A ridiculous 10-3 game in Philadelphia featured seven power-play goals – four by the Penguins, who chased Ilya Bryzgalov and scored five unanswered goals in the second period to take control of Game 4.
The Penguins avoid an ignominious sweep and head home for Game 5 on Friday.
In Ottawa, a 2-2 goaltender’s duel between Henrik Lundqvist and Craig Anderson ended with Kyle Turris’s spectacular wrister 2:42 into overtime.
Line of the Night from habsfanO: Flyers played tonight like this Dick Clark thing really upset them

Officiating in the NHL is atrocious, it is really really terrible, and it changes on a game to game basis, like Betteman sends down word how he wants the games offciated.

If the NHL was serious about stopping the violence, they would outlaw fighting, or at least suspend players for 20 games, and then a year if it happens again.
How many fist fights were there in the violent NFL last year? Zero? That’s because players know they’ll be gone, no questions asked.
These 1-5 game suspensions are just laughable.
What’s to stop a team from suiting up 4-5 goons, and attacking the other team’s best players? A 2 minute or 5 minute penalty? Who cares?
After this playoff debacle, I guarantee every NHL will be looking for even more thugs and brawlers for 2013.
Once fighting is eventually outlawed, and it will be, this era of the NHL will go down as a spectacular failure of the commissioner, and a total embarrassment.
With Vancouver looking like they’re out, we can’t get an all-Canadian final which would have messed up Bettman. What’s the worst possible final left from a ratings POV? Ottawa – Phoenix?
—————-
Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.
Nashville-Phoenix would be hilarious.
Kate Smith – what a babe.
Boudreau on CBC panel was best ever he called out Stock for stupidity more than was required to confirm exactly that!
Chris F***ing Lee, the NHL is an embarassing comedy, just a big old school boys club, Clarence Campbell might as well be running things. Bettman is a disgrace. Pure and simple.
In this day and age, where everything is about the almighty dollar, you wake up each day hoping some things can change. Hoping that some very intelligent people can take over from cavemen like Shanahan, and the rest of the NHL’s front office.
I love listening to Bob McCowen. If you haven’t tuned in you should. He’s the only guy in Toronto, and I mean the only guy who will call out Brian Burke for the failure he is, and in the same sentence mock the disgrace that is Gary the puke Bettman. I don’t care how “smart” some people think he is. He’s just another sell out, plain and simple. And it’s all too clear now–if last years incident with Patches-Horton (although he got his in the end) – Ference — Rat Boy Marchand—etc, etc, etc, it’s all too clear the league gives a rat’s ass about it’s players, first liners or fourth liners.
But it is clear, that if you do target someone’s head, make it a fourth liner, given that penalty will garner 2 games, it you take a first liners head off with your elbow, your getting 4.
Shanahan, your a disgrace, Bettman, your a disgrace.
It’s pathetic, and it’s all for the shameless ratings in the almighty USA. Most fans south of the border are dumber than sand, and when it comes to hockey, they could give a rats ass who wins as long as their team beats up the other. And then here comes the chant: U S A, U S A!! What a joke, what a disgrace.
Out Habs are too small, what chance will we have if the Patches incident happens again to more of our top players?
Anyway, like Bob says, the league is a sham, the entire suspension system is a sham. If you want targeting the head out of the game, suspend someone for 40 games.
Can’t we agree to hate Bettman and Shanahan without the anti-american vitriol?
I can agree with that

Brawls are allowed as long as they are scheduled before the game and the players are in various stages of undress.

I think the pre game brawl was against Philly in 87 and no penalties assessed because no refs and the players were mostly out of uniform, including some players fighting on ice with no skates, that was hilarious.

So I am reading through the posts surrounding the discussions on the violence in the game. Lots of ideas.
One idea, I humbly put to you, as very brilliant and 100% sure to to effect a complete change of attitude by the players and coaches.
Chicohab posted that there should be a ‘penalty shot’ immediately awarded to the other team when an opposing player is called for a headshot.
Before you gasp and say no way.. let’s think about it and put yourself on the ice in skates in a game situation.
There can be supplemental and after the fact penalties handed out like suspensions etc which take into account all the troublesome aspects such as intent, or injury caused, or repeat offender status. All these are OUT of the hands of the on ice referee.
But…
The league draws up a very detailed and well explained set of criteria which would categorize a head shot.
The on ice referees are empowered to hand out a non-reviewable and immediate verdict ..head shot = penalty shot. You can tweak the punishment (still award power play or not) but the inescapable fact is …you commit a head shot (better phrasing is “the referee calls a head shot against you”) your team gets a penalty shot against them… immediately.
Players would change their patterns very quickly for a head shot becomes a very impactful penalty which your team cannot strategise against. A good PP wont mitigate the setback you, as a player, will be putting ‘on’ the team. Sure a great goalie may help… but still there is no way to prepare for it.
It would also be something to add spice to the game.
The referess will be under immense pressure for the first season. BUT THEY AND ALL THE PLAYERS will eventually get it.
You can bet that every player would be conscious of not getting a penalty shot called against their team.
And once players shy away from head shots by re-acquiring good shoulder, hip, etc checking skills then you would not have taken away anything from their arsenal of tough tools to play the game and you would have solved the biggest problem going.
Great idea ChicoHAB!!!!!!!!!
Sorry no way, how many times do we need to view certain hits just to determine if it was really a direct head shot.
With the leagues refs at an all time low in quality, we can not give them this subjective view and directly give them so much discretion in determining the outcome of a game
NO WAY

I like the out of box thinking. Someone twerted that if a player gets suspended for “intent to injure” the team is not allowed to dress a replacement for the duration of the suspension. I kind of liked that. Of course the Bruins would be the only team in the league playing with a full roster.
———————————–
Please feel free to call me Jim.
I don’t think that would be a deterrent. They had no sooner come in with the hitting from behind than players began turning their backs to oncoming players. Concussions would soar as players sought to draw a penalty shot in the senario you propose. I think the biggest problem is too many rules, too much regulation by bystanders. Let the men sort it out.
Gentlemen who haven’t been given public consideration for the GM job who I’d like to see interviewed and given serious consideration.

Well Mike Gillis must have a willing suitor for Roberto Luongo and I have a guess as to who it is.
I think that in the summer we’ll be seeing Rick Nash and Steve Mason heading to Vancouver and Roberto Luongo, Keith Ballard and/or picks heading to Columbus.
I see it more as protecting Luongo who hasn’t played badly but if Vancouver loses tonight (and they most likely will) in another close one and GreasyLu was the goalie, the darts from all across B.C. would be on him forever.
If Schneider loses, it’s no big whoop.

What is there to protect Luongo from at this point? It’s the playoffs and an elimination game.
Is your opinion that if Luongo plays and they lose it will be all his fault and he may never recover mentally from the ensuing blame from fans and media?
I think that’s a little far fetched for a multi-million dollar goalie. Much more likely that he’s done in Vancouver.

Absolutely nothing and you’re right.

Why cry baby Crosby? That reeks of a grudge. There’s tons of players who act far worse, but people single Crosby out because he is who he is. Should he act like that? No. But he is 24, he’s a kid and he’ll learn. And he’ll only get better as a player too. I think these attacks on Crosby are just to take away from his skill and try to paint him as some kind of goon.
I’m with Crosby. To hell with the Flyers. Bunch of jerks and cherry-pickers. Any team that has Briere on it… I just can’t root for. Turncoat refused a contract with the habs. Meanwhile, Crosby has actively mentioned his desire to play here one day.
Crosby said he cheered for the Habs, but I’ve never heard him say he wants to play for them now.
Until he has a CH on his chest, I care not.
Why was Brière under any obligation to sign with the Habs? He’s not even from Quebec. He said he liked the direction the Flyers were taking; and, judging by results, he made the right choice.
Stop with the logic will ya JF. None of that here!

I dont understand why Crosby is called a cry-baby especially in this series. He has done everything. People criticise if he plays tough.. gets involved..and if he were to play a perimeter game they would criticise him even more. His rant that ” I dont like anyone on the Flyers” was what he felt right now… he was not whining.
Pittsburgh are losing their composure… along with Sid and the other stars. But he is not a cry-baby in this series.
Claude Julien doesn’t like that Dale Hunter pointed to the Bruins head hunting the Capitals and the statement the Capitals themselves released questioning the NHL’s decision to suspend Backstrom yet ignore the Bruins’ multiple, questionable head hits.
Yeah, I suppose if one of the dirtiest players in NHL history found my players like Milan Lucic, Gregory Campbell, Shawn Thornton, Andrew Ference, Brad Marchand and Dan Paille to be dirty players who were head hunting I’d be a little pissed off too.
Memo to Julien : Embrace the FACT that a great number of your players are dirty, gutless and in some cases sociopathic. If you don’t like being accused of playing dirty, tell your players not to play dirty. If you don’t have a problem with it or encourage it, just shut up and coach your team.

Nathan MacKinnon has really opened my eyes to the differences between a player like Grigorenko and himself. I’ll still be happy if we draft Grigorenko, but man, Halifax doesn’t have that strong a team and look at the points he’s putting up in the playoffs. I’m drooling over here and ramping up to start the TANK 2013 movement…
No Grigorenko Please I watched him play the entire Halifax Quebec series and he was awful (maybe playing hurt though), Here is hoping we select Alex Galchenyuk and then I hope the Habs select local Pointe Claire prospect Mike Matheson with our second round pick #33 overall
In the Q playoffs Grigorenko 11 playoff games 3 goals 7 assists and a minus 1
MacKinnon 11 playoff games 11 goals 21 points and a plus 11
Jonathon Drouin former Lac St Louis Lion 8 goals 9 assists and A plus 5 and scored the game winner in overtime in Game 7 at the colisee.
The Lac st Louis Lion team that won bronze at the Telus Cup last year was stacked with local talent. 4 former Lac St Louis Lions from that team listed below
1-Mike Matheson Dubuque Fighting Saints, Playing in USHL playoffs Dubuque just defeated Team USA development team in round one, with Matheson scoring a beauty shorthanded last night, they now take on Indiana. Matheson is a projected first round or early second pick in this years NHL draft.
Sidebar-also on Dubuque is a talented big center named Zemgus Girgensons another projected top 1st round pick
2-Ryan Culkin Quebec Remparts eliminated last night by Halifax projected late second or early third this years NHL draft
3-Jonathon Drouin Halifax Mooseheads moving on having a great playoffs and a possible first rounder 2013
4-Anthony Duclair Quebec Remparts eliminated last night also a projected first rounder in 2013
Just a sidebar on Ryan Culkin, he got cut from MidgettAAA Lions, went down to AA got called up on multiple occasions, then played all playoff games with Lac st Louis culminating in last years bronze medal at Nationals. He then makes the Remparts as an 8th dman and keeps working and now is a projected third round pick in this years NHL draft, good on ya Ryan Culkin

Hmm. I think Grigorenko is a great player. It takes the bigger guys longer to develop. I also think that while he might not be a “franchise” player, He can still be a number 1 center. 85pts this season is comparable with a lot of number 1 centers in the league. If he plays in junior next year he’ll break 100pts in the regular season and maybe perform better in the playoffs.
I’d like to find stats on players injured in their draft years and how they performed over their careers. My thinking is if his body can’t stand up to the rigors of junior, he’ll be perennially injured as an NHL’er.
Btw, can anyone imagine Boone in white tennis shorts?
Well, he certainly knows how to show some leg in a tux,
once he’s left his barber’s on an acid trip!
Seriously, isn’t that him there!
Now Timo, why would anybody use a perfectly fine imagination on Mr. Boone’s legs? Shania Twain would be better use of the imagination, no? After all, one probably only has a limited number of imagination bullets in your lifetime and you shouldn’t waste any.
Pretty sure my Father told me that once when I was 12. Something about losing my eye sight too.
…and bladder control. I remember that speech.
And don’t get me started on…never mind.
Does anyone know if Daniel Pribyl can play for the Bulldogs next season?
Daniel Pribyl would be eligible for the AHL and or Hamilton Bulldogs immediately being a European player.

Does that apply to any age level?
Avtsin came over as an 19-year old and went straight to Ham. Don’t know if he was drafted by any junior team though.
I think the eligibility rules are the CBA but I don’t feel like looking right now.
Guaranteed that tonight’s Philly game will be as exciting as watching Habs on monday night play say Florida Panthers. It will be a snooze fest.
Who won the Cup last year? How did they play again? By allowing the Bruins to get away with their style of play last year – the league sent a clear message – as per usual, teams try to replicate what worked the previous year….we are witnessing it first hand in these playoffs.
It could very well work out to be not as insane as the last game was, it wouldn’t shock me if an actual hockey game is gonna be played.

Whether you are a Don Cherry admirer or a Don Cherry hater, it can not be honestly denied that he is an absolute master of his medium.
The physical aspect of playoff hockey only gives the vapours to “…sissy sportswriters in white tennis shorts”.
Brings to mind a line from C.S. Forester (in The General), “it was a statement so true that she had to deny it.”

If he wants to look at muscular young men doing violence to one another he really should stick to gay porn.

That said, you are proving my point here: Don Cherry has a deceptively complex schtick–he simply is a master of the medium: for good or for ill, according as one positions oneself.
