Liveblog: Penguins 7 – Canadiens 6 in OT

P.K.Pitt

For providing that much entertainment, both teams deserved two points.
This was like the Thrilla in Manilla.
Six goals in the second period, four in the third.
And one 52 seconds into Overtime, by Brandon Sutter, who had a wide-open look to Carey Price’s glove side.
Great game.

Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe had the best tweet: “NHL moved its All-Star Game to Montreal tonight?”

Canadiens outshot the visitors 39-36 and battled back from deficits of 4-2 and 6-5.

Statistical oddity: Only one power-play goal, Sutter in the first period.

The seven goals  on Price equal what he allowed in his previous four games.

The Canadiens have at laest a point in 10 straight games – first such streak since Feb. 23-March19, 1994.

Will they have anything left in Boston?

Last time 13 goals were scored at the Bell Centre: Oct. 21, 2006, Canadiens 8 – Colorado 5

Price has watched the winning goal now 10 times on replay and still hasn’t seen it, let alone move on it.

As I said a couple of days ago, and got blasted for it, this team can play hockey against the bad teams, and more than half this conference is bad.
It is still a soft team, not a great playoff team.

I agree withe prevailing mood on here :
Habs don’t have a lights out superstar goalie
Habs don’t have a heavyweight bludgeoner
Habs don’t have monster shutdown D Man
Habs can’t go deep in playoffs with these issues

Ooh Aah Habs on the war path

  3. Da Hema says:

A high-scoring game certainly advantages Pittsburgh. I have never been one to attack Price, but I have to say I am finding it hard to understand on what basis people consider him an “elite goalie.” Indeed, as much as I love the Habs, I didn’t even think about Price when discussion emerged about our next Olympic goalie. I would select Luongo before Price as far as the Olympics are concerned. An elite goalie — i.e., Martin Brodeur — is one who because of his play leads his team to victory. I can’t recall the last time Price actually “stole” a game for the Habs.

I am not arguing we should trade Price. He remains this organization’s best goalie. But I do urge Marc Bergevin and Trevor Timmins to begin the process of restocking the team’s goaltending position. I hope Price proves me wrong, but I doubt he will ever carry a Stanley Cup. He isn’t committed to excellence enough to do that.

    • Timo says:

Incompetence in other areas allowed Price to fly under the radar.

    • thorandresson says:

Really? Luongo? Really? Did you watch the Stanley Cup finals when the Bruins embarrassed him on multiple occasions? And you want that guy to be the starter in the Olympics? Seriously?

Price was wrong tonight – and Riberio has 16 pts

Sat. night. Finally the Habs play on CBC in English. Leafs did not play and that is the only reason that we got to see the Habs.
Don (Gutless) Cherry and Ron McLean did not mention one word or even one letter about the game that was happeng between Pitts. and Montreal on Coaches Corner. All Cherry yapped about was his new hero Kadri and the Leafs. This jerk is a complete disgrace to HNIC and C.B.C.

    • Clay says:

Who still watches Cherry? I certainly don’t. Just ignore him and he will fade away. He’s not even worth mentioning. Even in passing.

No HNIC and CBC are equally culpable.

The CBC does little to control and in fact blindly defends HNIC as its prized cash cow!

One more season for the CBC and if it comes down to money they will be history the CBC hasn’t got the finance to compete with Bell or Rogers!

Barring any type of government intrervention on ‘cultural/fabric of Canadian life ‘ grounds!

With the NHL anyone bet against money winning? Unlikely!

I didn’t see the ol’ fart and his minion tonight but I’d put my money on their segment was pre-recorded since the laffs had the rare sat night off.

    • thorandresson says:

HNIC and CBC are crap, I think most Canadians are aware of this fact already.

If you want to see some good hockey coverage, watch TSN (or RDS), it’s that simple.

  6. Timo says:

Lets just hope the Budaj plays tomorrow cause frankly he cannot possibly do worse than Price.

I have never been a Price basher, but he has been sucking just like his buddy Subban lately. While not a terrible goalie (except for tonight) he hasn’t shown that he can step up and win a game for the Habs. Maybe him and his buddy Subban are both sulking cause they can’t low five anymore, or maybe he believes in his own greatness, but either way he needs to wake the f up and start playing like an NHL goalie.

The whole game was a effing waste from goaltending onwards. Freaking losers.

    • Max says:

Price is an average/good goalie. He is nowhere worth 6.5 million per season and is nowhere near being an elite NHL goalie. He’s always been overhyped and overvalued by hab’s fans/management who’ve always been looking to replace Patrick Roy. I think Price only has a third gear.At 2 or 2.5 per season he looks ok, but not at his current contract.

  7. billylove says:

Sorry Boone, but must disagree that 1) both teams deserved 2 points, and 2) it was a great game. No, the Habs got a point and given the lennnngthy list of flat out breakdowns in their own zone, they perhaps got more than they deserved. They certaintly didn’t deserve 2. If all your interested in is seeing goals scored than yes, that was a great game. I prefer to watch a little more of a complete game which does include playing DEFENSE and not turning the puck over frequently in your own end. Maybe a bit more appropriate to call it an exciting game, not great.

    • Clay says:

You could have exactly the same critique about the Pens game though. Maybe it’s fair to say that neither team deserved 2 points, rather than both did? Because the Pens didn’t wither, by your reasoning.

  8. H.Upmann says:

Somebody should have a talk with Price and explain to him that hes not Luongo and we’re not the nucks. We are the Canadiens and 7 goal games are not allowed. And tell him only once! Actually tell the whole team.

    • Timo says:

For the first time in about 3 years I think that should Habs actually make the playoffs, goaltending is what will do them in. I’ve been reluctant to pin losses on Price but tonight I think is the turning point for me. Him and his silky hair need to stop pucks.

  9. doogie says:

    Interesting stat- Laetang 0 g 4 a = 4 pts and a minus 2 on the night.

Fun game to watch but Habs are playing on heart and a better system. Still not a lot of talent to compete. Give this regime a few years to get the house in order. So the Cole/Ryder deal is incredibly smart by Bergevin.

    Tomorrow will be a toughy!

  10. HAB - Have A Beer says:

It will be two loses in a row come tomorrow. If they couldn’t beat Pittsburgh they won’t beat Boston …Boston much better team than Pittsburgh that’s why they’re #1.

  11. The Dude says:

The Booins are gonna be all over this Defense of ours,we need more size back there to clear the front and make it a lot less comfortable for other teams in our end. And Carey Price has got to start earning his ridicules $6.5 million per season pay in THE F’n THIRD PERIOD!

Don’t take this wrong but have to believe that Cole would have been very effective in this type of free-for-all.

    Cap issues not considered!

Ryder is slow not, physical and not much involved in his own zone!

      • shootdapuck says:

Problems extended far beyond the crease absolutely!

Defense was being hammered in their own end and forwards who would normally be in the slot and covering the blueline got continually sucked down low.

Defensive disinterest by DD and Pleks didn’t help!

The Habs have been on saturday night HNIC National Game 3 times with 3 losses & two of the teams worse losses this season as well as Price’s (6-0,7-6). Blame Bob Cole & Kelly Hrudey for the two bad losses…….lol

  18. Willy the bum says:

Last post before out for Nuit Blanche:

Again an exciting game, at least the Habs got a point. If it’s not for all those goals by Gio and co., all you nay-posters gonna crap on them for the loss, so suck it up. No worries, I understand they won’t jump standings by taking OT/SO losses so far. Got to know they are facing one of the Eastern elites and will face another tomorrow.
Besides, you all just watched a full 60+ minutes of fast-paced, aggressive fore-checking hockey ’til one of the teams breaks.

Goalies are not the reason, it’s the players that makes the game worth watching. I would think that any game would be in the hands of Price, like the same as the hands of Roy a long time back; but I was wrong. Today’s Canadiens is now a real team, and that convinced me because of tonight’s game. The weekend is not over, but for better or worst, after Boston game I would still look at the big picture and realize the Habs has gotten this far.

Anyways, the season is half-way there, and minds are changing depending on the record this team will have soon. But surely we’re in for great hockey treats!

Good night, and get rested for tomorrow, everybody!

Kaberle was good or lucky. Max Pac was weak on the back checking tonight. Would they have won with Cole? I think Ryder played ok he skates better than I remember.

Here’s hoping that tonight was another wakeup call àla Leafs even though they lost in OT this time.

Bad night for the D side of things, but a pretty good explosion on the offensive side. On to Beantown.

  23. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Subban and Kaberle looked good together. I can’t believe I’m suggesting this but maybe down the stretch give Markov a rest here and there and use Kaberle?

BTW Subban and Gorges have zero chemistry anymore. What happened from last year?
