Liveblog: Canadiens edge Senators 2-1, extend home winning streak

habs-web-art

It wasn’t easy.
Carey Price had to make 32 saves.
But your Montreal Canadiens edged the Ottawa Senators 2-1 for their fifth straight win at the Bell Centre.

All the scoring was done in the first period.

Jacob Silfverberg split the Canadiens defence and beat Carey Price on an Ottawa power play less than two minutes into the game.

David Desharnais, with his third goal of the weekend, tied it up 55 seconds later, converting a pass from surprise starter Max Pacioretty.

Then with Kyle Turris just out of the box and too late to help, Erik Cole gave the Canadiens a lead that would stand up for 48-plus minutes.

Was out at the saloon watching the Habs after the Fronts game so I missed the Parros/Scott tilt but I caught it on youtube. Kinda hard to see but it looked like Parros snuck in a good left on the Button which dropped Scott.

  3. frontenac1 says:

Great Win by Les Boys today. I love the games since the lock out ended.Lots of Fights! I signed up for NHL Centre Ice and at least a couple of good Tilts in each game! Well worth the 49 Bucks

  4. Cal says:

Good, hard-earned and well-fought for 2 points. Lucky with the interference call wiping out a goal, but the Habs outplayed and outworked the Senators. Great to see Cole backhand that puck in and the whole slew of other opportunities that he was on the ice creating.
MaxPac is the Wolverine. Price is for real this season. Markov is back. Subban is just warming up.
It may be twenty below, but I am starting to feel warm all over. :)

They are keeping us on the edge of our seats again!

This is a team that is going to make a bit of noise in the league this year. First time that I can remember that we have had 4 solid lines and 6 solid D to roll.
In this short tight schedule we are going to need all hands on deck every night.

Wed. night in our barn we will entertain the Bean Town Bruin boys, this should be a large test.

  8. Marc10 says:

I’m curious as to how long OTT can keep this pace up without Spezza around. They are being extremely well coached and their goalie is superb.

Another big test with Boston coming up. Lots more in the tank with the first line coming on and PK back in the fold.

  9. naweed235 says:

So who’s sitting next game in favor of White? M.T. can’t possibly have White as a scratch against the Goons can he?

    • habstrinifan says:

      Armstrong?

      • chanchilla says:

Armstrong is MTs boy, i don’t think he’ll be sitting.

*it’s the only thing that i haven’t liked about what MT has done, armstrong has been awful defensively, and invisible offensively, he definitely hasn’t earned a spot on this roster. I think Blunden will play harder, work harder, and is a smarter hockey player as well.

        • habstrinifan says:

Eating crow on Armstrong.. I really thought he was gonna be a ‘huge’ addition for us. Did you see yesterdays post by someone re Blunden needing to be more in shape? Maybe that has kept him back.

          • chanchilla says:

I had not heard that, i think they sent him back to the ahl anyways. I had reservations, wanted to wait it out to see if maybe he was just rusty, but he just hasn’t done anything worth noting, you just never notice him. I think if MT benched eller after the one game, you figure after 8 of armstrong doing nothing he has to go, but i still don’t see him being benched.

      • naweed235 says:

Armstrong seems like the logical answer…

      • I’m with ya. The little things players like Armstrong should be doing aren’t being done. Skate two ways, check, get the puck deep, and get off. Simple.

Those refs were terrible for both teams so stop whining Sens faithful. That penalty on Plekanec in the first minute, Atrocious! That diving penalty on Bouillion, Disgusting!
And the topper that boarding penalty on Gorges, Criminal!
That ref should be sent back to junior or the minors.
The disallowed goal was ridiculous as well.
With the thugs coming on Wednesday I bet we end up with more penalties.

The owner and much of the staff are Habs fans. Lots of Habs jerseys on game nights. They also seem to be boxing fans.

I subscribe to a cable package with RDS so get games on TV but Kilgours is stilla good place to see the Habs

Neumann is right… Kilgours is a great place to watch a Habs game in Toronto.
Not the biggest place so you want to get there early.

    • Full lineup, the opponents get screwed on a goalie interference call, and a Niners Superbowl all on the same day??

      Hell ya!

      Go Niners!

  16. Habfan10912 says:

My take on Karlson. One of the best players in the league. I also think its great that the league stars are being touted. It grows the game Imo. Today the HNIC crew may have gone a little overboard but good golly, that dude is a player. That being said today the best player on the ice was Carey Price.

  17. rhino514 says:

Four points in a back to back, and not against pushover teams, either. unbelievable!
For the Eller fans, don´t worry, he will get his opportunities. There are always injuries. Did a good job on the PK.
But since many brought up his goal yesterday (to make it 4-0), I have to bring up the brain-dead penalty he took today. If the Sens score on that PP the whole game changes and we are probably toast.

  18. Dudley the Dog says:

A nice win — two skating teams make for good hockey ( in spite of bad refs). Excellent puck pressure by the Habs — in both ends of the rink. Something we never saw last year. Patches is an animal to come back so soon. Chucky will be a great centre in this league – unbelievable to be so talented at 18.

  19. FunkyCrabChairNF says:

John Scott was OWNED by George Parros, who pounded his face, choked him out while they were both standing. Then he exits the box and ties the game. But like I said yesterday, les Sabres sont racaille.

  22. Phil C says:

Dispite PJ’s outrage, you still can’t interfere with the goalie outside the crease if you do it intentionally. But Montreal still got a very favorable interpretation of rule 69.1.

69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper – This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review.

No Martin, Prusts battles DEEP in their zone, Cole hits at center ice, we don’t GIVE the opposition our blue line, we make them earn it (and Karlsson earned it a lot.. that’s a pretty good Ottawa team, even without Spezza)

      • 25insight says:

@on2ndthought, i think you nailed it. Ottawa is good, they have scoring depth and play a somewhat physical game. The reason we stayed in this is that we didn’t let up physically and earned our 2 days of rest. Good Work! Lets not let the disallowed goal spoil the mood. A W is a W.

  24. HardHabits says:

Montreal playing like an elite team? Still too early to confirm but at the very least they are giving more of an inclination that they are than they aren’t.

First sixth of the season complete with a record of 6-2-0. Looking forward to gauging the results of the next 8 games.

  25. HabFab says:

    Parros drops Scott…

  26. geo_habsgo says:

Nice to see Montreal is in the mix so early in the season. If they stay competitive like this I’ll be happy no matter what the result. They are standing toe to toe with the best of them and not looking out of place. Hopefully they can keep riding that confidence.

  27. JohnBellyful says:

In his Saturday night rant, Cherry again made reference to the unwritten code and the fact that the great unwashed just don’t get it, “because they’ve never played the game.”
I guess he’s right, how can you expect them — us — to understand how hockey is supposed to be played, if we’ve never been in the trenches.
That’s why the insights and observations of PJ Stock, Garry Galley, Glenn Healey, Mike Milbury, and other NHL alumni are so far superior to what we mere mortals have to offer. They’ve played the game, ergo they’re endowed with great wisdom, far beyond the ken of the average fan.
In fact, I tremble at the thought of commenting on all matters hockey lest these demi-gods should peruse these pages and laugh in scorn at what I’ve posted.

  28. habstrinifan says:

The CBC should really rename itself the ORN..that is, the Ontario Regional Network. They are and have been so Toronto/Ontario biased since whenever that it’s a National disgrace. I’m amazed that the western provinces, the Maritimes and of course Quebec haven’t separated over that alone. We all pay taxes that support that Ontario-centric network yet TO get’s all the play. It even infiltrates the US…more often than not when there is a casual reference to hockey down here, somehow, the Leafs or a Leaf jersey gets displayed. It’s amazing the cultural hegemony that is the ORN, oops…CBC!!! Get the hockey hall of fame out of TO!!! Should be in Montreal anyway. Sorry about the rant..it’s been building up for a while!!!

Ugly win for the boys. We got lucky with the Sens’ goal getting waived off.
