Liveblog: Sabres 3 – Canadiens 2 in OT

PriceBuff

Ott in OT.
The Canadiens were frustrated again in trying to win a sixth straight game.
A heroic third-period comeback featured goals by Max Pacioretty and Colby Armstrong.
But it went for naught when P.K. Subban went for a big hit on the boards and took an ill-advised high-sticking penalty in overtime.

Consensus was the refs blew the call, but what does it matter?
With one second remaining in the Subban penalty, Steve Ott buried the rebound of a Jordan Leopold shot.

Jhonas Enroth was spectacular in nets for Buffalo as the Canadiens outshot the Sabres 26-8 through the last 40 minutes of regulation time. He made 32 saves on the night.

Carey Price was beaten three times on 21 shots.

Buffalo, with the power play, scored on their third shot of  OT.

The Canadiens retain their hold on first place in the Northeast Division as Boston lost 3-1 in Winnipeg.

The Bruins still hold a game in hand but are two points behind the Canadiens.

Way to start TSN…. “how is montreal doing it…” Such confidence

Very weird going into a game on a roll like this. Forsure need a Boone reverse jinx methinks.

Beer Check. I’m still enjoying this Mill Street Organic stuff, whats everyone else got out tonight?

  6. HabinBurlington says:

I love it TInordi’s dad says he can bulk up to 240 and Pierre McGuire says no 230, 240 is pushing it. Okay, so Pierre knows Pops kid better I guess.

  7. kirbhabs says:

Our trade deadline will be Bourque, Prust and Diaz…. Pits malkin.

  8. Willy the bum says:

I keep hearing about trade rumours and stuff. I would see the team be kept as they are instead of getting a player out of desperation, comes April deadline.

They probably have great talents down in Hamilton than snatching up someone from another team; never know if that player can produce as well after a trade-up.

    • donmarco says:

Barring any season ending injuries, I’m with you

    • Danno says:

There’s no need for a desperation move. Things are improving at a nice clip. Keep making smart improvements when the opportunities arise and stay the course.

There’s the notion of team class, as well.

So when Gorges is mentioned as possible trade material, I’m wondering does it diminish the class of the club to trade a guy who still gave EVERYTHING when the team was sucking, and would have to be looking forward to giving everything again only this time in the context of the playoffs?

I mean, if gave everything but was useless, trade him. But Gorges is far from useless (and an alternate captain).

  9. HabinBurlington says:

Pretty neat special TSN just did on Price. Showing all the movements he does make in an average start.

Doubt any scout is here to watch the Habs.

  12. christophor says:

There aren’t any players besides Price and Subban that Armstrong would be interested in watching for Team Canada, or am I missing someone?

Unless he’s also scouting potential opposition.

  13. w.p.d says:

Ok, now that Price has had a solid outing, lets hope that’s what he needed to take it up a notch.

  14. Hobie Hansen says:

Wouldn’t mind seeing that Habs sacrificing a bit of the future at the deadline to add a player for a run.

    • Sean Bonjovi says:

I’d be happy with “Something-Better-Than-Emelin” in exchange for “Emelin-Plus-Enough-to-Make-up-The-Difference”. I like Emelin, but I don’t see any vacant spots to fill. I think that the only improve the roster is to upgrade some of the “OK” parts of the team. I’m not a Kevin Bieksa fan, but if we could add someone like him, or like a young Sheldon Souray I think we’d have a slightly better team.

  15. kirbhabs says:

Am I wrong, but isn’t the 19-5-4 start inflated when you compare to the pre shoot out era… I mean how many shoot outs have we one that has inflated our # 19… just say’n

On Boone’s comment about Mark Tinordi, I heard Mark say that he constantly reminds his son to play as mean and nasty as possible. He went as far as saying he doesn’t think Jared is physical as he should be lol. Music to my ears! Pretty tough dad he’s got there.

  21. Hobie Hansen says:

Watching TSN and they’re talking about the Pens Vs Caps and Crosby Vs Ovechkin. Crazy how Ovechkin is maybe 60% of his former self. The Caps need to trade him and he needs a trade.

  22. AH says:

Prediction: Habs have had a couple of days off, bottom feeder team so….strong first lead 1-0; crap the bed in the second, losing 2-1; strong third, tie it up, win in ot or a shootout 3-2.

    But hey, a win’s a win right?

  23. Adidess says:

Won’t be able to watch much of this one, but hey they don’t really need me this year.

Last year, anything I would do wrong would make them lose: watch early, watch late, watch from beginning to end, not watch at all. Anything…

This year I’ve watched with one eye, two eyes, alone, in groups, HD, no HD, with beer, no beer. And they still win.

Wait, could it be that they’re just good this year?

See you sometime in the third.

    A. The Bell commercial that ends with “Pack your bags, you’ve been traded to Columbus”.
    OR
    B. The VIA Rail commercial with the bonehead who seems himself as the guy who “doesn’t mind showing other teams that his team scored and theirs did not”.

I was sick of these commercials the second time I heard them. They play them OVER and OVER. Talk about crapping on your own brand.

  25. Buzz Lightbeer says:

Off topic. What ever happened to Cunnyworth? Coaching anywhere? Seemed like a nice guy thrown into a crap storm but i can’t help picturing him and JM this year watching Habs together in their bath robes drinking scotch yelling things like “defence!”,”collapse!”,”aaahh what the hell they playing Gally for!”, “Bah”.

  26. Dunboyne Mike says:

Ok, a serious question since Luongo’s been mentioned again.
Why would anyone who saw his uselessness in the Finals against Boston ever consider taking him?

Because he’s from Montreal, I always wanted him to do well. And when he was good he was great. But when he lost it, he was wretched. He will always be a question mark in clutch games.

    • Habilis says:

He was pretty good in the Olympics, most would say that those were clutch games.

I’m not a huge Luongo fan mind you, but I do think he’s still a decent goalie. Better than a few team’s starters (Philly, Toronto, Tampa, Florida, Washington off the top of my head). Maybe he’s not top 10 in the league anymore, but he’s arguably still top 20, IMHO.

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

        Agreed about the Olympics.
But if you were signing the deal, would you want a goalie capable of the kind of collapses that he had vs Boston?
        It’s a pity.

        • The Jackal says:

          Collapsed? The entire team collapsed.
Lou kept them in the all the games they won against Boston.
Blaming him is just part of the misconception that he chokes. The team choked, not him. Goalies get too much of the blame when their team loses.

          • Dunboyne Mike says:

True, Jackal. I agree there was much else happening that wasn’t Luongo’s fault. So I don’t think I’m among those who blame him for losing the Cup. But yeah, I came away from that series thinking he chokes.

(And Loonie may have gone for his dinner, so while he’s not looking I’ll mention that I’d be one of those people who include “conspiracy” in their assessment of that Cup. I believe part of the reason that the Canucks’ offense disappeared was because their best players lost all confidence in the refs’/league’s commitment to player safety via the rules. Exhibit A – Marchand punching Sedin repeatedly in the face, after the whistle, in full view of the ref.)

          • The Jackal says:

Yeah. I just can’t stand when people blame Lou when there was a whole team that choked.

And I like the conspiracy theory too. Does Loonie not?

          • Dunboyne Mike says:

When he comes back from dinner we might find out!

        • Habilis says:

From a Habs point of view, no way under the sun, obviously.

But if I were Nonis, looking ahead to Reimer and Scrivens in net heading down the stretch in a season where my club really needs to make the playoffs? That would scare me. Alot. Maybe even enough to overpay for a goalie. And I’d be more likely to do it for Luongo than for someone less proven like Bernier.

    • Bill says:

Respectfully, I don’t believe that “clutch game” thing. What it means is that a goalie has to win “the big game”, “when it counts” … and by that logic there is no goalie who is “clutch”, because every goalie has lost many, many big games when it counted.

I would add that Luongo was the goalie in a pressure-filled USA-Canada Olympic game and came out victorious. And mainly, I would mention that he had to win more than a few “clutch” games just to get to the SCF.

When it comes to uselessness, what I really noticed was Vancouver’s offence. It was ground to pieces against Boston’s game, and scored a grand total of EIGHT goals in seven games. That’s tough support for any goalie.

      Full Breezer 4 Life

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

Fair enough, Bill. All good points and good defense.
        But would you sign him?

Never thought about “clutch” that way. Thanks. (Reminiscent of Chris questioning the notion of momentum).

So the sentence might be even truer if you just remove “in clutch games”….

Bottom line, for all the good things he has done and achieved, his Boston collapses were, I suggest, spectacular. How could one be confident of him or confident that he can maintain confidence in himself? If I’m a GM, even one looking for a Quebec-born goalie, I pass.

        • The Jackal says:

What do people say about the conspiracy cup theory? Not true or what? I for one think the league made a mockery of the reffing… How could they let Boston get away with so much?

          • Dunboyne Mike says:

I firmly believe the NHL just looks at the viewing numbers for UFC, wants a piece of that action, and understands that modifying/overlooking certain rules will yield the kind of violence/vengeance/vigilantism that guarantees a positive response from certain quarters and therefore generates income.

In short, the NHL doesn’t actually believe in the worth of its own product — professional hockey — which it feels needs to be supplemented with violence. IMO.

        • Bill says:

If I needed a goalie, i would probably sign him, but I don’t think I’d take his present contract. That’s a bad one. As it stands, I’d take Price any day.

      • Cal says:

Say that to Ken Dryden. ;)

    • Rob D says:

Most of the Canucks were no shows in the games in Boston, once they got down. For me, one of the greatest “no guts, no glory” showings in NHL playoff history. I turned a few games off in disgust at the lack of competitive fire the Canucks displayed ..did they really think they were going to win that series just by winning all the games at home? I’ve never liked that team since and Luongo failed to pull them out of it like a truly great goalie should.

      • The Jackal says:

Failed to pull them out like a truly great goalie should…. see, that’s a problematic view about goalies – it’s almost a myth. Are goalies supposed to score goals too? Luongo was not the problem that series. Had the Canucks scored some more goals, maybe we would not have had the aberration cup.

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Because there are many teams with much worse goalies…see To, Phi, Was, TB, etc.

The regular season is more than half over, do we really need to qualify games as “measuring stick” still? Really?

  28. Dunboyne Mike says:

Mr Boone, my homesick heart thanks you for that video.

Yes, I know. If I were still living in Montreal, I would not be enjoying any more snow, it being March. But from over here it sure looks wonderful.

Have emailed the clip to my Irish-born, Irish-resident but Irish-Canadian kids. Remind them who they are (and why their Dad is sillier than usual when it snows).

Hhhrumm. Ahumm. Anyway, about Gally and DD on the same line….

  29. habsfan0 says:

Everybody seems to think if the Leafs trade for a goaltender,it’ll be Roberto Luongo.

But what if the Leafs surprise us and trade for Jaroslav Halak, then the Leafs sneak into the playoffs and face the Habs in the 1st round?

    Price vs Halak.

The hamsters won’t be able to keep up.

  30. Bill H says:

A bit of a “must win – measuring stick” game tonight, wouldn’t you say? In that we often mess up with these bottom feeder teams. ;-)

Aside from the chance to show what they can do in the NHL, players like Blunden and Dumont that get called up for 1 or a few games must really appreciate the bonus cheque they get from playing with the Canadiens. There is a big difference in what they earn per game with the Bulldogs and what they earn per game with the Canadiens. Do they not make about 10 times more? Anyone know how much more they make per game while they are here?

  31. 24 Cups says:

Projected Buffalo Lines – PS: Their line-up looks pretty ho-hum to me.

    Ott – Hodgson – Pominville
    Vanek – Ennis – Leino
    Foligno – Porter – Flynn
    Kaleta – Hecht – Stafford

    Ehrhoff – Leopold
    Regehr – Myers
    Weber – Pysyk

    Goal: Jhonas Enroth

    Scratches/Injuries: Gerbe, Scott, Sekera, Sulzer

  32. piper says:

Is that Milbury doing the commentary on the Kostitsyn screwup? Surprised that he didn’t rip Kostitsyn on the play. He probably didn’t even notice it.

    • byrneoNL says:

I don’t like the Gallagher-DD-Pacioretty line combo. Love Gally, but you can’t have two guys shorter than my girlfriend on the same line. Not in the NHL, not for long. Yes Gally’s got the heart of a lion, and he fights harder than anyone – but he’s still only a buck 70. He may often defy the odds and get to loose puck – but he’s too easy to seperate from pucks and ice. Mass is still mass and it still counts in battles. Especially when the league catches on that you are a threat. He’ll lose as many battles in corners and in trying to get to loose pucks (or more) than he wins. Starting to see it lately. People have caught on that he needs to be covered. Two squirts on the same line may actually be bad in the long run.

My first thought is to have Ryder on that line eventually, and our rookie secret weapons reunited with Prust when he gets back. But it doesn’t have to be. We could put Clowe out with them, for example

  36. byrneoNL says:

I’ve always prided myself on being able to admit when I’m wrong. It happens so often it might even be the thing I’m most proud of (har har). I was not drinking the MT kool aid at the beginning of this season. I was firmly entrenched in Camp Timo. But what can I say, I’m a believer. And have been since our “bounce back” Florida swing. I don’t mean to jinxe us, tho we’ll probably lose tonight, cause we like losing to crappy seems – 4 of our losses came vs Toronto and the Isles. But more importantly than having *my* respect, MT has the players respect. And the players have each other’s respect. So hopefully we don’t lay an egg tonight. I’d like to see Galchenyuk pop one or two. He’s been playing the system, playing withing the system, and putting defense ahead of offense. Hopefully he gets rewarded tonight.

  37. Storman says:

Hey Booner you might want to double check stats when quoting antichambre in your live blog preview, in the preview article you said the following
    • The Canadiens’ 19-5-4 start is their best since 1972-’73, when the team was 17-4-7 … and won the Stanley Cup. BUT you must remeber 76-77………….

Instantly i knew this had to be a mistake remembering the best team of all time the 1976-77 Habs, that Canadiens team started 23-4-4 on their way to an astounding record of 60-8-12.

    • Ian Cobb says:

I remember that year of only losing 8 games all season. Unbelievable.

I was in Elementary in 76 lost only 8 games incredible and remember having my head on my desk dropping hockey cards on the floor playing need’em gott’em, making trades actually playing with your hockey cards, bringing them with you everywhere, and running home for Hockey night in Canada after playing all day at the outdoor rink. One thing I remember about that team was just expecting it to win every game…

It makes me wonder that l’antichambre cant even get that one straight. How did the team do during those years?
    Hmmm interesting…

    • Psycho29 says:

I was just reading an old Gazette….February 19, 1972…..At the Forum, Habs beat the Flyers before only 8,066 fans in a massive snowstorm.

Ken Dryden and his wife walked from NDG, but his glasses kept fogging up.
Jacques Lemaire and Yvan Cournoyer rode to the game on Lemaire’s snowmobile from Beaconsfield.
Denis DeJordy and Guy Lapointe got a ride with a tow truck from Beloeil.
Broadcaster Gilles Tremblay hitched a ride on a snow plow…four hours from Repentigny!
Meanwhile the Flyers exited their train at the wrong station and had to carry their own equipment bags! Jean Guy Gendron was visiting his family six miles from Montreal, took a snowmobile to the Forum but got there too late to dress….

I wonder if today’s players would make that kind of effort to make a game in time?

There’s enough sites for the riffraff Leafs fans to go pound on.

    • H.Upmann says:

Apparently Fried man is a habs fan… Plus HIO is awesome, what with the play by play and live blog.

    • ffenliv says:

Friedman is, in my opinion, the best guy there.

Also, they changed it from ‘Habs’ to ‘Hockey’ after legal threat from the Canadiens organization.

    • NTTIAWWT says:

Thanks guys. Not saying the new H I/O isn’t as good, if not better. Just don’t need to be reminded of anything that reeks of Leafs bias (linking to blue and white fanboys like Mirtle, Cox et al.) and I doubt very much Friedman is in any way a Habs fan. He goes out of his way to prop the Leafs and rarely, if ever mentions or has any insight into the Habs. he’s a CBC Leafs shill.

    • Vid says:

The Canadiens made the Gazette remove the “Habs” due to trademark or some other nonsense. Silly but not as bad as the NHL asking a basha owner to pay $89000 because he had a picture of a chef sporting the habs logo while cutting schwarma.

    • Lafleurguy says:

Timmins found Halak, but not really, ’cause he was an afterthought being chosen in the ninth round just like Luc Robitaille. Just looked up the Flyers’ goalie prospects, ’cause that team has been searching for a goalie forever, and they used a 2nd round pick last year on a prospect. Malcolm Subban, Carey, MA Fleury, Pekka Rinne, Luongo were goalies picked in the first round. That article advising a goalie draft has an error; the Habs are more likely to be drafting near 30th than the top third.

    • Cal says:

Why the hell does he say the Habs should waste a 1st round pick on a goalie? Knob city.
Good to great ones are found in later rounds as well.

    • HabinBurlington says:

Disagree with his sage like advice to use a first round pick on a goalie. The Habs I am sure in the next year or two will draft a goalie, but to spend a 1st round pick at this juncture seems a bit much, unless the best goalie of the draft falls to their position and he is the best player available. I think only one goalie is ranked in the top30, so perhaps if he is available it should be considered. But to stretch the 1st round pick down to a 40th ranked player seems crazy.

We have 3 2nd round picks, perhaps one of those could be used on a goalie.

    • The Dude says:

Total bullspit and made for the paranoid….I have never seen so many young great Goalies floating around the Nhl and Ahl thus the Devils and Lamorello “who knows his poop” are in great shape. And as far as Brodeur goes ,he’s got another 4 years in him easy. Oh by the way, this is why we overpaid for Carey Price …scare tactics from the PriceBots!

    • Bripro says:

In 4 years, Price will be 29. Panic time? I don’t think so.
When they chose Carey in the first round, everyone held their breath because, as Burly pointed out, there are few exceptions to drafting a goalie in the first round.
As as the dude pointed out, with the overstock of goaltenders and so many who will be UFAs between now and the team’s need, using a 1st round draft pick would be totally illogical, and not something we can accuse Marc Bergevin of.

    • Bash says:

It’s always about the best player available regardless of position but I agree we don’t need to specifically target a goalie over and above any other player.

The 2 Gallys and Eller. Gionta or Ryder with DD and Moen with Pleks until Bourque or Prust get back.

Send Armstrong out for a walk with Lenny and George.

If Bourque can’t go soon, call Russia and tell TITS (yes AK 46!) that Markov and Emelin are back and want him to play.

      • derfab says:

Gallagher is getting killed by top checkers. He has been good with Galchenyuk. Playing with Eller will give him more room and lengthen his career. Kostitsyn is signed in the KHL but the Habs allowed he and his kid brother (2 of the best prospects we’ve had since the last century/cup) to become the whipping boys some so tragically seem to require and long for. I think he would look pretty good filling in on a few contending teams right now, including the Bruins.

  67. bwoar says:

    @Loonie re Bogosian:

I keep hearing “reportedly unhappy” in connection to Jets players (Kane was one, now Bogo) but never WHO reports this stuff. I live here and we just don’t see it. And trust me, the crab bucket reporters here love to milk any possible angle. (Again, see Kane, Evander.) If the guy was unhappy we’d be reading about it (rather, ignoring the papers blabbing about it) every day.

Having watched Enstrom, Byfuglien and Bogosian plenty, it’s Bogosian who is the ‘rock’ on D for the Jets. Big Buff is a hand grenade; dangerous to both teams some nights. He gets TONS of PP time, deservedly so, and still manages to play the most ES minutes. Very little PK though. And although Enstrom’s defensive game isn’t terrible, he’s limited by his size. Bogosian is the go-to guy to eat the toughest minutes of the game & most reliable one the whole, i.e. in all three zones.

Remember that Bogosian is just 22 and Byfuglien is 27, and you can see where this is going.

I agree they’ll have to give something up to get scoring, but moving any of those 3 players is extremely unlikely. Hence them being very unlikely to budge for Bourque + Kristo + a 2nd rounder.

Try Tinordi, Gallagher + 2nd and I think you’d be closer to what the Jets might ask for starters. I don’t see a fit for either team making that trade whatsoever.

    “thoroughbred”

    • Loonie says:

If there’s no fit there’s no fit. And while I like Bogosian a lot of that is untapped potential.

He isn’t close to where he can be and if the Jets would want what you’re saying their ask would be I’m not interested.

They certainly don’t have to give him away but they won’t get a huge haul for him either.

    • HabsWinn-ipeg says:

Agreed bwoar. We never hear anything about Kane/Bogo/Buff being unhappy. The only way the Jets move any of them would be a)if they demanded to be traded and were causing friction in the dressing room, or b)someone offered the Jets greater value, and those 3 guys are plenty valuable to the Jets. I like Kane, but he’s bit of a headcase. Same goes for Buff. Bogo’s a stud – would love to have him.

  68. Loonie says:

Not a cool reference Mr. Boone.

  69. jols101 says:

Armstrong with Eller and Galchenyuk. I like it. But if Galchenyuk doesn’t get a hatty and 2 helpers he should go straight to the press box and he shouldn’t receive $200 for passing Go.

  70. mike3131 says:

    Random thought re. Galchenyuk:
This might have been mentioned, but If Gally is ready to play centre while Davey is still in town, how about DD moves to the wing… on a line with Eller and Patch? Keep the DD-Patch combo together while Eller gets top minutes at C. Then A Gally can pivot the 3rd line with B Gally and perhaps Bourque. All top 3 lines would get about 15 mins each per game. What do you think?

    • BJ says:

Wouldn’t mind seeing that either. No need to trade away anyone of our centers. Depth is what is keeping us afloat with the recent injuries, remember last season when we had to plug up hole by giving up draft choices. If MB plays his cards well (which I think he will) we could end up in a position of strength as the Bruins have on trades over the last years and get that much better.

  71. otter649 says:

Armstrong playing with #81 & #27 – How long will that last & can Armstrong keep up with the pace of those two…..

    • HabinBurlington says:

He rode shotgun with Crosby in Pittsburgh, but I doubt still the same speed. Having said that, he is a smarter player I think than many give him credit for. I don’t mind that combination in the least, plus ArmDog is Hot right now!!!!

    • Steeltown Hab says:

Not long man. I like that they’re checking out Dumont at C though. I reco’d him as the 4LC at the start of the year, I think White will be stronger on the W as well.
