Liveblog: Eastern Semi-final Game 2 – Canadiens blow third-period lead, series tied

Bruins celebrate

We have a series

The Canadiens came within eight minutes of  a 2-0 series lead.

Then they collapsed.

Boston scored three goals in less than six minutes, and Carey Price – brilliant to that point – looked shaky.

Credit the Bruins: a character team that never quits.

Back to the Bell Centre for Game 3.

Epic collapse

Leading 3-1 11 minutes into the third period, the Canadiens surrendered three goals in 5:32.

Dougie Hamilton began the rally, and Boston got goals from Patrice Bergeron and Reilly Smith.

Milan Lucic's empty-net goal completed the rally.

Push-back period

Canadiens outshot Boston 15-13 and got goals from Mike Weaver and, on a power play, Thomas Vanek to take the lead.

Signs of frustration from the home team, which took a bench minor toward the end of the period.

A Milan Lucic goal was disallowed – in off his hand – and Carey Price made spoectacular stops on Patrice Bergeron and Torrey Krug.

Unlikely scorer

Daniel Paille, alone in the slot, fired a shot that ricocheted off Francis Bouillon's leg to beat Carey Price.

The Canadiens killed off a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation but were inept on their two power plays.

Boston had a 13-6 shot advantage, an accurate reflection of play.

Afternoon delight?

Boston plays many afternoon games in the course of its regular season.

The Canadiens don't.

So the home team might have an advantage in adapting to a 12:30 p.m. start time.

The way Carey Price is playing, however, the Canadiens goaltender could stone the Bs at 4 a.m.

Price has started 10 times at the Sochi Olympics and in this spring's NHL playoffs.

He's 10-0, with a save percentage of .939 and a goals-against average of 1.60.

Clutch goalie?

Yeah, you could say that.

Price made 48 saves in the series opener. His teammates blocked another 30 shots, and Boston missed the net 17 times.

That's a lot of vulcanized rubber, and Game 2 may bring more of the same.

• Interesting stat cited by Patrick V. Hickey in The Gazette: The Canadiens have played 342 minutes, 25 seconds to date in the postseason. They've trailed for 3:34.

• Suggested reading: I'd urge anyone surprised by the stomach-turning racism of some Bruins fans to track down Common Ground, J. Anthony Lucas's epic study of the Boston busing crisis. Also remember the Red Sox were the last major league team to integrate. Pumpsie Green joined the team in 1959 – 12 years after Jackie Robinson made his Brooklyn Dodgers debut.

a friend of mine came up with a great idea regarding suspensions, once it is determined a suspension is warranted, the minimal number of games should be the sum of all previous suspensions, so following that logic, matt cooke should have gotten 18 games minimum. what do you think.

    100 Legends Way,

    May 1st, 2014
    7PM
A tall man wearing a black suit and hat wearing dark sunglasses works his way through the throng filing into TD Garden. Although there is no wind, the tall man’s black fedora seems move of its own accord and he clasps his hand over top, keeping it in place. He has his ticket scanned and enters the building. A muffled voice reaches his ears.
“Where de ‘ell am I, Ellwood? You tole me I was going ‘ome!” With that last, Ellwood’s hat is squirming more forcefully and won’t stay put on his head. He quickly heads to the toilet and finds an empty stall.
He keeps a firm hand on his fedora and talks with a quiet intensity. “Look, I’ll bring you home right after this game. It’s got to be done. The team needs us.” The muffled voice replies, “I knew you were lying. It was too good to be true, being rescued from dat place.” Ellwood nods. “I know, I know, but you’ve got to understand. I’m getting the band, um, the team back together. I have to make a few more…stops.”
The Garden erupts as Rene Rancourt completes his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. “Hear that?” Ellwood asks his hat. “It’s about to start and you and I both know they need help. I’m on a mission from the hockey gods. Waddya say, Jake?” A droplet of sweat beads on Ellwood’s upper lip as “Jake” considers. A long minute later, “Jake” breaks the silence with a question, “Dere’s 2 game ‘ere, right?…Okay, but we go ‘ome after da next game, okay?”
A minute or two later, Ellwood is in his seat and he removes his fedora from his head. Those sitting closest don’t notice what looks like a small puff of smoke streak towards Carey Price but they are too busy watching another classic confrontation between the Habs and the Bruins. Ellwood smiles.

  53. nova scotia vees says:

Hooray…no Moan! Yes I spelled it correctly. When he went out, we began winning. I have said for 2 years that he is a waste of a sweater. Last game, he had the “least” amount of puck possession of anyone. Just cruises around. Too bad Vanek has decided to emulate him. Go Habs.
And as a former Halakian, I am delighted to say that Price “stole” the last game. Now Carey, don’t crouch so low on some shots and you will shut them out.

These ignorant a-holes denigrate the entire Bruin fan base and don’t deserve to even comment on someone as supremely talented as PK Subban. What a disgrace and another black eye for Boston in the arena of race relations. I hope the hockey community and PK in particular realize that these imbeciles do not speak for the vast majority of Bruins fans. As difficult as it will be as a true Bruins fan, I will be rooting for PK to have another great game and stick it up these idiots’ asses!

  61. HotHabs says:

Hopefully Habs will have their legs, better than game 1 when they were 2nd on the puck all game, because they can and need to play faster and smarter (especially in their end). Hoping Price brings it again to snuff the B’s. And, would love PK to score at least 1 tonight to piss on all the Boston racists with his display of skill!

    BTW, Boone, it’s game 2, not 3

  62. Bigdawg says:

If this series goes long the three keys to success will be:

-Keep skating hard and avoid getting physically dominated/hurt/tired
-To go after Chara (looking at you Wiese – keep it up). Eventually Chara will tire and start to play slow/soppy. He is their “general” – slowing the old man down will impact the Bruins BIG TIME
-Don’t allow Rask to get into a groove

At this stage of their rosters the Bruins are a better team than the Habs over an 82 game season..But playoffs is different and upsets happen..The 2 penalties the Bruins received in o/t were deserved but they should have been penalized much more than once in regulation play based on their rampaging style of play and Merchands flagrant fouls….Concern is that they will play even more barbaric and yet the pp will be the same for both teams…

Best part is, despite the sound being cranked up, there will be enough outside noise that I won’t have to listen the CBC whack jobs….I can just imagine how PJ Stock will start the show by talking about how the Habs suck and how Boston is great.

Enjoy the game everyone, to all those in Europe and other time zones, enjoy the game at a normal hour for you folks. Hopefully this will be a good omen for our boys.

I am surprised Moen is out, I like the move, but have to wonder if perhaps Moen had a bit of a setback. I just can’t see MT making this move unless his hand was forced. Or I suppose Bournival forced his hand with his strong play. His extra speed on the forecheck will help a great deal.

    • B says:

Moen hadn’t played a game in well over a month and with very little time between games, the extra rest may be warranted. I also welcome the tireless and speedy Bournival back, he has played well in the post season.
