Liveblog: Canadiens draft Galchenyuk, Malcolm Subban to Boston

High risk, high reward.

The kid is coming off a serious preseason knee injury, a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

But there is a HUGE upside.

AUDIO from Pittsburgh: Alex Galchenyuk | Marc Bergevin

Comparing Galchenyuk to NHL stars. Would you settle for an Anze Kopitar clone?

Galchenyuk on Twitter: @AGally94

Here’s a scouting report. And some video:

  1. Carta-Hab says:

Wow! Seems like a good trade for both teams.

  2. aj says:

Wow! Jordan Staal for the 8th pick. What a big gamble by Carolina!!!

EDIT: Pittsburgh better not get either a Forsberg or a Grigorenko!

    • LA Loyalist says:

You think? Stall a proven NHL player who WANTS to be there vs a prospect? You have to remember that the game has to be sold in many of these U.S. cities, and having players that are committed to the team and the community is a big part of that.

      I think it’s a win-win for both teams.

  3. Stormin says:

Hoping for Mike Matheson, Nicolas Kerdiles or Mark Jankowski to be around at #33 pick or like I said maybe just maybe if the slide turns into a snowball effect for Grigorenko, you never Know

  4. HFX-HabFan says:

Wow, huge trade. Penguins trade Staal on his wedding day.

  5. Un Canadien errant says:

Wow, was it Bob McKenzie or Elliotte Friedman who had Jordan Staal to Carolina for a first and Brandon Sutter?

  6. Hoegarden says:

What a trade…. Great for both teams.

  7. habsfaninboston says:

    Wow! Jordan Staal to Carolina.

  8. EricInStL says:

    has to be for Forsberg

  9. Habs64 says:

    Staal to Canes! wowow

  10. sreuel says:

Why is Boone posting what we see on TSN

  11. EricInStL says:

    holy crap !!!!!

  12. EricInStL says:

Dumbas father looks like the guy who had to make the doughnuts…

  13. Un Canadien errant says:

    Guy Lapointe sighting!

  14. Strummer says:

After a palyer is drafted TSN displays where they ranked among the prospects in various strength tests.

Morgan Reilly- #1 Right Hand Grip.

Does that mean he doesn’t have a girlfriend?

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  15. Habsolutely says:

Why didn’t Burke take Trouba or Dumba?

  16. Adidess says:

As happy as we’re all are about our pick, this does have a feeling of premature, eh … what is this thing called, … ‘conclusion’ to it -)

The build-up was so great, you sort of wished the intense pleasure of being in that moment would last a bit longer. Now, I can’t wait to see Gally play already!!

  17. oneslowfiveoh says:

trade up 2nd rounder to get Tom Wilson. Perfect draft!

  18. Boomer says:

Oh right i forgot about Schultz!! good pick with lindholm.
Dumba, teravainen and forsberg are good steals now

  19. boing007 says:

If Grigorenko keeps sinking, who knows?

    Richard R
Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.

  20. Carta-Hab says:

What? How far is Forberg going to fall?

  21. Habs64 says:

  22. nickster13 says:
    look under awards!!! FUNNY!

“I don’t wanna see Maurice tonight, I want the rocket!”

  23. aj says:

I’m having a feeling Anaheim will get Forsberg. Once they do get this guy, they might start working on a trade for Bobby Ryan. The Habs should be working at this point to make a trade.

  24. jo_maka says:

    Take off the jacket
    Loosen up the tie
    Step inside the booth
    Super Burke is aliiiiive

Sorry, too much celebratory shots over here

  25. Stormin says:

Grigorenko will be a huge slider as I predicted late in the Q season,, he may even be around tomorrow when the Habs pick at #33

  26. club_de_hockey says:

Morgan Rielly kinda looks like a young Phil Kessel

  27. Hamayoune says:

    Yeah babyy!!!!!

  28. Boomer says:

If i were anaheim i’d go for forsberg

    • Strummer says:

If Pierre McGuire said that 1000 H I/O posters would say they’re glad he didn’t get the Hab GM job.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  29. jo_maka says:

Weird that Burkie didn’t go with the most truculent Dumba or Trouba.
He’s basically taking this year’s Dan Boyle. Not bad. Hats off, Burkie. Or should I say cool tie.
But we got Ali G so that’s what’s important. Looking forward to making you frown in disbelief again next year, Mr That’s-Classified 🙂

    • D Mex says:

Maybe he thinks it would make his ‘ spectacular ‘ acquisition of the highly coveted Dion Phaneuf appear to be as ordinary as it is turning out to be.

      ALWAYS Habs –
      D Mex

  30. Habfan10912 says:

Brian Burke is a bully. Reminds me of certain posters here. 🙂

  31. jedimyrmidon says:

Wow, what a relief, Galchenyuk!!! YEAAAH!

I had been dreading this moment all week. I hope he pans out!

  32. Strummer says:

Brian Burke has buttoned up his collar and straightened his tie.

    Sure sign of the apocalypse.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  33. shootdapuck says:

    Mcguire pumping the LAFFS pick!

Is he after Burke’s job now?

The cerebral insight of PJ Stock:

“Le problem est Markov n’a pas jouer un seul game cette annee”
“Louis Leblanc est un kid locale”
    ” I have a pet peeve”

    • Strummer says:

He pumped the Habs pick too.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

      • shootdapuck says:

        Only cause he had to!

        GM is still his friend!

The cerebral insight of PJ Stock:

“Le problem est Markov n’a pas jouer un seul game cette annee”
“Louis Leblanc est un kid locale”
        ” I have a pet peeve”

  34. Mavid says:

I wish McGuire would tear something in his face so he would stop talking

  35. Rooster says:

    I’m jus saying imagine
    Parise – GALCHENYUK – Ryan
    Cole -dd – max PAC
    Leblanc – Eller – gionta
THatd be a pretty good top. 9 …

  36. SlovakHab says:

    Time to follow:!/AGally94

  37. Bun E. Laroque says:

Does anyone remember who last wore #12? I can’t think of anyone after Cournoyer.

  38. PeterD says:

So now we trade up to grab Grigorenko in the middle of the 1st round…that would give us some size and talent down the middle…

  39. aj says:

I’m wondering if the Leafs really did made the right decision by picking Morgan Reilly? Is he a really needed Dman there? I was hoping they get Forsberg. But then, That’s Burke’s call. Oh well……

  40. EricInStL says:

    It’s FESTIVUS time !!!!!!!!!!

  41. HFX-HabFan says:

Seems most of the Laughs’ media were surprised by the Reilly pick.

  42. Stormin says:

Reilly reminds me of Paul Coffey, incredible offensive def talent

  43. Rooster says:

Dd is a terrific center why would
We put him on the wing I’d much rather another big hard nosed winger that can score

  44. Stormin says:

Damn that is an awesome pick by the Leafs

  45. neumann103 says:

    Burke’s big splash? Rielly?

    “Et le but!”

  46. thorandresson says:

Thank god I’m not a Leaf fan, I wouldn’t be too happy about this pick.

  47. temekuhabs says:

He’s the big Centre we needed, hopefully the knee is sound

  48. Habs64 says:

    Reilly hahaha

  49. Strummer says:

    McGuire, McKenzie and Button approve.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

  50. D Mex says:

Burke talking deal ? He doesn’t look too happy.
Maybe he isn’t overly enthused about the name he may be announcing in about 60 seconds …

    ALWAYS Habs –
    D Mex

  51. Adidess says:

Never tought i’d say this, but the fruit of tanking is delicious -)

  52. Stormin says:

Waiting and hoping to trade up for Mike Matheson, or hope he is still available tomorrow at #33 ,, where is Alyonka Larionov she needs more air time

  53. HabInToronto says:

    Alex Galchenyuk….welcome to Montreal!

  54. English is not a Crime says:

This when Burke trades this pick and their next three first round picks for Thomas?

  55. HFX-HabFan says:

He can’t wear 12, but 94 has been vacant since the immortal Yannic Perrault…

  56. nickster13 says:

Great pick for the Islanders. Reinhart, and getting Visnovsky. They’re starting to put something together on the island.

“I don’t wanna see Maurice tonight, I want the rocket!”

    • Un Canadien errant says:

Really impressed with Pierre McGuire’s encyclopedic knowledge there, he rattled off the names of the Islanders’ defencemen with ease. He’s quite the hockey man.

  57. HabFab says:

    Ms Reinhart looks alright…just saying.

  58. Un Canadien errant says:

I’m having a little bit of buyer’s remorse, maybe we should have taken Mikhail Grigorenko?….

  59. Habilis says:

Burkie talking to Wild GM… looking to move down since we nabbed Galy?

  60. habsfaninboston says:

    Hell yeah! Good pick MB.

  61. H.Upmann says:

Alright!!! Great start to the weekend!

  62. Rooster says:

And then with the money saved by sending gomer and kaberle to the ahl sign both parise and paranteau !!!

  63. Vladdy Mondavi says:

Did anyone else hear the Ribeiro to WSH deal?

  64. Boomer says:

Bold prediction… in 5 years Galchenyuk > Yakupov

  65. Rooster says:

Pleks officially has to go now I say Pleks + borque for bobby Ryan

    • Habsolutely says:

Galchenyuk won’t make the habs this season. Pleks needs to stay. Gomez is the one that needs to take a hike.

      • LA Loyalist says:

Yes. We need to be patient. Let him play a year and put on 10 lbs. Maybe a few games at the end of the season during Tanque II, the sequel.

The next move is to try and get Bobby Ryan (I don’t think we have a shot at Parise).

I’m surprised Ducks dealt Visnosky to the Island. But with Cam Fowler in hand I guess they can afford to.

  66. slapshot777 says:

This is why Burke looked so pissed off. It was killing him knowing that he was not going to get Galenchuk

  67. Adidess says:

No vocal opposition to the pick as of right now on HIO. A rare thing…

  68. Habitant in Surrey says:

    …well, UNBELIEVABLE !!!
…We FINALLY get WHAT ‘most of Us’ wanted
    …Galchenyuk !
…nothin’ now to piss about 🙁
    …or, am I being ‘premature’ ?

  69. jols101 says:

Thank you Bergevin and Timmins and whoever else helped make this desicion. As a long time Hab fan i am super pumped and am soooo happy about this pick. Love it….

  70. Hoegarden says:

Now trade Gomez for a bag of pucks and make it a perfect day !

  71. aj says:

Congrats to Galchenyuk and the Habs!

  72. boing007 says:

    Ribeiro to the Caps.

    Richard R
Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.

    • aj says:

Watching Ribeiro all along with the Stars last season already tells you that he’s not happy. That’s why he’s doing alot of antics to piss-off the organization. Can’t blame him why he got traded.

  73. Habs64 says:

    Too Bad Leafs!!!

  74. ont fan says:

    Well that was fun.Thanks Columbus.

  75. JayK-47 says:

Awfully crowded at Center around here.

    • K-hab25 says:

Gomez is gone and DD can be moved to the wing, if and that’s a big if, Galchenyuk makes the team this year. Leblanc will probably be a winger in the future regardless of this pick.

      Proud Pricebot since 2006/2007
