Liveblog: Boston dumps hapless Canadiens 4-0

CharaCelebrate

Frank Vatrano’s goal, five minutes into the third period, completed the rout.

Tuukka Rask, who had NEVER beaten the Canadiens in Boston, made 25 saves for the shutout.

Carey Price faced 36 shots.

The Bruins had not beaten the Canadiens at the TD Garden since Jan. 12, 2012.

Adam McQuaid got the home team on the board nine minutes into the game.

Unaccountably wide-open, McQuaid’s blast was pretty much unstoppable by Carey Price.

With the Canadiens on a power play, Zdeno Chara danced through the white jerseys and beat Carey Price from close in to make it 2-0 five minutes into the second period.

Ten minutes later, David Krejci had an open side to Price’s right and buried it on a Bruins power play.

The Canadiens couldn’t score with a 5-on-3 power play in the first period.

My avatar represents the way the Habs have been playing lately.
Perhaps, a red toilet seat, but that might be garish.

For the 3rd game in a row, DD is not to blame for this loss.

  6. ProHabs says:

2 things you can be sure of when the Habs come back from their 5 day break.

    – Therrien will still be behind the bench
    – DD will be back in the line-up

Nice to see Shaw throw a beat down on Krug. It is the first time I have seen a Hab beat up a Bruin since Benoit Pouiot punched out David Krejci.

  7. Ozmodiar says:

I take comfort in knowing that, despite the loss, there were no individualisss plays from the team tonight.

  8. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

    There are two options IMO:
    1. Fire MT. Even Lefebvre can do better than this.
    2. Finally fire JJD and Lacroix.

You just can’t keep blaming the players anymore after 4.5 seasons.

  12. RightNyder says:

In other news, soon-to-be Canadien Alex Burrows had a fine game tonight…

  13. Cal says:

And on that last snowy night in Boston that Galchenyuk and Beaulieu played for the Habs, the team was shut out yet again. And Teflon Therrien gets through another blockbuster trade that brings Joe Sakic out of retirement with Iginla. The Habs give up 2 1st rounders, one in 2018 and the other in 2019.
Okay, I’m kidding. But who the hell knows with these guys?
I believe Price is trying to get Therrien fired or get the hell out of Dodge. Ought to be an interesting bye week.

  14. habsfan0 says:

Geoff Molson should take a cue from Donald Trump when it comes to MB & MT: “You’re fired!”

  15. ThebadBoards says:

Sad sad showing of a once proud team in the annuls of the NHL history. Reduced to ancient memory of an age when fans could brag about this team . For this is all there is now. Just a MEMORY That stirs the soul . What the fans come wishing and hoping to again find .But what they get now just disgusts and churns the stomach or makes one hoot in derision when you say the Canadiens of Montreal . Are you listening Mr. Molsen. Not lol

  18. sirhabalot says:

At this point MB will just reinforce his coaching staff by adding DD as assistant assistant coach.

  19. boing007 says:

Campbell on TSN690 has received hundreds of text messages since the second period. The language is so salty that he can’t read them on the air.

This is going to be a long week. Afternoon matinee on Hockey day in Canada Saturday before a visit to MSG next Tuesday.

What will the Habs look like in 2 plus weeks by the March 1rst trade deadline.

    Uncertainty at its best.

  21. Timo says:

Judging by the comments, “dump” is the very appropriate word to describe boston beating the Habs. Dump like the garbage team they are. Unfortunately, this will NOT result in Therrien’s firing. They simply didn’t have the puck luck.

    • Habituated says:

Perhaps more like the kind swirling down the bowl?

Lots to dump on tonight, and of late. Will MB do any dumping of his own? A move that will leave him down in the dumps? Or will that be the locale of fans eager for change?

  22. RightNyder says:

Anyone who’s on Twitter, do a search for ‘Therrien’ – folks here aren’t the only ones with their pitchforks out.

  23. Duffy says:

All those Av brass must have been scouting Boston players,, they sure wouldn’t want any Habs.

  24. jimmy shaker says:

Mayday, Mayday…..This team is going down, I repeat going down!

No heart, no pride…..MT has to go, unless MB can trade 12 players or so.

    Shaker out!

    Reporter: Coach…tough loss…your thoughts?
MT: Well we got a bad bounce on the opening faceoff and then PK and Eller were invisible tonight

Coach MT can’t blame P.K. anymore.

What excuses will he come up with now?

  27. pmaraw says:

Joe Sakic was at the game tonight, he won’t be trading sweet truck all with us now. Shut out in 4 of last 6, pathetic. Fire Therrien!

  28. Habituated says:

Certainly a rather embarrassing night to be a Habs fan: losing to the Bruins is never good, but a no-show after such a poor stretch of play hurts all the more.

Plenty of reaction here to show I’m not alone in that sentiment.

That said, with the game done, I’ll quickly switch over to something else without any additional fussing. I’ve had plenty of years learning to move on from bad losses, early playoff exits and postseason-free hockey. After all these years, it ain’t not big thing.

I suppose that’s the wrong kind of conditioning, but there you have it.

Worse still, as others have noted, the entertainment value has diminished. That’s an NHL thing – the games just aren’t as good as they used to be, the result of micromanagement that has infested almost all aspects of our lives, from helicopter parents to soul-less workplaces – but is especially tough to take for those of us who’ve been watching since the glory days (cue The Boss).

On the upside, the Habs still manage to be better viewing that the unmitigated crap that passes for much of the television programming these days – anything described with the word “reality” (alternative facts, for sure) is an insult to the senses beyond anything Buttman could even imagine.

  29. habsinnyc says:

Brian Boucher just said the following on NBC:

“If you are a Bruins fan, you have to be awfully encouraged by what you’ve seen as far as the potential of some of these players … these guys have been underperforming for a large chunk of this season. You’re seeing what a little bit of confidence and what a change of voice can do …”

That says it all. MT is no longer getting the most he can from this team. A change is needed.

  30. PK says:

The Montreal Canadiens are a shadow of their glorious past
(and I speak only of the two recent playoff runs into the ECF’s).

    CONFIDENCE…….the most important intangible….

  32. Larry says:

Leafs are nine back with 4 games in hand. They won’t win them all, but they will pass the Habs at some point. Worst team in the league the last third of last season and shaping up for a repeat, with no excuses this time.

  33. Chuck says:

Hmmm… on a positive note, if Therrien gets the axe the new guy gets almost a full week to hit the ground running.

  34. RightNyder says:

P.K.’s nightly chat with the mirror will be just a little sweeter tonight.

  35. colinmyatt says:

It’s gets worser and worser. Never less than 4 goals against. Only hope is that this is MT’s last game. The process is finished

  36. CHicoHab says:

Been shut out 3 of the last 5 games. Could not score with a 5 on 3. Ugly

  37. danhabsfan says:

Sorry, I don’t understand why the Habs are fist pumping.
I get the teams thing, but that was an awful game, to end and awful week,…
The are happy for the mini-vacation I guess.

    • Habituated says:

If the goal is simply to make the playoffs, a four- or five-game win streak courtesy of a coaching change would be money in the bank as far as clinching a berth goes.

A change is long overdue, at any rate.
