fans, the Bruins  who have outhit the Canadiens in three games – are likely to be more physical than they were in that Bell Centre thriller.

It will be interesting to gauge the effect of the thumping on Max Pacioretty.

The Canadiens' leading regular-season scorer is having a tough time getting untracked  in the series and sustained a big hit from Jarome Iginla in Game 4.

Pacioretty is not the only scoring forward mired in a slump. Linemates David Desharnais and Brendan Gallagher are struggling.  Thomas Vanek, who played with Tomas Plekanec and rookie Michäel Bournival,  had no shots on goal in Game 4.

As noted by Patrick V. Hickey in his Gazette column, Boston's top line of Milan Lucic, Iginla and David Krejci has been minimally productive in the series.

Fearless prediction for Game 5: Matt Fraser won't score the winning goal.

  46. hansolo says:

I don’t know if I want Patches to deliver a lot of thumping hits. Look at Rick Nash, Ryan Kesler, and Mike Richards. I think hitting wears out the hitter over time (as well as the recipients) with a corresponding decline in scoring and doing other useful things on the ice.

Prust pretty much has to play that way as he isn’t a scoring threat (although he’s a pretty good hockey player).

But I don’t think Pacioretty should. What say the cognoscenti?

    • D Mex says:

In addition to his speed and scoring ability, MaxPac has been blessed with enough size to be able to assert himself, go wherever necessary and do whatever it takes to be effective. He has to realize this and do it IMO.

Habs lost the momentum and let the Bruins back in this series with the OT loss. Now they have to take it back..nay…RIP it back, from them tonight. It’s all or nothing IMO..A win, and they take it home and win the series at home. A loss and they won’t recover.. This is it..we’ll see who shows up in the biggest game of the year. I’m tired of being the sharpening stone for the Bruins sword.

  60. jols says:

Habs have gotten better every game. Last game was a tough pill to swallow cause we lost it on a lucky bounce. Our boys will have to continue to play better each game if we are going to win this series. I think Subban, Carey and Patches are all going to impose their will tonight. They have been our best players all year and will need to be at their best to get by these dirty Bruins…

    • johnnylarue® says:

Very curious to see if Patches can find another gear. Much easier said than done with that giant mammalian octopus in his grill every time he sets foot on the ice.

Really miss a guy like Bégin who had the uncanny ability to make Chara lose his sh!t seemingly at will…

  61. JF says:

Before Game four, I liked our chances in this series. Afterwards, not so much. Less because we lost the game than because of the stifling, clogging-the-neutral-zone style of hockey the Bruins played – exactly the type of game that is most likely to stymie the Habs. Any team that protects the front of their net and keeps us to the outside has a better than even chance of winning. If I were the Bruins, I wouldn’t open things up at all. I’m hoping they will because I think our speed gives us the edge in a more open kind of game, whereas their defensive prowess gives them the edge in a tight-checking defensive game.

  62. CHicoHab says:

Teams have both scored 11 and let in 11. Teams have both won once in OT. Teams are both 1-1 at home and on the road. No rhyme. No reason. No clue who’s going to win tonight. What’s going to make the difference?? I’m hoping it’s our 39 goal scorer.

  63. ooder says:

So I tweeted habs eye on the prize today why they write and obses more over the play of a 6th dman than the play of pacioretty and desharbais and you guys will never guess who started insulting me and blocked me lol. This riddle is for you hio vets

  64. Prop says:

I think Boston is going to try and play the same way as they did last game and try to limit quality shots against Rask. Hopefully the Habs will adjust to counter.

  65. Rad says:

I thought that hit by Iginla set the tone for Boston in Game 4. Big, big hit early in the 1st Period on our most prolific scorer made a powerful statement and put a dent in the Canadiens’ psyche. It took us 2 Periods to recover from it. That’s what playoff hockey is all about folks. Mark Messier was the best I’ve ever seen at sending that kind of a message.
