Liveblog: Canadiens draft Galchenyuk, Malcolm Subban to Boston

Gally

High risk, high reward.

The kid is coming off a serious preseason knee injury, a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

But there is a HUGE upside.

Nicolas Kerdiles or Mike Matheson still available for habs at #33 fingers crossed for Matheson to make it through the Bruins pick, I am going to Yakupov big time or least have a huge Darren Puppa if the Bruins take Matheson

    • Un Canadien errant says:

Stormin, it’s too soon for that, still ten pick to go, now you’re just jinxing it. There needs to be a whole lot more reaches for guys we want to fall.

  8. Les Habitants says:

  13. Un Canadien errant says:

There’s another local favourite gone, but earlier than we thought he’d go.

  14. Mark C says:

Loved Jankowski in the second for the Habs. Big time boom brust prospect.

  15. gmd says:

Wow Flames fans will go nuts.

  16. EricInStL says:

WTF, this will either give Feaster a job for life or they will remember him as the man who screwed up Calgary for the next 5 years

  17. Stormin says:

Great pick by Calgary, this kid is going to be a quick riser getting better and better was hoping Habs got Jankowski

  18. Captain aHab says:

Turns out they COULD actually have traded down again…..holly reaching Batman.

  19. HabFab says:

@24 Cups – Bob Mac is 18 out of 20 for the first round so far.

  20. Marc10 says:

Come on Calgary. Screw up this pick!

  21. aj says:

There’s ALOT of animosity between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. I think what happened last playoffs is still lingering with the Pens fans. Expect more badblood with these two teams when the new season starts.

  22. Slightly Habnormal says:

Ya don’t think the Bruins would draft Subban, do ya?? Looks like they may need a goalie in the future..

    ————————————-
The more you know the less the better!

  23. Chris says:

So if Calgary were fools, according to Pierre McGuire, for not taking Maatta at 14, what will they be if they draft him now at 21? :D

  24. Captain aHab says:

Think Calgary will trade down again?

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  25. JayK-47 says:

Just gotta hope Samuelson and Matteau drop now. Maybe Pleks for a late 1st? Ehhhhh????

  26. RJ says:

    Pittsburgh fans have ZERO class.

  27. Bun E. Laroque says:

J.T. on Twitter: Pierre McGuire’s extravagant comments about prospects reminds me uncomfortably of priests extolling the virtues of altar boys.
    Now that is funny..

  28. frontenac1 says:

    Wow! Holmgren.Tough Room Eh?

  29. HardHabits says:

Did Ribs leave because of the consigliere? Gotta like the Caps moving forward.

8 of the top 10 are D men.

Habs pick one of the two forwards selected in the top 10 and get the best pick over-all. I so wish they had more than one pick in the first round.

Jay Leno 2.0 has been identified

To think that if we had a better GM, we could have gotten Nashville’s 1st rounder for AK46 instead of the Sabres……

  33. Psycho29 says:

Don’t know if it was mentioned earlier but Tim Thomas waved his no movement clause….

  35. Captain aHab says:

Teravainen getting closer to 170 lbs…yikes.

Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.

  36. Un Canadien errant says:

I got confused there for a second. I thought the Hawks drafted Brandon Saad again.

  37. Timo says:

I don’t know how you people can watch the whole draft… this is freaknig boring.

  38. Boomer says:

I wouldn’t mind if we took dansk with one of our 2nd rounders

  39. EricInStL says:

    Goalie time

  40. frontenac1 says:

Ok, back in from fishing, following along with you guys posting, gracias! Happy we got Gally, So how”d he look? Please tell me he looked like the beast I have imagined!

  41. gmd says:

Any chance we get Matteau with our next pick?

  42. Timo says:

Aaah, Turner Stevenson. I forgot about him. He was almost as awesome as MAB but up front.

  43. HFX-HabFan says:

Do the Hawks take the first goalie, or do they take Maatta? Or Teravainen?

  44. Bill says:

Wow. Hertl is a great pick.

  45. alfieturcotte says:

Had Gauthier played his cards right when he traded AK46, he would have gotten Nashville’s 1st rounder instead of the Sabres……

  46. L Elle says:

Our team didn’t need to suck or tank to get a very good player it seems.

No wonder some teams suck perennially. It’s as if they’re drafting in reverse order. ;)

    But very happy with Gally.

  47. Un Canadien errant says:

I hate how RDS and TSN are synching their commercial breaks. It’s almost like they’re planning it that way.

  48. Chris says:

Good pick by the Capitals. Got to see a fair bit of Wilson against the Guelph Storm. Wilson is just mean on the ice. He can be dirty, but he’s got decent speed for a big guy and they are not at all exaggerating his hitting…he hits like a truck.

    • commandant says:

He does all those things. But you can find other players who do the same in the third round or lower, IMO.

      He can’t score.

      Go Habs Go!

      • Chris says:

He was awfully threatening against the Storm. One of the best players on the ice.

      • EricInStL says:

Depends if he’s there to open up the ice or grab garbage goals. You don’t want him to skate around the other team. It’s not his game.

        • commandant says:

I don’t think he has the hands to bury the garbage ala a Holmstrom.

I think he projects like Travis Moen… a 10-15 goal guy at best. Just bigger.

If i wanted a tough forward, I would have gone Samuelsson, Sissons, or Matteau.

          Go Habs Go!
          Visit Your NHL Draft Headquarters

          • EricInStL says:

I secretly want Montreal to pick Samuelsson

          • Chris says:

The Capitals don’t really need goal-scorers. They already have Backstrom, Ovechkin and Johansson (who is looking like a great player). Mathieu Perreault also looks like he’s got some good hands, and now they’ve added Forsberg who reputedly has one of the best shots in the draft.

With Carlson and Green, they’ve got some good shooters from the backend. They have a good goalie in Holtby. Alzner and Schultz give them good stay-at-home defenders.

They got what they wanted. By adding Wilson, they get another big body who can go to the front of the net and screen and cause some havoc. The other guys might be good picks too, but I think Wilson could be a nice addition.

  49. Timo says:

So when I am like 60… 7 ft players will be a norm.

  50. EricInStL says:

    Tom Wilson is a beast

  51. Timo says:

I just tuned in. Looks like Calgary stole the show. Good for them.

  52. commandant says:

Washington Capitals select Turner Stevenson 2.0.

  53. habsfaninboston says:

Tom Wilson is a big kid.

  54. Marc10 says:

The upshot is we’re going to get someone we didn’t expect in round 2. The bad news is WAS and Buffalo are going to be loaded.

Imagine if the Sabres trade Miller to Columbus for their first rounder next year… God help us!

    • K-hab25 says:

Didn’t Columbus just trade for Bobrovsky? I really don’t see Buffalo trading Miller, ever.

      Proud Pricebot since 2006/2007

      • Marc10 says:

The Enroth kid is the real deal. If Buf is rebuilding, they could do a lot worse than to get full value from Miller.

It might just be the kind of gamble you’d pull off – especially considering what’s in the pipeline for next year’s draft.

        • K-hab25 says:

I’m not sold on Enroth being “the real deal”, especially if that means trading Miller. People have short term memories, but Miller was just up for the vezina last year. This year he took that BS hit from Lucic that knocked his and Buffalo’s year off track. Late in the year Buffalo started playing alot better when Miller was back and healthy.

          Proud Pricebot since 2006/2007

      • Marc10 says:

Brobovsky is a stop-gap measure. I can’t imagine Columbus rating him anymore than the rest of us. They still need a goalie.

        • K-hab25 says:

Bobrovsky is just as good as Enroth. How is one a “stop gap” and the other is “the real deal”?

          Proud Pricebot since 2006/2007

          • Marc10 says:

Disagree on that. From what I’ve seen of Enroth, he’s terrific and the future in Buffalo.

I just don’t rate Brobovsky. Columbus needs a warm body in net and I guess he fits the part… but he won’t be the solution in goal.

    • Chris says:

Not necessarily…there haven’t been any reaches yet. All these guys are pretty much going within 5 picks or so of when they were expected to go.

      • Marc10 says:

I think Finn boy just fell quite a bit to land in Chicago.

I suspect the next 10 are going to go in very different directions. There’s Philly going left field, non:-)

We might get lucky! Fingers crossed.

  55. Un Canadien errant says:

Sens grab Cody Ceci. Good for a local kid to get drafted on the hometown team.

    • Gerry H says:

Incredible. Kid makes it all the way to the NHL without ever being billeted. Born and raised in Orleans, drafted by the 67s, now a Senator. Will he play in Bingo?

  56. --Habs-- says:

Good news here unless a trade the Habs have 2 picks in round 2 one of which at 33. That’s almost like round 1.

  57. That's-Hockey says:

Not concerned about what we get tonight or tomorrow. I’m concerned about what we’re gonna have come October the rest will fall in place….

  58. alfieturcotte says:

Does anyone have a link to a live stream to the draft. NBC sports just ended their coverage…..Thanks,

  59. Chris says:

Originally I thought that Ottawa might jump at Subban at #15. But with Teravainen still on the board, I think they’re going to pick him. He can be a nice replacement for Alfredsson, who’s got at most a year left in him.

  60. EricInStL says:

Feaster is obviously on drugs quick offer him anything for Iginla

  61. Bill says:

Teravainen still on the board for Ottawa … unbelievable. They have got to be loving this.

    Full Breezer 4 Life

  62. Boomer says:

not going to happen but wouldn’t it be nice if teravainen was available tomorrow?

  63. Marc10 says:

Like Chris says… It’s amazing to see guys of comparable skill sets (apparently it was Yak and everybody else) falling so far.

Look at the Sabres. Going hard.

That team badly needs to rebuild so this makes sense. I’d go for it and trade Miller for Parise (provided he signs…) while I’m at it.

  64. Carta-Hab says:

I guess Calgary has started to buy into the idea of a rebuild? More picks the better?

  65. PrimeTime says:

McGuire is such an idiot. Love it when Bob disagrees with him!

  66. EricInStL says:

    Nice move Buffalo

  67. HFX-HabFan says:

Wow, Buffalo got two big centres…they’ll continue to be a tough team to play against in the future

  68. habsfaninboston says:

    Bad move by Calgary.

  69. jedimyrmidon says:

Uuuh, what!? What was Feaster thinking?

  70. gmd says:

    Dear Pierre,

    Please shut up.

    Regards,
    The World

  71. Chris says:

    Teravainen or Wilson to Buffalo?

  72. commandant says:

    14 for 21 and 42….

That means we should be able to get about 22 for our two picks.

    Go Habs Go!

  73. Bill says:

    Calgary … idiotic!!

  74. Un Canadien errant says:

Joe Nieuwendyk looked heartbroken when explaining that he had to trade Mike Ribeiro.

  75. Bill says:

Fuck TSN. They keep showing slow-mo replays of Morgan Rielly pulling that Leaf sweater on. Like I care!!
