Liveblog: Eastern Semifinal Game 3: Canadiens win 4-2, take series lead

Ginette is undefeated in the playoffs

Ginette Reno sang O Canada for the third time in the playoffs.

The Canadiens have won every game.

The latest was a nailbiter.

First-period goals by Tomas Plekanec and P.K. Subban gave to Canadiens a lead, and Dale Weise made it 3-0 in the second period.

A remarkable redirection by Patrice Bergeron set up a tense third-period.

Andrej Meszaros made it a one-goal lead with 2:16 left. But with Tuukka Rask on the bench for an extra attacker, the Canadiens held the fort and got an empty-net goal by Lars Eller.

Boston outshot the Canadiens 28-26.

Never easy

A late goal by Andrej Meszaros made things interesting.

But the Canadiens withstood two-plus minutes of Boston pressure, and Lars Eller potted an empty-netter to seal the deal.

Third period should be special

Dale Weise took a great head-man pass from Daniel Brière and beat Rask to make it 3-0.

But with a shade over two minutes left, Patrice Bergeron redirected a Torey Krug point shot past Carey Price.

Shots in the period aere 12-12.

Hang on to your hats for the third.

Dangerous lead?

The Canadiens withstood an early Boston surge and got goals from Tomas Plekanec and P.K. Subban to take a 2-0 lead.

P.K.'s goal was spectacular. Fresh out of the penalty box, he took a Lars Eller feed and deked Tuukka Rask.

Canadiens outshot the Bruins 10-9 and outhit them 17-11.

It's not an elimination game.

But after being outplayed twice in Boston – while gaining a split – the Canadiens will have to be better on home ice in Game 3.

Carey Price has been superb in the series, as has P.K. Subban. The Canadiens' power-play has clicked on four of its nine advantages, and the penalty-kill is is 6-for-6.

But the Canadiens are strugling at even strength. And the top line of David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Thomas Vanek has underwhelmed. Boston's comebacks in Games 1 and 2 have included long stretches of chaos in the Canadiens' defensive zone. And Price's heroics have been accomplished despite a parade of Bruins crashing the net and effectively screening point shots.

Crease-clearing defenceman Douglas Murray is expected to draw in for Francis Bouillon.

Puck drops 7:10ish.

    Not sure if Murray brought anything more than Frankie, would put Tiny in Thursday

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

      Ask Bergeron who Murray flattened in the first…

    • The B’s took way fewer liberties tonight than in games 1 and 2. He also laid out a couple of good hits and didn’t make any huge mistakes. Leave him in, I say.

      He is perfect antidote for Bruins. Notice how Thorton skated a away after game ending scrum bs when Murray came in with the look

  14. Danno says:

    Man, that hit by Moen on Iginla was a bone rattler.

    “Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
    Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs

  15. Andy and the habs says:

    Those saying Murray was so so did not watch the last 2 games. Or they fail to recognize the liberty the Bruins took on the Habs face washing them and all that crap.

  16. Fransaskois says:

    Love the physicality Murray brought but hated his total lack of puck moving ability. Looking forward to Tinordi.

    Bournival has been a huge player for us in this series so far.

    Weise and Moen look great out there, some great defensive and physical plays (not to mention the breakaway).

    Emelin-Markov were struggling again.

    Dream Weaver would look awesome as a #7D next year. What a pick up by Bergevin.

    The top lines are kind of “meh” for me. Both could be making a bigger impact on the game than they have.

    I think Bourque “Space Jam-ed” Pacioretty’s mojo. Patch has been an embarrassment so far, both sides of the puck.

    My boy Price has been all-world, awesome to see.

  17. WindsorHab-10 says:

    Is it okay for a guy to say:

    I love PK? I don’t care, I love PK.

  19. Et le but says:

    2nd game winner for Weise these playoffs…happy for him!

  20. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On says:

    It’s OUR time!

  21. Colombiahabs says:

    Georges is playing bad but Weaver is making him expendable. He is a shot blocking machine.

    • UKRAINIANhab says:

      Very true .

    • Max says:

      Too bad Weaver isn’t 26 instead of 36.

    • Storman says:

      Gorges 25.07 toi +1 playing bad,,, wtf

    • Chris says:

      I’m a little surprised by this…I’ve been very happy with Gorges’ play. He and Subban complement one another very well.

    • HabinBurlington says:

      Gorges and Emelin both struggled at times tonight, Gorges in particular had a few passes up the boards picked off where I thought he had a bit more time to make better play. But they all played hard and picked each other up. A great team effort by the Boys tonight!

      • habstrinifan says:

        THANK you Habinburlington. Great sensible post. The team is playing hard and we are seeing a few players becoming GREAT HABS in the making.

      • Chris says:

        Again, I saw things differently. I felt like Emelin had a very solid game tonight. He was engaged, he was under the skin of some Bruins (particularly Lucic and Iginla) and he was breaking up the play quite frequently.

        He did make some mistakes, but he always will. Overall, solid game.

        • punkster says:

          You’re right Chris and right about Gorges play tonight too. Next to PK, Gorges was the best D. At the other end of the spectrum the pairing of Weaver and Murray is a possession sinkhole.

          The choice of partners between Murray and Cube is Weaver’s worst nightmare come true. I get the impression he carries the bottom pairing every shift.

          Release the Subbang!!!

    • olematelot says:

      “Gorges is playing bad” WTF game were you watching.

    • chesterfiled says:

      Georges has to be captain before Subban gets it.

  22. Habcouver says:

    I guess Weise’s dad must be a bit excited tonight.

  23. Storman says:

    Weise’s dad in his glory along with his son..

  24. Storman says:

    Iginla left moaning to Ref’s after Moen mows him down..

  25. CalgaryHab says:

    Iggy whining about a late hit is such bs. coming from a team that late hits and cheap shots any other team 10 to 1.

  26. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Surprised: what about Bournival! Also Pleks and Vanek look GREAT

  27. It’s been reeeeaaaal quite about Mr. Raask. Not a factor so far. That’s been a factor too n’est-ce pas?

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  28. Colombiahabs says:

    Moen!!! So sick of listening to people here trash this guy who obviously know jack about hockey. Hes on to put the baby to bed, first he dives to clear the zone gets back up and next thing you know drives Iginla into a world of pain. That stopped all Boston momentum right there. You will not push us around anymore!!

    PS, your act is getting old! The boys aren’t acknowledging it anymore. The classic advice from our mommies of how to deal with a bully…. just turn around and skate away. Boston is a step slow and a few pucks short of a full load!!

    • chesterfiled says:

      With a concussion injury, it is obvious that you turn it up when it matters. The subconscious tells you that another hit will make you permanently damaged, the vibe of winning makes makes you think ‘f it, am on on a team that is going all the way!’…

  29. Da Hema says:

    I am not someone who typically makes predictions, but I am a certain of this: Julien will eat a box of donuts tonight and whine to the media about the officiating.

  30. Habbu says:

    Loved the way the Habs went to them all night long. In the first two it was the Bruins coming at us.

  31. Andy and the habs says:

    This is what uh…lizardking12 responded when I thought Murray should be in the line-up.

    Give me a break man, if you think adding 1 player to the lineup makes the difference between running scared and super confident you are delusional. The Habs will certainly not be running scared with or without Murray. Nothing I have seen from them this season gives any indication that they are afraid of the Bruins.

    I find it rather hilarious that people always seem to think that the Bruins physicality is what gives them an edge over us. Have you not been watching the Habs vs Bruins matchups over the last decade? The Habs have won most of them by using their speed and skill to get the Bruins off their game. I can recall maybe one game where their physical play actually directly effected a win. Other than that the Bruins physicality has never really been an asset for them vs the Habs, when they do beat us it’s because they stick to playing hockey.

    • twilighthours says:

      There have been a lot of posts about the effect Murray had. He was fine, for sure, with the exception of a few scary shifts where he ran around. But not nearly enough time has been spent on the D who deserve our love:

      Weaver, heart and soul
      Subban, otherworldly

      • Chris says:

        Heart and soul is the perfect description of Weaver. He and Gorges would jump in front of bullets if it helped the team win. They might not be as big as people would like, but both guys can play for my team any day of the week.

    • dr. schmutzdeker says:

      Hate to be too judgemental but LK sounds like he liked what Gainey and Gauthier were trying to accomplish with this team…something which will take Bergeron much time and patience to correct.

    • That’s exactly what the pundits said this morning. 5 on 5 play, we are behind them in goals. When they lose it mentally, we get penalties and take them off of their game. We although, seem to have trouble keeping a wide lead.

      I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  32. WindsorHab-10 says:

    Give it up to Douglas Murray. He set the tone early on.
    Good job one & all.

  33. durocher says:

    Too bad for NBC and Eddie O that the B’s didn’t make a comeback

  34. Habsbill24 says:

    If you think CBC is bad, The NBC broadcast was a love fest for the Bruins with Eddie Olycyk obviously having a man crush on the team. Disgusting really. You would think only one teamis on the ice.

  35. Better job in the third period. Yeah duh Thomas!

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

  36. Sal from the Hammer says:

    Huge win!!! They survived the dreaded two goal lead!! Great character builder! Go Habs!!!!!

  37. JUST ME says:

    Loving every minute of it !
    P.K! P.K! P.K.!
    Weise and Weaver. Gifts that keep on giving !

  38. habsfan0 says:

    Kudos to the Habs on the victory,but that’s three straight games they’ve allowed the Bruins to come to them in the 3rd period.
    It cost them in Game 2, and almost cost them in Games 1 and tonight.
    They can’t allow this trend to continue.

    On the other hand,if it wasn’t for a fluke bounce on the Bergeron goal in Game 2,the Habs could very easily be up 3-0 in the series.

    • twilighthours says:

      Disagree. This was a good third period fort he Habs against a great boston team. I’ve got no problems with that third period at all.

    • Storman says:

      I think they played a pretty well with the lead tonight ,,2nd period was great until an awesome Bergeron deflection,, and the 3rd was ok considering the team coming at them well done,.

  39. Storman says:

    Moen’s hit on Iginla a classic,, ya baby..

  40. UKRAINIANhab says:

  41. Da Hema says:

    I am going to cheerfully eat some crow about Moen. I thought the right thing to do was play Prust, but as soon as I saw he couldn’t play Moen was the right choice. At times I have described Moen as “almost useless,” but he has played well this playoffs. What a great hit he put on on Iginla at the end — that had to hurt!

  42. danhabsfan says:

    Man, we should be up 3-0, except for a lucky ice bounce… Wow

  43. HabinBurlington says:

    Great win, big momentum changer!

  44. WindsorHab-10 says:

    I only have one thing to say:

    Is he the man or what?

  45. UKRAINIANhab says:

    HOW ABOUT plekanec in the dot!!!!!!

  46. durocher says:

    B’s showing their true colors at the end of the game — total classless team.

    Big bad Thornton cheap shots Murray

  47. idle says:

    What great pick ups Weise and Weiver have been…

  48. sCOTT1243 says:

    Stranglehold Thursday boys…see yu then.

  49. Marc10 says:

    Now we’re cooking with gas. CHaracter.

  50. slapshot777 says:

    How can the League who says it is trying to get rid of fighting and clean up the League yet allow Boston to continually get away with he very thing they are trying to do away with.

  51. Stanley Cup or Bust ! says:

    They are beatable.
    The beef was good tonight.

  52. slapshot777 says:

    Murray stays in for the rest of this series. Moen too. Loved that hit on Iginlia. Moen smoked him.

    • Chris says:

      As somebody who is often hard on him, Moen had a wonderful game tonight. He was skating, he was hitting, and he was engaged.

    • dr. schmutzdeker says:

      Can think of a dozen other Bruins I would have preferred to be the subject of that hit than Iginla

      • DipsyDoodler says:

        Nah Iggy’s a good one. Glory hunter.

        Moving. Forward.

      • Chris says:

        After he put that interference hit on Gionta just a couple of minutes earlier, I was okay with it. Turnabout is fair play.

        • twilighthours says:

          And there was that shift in the second where he ran at everyone on the ice two or three times.

        • dr. schmutzdeker says:

          Agree…(I didn’t realize that it was Iginla who hit Gionta)

        • trolly says:

          Agreed, and before that he took a hit in the corner and turned around and crosschecked the guy in the back as he skated away. Goof.

          • Chris says:

            That was Emelin. To be fair, Emelin gave him a pretty good shot that probably would have been a penalty in the regular season.

            But I say go for it. If the refs are going to put away their whistles, there is no reason why only the Bruins should be taking advantage of it. Emelin was doing it very well tonight.

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

        Earlier in the season, me too, Doc.
        But I noted the numbers of nasty crosschecks Iginla delivered, often to the back, and I so love that he got creamed by Moen.

        And his subsequent reaction — to being bettered by an excellent, clean hit — finishes him off in my book. It proves you don’t go to the Bruins unless you buy into the whole philosophy. He’s welcome to it.

    • monmick says:

      It was a late-ish hit by Moen. But any time I see Jarome on his a$$, I’m happy…

      ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…
  53. Habcouver says:
    Thanks Doogie and Tooorey.You have it all figured out.
  54. Hoegaarden says:
    Potato head, once a Junior, always a Junior. What a sore loser.
  55. habcertain says:
    Les Canadiens sont la!
  56. HabsKid says:
    Yes!!! Two more like this please!!
  57. Danno says:
    They can start making the mold for that bronze statue of PK Subban they’ll be putting up in the future
    “Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
    Updates, highlights & great discussions on all things Habs
  58. trolly says:
    Subban first star. Hope that doesn’t blow up the Internet.
  59. Chris says:
    Sweet night for me!
    Montreal beats the Bruins, and Guelph scored 2 goals in the final 50 seconds of the game in North Bay to steal a 4-3 victory.
    Life is good.
  60. UKRAINIANhab says:
    We are in COMMAND!!!!! GHG
  61. CalgaryHab says:
    Thornton is a POS
  62. Peter Young says:
    NBC announcing crew goes into mourning over Bruins loss. The lack of neutrality they displayed throughout the entire game was sickening. But the Canadiens get the last laugh.
  63. slapshot777 says:
    This is where the League should be looking at this. Julien complaining to the refs about penalties. He is the and the Bruins are the biggest abusers of it. Make no wonder he doesn’t want any penalties called. They are constantly cheap shotting and the refs are letting them.
  64. Dulljerk says:
    Doug Murray 5 hits and a +1 and there at the end to keep the goons at bay. Good choice to play him.
    No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.
  65. Da Hema says:
    Smart move by Therrien by sending Murray out on the ice with three seconds left in the game. That kept those morons from Boston doing their usual crap.
  66. Haberoooo13 says:
    Can’t these clowns in Bruins unis or on their bench ever show any class?
    Lafleur coming out rather gingerly…
  67. Captain Pike says:
  68. HabinBurlington says:
    woohoo!!!!!! Big win!
  69. jols says:
    Murray would have pumped Thorton at the end of the game.
  70. UKRAINIANhab says:
    Plekanec my 1st star
  71. ths says:
    Did Eller Pump the Crest, Jump the Glass and do a Bolt, and strip down to his chest?
    Ooh Aah Habs on the war path
  72. Now I’m gonna get greedy! Should be 3-0 in games! Fock!
    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…
  73. Storman says:
    Vanek’s shot off the post,, what a blast,, 9 out of 10 times he scores there,, thanks for letting us shiate our pants Thomas,,
  74. duffy says:
    Healy ,should have been a penalty shot, what an idiot ,
