Liveblog: Canadiens beat Senators 4-3 in Shootoutout

GallyOtt

The Canadiens blew leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in regulation time.

But goals by Alex Galcheyuk and Lars Eller won the Shootout and kept the Canadiens atop the Eastern Conference standings, where they’ve been for 21 days.

Ottawa had three shots in the third period … one of which was Patrick Wiercioch’s very stoppable “drive” that went through Carey Price’s legs.

Robin Lehrer was bombarded with 45 shots … kind of like Ben Bishop the last time.

The Canadiens got goals from Lars Eller and, on the power play, Brendan Gallagher and P.K. Subban in regulation.

Ottawa scorers were Mika Zibanejad, Daniel F. Alfredsson and Wiercioch.

Price made 29 saves in regulation and two in the Shootout (Daniel F. and Kyle Turris).

Ottawa outhit the home team by a whopping 39-18.

The Shootout

Galchenyuk: GOAL! Shelf Daddy after six moves

Daniel F.: Save

DD: Save

Silfverberg: Beautiful goal

Eller: GOAL!

Turris: SAVE!!

Not that I care when a Bruins player gets hurt, but I wonder if the Sens owner will go nuts and claim a guy like Chris Neil has no place in this league.

    • Habfan10912 says:

Frank, would you please tell me if I’m wrong here? I thought Neil’s hit on Kelly was a intent to injure play. I saw his leg stick out looking to clip Kelly. We didn’t hear a peep from the league concerning this hit. Not that I want to defend the Bruins here but that hit to me was every bit suspendable play.

Ottawa are 27th in goals/game, but 1st in goals against/game, averaging under 2 goals per game against. Incredible, especially with 3 rookies on D.

Montreal can’t afford to fall behind to a team like that.

    • Bill says:

They are really hard to score against, and Daniel F. always seems to score. Chris Neil typically gets a couple of his handful of goals every year against the Habs.

  24. Chuck says:

I’m not a fan of Mason Raymond’s shoot out goal, or any that use the spin-o-rama, for that matter (yes, including Eller’s). It essentially gives the shooter carte-blanche to block the goalie from making the save, something that is technically illegal during regular play.

I would have laughed if Raymond had backhanded it over the net instead of tucking it up under the bar.

To those considering MaCLean a better Jack Adams candidate than Carlyle.

Would you rather have the healthy Leafs roster or the injury riddled Senators lineup?

I’ll take that Senators lineup thanks. And because of that my nod goes to Carlyle.

But all things considered. Therrien would win the award if it were voted on today. Anyone else winning would be larceny.

      • Habitant in Surrey says:

        …shhh, Tom was on a roll :)

      • Loonie says:

No intended disrespect to Joel Quenneville but with Toews, Kane, Keith, Hossa, Sharp, Seabrook, Stalberg, Bolland and Crawford anything other than winning the division should probably result in his dismissal.

He’s failed to or in a couple of cases has taken him considerable time to get positive results from talents like Frolik, Olesz, Leddy and Kruger.

They have great high end talent and are very deep.

        • Habitant in Surrey says:

…there are examples of teams with great players that have never played to their potential …it takes a special coach to motivate and take talent to other levels, as a team

…I have commented many times that Nonis and Carlyle will make the Weeds a very competitive team …the best thing for them was to throw Burke’s ego over-board, he was consuming all the oxygen of that team, leaving little for the team

…but, MacLean without his best goaltender, his best forward, and the best defenseman in the NHL has kept the Senators afloat despite all the odds, with management that has drafted very well

…Quenneville has brought together his exceptional talent as a team to win 28 consecutive undefeated streak

…Therrien, Whom I was seriously despondent when appointed Coach has similarly brought together a team currently in first place in the East …a Team, for whatever reason was last last season …more points than the Bruins and the Penguins (with a Crosby & a Malkin)

…for certain Carlyle rates to be considered among the contenders for the Adams, but right now Therrien and Quenneville are more than a stride ahead of him

      • Habfan17 says:

Or Anaheim? Personally, I think with all the key injuries in Ottawa, Maclean would have to be in the 3 finalists. He is missing his top 3 players!

        Habfan17

    • Garbo says:

I’d be shocked if either got it.

    • Marc10 says:

      I’d go with:

      1) Therrien
      2) Boudreau
      3) Carlyle
      4) Maclean

But there’s still a lot of hockey to be played and all have done a remarkable job thus far. And you could make a great case for all of them.

    • Bill says:

Carlyle and the Leafs have been – hate to use the word – unbelievably lucky. Getting outshot and outchanced but scoring at an unusually high rate.

I actually think the roll they are on can last all season long, in such a short year. I also think that if they are unlucky enough to face a more experienced team in the playoffs that they will get eaten alive. You can’t fight your way to a playoff series win.

But I still have to recognize that they are having a truly fluky season, and for that reason I wouldn’t give too much credit to Carlyle, though he is certainly a good coach.

Lupol lit it up for the Leafs last year. Time for another coaching change?

  37. HabsWinn-ipeg says:

Since Toronto beat the Habs 6-0, their record is 8-6-1 for 17 of a possible 30 points. The Habs: 11-1-3 for 25 of a possible 30 points. But we need more brawlers!

  38. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Ah okay. They need a puck mover in the back end. Dion Phaneuf just isn’t that good(obviously). Liles looked decent against the Habs in that 6-0 game. Carlyle needs to give his head a shake.

  39. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Yes sir. The Canadiens have a nice mix on their team. Them not having a tough-guy renders guys like Orr and McLaren pretty much useless. Unless they run someone. Then we could use an enforcer. Lol

  40. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

I haven’t seen Jake Gardiner play a whole lot. What does he bring to the table? Why don’t the Leafs play him?

    • smiley says:

He’s an extremely skilled puck moving defenseman. They got him from Anaheim in the Lupul/Gardiner for Beauchemin trade. He had a concussion and they are giving him the “Nazim Kadri” treatment with the Marlies(as in time in the AHL is good for you because it worked for Kadri). Leafs fans want him in the line-up.

    • ont fan says:

Not Carlyles type of guy, much like Lupul. When he doen’t like you it’s hard to get back in.

  41. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Picking Redden over Chara might have been the difference in that cup final against Anaheim.

  42. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

    I mean, perhaps he’s too old-school now.

  43. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

Maybe Carlyle is over-the-top now and isn’t sure what he’s doing anymore?

  44. habs_54321 says:

i am amazed that j.m liles, komiserak, AND gardiner are all not playing with the leafs by choice not by neccesity i can understand komiserak but liles and gardiner? really? what is so special about kostka and holzer? they are both minus 7 and 8.. waste of talented defencemen if you ask me

  45. Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

@Loonie I read one of your posts in a previous blog. I just wanted to say I agree with your assessment of the 4th line. If they’re stopping opposing teams from scoring, they’re doing their job just fine.

    • Garbo says:

I think the 4th line is doing just fine. Moen seems to have lost a bit of his physical edge from the past year, but as you said, they’re doing their job.

          • Garbo says:

Suppose its hard to compare the two – with the cap implications that came with Gomez.

My only point is both “moves” required some great imcompetence on the part of management.

I don’t know what’s worse. Letting a superstar go for nothing, or trading a very bright prospect for essentially an agreement to lower your own cap by $7 million for years.

          • Loonie says:

If you feel that strongly about this maybe you should have shown Mr. Gainey the reading your crystal ball gave you before it was too late.

          • Garbo says:

Not too strongly. And hindsight is certainly helpful for us armchair GMs. But that’s why GMs get paid the big bucks, to use their skill, knowledge, and resources to avoid these blunders.

But I do believe Gainey made one of the worst trades in recent history. Is it worse than letting Chara walk? I don’t know, or care. I think both were very bad moves.

      • ont fan says:

Chara being let go was almost like McDonagh? Really?

    • Saintpatrick33 says:

…for the foreseeable future I will be annoyingly and shamelessly crusading for Our Montreal Canadiens to retire Toe Blake’s number 6 …and add His banner in the rafters next to Our other former Greats

…now some of You may believe Toe was only a Great Coach, and as a Player, did not quite rate such an honor …and/or do not want yet another low-number unavailable to contemporary Players
…maybe forgetting Toe Blake won an NHL scoring championship, the Hart Trophy and a Lady Byng, and led Our Habs in scoring in 6 seasons of His Hall Of Fame playing career …He was an essential component with The Rocket and Elmer Lach on ‘The Punch Line’ which was the most feared scoring line of it’s day

…most remember Toe Blake as the genius Coach of the Montreal Canadiens at the cusp of Our Golden Era …the Golden Era that most of Us were inspired by to follow Our Habs as if it was ‘a religion’ unto It’s own

…Toe Blake’s name is on 11 rings of the Stanley Cup; 8 as Our Coach, 2 as a Player for the Montreal Canadiens and one as a Montreal Maroon

…Toe Blake was the ‘heart and soul’ Whom inspired and ‘showed the way’ to Our great Players of the time, both as a Player and as Our Coach

…His Legacy is greatly taken for granted, I strongly believe, by the fact Toe Blake’s number 6 is not represented yet in the rafters of the Bell Centre

…the totality of Toe Blake’s legacy, as a Player and Our Coach, to the History and exceptional success of the Montreal Canadiens as the most famous brand in the hockey world is way past the overdue stage

…I wish to request all Montreal Canadiens Fans to join with Ian Cobb and I to right a wrong

…I suggested to Ian to theme this year’s Summit on Toe Blake …to incorporate some homage to Toe …maybe even make a request to Hurley’s Tavern to try to replicate the ambiance of the famed former Toe Blake’s Tavern

…I will leave that to Ian, of what is doable in that regard …knowing Ian, He is more than capable (Note Bene: such may not be possible this October, because of the projected lock-out)

…meanwhile, some clear input must be made by Habs’ Fans that agree with the objective, to let Their feelings and opinions be known to Geoff Molson and Montreal Canadiens Management
…that means You !!! Boys and Girls

  62. mike3131 says:

Personally, I would hate to see any of our roster players get traded at this point. Don’t mess with the chemistry of a first place team. However, what intrigues me is how much would it take to land Corey Perry? Can he be acquired without dealing a roster player? Would a conditional first (if he signs), 2nd (and maybe 3rd), and 2-3 prospects not named Tinordi and Beaulieu (if possible) be enough? What do you think?

    Edit: Would ANA take Bourque?

    https://twitter.com/mikelangerr

    • TheDagger says:

Maybe if ANA was down and out of it, but they are crushing it as legit contenders this year. Any trade they will make they will be expecting to get back a roster-ready player that can fill the lost production of Perry, or at least a good portion of it.

    • Phil C says:

I just don’t see how Anaheim trades Perry when they have a great chance to win the Cup. Their window to win is now, because many of their key players are at the end of their careers. If anything, Anaheim should be big-time buyers, not sellers. Habs could then take a run at Perry in the off-season.

Good stuff! Here’s to the beantown farting buffoons to get spanked in all their games.

Subotai: They blow where I live too. In the north of every man’s heart.
Conan: It’s never too late, Subotai.
Subotai: No. It would only lead me back here another day. In even worse company.
Conan: For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm.

  87. BCG says:

Agree. With Therrien’s more offensive minded play (vs. Martin’s ‘play-scared’ defense first style), Eller is rediscovering his offensive touch. It’s great to see.

Richer, I think, would have kept it up if not for his struggle with depression. Not sure what kind of support Richer received back in the day, but I suspect not enough.

  91. Steve C. says:

Then find us a more capable goalie. I hear Jamie McLennan is available. Patrick Roy could always come out of retirement. Will Dominik Hasek ever officially retire? Robert Mayer is like…Swiss and Czech…that’d fit right into the multi-national Canadiens. Oh wait, what about that young superstar Dustin Tokarski that MB just acquired? He won a world junior gold medal right? He’s primed for success. Price is a bum. Trade him…to…meh, I guess the Flyers. They need a goalie. Bryz is the answer in exchange: big contract, bigger enigma, yes!

do you watch st louis games? its a rather complicated situation down there… but just cause he doesn’t like price’s performance doesn’t mean you have to trash a guy who was good for the organization when he was here either.

price has to step up. he hasn’t been great he’s been alright to good. at 6.5m/yr he has to play like a top goalie every night.

  104. habsfan0 says:

    Shhhh!

To paraphrase Yogi Berra..90% of goaltending is 50% mental.
Price loses his concentration at times.

  105. Steve C. says:

It happens once in awhile. Everyone goes through tough spurts. And Budaj is NOT outplaying Price. Give Budaj the amount of games that Price has had, and his numbers would be Colorado-esque. Don’t drink the Anti-Price Kool-Aid. It’s poison, you know that deep down. Kudos for supporting him though. Players appreciate it I’m certain.

  106. ProHabs says:

They may need to trade Price in order to afford Subban. PK is dominating. The best d-man in the league. They should have signed him long term before the start of the season when they had the chance.

  107. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

  109. MattZ says:

I agree he is struggling because there is a questionable goal almost every game recently, but in all honestly he doesn’t ”suck” enough to lose games as proven by our record and that he leads the league in wins. How can you say Budaj is outplaying Price when ALL of Budaj’s stats are worse, all… You are entitled to your opinion, but I do not agree with you.

  110. Lix says:

I believe he’s struggling right now, I also believe he will snap out of it as all incredibly talented players do. The fact that they’ve been winning despite him explodes the myth that this team can only win when Price stands on his head…I for one love that. Imagine if he hits his stride for the playoffs and the team keeps executing this great team plan. The sky is the limit.

  111. jon514 says:

    Budaj is not out-playing Price.

Price has 14 wins to lead the NHL.
Budaj has 4 (possibly to lead the backups?)

    Price’s GAA = 2.39
    Budaj’s GAA = 2.47

    Price’s PCT = .910
    Budaj’s PCT = .903

Price also plays against Boston + Pittsburgh (more often than Budaj)

I agree he tends to let 1 soft goal per game. But I would say most goalies do. He’s the winning-est goalie in the league right now. I think he’s doing just fine!

  112. Ozmodiar says:

well, in that case, I’m off to buy my Huberdeau jersey. Can you tell me what number he’ll wear with the Habs?

  113. Chuck says:

    Edited. Good Call.

  124. alfieturcotte says:

Easy to explain – Habs are winning in spite of average goaltending because each line and defense performing. Price has yet to steal a game (Boone’s words, not mine) because of the team in front of him. If players were not doing well or underperforming, Habs would be average in standings, same as our “stud” goalie.

WOW well said, I love Hockey and from my first memories have always bled Blue Blanc Rouge, but i love to discuss flaws as much as point out brilliance in my favorite players, the mental part of hockey is part of every discussion i like to have discussions about a players ability and performance in any stretch of games or given game, but with Price in here his flock sees no flaws, I think he is playing weak this year and needs to step up on off days and work his butt off to improve, we need him to be better for any playoff success.

I previously stated that I wouldn’t trade Price for Stamkos, because I didn’t believe we could find a goalie who could replace his minutes.

I now feel MB should make this trade, because I’ve located a relatively unknown goalie, who apparently stops EVERYTHING thrown at him with ease.

And some people go out of their way to point out when a puck goes by him and jump all over it when it happens. It’s like they have this personal vendetta against the guy. They WANT him to fail so they can prove a point. That’s not much of a fan if you ask me.

First of all, that’s bull that you haven’t seen any Price haters on this site. They are probably 25% of the posters.

I get a kick out of reading posts by guys who actually think they know what’s “wrong” with Price’s game and how he could be better. I’m sure these guys are all professional goalies. That was sarcasm. Obviously they are actually couch potatoes with some kind of anger problem.

  142. donmarco says:

He left a lot of room up there. I’ll always give him the benefit of the doubt, though. Just thought this didn’t have to be a 3 point game. I still don’t get how the Sens are doing it. Good for them, tough.

  143. ebk says:

he got caught by a good goal scorer, cheating to the middle, left his post early, it happens.

  144. donmarco says:

It does. And the cheating cost us a goal at the end of the period. I’m a Price fan, but he paid for that cheating.

  145. savethepuck says:

Many wait for a bad goal or bad game as an opportunity to pounce, and that’s what bothers me. I’m one of his hugest fans, but I’m not going to say he was lights out tonight. I think the reason so many of us defend him no matter what, is because of the #’s that jump on the kid every time he let’s in a bad goal or has a bad game. There has never been a tender in the history of the game that hasn’t given up bad goals or gone thru stretches of bad games, and the team is winning during this.
