Shanahan is completely full of crap. To use the case of Gionta’s collision with Reimer as an example of league impartiality is ridiculous; Gionta didn’t even come close to hitting Reimer with an elbow. To claim that Shanahan cut Gionta any slack is a farce.
Shanahan is Colin Campbell’s employee, plain and simple. And he continues on, perhaps in a more articulate and web-savvy way, in the crony tradition set forth by Campbell.
Pacioretty is right — they’ve now created a Rube Goldberg machine, where players have no way to know the outcome of their hits. Unless they’re from Boston, of course, where the League is trying to manufacture the next great dynasty. If you’re from Boston — home of Colin Campbell’s kid — then you know you’ll get nothing for trying to kill a player. You can even lie afterwards that you didn’t even know who it was you were trying to kill. No problem in the NHL. Evidently, it’s going to take more than that to insult the intelligence of the head office guys in this league.
The NHL is first and foremost, a business. A business with all the drunkenness, and nepotism of the people who run it. You don’t need a license to run an NHL franchise. You just need money, or at the very least, credit.

I can think of many players who fans/media thought would make a big impact, who wound up being a bust but I can’t think of too many who have been real pleasant surprises. Maybe Gorges is a good example…

Obviously hockey has changed a lot over the years, but I’m surprised to see the Habs D, and Price just now, pass the puck in front of Montreal net rather than off to the boards. They’ve done that several times this game and it’s a paradigm shift for me. Bowman would have had conniption fits about the number of times they’ve done that.
Getting tired of hearing the Sharks announcers talk about french. Can they just give play-by-play?
