Liveblog: Canadiens blow 4-1 lead, win shootout

A game that was totally under control heads to a shootout:

What a nightmare season!

Pacioretty: Save

Cullen: Save

Heatley: Save

Bourque: Save

Setoguchi: Oy!

β€’ Who’s really coaching the team?

  1. HabinBurlington says:

So the Leafs flew direct to Montreal from Chicago, Chez Paree must have done well tonight.

  2. Ron says:

6-0 Peg in the 3rd. Realilly going at it.

  3. shootdapuck says:

    The Ka-Ca duo plus Webber?

    Throwing gas on a fire?

    What is Ladoucer thinking???

  4. Stev.R says:

Price said he saw Plekanec in middle and tried to hit him with pass. Said he had no leverage to try for a goal. So there you go
    Apron Basu

  5. WindsorHab-10 says:

Win or lose these days will not make any difference. The most frustrating things watching this team this year & the last few have been: a) not playing a full 60 & b) too soft in front of our goalies. Opposing teams take liberties with our goalie because they can knowing how soft our defence & forwards are. I hope the new coaching staff coming in next year changes this crap because with the number of games we have blown this year when leading, puts us as one of the top teams in the Eastern conference.

Refereeing sucks ass. A hook any time during the game is a friggin hook that should be called. This game had no business going into OT as Max Pac was hooked not once, not twice but three times during the same play. No wonder a lot of people are losing interest in the NHL.

    • powdered toastmann says:

That 4 minute Gong Show at the end of the game said it all about this team. Not much more needs to be said. Seen it many times this year with slight variations. But this one was of epic proportions…Chase the puck, no physicality, panic, then collapse.

Yeehaw, Tanka mem non, here we come….

      • jedimyrmidon says:

Yeah, I think the team really loses it when things start to go south. They really do start chasing the game, and the puck. You have 4 guys looking/going after the 1 guy who has the puck with the D standing around uselessly in front of the net.

Price is partially responsible, but most of the goals have the puck going from one end of the ice to the next and on net because the D aren’t pressuring anyone.

  6. shootdapuck says:

The smell of fear and panic was palpable even mid 3rd period.

You could just see the tie coming!

    • Bill says:

You used the word “palpable” on HIO … I am pretty sure you are over the age-limit of 12.

        Exceeded by many multiples!

“Le problem est Markov n’a pas jouer un seul game cette annee”
“Louis Leblanc est un kid locale”

  7. HNS says:

Sure bet to see Budaj in net tomorrow…..

  8. DorvalTony says:

They still (k)need another 3-4 players who are bigger and nastier. Cluster***k never should have made it to the end of the game without being knocked out.

“Okay everybody take a Valium.” – Rene Levesque

  9. habs001 says:

Lots of changes needed on this team..too many players on the team that are okay if you are starting out as an expansion team but not for a major franchise like the habs..

  10. montreal ace says:

Add some dressing room scenes, a touch of blood and voila Goon 2, a love interest too of course.

  11. punkster says:

Imagine if they play this type of chippy, tough game against the Luffas…and win? Sets up a fun filled Saturday night.

May have to buy some extra pogos and Cherry Coke for the weekend.

    Do it up old school.

    ***Subbang Baby!!!***

  12. alfieturcotte says:

I don’t ever feel that a game is totally under control with Price. He is a solid goalie, great puck handler, good legs, but man, does he ever give up soft ones in EACH GAME. Rare are the Halak-esque games that he steals for us.

  13. Mondou6 says:

Philosophical question: If you shelled out $150-200 for a ticket to this game, would you go home happy?

I watched it on free TV, and I feel ripped off.

  14. HabFanSince72 says:

That Francois Gagnon article is quite interesting – I recommend it.

An ex-Ottawa journo, Gagnon is a big Cunny supporter so that might color it, but he suggests that Gainey is calling the shots, as he did to Claude Julien before he canned him. This is the only explanation for Gomez’s ice time (Cunnyworth can’t possibly like Gomez), and for Larry Carriere being in the dressing room.

Maybe he did the same with Carbo. That walk in the park with Kovalev always seemed odd to me. Didn’t respect proper chain of command.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

    • Mondou6 says:

I don’t believe in that excuse. If you own the title of Head Coach, then the decisions are on your head.

If indeed, Gainey, or anyone higher up, insists on “forcing” you to do all sorts of moves that you are opposed to, then you should resign your post.

You can’t get paid to be in a position of authority, and then willingly give it all up, even to higher ups, and expect to be held blameless.

If you own the title, you own the responsibility.

      • HabFanSince72 says:

I don’t think it’s an excuse – it’s an observation. If it’s true maybe BG really does have to go.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

        • Stev.R says:

It may be the only way anything can get done in MTL. The amount of scapegoating that happens to the coaches and general managers in Montreal by the fans is ridiculous. If he hired a coach and a gm just to be the puppet, the front man, the fall guy, just so he could do the real work that needed to be done for an extended period of time. Kind of like the President of the United States is a puppet to the banks.
I don’t think this is whats happening though.

    • HardHabits says:

Carriere wears a wireless ear piece when behind the bench. He’s taking orders and instructions during the game. It’s pretty obvious.

    • VancouverHab says:

Conspiracy theory from a mucraking journalist is not the type of thing that a philosopher would countenance. (The francophone media never liked Gainey as GM, and they have had a hate-on for Gomez since he first arrived.)

And as I said earlier, if Gainey were calling the shots on Gomez’s ice time, he would not call him to be on the fourth line

As a truly substantial philosopher said (back in the 13th C. when wise was wise): “do not multiply theory beyond necessity.”

      • HabFanSince72 says:

Tell me VH, don’t you find the 13th century to be a bit too progressive? I had you pegged as more of a 800-1000 AD kind of guy.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

  15. HNS says:

One more for the wish list after the #1 pick…..a good back up for Mr. Softie.

    • C-Sword says:

You can fault him on the giveaway that led to the goal, but he did his best to stop the puck, the Habs players seemed confused and just stood there watching.

  16. HabinBurlington says:

    Hmmm explains everything

  17. Adidess says:

Setoguchi is actually a good player. He’d be an upgrade on this team over so many other forwards.

  18. Chuck says:

I guess that Emelins’s such a good hitter that he doesn’t even have to leave the bench to knock you on your ass.

  19. Very Disappointed.
Should have never gone to OT.

Should have lost in regulation. TANK HABS TANK

  20. habs_habs_habs_ says:

    So looking at;

To buy out Gomez would cost a total of 6.7 million.

    Cap hits over the next four years would be;

    2012-13: $3,523,810
    2013-14: $4,523,810
    2014-15: $1,666,667
    2015-16: $1,666,667

Is it worth it or would it be better to put up with him for two more years?

  21. I guess our top 10 shootout fails came a few days too early.

  22. Cal says:

Hysterical win. Tonight was a demonstration of how terrible the Habs can play. Even if they are up 4-1 it doesn’t matter. That 4th goal against was horrible.

  23. tote-road says:

Wow – that Setaguchi wouldn’t look out of place on our squad. Perhaps PG can pick him up in the off season and then he could skate on a line with Gomez next year.

  24. ZimHabwe says:

Things are really bad when a blown 3 goal lead is salvaged by The Gimmick.

  25. kempie says:

I honestly had no idea that finishing 30th would be so difficult.

  26. Emelin should have been first star for that Jedi Mind-Check he laid on Setoguchi in the shootout.

  27. Bill says:

It doesn’t matter how you win.

First of all, should’ve ended 5-3 in regulation: that ref is an incompetent asshole. WTF.

Second of all … actually that’s it.

    • jedimyrmidon says:

Yeah, really. It was just so plain obvious that he was being hooked all the way down the ice. It’s always like that. Their priority is to make things interesting first. Officiate second.

Justice that Setoguchi tripped on his attempt.

    • kholdstare says:

No it doesnt matter how you win but it should that was terrible, we were up 4-1 with five minutes left. There is no reason they went to OT none. Even the ref sure you can blame one but it was 4-1 with five minutes left. Make it to centre, chip it in, shut it down, not rocket science. Coaching is terrible, why doesnt anyone admit it.

  28. Adidess says:

With what happened tonight and the western road trip coming up, I’m really not worried about them winning too much to screw up draft position.

I just want another win Saturday to put the ‘final’ nail in the coffin of our favorite whipping boy, the TML! And my season can end peacefully…

  29. Propwash says:

Wonky ending to a wonky game.

    Don’t let the wultures getcha.

  30. Ron says:

Absolute wacky game. The three stooges had nothing on this night. Wow….

  31. boing007 says:

    KabCam are worst than Spam.

    Richard R

  32. Nobody says:

I don’t understand what people think this team has to gain by winning. The only prize left this year is a high draft pick. Cheer for every goal against. A loss is a win now.

  33. kholdstare says:

Embarrassing pointless win. I feel sorry for people that actually paid to go see that.

  34. punkster says:

The tank is off…long live the Habs!

    Cue the comeback!

This is the start of our 16-3-0 run!

We don’t need no stinkin’ first pick!

    ***Subbang Baby!!!***

  35. Mavid says:

hahahaha who trips on his own feet and falls during a shootout..see there are worse things than us…

  36. krob1000 says:

this game was a blooper video…Emelin on Cole, WhiteΓ¨s trash talking, White pounding the guy while Campoli held him, Patches being hooked 3 times on the open net, the terrible call on the Kaberle phantom hit on Clutterbuck, Weber high sticking Emelin to lead to a goal, Price trying for the empty net and it costing us, that shootout attempt….this was a a free blooper video to show the kids

  37. Mondou6 says:

Well that was fun. We humiliated ourselves, melted down, blew a 3 goal lead in 3 minutes, and then ended up with 2 points that could prevent us from getting the help we desperately need in the draft.

    All around, worst possible outcome.

  38. kempie says:

How dare they try to outsuck US in our own barn? They had no idea who they’ were playing with here.

  39. twilighthours says:

It’s important to remember, guys: there are still a few people left on earth who think Gomez is currently a better player than desharnais.

  40. Rainrocket16 says:

    Hail Hail great David!!

  41. Rickly33 says:

Can’t believe he didn’t use baby boom for that, should have given the kid a shot

  42. jo_maka says:

Was that Setoguchi or Gomez ???
Open-mindedness is not a skull fracture

  43. podbay says:

Has to be the most unsatisfying win of the season.

  44. Adidess says:

This is the most ridiculous game I have ever watched. And I have watched lingerie football! LOL

  45. krulmadden says:

Now THAT’s embarassing! Way to go Setaguchi!

  46. HNS says:

Nice Setachokie. Price should buy a lottery ticket tonite.

  47. BKAK72 says:

    Forum ghosts…?

  48. Chuck says:

Ha! Price with the Vulcan Mind Melt save!

  49. alwayssunny says:

YES! We won. A very impressive two points.

  50. NLhabsfan says:

  51. Propwash says:

    Don’t let the wultures getcha.

  52. HabinBurlington says:

Carey Price froze him in his tracks, All praise Price!!!!

  53. jedimyrmidon says:

Rofl! I am rolling on the floor laughing right now!

  54. Mondou6 says:

  55. L Elle says:

    Oh Ye of little faith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. Mavid says:

    talk about shitting the bed…sigh….

  57. NLhabsfan says:

    Don’t see many deaks.

  58. Michael says:

Geez, with <5 minutes remaining and a 3-goal lead, I thought it was safe to take the trash out. WTF?! Guys, this is my fault. The world revolves around me, and I shouldn't have left my boys alone with a 3-goal lead. I'll see if I can make this up by pulling out my autographed Maurice Richard jersey. (I've PVR'd the game, and am now a few minutes behind because I rewinded to watch the breakdown, so hopefully we haven't already finished this horrorshow).

  59. NLhabsfan says:

    Nice deal

  60. HNS says:

  61. Stev.R says:

    pac dd bourque

  62. Mondou6 says:

Honestly, I don’t even want this extra point. We blew the game already. This extra point is completely useless.

  63. Captain aHab says:

Start with Staubitz and have him destroy the goalie so another non-goalie will have to play the rest of the shootout.

    McGuire for GM!
    Roy for Coach!
    Sh*t for Brains!

  64. novahab says:

Doesn’t this game sum up this F^$#ing season. What a disgrace!

  65. Aybara says:

Looks like Subban finally chewed through the leash.

  66. twilighthours says:

    Entertaining OT, anyway.

  67. danhabsfan says:

Here comes another SO loss…. too bad, this was a fun game for 56 minutes, but again they forgot to play for 60 minutes. I think that is on the coaching.

  68. The Dude says:

LOL.The Dreaded Shoot-Out!!! This is why I smoke!

  69. richriga says:

Honestly is there really any other defenseman in the league who can still go end-to-end like PK does?

  70. SlovakHab says:

Hey, could anyone please post the link so I can watch the SO?

  71. danhabsfan says:

Here comes another SO loss…. too bad, this was a fun game for 56 minutes

  72. The Gonk says:

    Let PK do the shoot-out.

  73. Bill says:

    Me: “Going to a shoot-out”

    8-year-old: “They’re dead”

It’s so sad that my son has to grow up with a Habs team like this. They’re cursed!!
