Liveblog: Conference Final Game 3 – Toker smokin’, Galchenyuk OT hero and Canadiens are back in the series

Tokarski steals one

Rookie Goaltender Dustin Tokarski faced a 14 shot barrage in the first period while the Canadiens managed only four on Henrik Lundqvist.

He was beaten only Carl Hagelin.

The Canadiens slowly fought their way back into the game. Andrei Markov tied it at 1-1 early in the second period, and Daniel Briere gave the Canadiens a lead with a tick over three minutes left.

But Chris Kreider – the R.J. Umberger of this series – ticked one in off Alexei Emelin's skate with Lundqvist on the bench and 28 seconds left.

The Overtime hero?

Alex Galchenyuk, who had been invisible to that point.

Galchenyuk wins it

Tomas Plekanec threw the puck toward the net.

Alex Galchenyuk – invisible to that point – tipped it past Henrik Lundqvist.

And the Canadiens win a wild one.

Can't catch a break

With a tick over three minutes left, daniel Brière scored to give the Canadiens a rare lead.

But with Henrik Lundqvist on the bench and 28 seconds left, a shot by Chris F. Kreider ticked in off Alexei Emelin's skate.

rangers have a 36-22 shot advantage over three periods.

Tied in spite of themselves

Andrei Markov converted a pass by Max Pacioretty.

It was the Canadiens' sixth shot of the game.

Dustin Tokarski has made 26 saves through two period.

The Rangers will begin the third on a power play.

The Rangers had a 14-4 shot advantage.

The Canadiens went 12 minutes without a shot on Henrik Lundqvist.

Dustin Tokarski handled the bombardment well until Josh Gorges took him out of the play on a Rangers' 2-on-1, opening the door for Carl Hagelin's goal.

P.K. Subban was caught at the Rangers' blueline on the play.

Max Pacioretty has three of the Canadiens' shots, Daniel Brière the other.

Hope springs eternal

Your Montreal Canadiens were better in Game 2 than in Game 1.

Granted, it would have been difficult to be worse. But Game 2 possession stats favoured the Canadiens, and they'll need more of the same as the series shifts to Madison Square Garden.

Michel Therrien juggled three of his forward lines at the team's Thursday practice.

Thomas Vanek, who played less than 12 minutes in Game 2 and did not record a shot on Henrik Lundqvist, dropped down to the fourth line, with Brandon Prust and Daniel Brière.

Alex Galchenyuk moved to left wing with Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta. Lars Eller will centre Rene Bourque and Dale Weise, while the top line – David Desharnais between Max Pacioretty and Brendan Gallagher – remained intact.

The Canadiens will need traffic in front of Lundqvist, who stops everything he can see. Special teams have to improve. And Dustin Tokarski will have to get in touch with his inner Ken Dryden/Patrick Roy.

This is the problem with this coach. He does not see what everyone else considers obvious. I’m sick of it. Sitting Bourney for Prust has been a colossal mistake in this series. Bourney has been one of the best Habs all during these playoffs. Once again the coach compromises his fourth line.

Well it was only a matter of time before this coach went back to his idiot ways. Anyway, still hoping for the best, but it’s hard to fight not only your opponents but your coach as well.

    My line-up would have been:

    Gally-Eller-Chucky: kid line
Gio-Pleks-Bourque: “about to be shipped out of Mtl” line
    Bournival-Briere-Weise: energy line

Regardless of scoring, the Habs have to play super tight. DT is a good goalie but can not cover errors like Price can. Keep it tight and hope for a break or a PP goal. If they play into the Rangers counter-attack style, they are in trouble if Lundquist keeps playing the same way.

Good point. He was sacrificing an already broken body.. Nowhere near the type of impact he can make healthy.

~~ Plekanec at the Disco ~~

      • Louisville says:

He was okay. So he’s been kept in for about 10 minutes of good play in one game this playoff….He cannot take a pass…he cannot make a pass…he cannot hit anyone…he cannot fight anyone…WHAT’S THE POINT!

    • Mr_MacDougall says:

No, he’s only useful at 100%

The best he can do is “not hurt us”

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but next season I could see the EGG line being our number 1 and DD – Patch as the 2nd..

Eller has had an impressive playoff so far, I look to him to step up tonight and create some offence.

~~ Plekanec at the Disco ~~

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Prust has been dead weight against the Rangers. They know him and won’t engage with him. Better off with Bournival’s speed.

I think the case of Vanek just further reinforces the need to draft not only skilled character guys, but guys who will do anything for the CH.

  48. Hobie says:

Ah, here we go again, Michel Therrien is being out coached, the team is winning despite his horrible coaching, lol, wow.

I wouldn’t be surprised to scroll through the comments and read that Price is too injury prone, was lucky to beat Boston and TB and that any goalie would have won in net for team Canada.

Subban is hogging the puck, Gorges sucks…

    • mushalain says:

People can think what they want, but the Habs are all Subban & Price. Without both of them in the lineup at the same time we are nothing special, and everyone knows it, including the players who are on the Canadiens, and that’s where the real problems lie.

      • JUST ME says:

Yeah..i guess Max , D.D. Markov, Plek, Gallagher, Galchenyuk, Weise,Weaver ,Gio, had nothing to do with the Habs successes this season.

      Hey Johnny

Just thought of a great movie idea.

Aliens come to earth to eat everyone. But first they enslave all the chefs and tell them if they cook their fellow humans they get to live.

So the Japanese chefs make tempura, the Italian chefs make human bolognese and osso buco, the French make bourguignon from real Burgundians, etc …

The irish chef could make boiled human with potatoes and the Scotsman would make haggis.

      Moving. Forward.

  50. Rad says:

Lighten up boys. Habs with a good chance of winning tonight’s game IMO. Led by Subban and Pacioretty, as well as Eller and Weise, who are due for a big game, Habs can pull this one out with a little help from Lady Luck, something they’ve had very little of so far in this series. Tokarski doesn’t have to be great, he just has to be average like he was last game. I expect a spirited effort tonight.

  51. theflukester says:

That is an excellent analysis! Therrien out-coached. Surprised? Now lets see Therrien out-fox NY. Go HABS Go!

  52. 123456 says:

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it or if you all are too busy crapping on the guy leading the team in goals in the post season. Seriously 22% of you on the poll would sit vanek….. thank you for not running the team.

Back to my point – for those that care how the game of hockey is played read the link above about the analysis on Nash’s goal. While I don’t agree with how it came about the fact is the Rags have been using the Habs aggressive forecheck to their advantage – spread out the forwards causing the Habs D to back out – that leaves more space between the circles and the blue line for the initial breakout pass.

Tonight you will see the Habs make a few minor adjustments and I think the result will be a very close game. Habs come out flying I hope and pot an early one!!

  53. I hate to say it, but the NHL has given us no choice. We must employ…the Chicago Way.

Just heard someone pronounce the H in wheel so I’m gonna need a minute

  55. FlyAngler says:

In his short time with the Habs, Vanek has scored some nice goals on tip ins while standing in front of the net. Seems to me he did that at least once in the last series against Boston. One of those tonight could be the difference and you might actually need a tip in or a deflection to beat Luckqvist tonight. I suspect that M T knows this, I mean, he said that he is a gambler right- so you don’t trade a Jack for- a six especially when you have one or two more Jacks to go with it……….

“Gardez la Foi! Keep the Faith!”

    • The Prustean Age says:

Good point, Fly: it would be spectacularly stupid to either sit Vanek or reduce his ice-time so much that he would not be involved in those scoring scenarios. Clearly, Vanek’s the one who has to motivate Vanek, but he’s one helluva good tip-shot scorer. No goalie can stop those forever.

-And as far as the Boston series goes, I’m fairly positive he scored two tipped goals (both PPs) in one game vs. Boston (sadly, the same game that had the third period meltdown).

      Screw the “hockey gods”!

      • FlyAngler says:

You are right about the motivation piece Prustean, Vanek does have to motivate Vanek, but M T needs to try to push the right buttons since everybody is different. I am not sure that 4th line duty is the answer and count me among those who regard Pleks as too erratic- so I would play him with DD and Patches.

“Gardez la Foi! Keep the Faith!”

        • The Prustean Age says:

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. I think we need to see that trio again – that’s where we saw the magic and (at least for one game) should see it again. I always wonder if a player gets a bit down when (for whatever reason – poor performance or line matchups) he’s switched to another line.

Yes! Give us Vanek-DD-Patches – please, MT!

Friedman was speculating based on the question. He said he doesn’t believe Vanek will be scratched by Therrien. He then speculated that if it were to happen, those things you mentioned would have been possible reasons why. Friedman actually said he’s supported every decision MT has made so far, including Tokarski, because they make sense. Scratching Vanek while down 2-0 in the series would not be logical, so he doesn’t believe Therrien will do it.

    • alain58 says:

The question is: how to wake up a snipper that is MIA for many games when you really need a constant effort from everyone especially somebody who wants to be a game breaker? Now, Vanek reminds me of Michael Ryder. A guy that can score a couple of amazing goals in one game then goes to sleep for the next 3 (average of 40 gals over a season) while being a defensive liability all those four games.

      • johnnylarue says:

I do find it interesting that Michael Ryder gets tagged with the “floater” label while Vanek seems to have dodged that unfortunate reputation for most of his career, since I agree that they are largely very similar in that regard.

I guess Vanek gets bonus points (measured in millions of dollars) for being a good passer in addition to being a streaky scorer and full-time floatmeister.

  66. habcertain says:

Freidman just came up with a possible explanation as to why Therrien would bench Vanek.

Vanek is not coming back next year so he has no allegiance to the player, and maybe a benching would motivate the other players.

If there was an iota of truth to that scenario I would fire Therrien on the spot, but would explain a lot about what goes on in this guy’s head.
