Liveblog: Canadiens beat Rangers 3-0

PriceRangers

Not bad for a new line.
Erik Cole, Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller beat Martin Biron to give your Montreal Canadiens their second win over the Rangers this week.
They were the Three Stars of the game, with Chucky a popular Number 1.
Carey Price made 17 saves for his second shutout of the season.
The Canadiens had 18 shots.

I have no idea what year you were born, but I am a 3 rd generation Habs fan. My father was born in the mid 30′s and witnessed the rivalries of the 40′s, 50′s and even the 60′s of the Habs against the Leafs. It was a time when the 2 teams had a real rivalry about who was best and they actually traded some Cups. It is a rivalry in my opinion passed on from generation to generation when the Habs and Leafs were both actually winning championships, obviously before we left them in our dust. New Habs fans, or even fans who didn’t have their parents etc…ramming the rivalry down their throat, would never understand the passion of it. I was born in 65 and I honestly hate the Bruins a lot more than the Leafs now because they have become our real rival over the last 30 or 40 years IMO . The absolute hate for the Leafs is a tradition passed down IMO

    • Peter Young says:

Montreal Canadiens vs. Toronto Maple Leafs was (and to some extent is) a natural rivalry; i.e., each team is the natural rival of the other. The teams come from Canada’s two biggest cities, themselves rivals for economic supremacy for a long time, and its two most populous provinces, Quebec vs. Ontario, they are the NHL’s two oldest teams and were for some 40 years Canada’s only two NHL teams, one team was viewed as carrying the banner of the French-speaking population, the other the banner of the English-speaking population, until recently the teams’ respective player compositions reflected those two constituent populations, and, for a long time, both teams were very strong, the Leafs assembling two dynasty teams and the Canadiens three.

But Ken Dryden declared in his wonderful book The Game, about the 1979-80 Canadiens, that the rivalry was already dead by the late 1970s. The Leafs killed it, he said, with poor administration. At the time he writes of, 1979-80, only 13 years had passed since the Leafs had last won the Stanley Cup, and that season was, of course, the last of the Canadiens’ last dynasty. Now the Leafs have not won the Cup in going on 46 years (45 seasons, taking account of the lockout year), and the Canadiens have won the Cup only twice in going on 34 years (33 seasons) and not at all for going on 20 years (19 seasons). The rivalry no longer has the same competitive edge.

It is tradition that keeps the rivalry alive when it no longer realistically exists in terms of on-ice competition–during periods when one team is much stronger than the other and in times when both teams are weak. Still, now the two teams have been reduced to also-rans, there is a competitive element to the rivalry, just at a much lower level than in the hey-days of the 1930s through the 1960s. The rivalry may have no significance outside the rivalry itself, but it nevertheless continues to exist.

The Canadiens have had other great rivalries over the years. The Red Wings were the main competitive rival of the 1950s. The Bruins have been considered a top rival since the 1970s. But the Leafs will always be considered a leading rival, if only because of tradition.

Crazy NHL stat of the night:

Boston is only 3 points up on Philly in the East tonight. Boston has 2 regulation losses, Philly has 10. Of course, this is all because the Flyers have played SIX more games than the Bruins. I know one is from the snowstorm postponement, but that’s still bonkers in a 48 game season.

    Any suspension better be offsetting.

SO does Torts think that was a boring game or a badly played game on both sides :P I sure as heck enjoyed it!

Could someone explain to me at what point in the game the MaxP on McD hit occurred that everyone is talking about. I obviously missed it And thought I paid close attention to the game, even rewinding while PVR’ing.

    Some happy statistics:

Since the Toronto drubbing, we’re batting 0.929: we have 13 of 14 points.

First in the East, and currently second in the league (at least until Anaheim plays).

Tied for fourth in the league for goal differential.

Only four teams have fewer regulation losses than we do, and of those, all have played fewer games. Two of them have played at least 3 fewer games.

Still a long season ahead, but man, this is a pretty good start.

  10. HAB - Have A Beer says:

It won’t be a measuring stick that will beat us monday. If we get beat. It will be their Goalie stick.

I think they are a little better on the back end than we are. but, that don’t mean we can’t beat them …. Just MO.

  11. The Chicoutimi Cucumber says:

Despite a promising start by Sha-Na-Na, we’ve again degenerated into a situation where the NHL’s policy on suspensions is so incoherent that nobody knows what’s suspendable and what’s not. The draft lottery is less random.

I don’t care if Patches gets suspended or not, frankly, provided it’s a short suspension (and if it isn’t, then the system is even more messed up than it appears to be, given what other players have gotten away with, including, of course, Chara’s unconscionable attempted manslaughter). Winning teams don’t let a guy like McDo go unpunished for the unpenalized crap he was pulling. (Now if he’d been penalized for scraping Prust’s face along the boards, that might be another story). The really crucial part of that whole play, incidentally, was killing off the penalty that followed the hit. Now that’s how it’s done: wipe the guy out, then kill the penalty. Message delivered – this ain’t Team Smurf any more.

    • Say Ash says:

They seem to punish based on damage sustained, no?

      • The Chicoutimi Cucumber says:

Injury is definitely a factor. Much worse, so is ‘intent,’ the biggest pile of B.S. of a category imaginable. It basically allows them to suspend guys they don’t like while excusing guys they do (such as Chara).

The policy should be this simple: no hits to the head. Period. That’d end a lot of this crap really quick. As it is, it’s the wild west, and I have no problem with the Habs playing the same game as everybody else. We’re suckers if we don’t.

    • HardHabits says:

      I couldn’t agree more.

    • Da Hema says:

I absolutely loved Pacioretty’s hit on McDonough. The latter had it coming to him. That the Habs killed off the penalty was just icing on the cake. What Pacioretty did reminded me of the Habs pre-1995. Chelios, McPhee, Nilan — someone, anyone, even Naslund — would seriously hurt someone who screwed with us. Good for you Max!

      • The Chicoutimi Cucumber says:

My God, those teams had serious sandpaper. Corson, Chelios, Nilan, Kordic, Momesso, Ludwig, Lemieux, Lalor, McPhee, Skrudland, Carbo – I’m probably forgetting a few – quite a combo of heavy-duty bastards and nasty cheap-shot artists and agitators. They must have been an absolute nightmare to play against!

  12. HardHabits says:

I also want to say I love the Habs new 2nd line… just kidding, but if this your 3rd line holy crap!!!

    Cole 6’2 205
    Galchenyuk 6’1 200
    Eller 6’2 200

Eller was ornery tonight. I was worried that he would drift morosely after Therrien slammed him, but instead he seems to have begun honestly working on not being such a passenger. If he starts to add some physicality to his game, that’d be an unexpected bonus.

As long as the rookies keep doing their thing, we don’t have a first, second, or third line – we have three lines that can score, and then a classic ‘energy’ line.

      • HardHabits says:

I think Plekanec’ line gets the 1st line tag based on minutes played. He’s averaging 20 a game whereas Galchenyuk is averaging like 12. DD is at around 16.

What is great is having not just secondary scoring for a change but also tertiary scoring and of course a classic energy 4th line… defensively responsible, crash and bang, and capable of potting a few in here and there. No more Palushaj or Weber on the 4th.

        • The Chicoutimi Cucumber says:

Of all the follies of the Goat, none drove me battier than his baffling policy of treating the fourth line like an afterthought. Every year we’d spent three months scrambling to paper over the holes. I was very pleased to see MB FINALLY solidifying our bottom-six. And it’s made a difference, being one of the reasons for our strong start.

        • savethepuck says:

I think Plex line is getting a lot more minutes also because a lot of times, he’s matched up against the other teams top line. Amazing the offensive #’s he’s getting while he’s supposed to be shutting down other team’s top lines.

Tell you what kinda fan I am. I am already worried about the Wednesday game against Toronto… in Toronto too.

If we play our game I dont see Ottawa beating us… but if we try any trapping or too careful play MaClean will beat us… he is just that good a coach. But if we come out and go at them it should be a victory.

The Leafs will be orbery… and they gonna have a dry run against Philly.

    • savethepuck says:

As I’ve told all my relatives, Laffs and Habs fans, I could care less if we lost every game to the Laffs this year, as long as we keep following up those losses with 5 or 6 game winning streaks. Keeps the Laffs fans happy because that’s what they live for, to beat the Habs. Being the longest running NHL team without a Stanley Cup and also without a playoff birth ( pre lockout ), they can have their satisfaction by beating us once in a while because our goals are much higher than just beating the Laffs.
This is coming from a guy who was brought up to absolutely detest the Laffs and grew to absolutely hate the Bruins all on his own.

Didn’t get to see a lot of the game, but it’s nice to see Eller on the score sheet. Hopefully this will help boost his confidence and help him take his game to the next level.

So is Eller a solid part of the team’s future now? I say YES.

  16. The Jackal says:

@Solomio – what are you on about, did you raid Boone’s stash and Front’s liquor cabinet? We beat the rags twice this week, the first time at their rink they had Zotto and the King, every team has some players missing, doesnt take away from a win. We will beat the Laffs and Booins.

  18. krob1000 says:

ok so Gallagher who has been fanatastic…and has 8 points in 14 games….is ..get this..11th in team scoring!!! how is that for scoring by committee…..this team has some serious depth

  19. HardHabits says:

McDonagh was taking runs at everybody. He crunched Pacioretty along the boards pretty hard too. He was making himself into a one man wrecking crew even sticking his glove in Prust’s eye dislodging his contact lens. CBC was going on about how McDonagh was hitting everything in his path. Then came Pacioretty’s hit which got him only a 2 minute penalty. No 5 minutes. No game misconduct.

Torts it torting out his arse.

What kills me is seeing the Habs going out there and not just playing good hockey but also taking it to the other team, not backing down, not being slapped around or made somebody’s bitch, like we’ve seen not so long ago.

They’ll follow the same protocol that was followed on the Gallagher hit.

He also hit a crouched down Prust directly on the head into the boards. I really didn’t think either hit of Mcd’s was that bad but they were both worse than Patches. None of the hits should be reviewable as they were all hockey plays and just NHL hockey IMO. The worst play of the game was Bickell’s cross check to an unsuspecting players face…that was the only real dirty play in that game
