Liveblog: Eastern Semifinal Game 3: Canadiens win 4-2, take series lead

Ginette is undefeated in the playoffs

Ginette Reno sang O Canada for the third time in the playoffs.

The Canadiens have won every game.

The latest was a nailbiter.

First-period goals by Tomas Plekanec and P.K. Subban gave to Canadiens a lead, and Dale Weise made it 3-0 in the second period.

A remarkable redirection by Patrice Bergeron set up a tense third-period.

Andrej Meszaros made it a one-goal lead with 2:16 left. But with Tuukka Rask on the bench for an extra attacker, the Canadiens held the fort and got an empty-net goal by Lars Eller.

Boston outshot the Canadiens 28-26.

Never easy

A late goal by Andrej Meszaros made things interesting.

But the Canadiens withstood two-plus minutes of Boston pressure, and Lars Eller potted an empty-netter to seal the deal.

Third period should be special

Dale Weise took a great head-man pass from Daniel Brière and beat Rask to make it 3-0.

But with a shade over two minutes left, Patrice Bergeron redirected a Torey Krug point shot past Carey Price.

Shots in the period aere 12-12.

Hang on to your hats for the third.

Dangerous lead?

The Canadiens withstood an early Boston surge and got goals from Tomas Plekanec and P.K. Subban to take a 2-0 lead.

P.K.'s goal was spectacular. Fresh out of the penalty box, he took a Lars Eller feed and deked Tuukka Rask.

Canadiens outshot the Bruins 10-9 and outhit them 17-11.

 

Must-win?

It's not an elimination game.

But after being outplayed twice in Boston – while gaining a split – the Canadiens will have to be better on home ice in Game 3.

Carey Price has been superb in the series, as has P.K. Subban. The Canadiens' power-play has clicked on four of its nine advantages, and the penalty-kill is is 6-for-6.

But the Canadiens are strugling at even strength. And the top line of David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Thomas Vanek has underwhelmed. Boston's comebacks in Games 1 and 2 have included long stretches of chaos in the Canadiens' defensive zone. And Price's heroics have been accomplished despite a parade of Bruins crashing the net and effectively screening point shots.

Crease-clearing defenceman Douglas Murray is expected to draw in for Francis Bouillon.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

    Really like the way Subban, concentrated more on his defensive responsibilities after his goal and went into shut down mode, showed leadership tonight the complete package..

      Very classy comment by a classy guy. Not afraid to admit when you’re wrong, we need more of that on this site. You weren’t the only one (i include myself) who thought murray was a risk. But I’d be much more afraid to play Murray against a team like Pittsburgh who can skate circles around him all day. Bruins are on the slower but stronger side, exactly what he is needed for. Bon match :)

    Another Canadiens win and what angle do all of our sports stations focus on again, controversy. Like we can’t win without a break.

    The Subban play was nothing, he bumped the net trying to get a loose puck behind the net. There was no immediate scoring chance.

    I would say the Moen hit was where there should have been an interference penalty, but I loved it, of course.

    I’d have to see it again, but my initial feeling was that there shouldn’t have been the icing called which set-up Boston’s first goal. The defenseman pinched and hit the Hab forward making him unable to play the puck.

    Thanks Storman. Personally I see that justified I’d the pressure is on in the slot and the D knocks it off. But going to get a puck behind the net with no pressure on Subban from behind he in my opinion runs into it. If he doesn’t knock it he gets the puck and is on his way. Good non call IMO.

      In order for Boston to win this series now,Tuukka Rask will have to beat the Habs 3 times out of the next 4 games, a team against whom he now sports a 4-12-3 won/loss record.(1-9 at the TD Center).

    What. A. Game. By. The. Habs.

    Stats aside we dominated this game in every facet.

    Good offence, excellent defence, awesome checking, and what can I say about goaltending! Props to Therrien for inserting Moen and Murray to add weight and grit to this game.

    This was the best Habs-Bruins match-up I have seen in a very long time.

    On the other hand, the Boston team is completely classless. Zero class. They went for Carey Price on at least 5 different occasions including the Marchand punch after the whistle was blown. Really impressed with how Price brushed it off and didn’t let it affect his game, props to him!

    Also, Subbie is showing great signs of maturity. He’s not letting the Booins get to his head, while he’s a constant target. At one point three bruins went after him and he flew them off with one push. Hats off sir.

    Today is proud day to be a Habs fans!

    And for those who complain about Murray… look at how may hits he made and who he moved out of Carey’s view. Sure he got pinned in a few times but he got through it…this is his first hockey playoff game this year and it comes against a very good Bruins team.

    What MT should realize is that Montreal was most effective using speed and hitting Boston as much or more than they hit us. Seeing this and the lack of penalty calls and the crap face off wins, perhaps we could use the speedy, pesky, faceoffy, and yes somewhat wild, White.

    Moen played well, but I think we can up the intensity with Mr White.

      Loved both Gorges and esp Murray tonight, but Murray was scary when the Bruins kept recycling on our end! However, it was worth it for everything he brought.

    Yikes! Nail biter for sure. Boston is a tough team to beat, obviously. Great win. However, did the Bruins really get only ONE penalty in that game. One? REALLY? Now, I understand that there were only two penalties called and each team had one and we may have got away with a couple late but really? And I generally want the refs to let the teams play and it turned out alright but … really? I must have watched a different game.
    Anyway, great win. Go Habs!

    Thrilling, to say the least.
    No one can seriously argue PK is despicable but there’s plenty of evidence the Bruins are detestable, and after tonight, desperate. I’m looking forward to their being departed.

    Why are people knocking Gorges so much tonight? Not the greatest Gorges fan here, but as I listened to the game on TSN690, I can’t tell you how many times I heard Gorges making himself available for the puck from Subban as the Bruins obviously tried to outman Subban. He is not a ‘star’ defenseman but he played a very important and heads up role tonight.

    MT this playoff is a bloody wizard with the line formations. Jabba, on the other hand, is a piece of sh*t. 2 seconds left and he sends out his goons to try to injure a Hab.
    MB is looking much like a genius. He added Weise, Weaver and Vanek near the end of the season and added Murray in the off-season. Not shabby for a 2nd year GM.

      After his first unforced icing error I thought I’d count his total for the game. I ended up counting 2 total ( another icing ). He played a solid game. Made some great pinches and absorbed/delivered hits. His contributions should not be ignored just because he doesn’t skate pretty.

    There was some question as to whether there should have been a penalty shot on the Habs because of PK’s dislocating the net.

    I believe the rule says that if a player intentionally dislocates his own goal with under 2 minutes left,then a penalty shot shall be awarded to the offensive team.
    The key word being “intentionally.”
    It was clearly not a deliberate act by PK,incidental contact.

    I have been critical of MT but, except for putting DD on the ice with a one goal lead and 2min left, he coached fantastic tonight. His adjustment of switching Vanek and Gallagher was excellent. Gally took away some of the attention from Max. Vanek had two brilliant plays; one lead to a goal another a goal post. Briere and Murray’s time were well-managed. Plekanec was double-shifted so the 4th line was not a liability. He schooled the whiner tonight.
