Liveblog: Conference Final Game 4 – St. Louis scores in OT, pushes Canadiens to the brink

PKRangers

Rangers take control

Credit the Canadiens with resilience.

They battled back from 1-0 and 2-2 deficits to force Overtime.

And they had the early pressure in OT.

But Henrikl Lundqvist stopped everything.

And after the Canadiens failed to clear their zone when they had three chances to do so, the great Martin St. Louis beat Dustin Tokarski to give the Rangers a stranglehold on the series.

Future Hall of Famer ends it

After the Canadiens flubbed three chances to clear their zone, Martin St. Louis fired a laser over Dustin Tokarski's shoulder to win an OT thriller.

P.K. and PP finally click

Two minutes into the period, all five Canadiens on a power play touched the puck before P.K. Subban blasted it past Henry Lundqvist.

An Alex Galchenyuk shot dinged off the crossbar behind Henrik Lundqvist.

Canadiens had an 8-6 shot advantage.

Heartbreaker

With less than a minute to go in the period, Derick Brassard got behind the Canadiens defence and Dan Giradi's long pass found him.

Brassard beat Dustin Tokarski to restore the Rangers' lead.

Francis Bouillon had tied the game at 1-1 eight minutes into the period.

Rangers had a 11-5 shot advantage.

Deadly power play

It's sure killing the Canadiens.

The Rangers took three consecutive penalties, during which the PP was pathetic and surrendered a shorthanded goal to Carl Hagelin.

The Canadiens were better 5-on-5 and outshot the Rangers 11-9.

P.K. Subban, caught up-ice on the Hagelin goal, played a ridiculous 12:14.

Pivotal

Buckle up for the key game of the Eastern Conference Final.

If the Rangers win at Madison Square Garden Sunday night, they take a 3-1 stranglehold on the series.

If the Canadiens win, they regain home-ice advantage in a best-of-three.

Can Dustin Tokarski reprise his Game 3 heroics?

Have the Canadiens solved Henrik Lundqvist?

What will be the impact of two suspensions – Brandon Prust and Daniel Carcillo – and Derek Stepan's broken jaw?

The Canadiens' Saturday practice had Michäel Bornival skating with Daniel Brière and Dale Weise. Francis Bouillon was paired with Mike Weaver and likely draws in for Nathan Beaulieu.

Derick Brassard returns to the Rangers' lineup.

Puck drops 8:10ish.

We never had the lead and needed a bit of luck. Hagelin came up huge for them tonight.

Credit the ageless St Louis. In the end it was a great pick up for NYR. What a gift to Sather.

I trust the crowd back home to take us right back to NY. Let’s bring in White. We need some push back from our fourth line.

The D needs tightening up. Emelin was slow tonight. Gotta be better if we’re going to fight back.

    Tant qu’il y a de la vie…

    Go Habs Go!

  2. CJ says:

Frig. Half an inch away from being tied 2-2. Chucky had the game winner on his stick with less than 3 minutes to go in the third. That’s the margin. Half an inch between being tied 2-2 or down 3-1. Of course it would have to be St. Louis. I’m getting sick of his act and the play his story gets.

  3. D Mex says:

I can understand DD being shoved off of the puck, but it’s a bit tough to swallow when the guy who outmuscles him is St-Louis. Anyhoo, it’s in the books, but it ain’t over ’til it’s over. So, onward to game 5 – at home !

  4. big_green_puffin says:

We will be shaking hands and cleaning out lockers Tuesday! Habs won’t win another one! Their done! They gave everything they had, and just came up short and now have to go back home where they will likely be boo’ed out of the bell centre! Just not there yet!

  5. Ton says:

    we missed Prust tonight.

  6. mount royal says:

Max: comment about someone who just lost their mother. But you probably didn’t even notice what you said.

  7. UKRAINIANhab says:

I would sit Vanek to be honest

  8. durocher says:

A team that goes 1-8 on the PP, with one in OT, does not deserve to win

  9. johnnylarue says:

It’s true what everyone is saying though: our gob-smackingly frustrating tendency to play SOOOO SOFF on our zone exists MUST DIE.

That stuff sends my impotent rage meter through tha roof.

  10. JF says:

It would be Saint-Louis…. He’s probably the main Habs-killer left in the East. How old is he? When can we look forward to his retirement?

But we’re getting almost no production from our forwards. Plekanec, Gionta, Vanek – none of these guys have any goals. That plus special teams is what is killing us.

    • johnnylarue says:

That early OT power play was the hockey gods/refs saying, “We like you guys–here, take this,” and, well, yeah…

One of our marquee weapons has turned into our Achilles heel, which goes a long way towards explaining why we’re now dead in the water.

  11. Jimmy Page says:

Not sure if “entitled” works. The guy had to battle hard for his career.

  12. Ozmodiar says:

Yeah, tough too see that little cry baby score the winner.

  13. habfan100 says:

Blah, that was a weak ass play come on…you’re in OT and you let St. Louis walk in like that…AGAIN?! Eventually he will score. It ain’t over yet, but it’s a hell of a climb and I don’t like our odds.

The realist in me says Rangers in 6.

    • 25insight says:

Sadly, as a hockey fan first and foremost, rangers in 6 looks incredibly likely. But I really do not want a repeat of 2010. We better bring it at the Bell Center and then crush them at MSG after a good win to get the momentum back.

  14. UKRAINIANhab says:

You have to win the next 2 games…..
    Game 7 is anyones

  15. Ozmodiar says:

    Eller on the PP, SVP!!

  16. Bozo McBozo says:

Am I too harsh in saying our forwards suck?

  17. piper says:

Need to hire a good PP coach for next year.

  18. The Jackal says:

Post-mortem time? Habs in 7, ye of little faith.

    • danhabsfan says:

Not the way they are playing.. This team has lost it’s will somehow. Need some changes for next year. Time for a new captain, a nd new big string mean. D men. Vanek is gone, use Pleks as trade bait.

  19. PK says:

OK … Series is close to an end but not done yet.

Could win on Tuesday, you know?
    Not unheard of …

MSL is going to get all the love from HNIC, now …
    Good for them ..

    See you Tuesday, Rags

    >>>>> Les Canadiens sont là

  20. Congrats to Team Canada says:

If only Montreal would of started the series on the road.

  21. bandaide says:

Felt it would end up like this unfortunately a few players did not come to play one that sticks out is Max and Emelin should sit next game he is slow and wont hit so im thinking hurt I want Murray I dont care if he is slow nobody pasted anybody wtf sorry your mom died seriously but hammer him like they hammer our goalies fk fk fk Oh and beauieu back please with Murray(sp?) Gorges out Tinordi as well in I want TRUCULENCE. ….le sigh

  22. Odie24 says:

I’ve never seen a team, more incapable of clearing their own zone. Been a problem all year. It really is pathetic.

  23. Peajay says:

Rangers have solid veteran leadership, with players who have both experience and ability. We have some players with experience, but not quite the same ability leve.

  24. DLS HAB says:

Mr. Boone said Rangers in 5 on HI/O. Does he know something we don’t?

  25. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

I’ve never seen the Habs make so many blatant mistakes. You simply can’t win like this. Two breakaways on special teams that lead to goals…just terrible. The Habs have no one to blame but themsleves. They gave away a game they should have won easily with all the PPs and Tokarski.

    Pas d’excuses…

  26. NightRyder says:

Whining his way out of Tampa is working out for St. Louis just like whining his way onto the Olympic team did.

  27. Jdub1985 says:

Habs can’t buy a 10th playoff victory – smells like 2010 – if only they could play the Bruins every round – they look so gased and lucky to have 1 win

  28. habsfaninkw says:

    Disgusting. Poor Tokarski.

  29. habcertain says:

PP is killing us, in the playoffs you need to be able to cash, terrible in the face circle also, loses games.

  30. CJ says:

That stinks. Well, 1/8 on the PP, plus a short handed goal against tells you all you need to know.

The game was there for the taking.

Tokarski was excellent, almost everyone else, especially our “best players” were not.

2-2. It should have, could have, would have been amazing to go home 2-2. I was certain we’d do it. We are playing like stink yet we pushed the game to OT and had a chance to win it. It’s like we can’t get out of our own way.

In closing, it’s simply too much to ask if our leaders can’t get the job done. If we lose this series, we are going to look back on this with disappointment. Fudge….

  31. Adidess says:

Game was there for the taking. Such a big swing between 2-2 and 3-1. The team won’t lose at the Bell Centre on Tuesday, but winning the series now will be a tough tough task.

  32. Peajay says:

Vanek is a streaky player. He was hot v. Boston, not so much v. Rangers.

    • smiler2729 says:

      Hot vs. Boston??

      LOL

  33. dallyd says:

    And the PP….wow. Horrible

  34. big_green_puffin says:

And there’s no way you put that on Tokarski! That’s EMELIN and markov blowing the game, blowing coverage, and leaving a 50 goal scorer with enough time to call home and tell his family to turn on the pvr before he shot the puck! Glaring problems for MB to deal with in the off season! Get is a freakin defence! Also need to remove the coach responsible for the PP and the defence!

  35. Ton says:

game 2 was a killer as well……..we could have been tied 2-2………but its one game at a time …….that’s all you can do……….they need to next one and the presure is back on the rangers!

  36. krulmadden says:

Emelin, why did you leave your zone? St. Louis had a clear shot 6 feet in. Can’t blame Toker on this one, gals & guys. He did his job. Ah well. Next season.

  37. Peajay says:

The reality is someone has to win and someone has to lose. And, let’s face it, the Rangers are just that much better a team.

    • smiler2729 says:

      But they aren’t.

    • D Mex says:

I would agree that they have fared better in the war of attrition, especially between the pipes. But better team ? Not so much …

  38. EricInStL says:

The pitfall of a small goalie. Played his heart out but it’s hard to overcome a physical limitation.

Good year for the team, but still lots of work to do to make this a year in year out cup contender.

Still need more size and speed. But then again all teams are looking for that.

    Good year guys.

  39. Jimmy Page says:

    Too many blown PP.

Habs took wayyy too long to wake up in the game.

    STILL can’t clear the puck.

  40. dallyd says:

Like I said earlier, the giveaways by the Habs are astounding 3 chances to clear to zone. Terrible

  41. smiler2729 says:

Clearing the zone has been a problem for the Habs since the playoffs began!

Still think the Habs can win 3 in a row and then go and get chewed up by Chicago or most likely LA in the Finals.

  42. SherbrookeW says:

How can anyone criticize this effort? In a tough building, with their best player injured, they play their hearts out and damn near win. DD was terrific all game, so was PK,scoring a goal only he could score. This is a character team. Stuff like that happens in overtime.
    Habs Since ’68

    • danhabsfan says:

Because it wasn’t a full game effort. Habs played the 3rd on, and did not capatalize on all the PP’s.

    • Peter Young says:

Agreed. The Canadiens played well in the second and better than well in the third. As I said below, I’m proud of them. And I have not given up hope yet. Winning three straight has happened in this year’s playoffs, twice if my memory is correct, by the Kings (four straight against the Sharks) and the Ranges themselves (three straight against Pittsburgh).

  43. habstrinifan says:

Not a good feeling AT ALL!

  44. Danno says:

And just like that it slips throughs our hands…

He who is responsible for the PP, should be fired. Woeful.

  46. Habcouver says:

Despite having a power play in OT, too

  47. WindsorHab-10 says:

Might as well throw Douglas Murray & Tinordi in for game 5. If we can’t beat them we might as well hurt them. Ryan White has to play next game. We need these 3 bruisers. Writing was on the wall for this one with all the missed PP chances. Useless boobs.

  48. Habbu says:

Joy undone in a heartbeat. Hate this empty feeling….

  49. Harditya says:

The Habs were beginning to dictate the play from the 3rd. Everyone played solid.. well Vanek’s an exception.

  50. Peajay says:

Can I echo a comment from a few weeks ago? Back in February, how many of us would have been more than pleased to make the conference finals?

  51. big_green_puffin says:

I called it! Markov was going to cost us! Please MB do not resign this guy! Get the youth that won’t tire out with a cup final on the line!

  52. UKRAINIANhab says:

2/3 at home. Got to play a full game.

  53. rhino514 says:

Nothing against the kid, but Pricey wouldv´ve had either the first or the last goal.
Kreider should be the mvp of the series.

  54. jols says:

    Heart breaker..

  55. habcertain says:

Can’t blame Toker but he would like that one back

  56. danhabsfan says:

No, teams like Habs don’t get here to often anymore. Ths would have been our chance, but not strong enough against LA or Chicago.

  57. Peter Young says:

A grand effort from the lads. I’m proud of them.

  58. Captain aHab says:

Buy Vanek a ticket for Minny and say farewell before game 5. Add a guy who’ll make an effort at least.

  59. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Emelin..

  60. CH Marshall says:

    Sigh. Maybe next year folks.

  61. Peter Young says:

CH now need to win three in a row, but two are at home. Difficult, but not impossible. We’ve already won one in New York, so it can be done again. CH never gives up.

  62. johnnylarue says:

Anybody have a razor blade they can lend me?

  63. WindsorHab-10 says:

Safe to say we’re running on fumes. Of all people that little puke had to score. No use for him.

  66. hablifting says:

Ah well .. Enjoy the finals NY .. you’re gonna get destroyed no matter who you face.

  67. Coach K says:

Tough break…the D got caught deep and couldn’t get any help getting the puck past centre ice. What are you gonna do?

Can’t give the great St. Louis that many quality looks and expect to get away with it.

—When Hell freezes over, I’ll play hockey there too—

  68. danhabsfan says:

Not Tokers fault… I at Marty

  69. MICP says:

we had the pp, we had the chances but couldnt do it.

They had one chance and its over!! What star players do.

  70. Prop says:

This was the make or break game. I don’t think the Habs can win 3 games in a row.

Why did Emelin follow Markov there, leaving Martin St Louis wide open?

  72. Mad Habber says:

Hopefully for game 5 they show up for the whole game instead of last period and overtime…

  73. Captain aHab says:

Markov simply cannot play that many minutes anymore. If he comes back he has to be a 5-6 d-man.
