Liveblog: Conference Final Game 1 – Canadiens annihilated 7-2 by Rangers in series opener

St. Louis

Total domination

The Rangers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by diminutive dynamos Martion St. Louis and Mats Zuccarello during a first period in which they had a 12-6 shot advantage.

After Rene Bourque's goal cut the lead to one, Chris Kreider and Brad Richards beat Carey Price in the last 61 seconds of the second period.

Peter Budaj replaced Price for the third period and surrendered three power-play goals.

Lars Eller got one during Garbage Time.

The Rangers outshot the Canadiens 28-22 and dominated from start to finish.

Pouring it on

Within the first five minutes, the Rangers got power-play goals from Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan and Rick Nash to snuff any remotre hope of a CH miracle.

Peter Budaj had replaced Carey Price for the final 20 minutes.

Lars Eller scored a lovely unassisted goal long after it mattered.

Comeback snuffed

Rene Bourque brought the building to life when he beat Henrik Lundqvist to make it a one-goal game.

The euphoria didn't last.

After withstanding some pressure, the Rangers got two goals – from Chris Kreider and Brad Richards – in the period's last 61 seconds.

Canadiens outshot the visitors 10-8.

Game 2 is Monday night.

These ain't the Bruins

The Rangers used their speed and forechecking tenacity to dominate the home team for 20 minutes.

Shots were 12-6 and the visitors got goals, into wide-open nets, by Martin St. Louis and Mats Zuccarello.

Rene Bourque took two hooking penalties.

The Canadiens were awful.

Buckle up for a fast ride

Your Montreal Canadiens face a Conference final opponent that eschews rock 'em/sock 'em intimidation in favour of skating and skill.

Not unlike your Montreal Canadiens.

The Rangers have excellent team speed, epitomized by ageless Martin St. Louis.

New York has a red-hot goaltender in Henrik Lundqvist, who was as brilliant against Pittsburgh as Carey Price was against Boston ... and David Krejci is no Sidney Crosby.

The Rangers have a solid, six-deep defence corps, led by – pause for gnashing of teeth – Ryan McDonagh.

And Alain Vigneault is a good coach.

The teams are very evenly matched, and fans can look forward to fast-paced, entertaining and thuggery-free hockey.

It's an early afternoon start to accommodate NBC. Puck drops 1:10ish.

• Every remaining game in the series will begin at 8 p.m. There will be two-day gaps between Games 2-3 and 3-4. Game 7, if it goes that far, will be on Sunday, May 31.

What this team has done for Montreal

The Canadiens have made a bet with Jimmy Fallon

• Pre-game reading: The great Teemu Selanne talks about his career, including unfond memories of Pierre Gauthier. Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick tweeted: Congrats to Teemu on a HOF career, it was an honor to play against him.

Do you suppose Quick threatened to kill Selanne in the handshake line?

  33. CJ says:

I’m not entirely sure what to expect this afternoon. I’m of one opinion that the boys are likely going to be a bit flat, a letdown from an emotional series, but the Rangers are essentially in the same situation.

On the other hand, a win today could send the King, and by extension, the Rangers reeling. A win today and we could be looking at a 5/6 game series. A loss and I’d lean towards a deciding game seven. Regardless, I think Montreal will prevail. Of course St. Louis, Richards, Nash, the King, etc., worry me, but I’m sure the same is being said in New York about our team.

Price, PK and company can do this! I’m behind them, as I know each of you are! Go Habs Go! Let’s go….. Go Habs Go!

    Cheers, CJ

FINALLY — NBC coverage starts. No pre-game show in the U.S. But no coverage of the light show. I predicted the Rocket for the torch kid. But JB makes sense too.

  47. donmarco says:

  49. duffy says:

Will Cherry be wearing his Rangers suit today, or will he still have his Boston duds on, I’m sure all he will talk about is how his Bruins should have won that series ?

  50. UKRAINIANhab says:

Hope all is well with Mr. Stubbs

  51. JF says:

Excellent piece by Jack Todd on how the Canadiens have arrived. His description of the rebuilding process is spot on: Gainey and Gauthier acquired the bricks, Bergevin supplied the mortar to glue them together into a contender.

  52. SPATS says:

Great Peise on Weise just aired on HNIC. What a dandy we have! Loves when fans approach him, takes the hi road re ML and believes hes getting better every game and believes he can be an impact player at this level.

Big thank you to Torts from this Habs fan!

Lock him up MB, he wants to be here and we want to keep him here

    • Strummer says:

I thought CBC hated the Habs?

How do you even measure the impact that Weise has had on the team with his absolute joy to be here playing in Montréal like a dream come true? What affect had it had on the team and other players around the league? Great MB acquisition!

  54. HabsPooch says:

Habs will have to really keep their eye on Chris Kreider. Big physical winger a la Lucic but will be focused on scoring goals…

  55. FormalWare says:

I predict a striking similarity of this series to Lightning-Habs. Every reason to judge the teams close on paper; in the end, not a really close series, at all.

I haven’t been this nervous for a hokey game since …. the last time there was a Habs game. My poor heart can’t take all this.

    GO HABS GO!!

  63. habsinnyc says:

MB’s game day presser today was fantastic. Such a different attitude than the old PG regime. It’s almost as much fun to be a Habs fan now as it was when I moved to Toronto in the early ’70s.

  64. Dulljerk says:

I’m a little worried about a tough and emotional Bruins series hang-over. I hope the Habs can get back into the groove quickly in this game.

No eternal reward will forgive us for wasting the dawn.

    Book of Hab
    Chapter 14
    p.12

    And once again The Faithful
Gathered to hear the Clarion Call
Of Great Renown Within The Temple
    of the Ste-Flanelle.
A New Foe had arisen in their midst,
And the Blessed Ones, still wounded,
Reached deep into their Hearts for Courage.
And, behold, The Faithful roared with One Voice:
For The Lions’ Spirits were with them
And doubts and despair were cast away.

So sayeth the Book of Hab

  72. JohnInTruro says:

You ready for this one Boone?

  73. lizard ranger says:

    pumped ! Go Habs

  74. B says:

This should be a good series. It won’t be easy and it’s not supposed to be. Some folks seem to be mistakenly dismissive of the Rangers. I don’t take them lightly and expect that the Habs and their coaches know better than to take anything for granted. After the emotional high of knocking off the Bruins, I think it may be a bit of an early challenge to get the compete level back up to where it needs to be. Hopefully they can get their heads and legs into it early.

    –Go Habs Go!–

  75. donmarco says:

As my Dad had. Kindred spirits. Go Habs Go. PS She’ll never forget you.

  78. donmarco says:

Bit of a trot, but it’s on my list.

  79. CanadiensPride says:

I didnt think otherwise (read the text carefully!!!!!) Rangers play is creating openings to beat him and players then feel he’s beatable. Nothing to do with Price’s play

  80. D Mex says:

He’s a Hab right now, tho, right ?

  81. CJ says:

Against the Bolts he was excellent. He regressed significantly during the Bruins series. It’s only one period today, but looks to have fully returned to his regular season self.

Lots of time left to right the wrongs of the first 20 minutes.

  82. Mondou6 says:

    How about now?

  83. CanadiensPride says:

Not according to stats. Plus it’s rare for a team to consistently play better on the road. Playing at home has advantages

  84. Ian Cobb says:

Ever since he took those stupid penalties against Boston, Pleks has taken the rest of the games at 70%.

  85. smiler2729 says:

    Plekanec sucks

Let Prust run around and set the tone for the rest of the series. Need to get some emotion back for game 2.

  89. Max says:

    What’s tasteless?

  90. D Mex says:

I think hsi point is that NBC is milking it / continues to milk it, for all it’s worth, and it’s time for them to move on to something else.

  91. Chris says:

I was pulling for the Penguins…that would have been a far better match-up for the Canadiens. The Rangers’ speed had me very fearful.

It isn’t over, but now Therrien and his staff have some coaching to do because there are some glaring issues. The right side defencemen were getting turnstiled all game long, the Canadiens couldn’t get any transition game going for long periods of time, and the Habs have zero time with the puck because of how fast the Rangers close in. Throw in the Rangers’ shot-blocking excellence and this was a team that is designed to give the Habs fits.

  92. Ron says:

Didn’t bench him, sat in the pen box. If your going to make up stories kid get it right. He also got a 10 min misconduct.

  93. smiler2729 says:

I’ve been saying that here for years but for some reason everybody thinks he’s a Habs god…

Yeah, $5,000,000/year to lose key faceoffs and always miss the net with the puck.

The first goal today that St. Louis scored was totally on him… BUT HE’S A HABS GOD HERE so now watch as I get totally chirped by his turtlenecked fans…

  101. johnnylarue says:

  102. CJ says:

Sadly, I agree regarding Gionta and Vanek. There isn’t much there (Gionta) and there simply isn’t much effort (Vanek). I want to see more, but I’m not holding my breath. It’s too bad though, when you’re this close, you figure guys would do anything to take the next step.

You can never take these chances for granted. There is no guarantee we will be in this position next year. So, when you get this close, you need to fight and claw to stay alive.

In closing, I’m in the minority as I’d pass on signing Gionta for another three years…..

  108. CJ says:

Hi Sly. If we won Budaj would have his name on the Cup, same as other back ups have in the past. He did not need to play to qualify.
