Liveblog: Conference Final Game 5 – Canadiens win wild one to stay alive

GalchCelebrates

A wild one at the Bell

Even at inflated playoff prices, the fans got their money's worth as the Canadiens won 7-4 to force a sixth game.

It wasn't easy.

A 4-1 lead with Henrik Lundqvist on the bench should have been safe.

It wasn't.

The Rangers scored three unanswered goals – on six second-period shots – to tie it.

Rene Bourque restored the Canadiens' lead with his second of the game and added a third as insurance.

Other scorers were Alex Galchenyuk, on an early power play; Tomas Plekanec, Max Pacioretty and, into an empty net 2ith more than four minutes left, David Desharnais.

Dustin Tokarski made 23 saves, including some big ones in the third period.

Killer instinct

Rene Bourque's third of the game and David Desharnais's empty-netter put this one out of reach.

Goaltenders battle?

Early goals by Max Pacioretty and Rene Bourque chased Henrik Lundqvist.

4-1 and back to NYC for Game 6, right?

Wrong.

The Rangers got three quick goals by Rick Nash, Derek Stepan (his second of the game) and Chris Kreider, on a power play, to throw a pall of gloom over the Bell Centre.

Rene Bourque's second goal of the game and beat Cam Talbot restored the lead.

But this is a nervous building.

The Rangers scored on three of their six shots in the period.

At last, a lead

The Canadiens started fast and struck early as Alex Galchenyuk tipped in a P.K. Subban rocket on a power play less than two minutes in.

The Rangers tied it on a 45-foot Derek Stepan wrister that dropped six inches on Dustin Tokarski's blocker side. This after the Toker made a spectacular save on Carl Hagelin.

Less than two minutes later, Tomas Plekanec beat Henrik Lundqvist glove side from distance.

Canadiens had a 12-10 shot dvantage.

They'll start the second period shorthanded.

(Insert desperation cliché)

Win or go home.

Do or die.

Tuesday dawned overcast and drizzly in Montreal, where your Canadiens face an ominous situation that matches the weather.

The team has faced elimination twice before in the 2014 playoffs. They won Games 6 and 7 to eliminate the mighty Bruins.

Can they win Game 5 to stay alive against the Rangers?

This team has displayed character and resilience all through the regular season and playoffs, up to and including two overtime thrillers at Madison Square Garden.

It's unlikely Bell Centre fans will have to endure the kind of Game 5 stomping that ended the Canadiens' playoff series against Ottawa last year.

And regardless of the final score, we should celebrate a 2013-'14 that exceeded the expectations of all but the most delusional Habs supporters.

This team has taken us on a helluva ride.

And it isn't over.

Puck drops at 8 p.m.

Check back later for live game blogging.

• What was Alexei Emelin doing on Game 4's winning goal? Not much of anything.

• It worked for the Kings. The brilliant Josie Gold suggests Ginette needs a Slash approach to change the Canadiens home-ice luck in this series.

So here’s a question. If the Habs win the series and Price is ready for the finals what do you do?

    1) Put Price in straight away?

    2) Leave Toker in?

    3) Start Toker ride him till he loses?

  2. Ton says:

shit I hope Bork don’t get suspended for that cross check………rds talking about it.

  3. Classic Lundqvist, coach asked him if he would play the third, and he said “I don’t want to play”

I can’t blame the habs for that lackluster 5 min PP – they were trying to milk the win, truth is an offensive normal PP strategy would have worked much better.

  18. Keep Briere on the bench in NY and we win again.

    Moore = 3-5 games
    Dorsett= 1 game

Watching Bourque play is like watching a zombie movie…you’re waiting for a stiff to wake up. The guy had a hat trick and he still pissed me off because he had a hold of Kreider near the end of the game and did nothing…LOL

    BTW Bealieu was excellent tonight.

  24. Arnou Ruelle says:

Anybody of you guys still think Vanek was a great decision that MB took on trade deadline?

IMO, Vanek should sit in for next game and let Bournival play then Prust should take his spot.

    • Ton says:

no chances of a goal coming off his stick are greater than bournaval………wont happen!

      • Arnou Ruelle says:

Honestly, Vanek is buying his time here. He knows he will test free agency.

Cherry was right, Minnesota is in Vanek’s mind right now. However, I doubt if the Wild will take a chance now that he’s showing the kind of player he is come playoffs.

    • kempie says:

I’ll reserve judgement until I hear about his injury. Because he’s really not this bad. There’s no possible way.

      I hear it’s his hand.

  25. habs001 says:

Game 6 is the big one…Rangers could afford to lose today…Some keys in game 6 will be the 2nd period with the benches having long changes..No doubt first goal will be huge….PP will probably be 3 chances at most per team..would be nice to score…Not taking anything away from the effort that the Habs D put in but lot of it is caused by their limitations..While the Habs need improvement on the forwards i still believe if they had more of the potential D they have in the system(good skaters, tall and physical etc) they would have won this series

  26. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On ® says:

All-in-all, that had to be the worst that I’ve ever seen a team play and still score 7 goals. But I’ll take it!

    X X X X X X X X X X 6 5 4 3 2 1

    • JohnBellyful says:

The five-minute power play was a real downer. This team doesn’t make it easy on itself.
And that goal that opened the floodgates. Up 4-1 and Gorges is standing in the crease covering … nobody? But Simpson puts the blame on Subban for the goal, for a ‘lazy’ check way over by the boards! Gimme a break.

      • Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On ® says:

The first, second, and 4th goals should never have happened. On the Nash goal, Tokarski poke-checked it to him right in the middle of the slot. That’s a puck that Price pounces an and freezes.

All-in-all though, a great game by the Toker. That stick-shaft save was incredible.

        X X X X X X X X X X 6 5 4 3 2 1

        • JohnBellyful says:

At the other end, Pacioretty’s and Bourque’s first were very much stoppable. Tokarski came up with more timely saves, that’s for sure.
And it was good to see Montreal score twice on Talbot, who has given the team trouble in the past.

  27. JohnBellyful says:

Game Seven: Montreal scores an empty net goal to take 3-1 lead with 22 seconds to play. Camera pans to Bergevin, who puts his feet up on the counter and stuffs a huge unlit cigar into his mouth, flashing a big smile.
    Make it so, guys.

  32. WindsorHab-10 says:

Are you guys happy with the game of Gionta, Vanek & Gorges? Can’t win Thursday with these guys. We need some new blood in the lineup.

At the end of the 2nd it felt more like a loss even though we were up 5-4 but the guys came through in the 3rd. More ice time for Eller, Bourque & weisse.

  33. habfaninottawa says:

In Therrien’s post-game, he stated that Emelin has a “body injury” from last game

  34. Frank2468 says:

Well there should be a 2 game suspension for Moore after all fair is fair. And for Dorsett what a cheap player head butting with a helmet there should be some kind of discipline for that as well.

Rene Borque was a force out there……….in todays nhl its hard to have one player play like that every game……..he’s a keeper and playoff performer……….he was our best player last year as well.

I got a surprise gift from my friend who works at a resto here in Key West. The cook is black from California and worked in Montreal for a few. When he heard my Ukranian friend was leaving work early to see the game and root with me for the Habs…he made a Poutine and decorated the cover with an intricate go Habs go design. Not only was the poutine excellent, something you can’t find in the states, but it obviously brought us luck. I’m gonna meet this California man and force him to watch the coming games. I told my friend to keep the art from the cover and plaster it on the fridge. We can’t lose.

They might be messed up, they show a 10 minute match penalty to
Moore for the hit on Weise…..

  47. Coach K says:

Bourque was playing like a guy who never figured that he’d ever get close to a Cup anyway…

    Rule 47 – Head-butting

47.3 Major Penalty – A major penalty shall be imposed on a player who head-butts an opponent (see 47.5).

47.5 Game Misconduct Penalty – When a major penalty is assessed under this rule, a game misconduct penalty must be imposed.

47.6 Fines and Suspensions – There are no specified fines or suspensions for head-butting, however, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).

  57. gumper says:

    A couple of questions:

    1. Can MT continue to lean on Markov and Subban as much as he has for the rest of this series? If not, who can gobble up some of those minutes? Dare we even consider the idea of giving some to Murray in the hope that he can encourage Kreider to leave Tokarski alone?

    2. Has this team got two more wins in it, or did they leave it all on the ice tonight?

    3. Should Moore get more, fewer or the same number of games as Prust?

    4. Should Dorsett be suspended for the headbutt?

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.

    I’m speechless! 20 years and counting…

    • gumper says:

The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
      Mark Twain

  64. Arnou Ruelle says:

PK Subban is now becoming an active leader in this group. If Gio does stay, he’s still captain. If he does leave, it will be the top 3-dmen to shoulder the leadership roles. Now choose, who could be your potential next captain for the Montreal Canadiens:

    #26 – Gosh Gorges,
    #76 – PK Subban,
    or #79 – Andrei Markov?

I think both PK and Marky will stay after this season. Bergevin will have a headache on how he’ll fix those contract extensions with their agents.

    • Texus says:

Personally I feel like Subban is captain material. The way he handles himself off the ice in interviews and such, combined with the fact he’s a rare player that can step up when it counts on the ice, he would be my choice.

    • Get Gorges outta there! I’m so sick of the Gorges boosters. He almost single handedly had us collapse tonight. He doesn’t have an outlet pass, no shot, no body. All he does is block shots. Keep Weaver and bring in the Hamilton D. Markov scares me like he scares everyone. PK is a stud.
