Liveblog: Conference Final Game 3 – Toker smokin’, Galchenyuk OT hero and Canadiens are back in the series

Tokarski steals one

Rookie Goaltender Dustin Tokarski faced a 14 shot barrage in the first period while the Canadiens managed only four on Henrik Lundqvist.

He was beaten only Carl Hagelin.

The Canadiens slowly fought their way back into the game. Andrei Markov tied it at 1-1 early in the second period, and Daniel Briere gave the Canadiens a lead with a tick over three minutes left.

But Chris Kreider – the R.J. Umberger of this series – ticked one in off Alexei Emelin's skate with Lundqvist on the bench and 28 seconds left.

The Overtime hero?

Alex Galchenyuk, who had been invisible to that point.

Galchenyuk wins it

Tomas Plekanec threw the puck toward the net.

Alex Galchenyuk – invisible to that point – tipped it past Henrik Lundqvist.

And the Canadiens win a wild one.

Can't catch a break

With a tick over three minutes left, daniel Brière scored to give the Canadiens a rare lead.

But with Henrik Lundqvist on the bench and 28 seconds left, a shot by Chris F. Kreider ticked in off Alexei Emelin's skate.

rangers have a 36-22 shot advantage over three periods.

Tied in spite of themselves

Andrei Markov converted a pass by Max Pacioretty.

It was the Canadiens' sixth shot of the game.

Dustin Tokarski has made 26 saves through two period.

The Rangers will begin the third on a power play.

The Rangers had a 14-4 shot advantage.

The Canadiens went 12 minutes without a shot on Henrik Lundqvist.

Dustin Tokarski handled the bombardment well until Josh Gorges took him out of the play on a Rangers' 2-on-1, opening the door for Carl Hagelin's goal.

P.K. Subban was caught at the Rangers' blueline on the play.

Max Pacioretty has three of the Canadiens' shots, Daniel Brière the other.

Hope springs eternal

Your Montreal Canadiens were better in Game 2 than in Game 1.

Granted, it would have been difficult to be worse. But Game 2 possession stats favoured the Canadiens, and they'll need more of the same as the series shifts to Madison Square Garden.

Michel Therrien juggled three of his forward lines at the team's Thursday practice.

Thomas Vanek, who played less than 12 minutes in Game 2 and did not record a shot on Henrik Lundqvist, dropped down to the fourth line, with Brandon Prust and Daniel Brière.

Alex Galchenyuk moved to left wing with Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta. Lars Eller will centre Rene Bourque and Dale Weise, while the top line – David Desharnais between Max Pacioretty and Brendan Gallagher – remained intact.

The Canadiens will need traffic in front of Lundqvist, who stops everything he can see. Special teams have to improve. And Dustin Tokarski will have to get in touch with his inner Ken Dryden/Patrick Roy.

• Pre-game reading: A really excellent analysis of the goal that turned Game 2 around.

Jaro Halak signs with the Islanders

  1. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Thank god I was wrong about benching Prust. He came out and did exactly what I was waiting for. Finally someone clobbered one of the Rangers who are “phony” tough. Can’t believe the Habs did not get a two man advantage when Carcillo man-handled a linesman…brutal.

  2. Say Ash says:

Tokarski & Bobrovski was a great 70s cop show.

  3. Mr. Biter says:

As I posted earlier today, we need more than 1 goal to win and Toker is a very good goalie. Budda may be playing for another team next year.
Poor horses pulling the band wagon, it just got a lot heavier with people jumping back on.

    Mr. Biter
    No Guts No Glory

    • PK says:

Budaj is a good sport but he likely does not have a future in Montreal …

      >>>>> Les Canadiens sont là

      • Mr. Biter says:

Writing was on the ice when they gave Toker a 3 year contract and yes Budaj has been a great back-up but when they showed Toker before the game in the Habs dressing room Budaj did not look to Happy.

        Mr. Biter
        No Guts No Glory

  4. PK says:

Tokarski did what he had to do!
Hope the team in front of him starts playing with confidence.
They should stop worrying that Price is not in net.
Rags are there for the taking.

Prust, Gallagher, Markov were really good.
    Emelin feels better, now.
    AG 27 comes through.

    >>>>> Les Canadiens sont là

  5. Mr_MacDougall says:

Habs NEED to get another right handed defenceman for next season.. Emelin has to make far too many plays on his backhand…

~~ Plekanec at the Disco ~~

  6. 19yan65 says:

I hope that this game was the worst and now the habs can start playing better hockey. We won despite being outplayed.Lets go habs

  7. Max says:

The thing is,the Rangers have been playing at near 100%, while the habs seem to be playing to around 60% of their capacity and the series is only 2-1.If the habs find that extra gear and get back into form,we could have a very good series going forward with a chance to advance.

  8. The Prustean Age says:

Finally! Took me FOREVER to sign in again.

My throat is hoarse. Anyone Montrealers heading out for some post-game grub? I off to Boustan, on St. Cat’s (near where that’ mstreet intersects with St. Laurent). Maybe I’ll see you around! (Be there in about 30 mins or so.)

Be wearin’ an old-timey sweater and sporting a humungo BEARD.

    Screw the “hockey gods”!

  9. cmurray11 says:

Boone have a little faith man

  10. Marc10 says:

Wait until the crowd gets on Henrik’s case in 48hrs…

  11. Trego Hab says:

Hey Boone. I had doubt that St Louis was gonna score.

  12. Chuck Kept Calm and Carey'd On ® says:

I didn’t get to see any of this game due to a prior engagement. Does this mean that I can’t watch the next one, either?

    X X X X X X X X X 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

  13. CJ says:

Let’s allow the Rangers to stew on this for an extra night….

    Let them think about Tokarski.

Lastly, we still haven’t played our best game. That has to be encouraging. Could this win light a fire under some of our maligned players? Anytime you get a win during a game in which Price is not playing, and PK is below average, than it’s a bonus. Lots of heavy lifting tonight be a number of players. Let’s build on this and press it further. A loss on Sunday and the Rangers will feel the squeeze….

Don’t give up folks. These are very evenly matched teams.

    Go Habs Go!

    • UKRAINIANhab says:

I was thinking that as well. (maybe I have settled down enough to have a real conversation). PK and others will play much much better, any time you can sneak out a win without PK playing his best is awesome.

  14. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Game. On.

  15. JohnBellyful says:

Well, it’s great to be woohooing, but let’s be honest, we just as easily could have been boohooing, with all the freakin’ giveaways the team made.
No wonder the Habs got outshot badly and penned in their own end so often.
Good thing Tokarski was clutch. (TV show from the ’70s, I believe.)

  16. GGtheHab says:

All of you MT haters (TIMO) and second guessers can kiss MT’s french a$$….can we now please let him coach in peace?

  17. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Front called it. Toker outplayed Lundquist tonight. If it wasn’t for the terrible D in front of him he would have got a shut-out. Brutal mistakes. Anyway, PK was right. Lundquist has been lucky. He was shaky tonight. Rebounds all over the place. Finally a rebound landed on the stick of a guy who can bury it.

  18. MontrealAtheist says:

It seems Timo’s doomsday prophecy was a little premature, eh? Have some faith in our boys, bro, will ya? GO HABS GO !!!

  19. Prop says:

    Never in doubt.

  20. CJ says:

Let’s see how the Rangers deal with some adversity. Next game, pressure shifts back onto New York. They won’t want to return to Montreal tied at 2.

Feeling very good about Tokarski. Great game! Now, let him get into the Rangers heads.

Lastly, as noted earlier, I’m very happy for two of our own (and perhaps more) – Jim and Chris who were at the game tonight.

    Go Habs Go!

    Cheers, CJ

    • MontrealAtheist says:

      > Next game, pressure shifts back onto New York.
      > They won’t want to return to Montreal tied at 2.

Well, it’s not like the Boys want to return to Montreal behind 1-3 and with the prospect of 3 elimination games in a row?

Pressure is still on us … but that’s not a bad thing! If we can overcome a 2-3 deficit against Boston surely coming back from a 1-2 against Rangers should be doable. GO HABS GO!

  21. danhabsfan says:

Good night, we will have a good sleep, see you Sunday.

  22. CH Marshall says:

  23. PK says:

    Good work by Tokarski!!

Habs D needs to tighten up although they did block some shots.
    Good shot/pass by Pleks.

We are back in the series.

    >>>>> Les Canadiens sont là

  24. Ghosts of the Forum says:

Nothing will make the Gomez – McDonaugh scar go away. But Desjardins for Toker helps…

  25. Max says:

You get in Lundqvist’s paint and you’ll score. The Rangers do a good job of boxing out opposing forwards from getting near him but when you do you’ll get goals. He’s not as great as we are led to believe.

  26. The Teacher says:

Ruck the fangers timo. Ruck the fomucking fangers!

  27. habs-fan-84 says:

So wait…the next game isn’t until Sunday night at 8? That’s ridiculous. Hard to believe Habs have only played one Saturday night game these entire playoffs.
    GO HABS GO!!

  28. Le Jadester says:

    Habs, OLE !

  29. Habs4LifeInTO says:

That could take a ton of pressure off the boys. It’s a start. Whole new series now…Go Habs Go!!

    24 cups and counting….

  30. habsinnyc says:

Now they are saying the Rangers were not on their game tonight. Someone said it earlier — we hit them a lot more tonight. Frustrated them. And some crazy hot goaltending as well.

  31. habsinnyc says:

NBC panel is talking about which team “deserved” to win. Seems to me Montreal deserved to win for one reason and one reason only — they scored more goals than the Rangers!

    • PK says:

      Good work by Tokarski!!

Habs D needs to tighten up although they did block some shots.
      Good shot/pass by Pleks.

We are back in the series.

      >>>>> Les Canadiens sont là

    • Norm0770 says:

Montreal deserved to win game 2, so the teams are even now… Oh wait the Habs didn’t take out their goalie in game one, so they aren’t even yet.

  32. piter says:

    Steaks are on Emelin tonight….

  33. Stanley Cup or Bust ! says:

  34. twilighthours says:

Jim and Chris enjoyed a good one tonight.

  35. boing007 says:

That could be the kick in the pants that will boost the Habs for the next games. I’m picking up good vibrations… Ooo bop bop

    Richard R

  36. big_green_puffin says:

We got lucky, in a game we didn’t deserve! But I’ll take it! And hope MT puts the right people in the lineup next game! This team is gassed!

  37. UKRAINIANhab says:

Goodnight everyone! Ghg!! WE HAVE A SERIES! Toker is the mahnnn! Ole!

  38. PK says:

Habs are back in this …. We can stop worrying about Price, now.
    We have another goalie …

The pressure is now off and the Rags will be feeling it!!

    >>>>> Les Canadiens sont là

  39. Simpsy33 says:

We have a pulse folks. Go Habs

  40. Coach K says:

Well ’bout that!!?? A game 3 win in their barn.

By the way…The stats say that whoever wins game 3 in a 7 game series usually comes out on top. Let’s go and prove ‘em right boys!

—When Hell freezes over, I’ll play hockey there too—
