Liveblog: Penguins 7 – Canadiens 6 in OT

P.K.Pitt

For providing that much entertainment, both teams deserved two points.
This was like the Thrilla in Manilla.
Six goals in the second period, four in the third.
And one 52 seconds into Overtime, by Brandon Sutter, who had a wide-open look to Carey Price’s glove side.
Great game.

Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe had the best tweet: “NHL moved its All-Star Game to Montreal tonight?”

Canadiens outshot the visitors 39-36 and battled back from deficits of 4-2 and 6-5.

Statistical oddity: Only one power-play goal, Sutter in the first period.

The seven goals  on Price equal what he allowed in his previous four games.

The Canadiens have at laest a point in 10 straight games – first such streak since Feb. 23-March19, 1994.

Will they have anything left in Boston?

Last time 13 goals were scored at the Bell Centre: Oct. 21, 2006, Canadiens 8 – Colorado 5

The Habs will eventually get a tougher guy since Prusty can’t do it all…Look for the Habs to express interest in George Parros…This guy can play hockey and fight. They are still interested in another d-man to clear the net.

According to the Ottawa Sun, Bergevin is still interested in clearing more salary so probable candidates are Kaberle (zero trade value), Weber, Eller (who many general managers have called about).

The most I have ever seen in a photo was $2,000 but understand it ranges from $200-1,000 normally.
On the other hand, didn’t a coach get in trouble with the league over putting money on the board a couple seasons back?

Nokes is a very good 13th forward if the injury bug hits.

I’d rather see Nokes. I don’t want 4 forwards who are 5’8 and under on the same club.

Maybe if we didn’t already have Desharnais, Gionta, Gallagher in the lineup… but there is a limit to this before it starts to hurt you.

    Et Le But

  24. mb says:

I see this has been brought up in the comments below, and I have to agree 100% with Habfan10912, re. the Zolnierczyk hit on Lundin. I think it is sad that despite all the talks regarding headshots and dangerous plays, many (too many) players still don’t get it. What I find even more revolting, is that today’s players actually are aware of the repercussions of these hits, such as concussions, brain injuries, etc. A while ago, one could argue that they didn’t understand the seriousness of these types of injuries, but nowadays, I think it’s safe to say that players who still don’t care to change their game are just plain ignorant.

As for the coaches and owners, I can’t read their minds, but it seems like a lot are still considering concussions and brain injuries as simple headaches. It is mind boggling to me. (I mean, just the name of it, “brain injuries”, should be enough to understand that players’ safety is more important than a win).

I realize that it’s a fast game; incidents are going to happen, and hitting will always be a part of hockey (which is fine with me, physical games and clean checks have always occured), but as I wrote, the players know better than they used to when it comes to various head injuries… So to me, there’s no excuse to ignore the seriousness of it all, anymore.

Sadly, I think it’s going to take a serious incident before the league actually does something to get rid of that issue (and it could). Because I, for one, do not believe that giving a one, or two, or five-game suspension is enough to stop some recidivist players. Let’s just face a simple fact, there have already been (nearly) career-ending injuries, serious concussion cases, broken vertebraes… But it seems like it’s not enough to be really willing to make a change. I hope I’m wrong, though.

Sorry about the rant and long post, but I hate to see this great sport getting uglier and uglier (or maybe I’m just noticing these kinds of plays more than I used to)!

(Re-Bonjour, everyone, by the way. I haven’t posted for a long while, but have kept reading this site and its comments, as well as watching my Habs! Looking forward to two big back-to-back games!! Go Habs.)

While I think that Sidney Crosby is the best player in the world, I don’t think it is by the country mile that many seem to suggest.

Pavel Datsyuk has to at least be in the conversation given his defensive prowess.

    • habsfan0 says:

And how far has Ovechkin tumbled in the last few years?

      • The Cat says:

He could score but hed have never been a big deal if he had Crosby or Datsyuk’s personality …He was the PK Subban of forwards.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

      • Chris says:

Quite far. But he’s still a heck of a player. He just desperately needs a change of scenery and a kick in the pants.

        • twilighthours says:

Now we agree. Superstar still lurks underneath there.

          • Chris says:

I think if you put him in a hockey market, he would thrive. But only if that team has a strong leadership core, both on the ice and in the administration.

You still see flashes of the old Ovie. I think he’s just quit on the Capitals. He wouldn’t be the first or last that does that.

    • RockinRey says:

Sorry its by a country mile. Not even close. In terms of prep, conditioning ,overall skill level, and his drive and determination sets him alone.

This guy is definitely in a class by himself. He doesn’t even have to win the scoring race and its still true.

That said the Habs win tonight!

      • Chris says:

Datsyuk is one of the best conditioned and hardest working athletes in the sport. And he gives up absolutely nothing in terms of overall skill level.

The big difference is the attention to detail for Datsyuk over the entire rink. He works just as hard in the defensive zone and in the neutral zone as he does in the offensive zone.

I agree that Crosby is the best. But Datsyuk is right there with him. The big advantage for Crosby is his age.

      • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Saw Crosby once in a pair of shorts. His legs are tree trunks. Absolutely huge. Not only a great player but a physical specimen as well.

“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin

    • Da Hema says:

It’s good to have contrarians I suppose. Would you seriously need to deeply contemplate selecting Crosby over Datsyuk if both were available?

      • Chris says:

Crosby at 26 years old is obviously better than Datsyuk at 34.

It’s not so much being contrarian…I think Crosby is the best as well. But I always hate how underrated Datsyuk is.

The scariest thing is how much better Crosby becomes in all aspects of the game. When everybody was talking up Ovechkin, you could just see Crosby say “Fine, I’ll go win a goal-scoring title.”

Then he became a faceoff wizard.

I have zero doubt in my mind that Crosby will become one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL as well, because he accomplishes whatever he sets his mind to. The kid is incredible.

        • twilighthours says:

Who would a team rather have for this season, and only this season? Crosby, and it’s not even a discussion

          • Chris says:

            Of course.

My argument was merely that the gap between Crosby and the next group isn’t quite the gap that it is made out to be. For example, the current poll over at the NHL.com website is who is the top centre. The results are currently:

            Sidney Crosby – 21.47%
            Jonathan Toews – 20.52%
            Steven Stamkos – 19.88%
            Evgeni Malkin – 18.40%
            Other – 19.73%

21.47% of people got the answer right. But the closeness of that vote tells you all you need to know about how close it actually is.

Toews and Datsyuk sacrifice offence but gain a lot of credit for defensive prowess, which is a massive advantage they hold over Crosby. You can probably throw Zetterberg, who often lines up as a centre but also plays wing on occasion, into the mix.

Stamkos is the best pure goal-scorer in the NHL today. Malkin can go head-to-head with Crosby whenever he is healthy.

Crosby is the leader of the pack. But if he falters even a bit, there is an unbelievably talented pack of centres (Toews, Datsyuk, Malkin, Stamkos, Zetterberg, and Giroux) nipping at his heels for supremacy.

Nobody would take Datsyuk over the rest of that group because of his age (34). I suspect Malkin would be a no-go now because of his injuries. But they are all guys that any GM would die to have on their team this season. All of them can go head-to-head with Crosby in any given playoff series and come out basically a wash. Claude Giroux showed this pretty emphatically in last year’s playoffs when he lit up the Penguins (6 goals, 14 points and +6 in 6 games) while often matched up against Crosby (3 goals, 8 points and -3 in 6 games).

        • Da Hema says:

Yes. Crosby at 26 is better than Datsyuk at 34. My point, not explicitly stated, was whether someone would select any current player in the NHL over Crosby assuming they all were at the peaks of their careers. If you really need to “think deeply” about who you would select, well….that speaks for itself.

          • Chris says:

Sure. There are plenty of people that worry about Crosby’s concussion history, for one. So I suspect there are GM’s that might think very carefully given the rather preposterous hypothetical choice between Toews, Crosby, Stamkos and Giroux, for example.

    • HabinBurlington says:

For me my number 2 is Toews, brings every element of the game from finesse to physicality, defense and offense. But I know I have a Bias.

      • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Toews slightly over Giroux. Karlsson is fantastic too…

“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin

      • jmsheehy19 says:

Toews, Datsyuk, Malkin, Giroux, Stamkos, and Zetterberg are all just a step behind Crosby in my mind. And I think Tavares and Kopitar are arguable for that group as well.

  45. Habitant in Surrey says:

But in a playoff context, wouldn’t we need to score more than we do at present, current success notwithstanding?

  47. Habfan10912 says:

I apologize in advance for the tone of this post. I sat down this afternoon to watch the Flyer Sens game and not 10 minutes into the game there was one of those dangerous, reckless, meaningless hits we’ve seen all too often recently. The Flyers Zolnierczyk absolutely creamed the Sens players Lundin. Leaving his feet and throwing his shoulder and forearm into Lundin’s head. I shut the game off after that and took a nap. When is this league going to learn? This game already has a reputation in the mainstream sports world of being barbaric and WWE like. And this hit will now be shown on sports highlight shows for the next 24 hours all over North America. Jokes will be made and ha ha ha’s all around.
Now Shanny and his cohorts will come up with a 3 to 5 game suspension complete with a video explaining how player A left his feet, made primary contact to players B head and announce the suspension. Then all the league execs will pat themselves on the back for a job well done. Then silence for a few days until the next dangerous, reckless, unnecessary hit comes along.
Folks, someone is going to get killed and it’s likely to happen soon. I think they are already killing our game. Just nauseating that we have to continue to watch these idiot players, and I mean idiots, assault their fellow players with total disregard. Maybe instead of a 5 game suspension Zolnierczyk ought to be made to play without any friggin pads for 5 games. Just a complete idiot.
    Rant over. Sorry.

    • The Cat says:

I didn’t catch all of it, but I found the sens were getting the shaft with the officiating in the third. Alfie got ejected.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

    • Dunboyne Mike says:

      Don’t be sorry.
The business end of hockey is convinced these hits are good for profit, however bad for players’ health. It’s immoral, but who cares?
If the NHL wanted to eliminate those hits, it would. (Significant suspensions and fines — for players, coaches and owners — would do it). But the NHL doesn’t want to eliminate those hits. Those Shanahan things are just window-dressing.
Like you, I feel sick on hits like that, irrespective of what team the recipient plays for.

    • Mr. Biter says:

Did not see the hit, but like you said it will be on Coach’s corner tonite for sure. NHL has 2 problems with the Head shots or knee to knee:
      1) Have to give very long suspensions in an intent to injure
      2) Players don’t have any respect for each other and that unfortunatly is the problem of the NHL Players assn. not the NHL.

      Mr. Biter
      No Guts No Glory

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

        That’s a good point.
Also, it’s hard for us to get inside players’ heads when you see so many of them, including non-fighters, insisting that they want to keep fighting in the game.

    • FunkyCrabChairNF says:

I don’t think this sport involves too many of the brightest minds, so to say. Especially in the past 10-20 years.

One will inevitably argue that the game used to be more violent, ie fights, brawls, and other brutality, and that may be true. But the fact is that we now have knowledge and technology available to use that shows us how dangerous these events are that was not always around. We’re talking BRAIN INJURIES. You ARE your brain, the rest is just attached. But this is okay… Tells me the game has gone dumberer.

I would take satisfaction in the league folding due to a huge NFL-like lawsuit as a matter of justice.

      • Dunboyne Mike says:

        We could play Olympics-style hockey.
The league and networks believe this would lose millions of fans/viewers.
        I think they’re horribly wrong.
And you’re right to suggest that only some kind of lawsuit — ie. financial pressure — will ever get them to shift. Meantime, more brain damage.
Look, they didn’t blink when they nearly lost their poster-boy.

    • frozengolf says:

I just saw the hit and it was brutal. That whole line of the Flyers was looking for trouble, as Zac Rinaldo came roaring in after the hit with his gloves off ready for fighting. To get crap like that out of the game it should be an automatic 10 game suspension and $250,000 fine to the team.

  62. Loonie says:

Since some journalists are chucking stuff to the wall and hoping it sticks I’ll take a shot at it.

Sometime in the next few weeks Brian Gionta and Yannick Weber get traded to the Sharks for Matt Pelech and a 1st round pick.

    • The Jackal says:

Ya know, on a side topic, do you really think we would trade Gionta this season?
I wouldn’t mess with the chemistry any more this season, but of course I’m not as knowledgeable as MB.
That being said, it seems our Habs are tight and the locker room atmosphere is quite positive, so removing the captain could change things. That being said, Gio either takes a pay cut and plays a diminished role after his contract is up, or they move him in some way.

      • Loonie says:

Cole was a pretty big hit in the room from day one. He got moved.

Nothing would surprise me. Bergevin doesn’t give me the impression that he cares about the feelings of his players, or rather doesn’t value it more than business decisions.

  63. HabinBurlington says:

  65. HabinBurlington says:

Looks like we are heading into the game as underdogs now that Boston has beaten Tampa.

    • Loonie says:

You make a funny but interesting point.

Whey are people so surprised around here when Boston wins a friggin hockey game?

As much as most of us despise them they are one of the league’s better teams.

Us beating them would be a surprise. Definitely falls into the category of games this team isn’t supposed to win.

      • HabinBurlington says:

Yah, while I hate to admit it, Boston has virtually no weaknesses in their lineup. I can never forgive Ottawa for how they mismanaged their team allowing Chara to walk away and into Boston’s hands as a UFA.

      • The Jackal says:

        I beg to differ.
We’re very capable of beating those buffoons.
We proved that last time in the playoffs. We can beat them and not be surprised. Let’s have faith in the team.

        • Loonie says:

Big difference between capable and expected.

          • The Jackal says:

You’re right, there be a difference, but let’s not be surprised when we beat them, we can do it.

          • wjc says:

I expect Canadiens to get 3 out of 4 points on the weekend. Boston/Montreal will be tight checking with overtime loss or win.

            wjc

        • Mr. Biter says:

Actually our line-up is much better than the last time we played the Bruins. Remember Staubitz never got to play against the Bruins last year. I do expect some fistcuffs from Prust and one of a number of Bruins (hopefully Lucic) and a sound beatdown of same Lucic would make my Sunday. Also looking forward to B Gally playing vs. the weasel from the Bruins.

          Mr. Biter
          No Guts No Glory

          • Loonie says:

            No Bourque or Diaz.

          • Mr. Biter says:

Good point, but still 2 Gally’s, Ryder, Markov,Prust are upgrades from last year and last year Bourque sucked.

            Mr. Biter
            No Guts No Glory

          • wjc says:

Montreal cannot fight with Boston, they have to use their strengths speed, passing, power play. Fighting is not Canadiens strength at the moment and they will stick to hockey.

            wjc

          • Mr. Biter says:

No, but if the Bruins are down by a couple and try to repeat the “Beatdown” we do have more “Beef” available so it won’t happen again and yes a fast mobile defense will move the puck out, but we still have to protect Price from them running him ala Lucic/Miller last year.

            Mr. Biter
            No Guts No Glory

        • The Dude says:

Boston’s going to go for our Achilles heal “Habs lil Defense” tomorrow.Wonder how it’s gonna work out for us

          • wjc says:

The Canadiens are smaller on defence, but fast and mobile. They will work on quick out of the zone passes and Boston will have to repect that.

Canadiens will move puck quickly and keep Boston back. Fighting is over rated and Lucic will have to be skating his hardest to keep up.

            wjc

        • Curtis O Habs says:

Totally agree. Toronto tries to bring the same game, but with a little less scoring punch.

  66. The Jackal says:

Folks, I bloody hate the Boston Bruins.
They are the worst team in the NHL in terms of the disgust-factor.
They get these ridiculous calls their way, all the time, and it is not beyond the realm of sanity to associate that with their league connections.
Putting that aside, they got an extremely easy schedule to start the year, and other teams are making them look better than they are.
Tampa blew a 2-0 lead to them, now they think they’re good!
I hope we pulverize them tomorrow, looking at their smug looks makes me sick, as I know it makes all you nauseous.
I hope our Habs win two straight this weekend, and that Boston rethinks their image of being good to one of being scum.
    Amen.

    • Loonie says:

Boston is exactly good as they’re advertised. The only questions surrounding that team is whether they can thrive without Chara and whether Tukka Rask can hold up playing the majority of the games.

      • HabLion says:

Hypothetically? Or, did something happen to Chara?

      • The Jackal says:

Damn you Loonie, I’m trying to sling mud at them.
Not to sound super Hab biased, which I am, but Boston has some horseshoes where the sun don’t shine.
Perhaps the theory makes me feel better, but I’m telling you, that team is not as good as they have been playing. They’ve benefited from playing bad teams and being able to score opportunistic goals. Of course, beat bad teams and score those goals, good teams do, but they have an irritating air about them.
I honestly don’t think they are as good as their record. We can beat them, and I would put money on the Habs in a 7 game series, and not hesitate about it.

Now, this may be the part where you call me crazy, but let’s entertain our favourite HIO conspiracy – that their league connections are used to produce advantages against other teams in many ways. Is this out the realm of the possible? I don’t think so. Before telling me I’m comparing different things here, let me clarify that this is just for the purpose of example.
Look at soccer, there have been many match fixing scandals and other issues of the sort, and indeed, through almost every sport, there have been similar issues. It is not crazy to think that in the NHL, some people are pulling some strings in ways that benefit a particular team.

Am I nuts for thinking this? I’d rather this not be true, of course, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the old boys club made concessions to each other every now and then.

        • Loonie says:

They’re irritating no doubt. I also have no doubt that they’ve received preferential treatment from the fellas in Tronna. But from top to bottom they are definitely better than us. I think the Habs can beat them, but I’m not betting on it in a seven game series.

          • The Jackal says:

            I’ll bet for you!
Call me biased, but I don’t think they are that much better than us.
What separates them from other teams is their confidence, which makes them play well. Of course that is an important factor, but in the playoffs, that swings back and forth, and I think the Habs can take the edge if they win a few games and make a statement by playing well themselves.

        • The Cat says:

Every league has outcomes that they desire.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

    • wjc says:

You my friend are a ‘homer’. Conveniently forgetting Canadiens home game advantage. Canadiens had several home games and this helped them.

Montreal will not pulverize Boston tomorrow, although, I predict Montreal will win the game. Everybody looks smug when they win.

Boston is a good team…..get over it. They are built for toughness and Montreal is built for speed, interesting contrast of styles.
