Liveblog: First W of the season

Alex Galchenyuk
A night of firsts:
First win for Marc Bergevin as Canadiens general manager.
First win for Michel Therrien 2.0.
First NHL point for Brendan Gallagher.
And … all together now:
Get used to yelling that non-Canadian name.
The kid, chosen third overall in a draft that seems a long time ago, scored the first of what will be many, many NHL goals.
It gave the Canadiens a 4-1 lead in the second period and sent the Bell Centre faithful into a frenzy.

And what a night for HIO: 1,000-plus Comments on the second live blog of the season.

Hockey is back, eh?

  1. Mavid says:

can you guys (being so smart) help me with my hockey pics I really want to win and beat the guys at work

  2. Rob Maguire says:

Hey Boone, is there any way you can make the live blog window larger? It’s so small one can only see about 3 updates at a time, which requires a lot of scrolling. Thanks!

  3. sane hockey fan says:

    LOVING Prust!!

  4. commandant says:

Didn’t take long for Gallagher to run over the first goalie of his NHL career. Many more to come

  7. topher5468 says:

Great play by Prust, made the hit and the pass that created a scoring chance. My Ranger fan friends say the rangers really miss him

  8. Saintpatrick33 says:

I’m loving the Gally Chukky Prust line

  9. Danno says:

This isn’t the same team that stunk against the Leafs

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”

  10. kempie says:

    This is much better.

  11. CharlieHodgeFan says:

If they can sustain this speed and energy against a team on the Panthers’ schedule, good things could happen. What are these quick moving things in red, and why are they so unfamiliar?

  12. Bill says:

Lol, Gallagher just shoved that Panther into the net with some hard jiu-jitsu, loved it.

    • Marc10 says:

That was a well executed, albeit un-orthodox takedown. Now Prust for the ground and pound.

Nice work by Mighty Mouse! (Wouldn’t call him that to his face… πŸ™‚

    I’m loving Gallagher and Prust.

  16. EricInStL says:

Some stupid spectators booing Kovy. Should be kicked out for not knowing hockey. What an embarrassment.

  17. HabFanSince72 says:

    Why are a**holes booing Kovalev?

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

Team so far is night and day from Saturday

  21. NoTinFoilCups says:

Something tells me the HIO servers wont be able to handle the live blog again this evening. I am taking a look at the Scribble Live application and on first glance it looks like a memory and CPU hog. I have a feeling that this is the primary if not the sole cause of the all the HIO server crashes.

  33. neumann103 says:

Ditto on welcome back to Mike Boone and thanks for doing this.

Oh BTW et le freaking BUT!

    Numero Quatorze…Tomas Plekanec!!!!!!

    “Et le but!”

  34. EricInStL says:

    good play

  35. NLhabsfan says:

    Five hole

  36. Haborama says:

re HabInBurlington: I hope he never gets into a single career fight.

All I hope is that he turns out to be more Hossa/Kovulchuck, less Sedin.

  37. PeriodPain says:

    Pleks is back

  38. Adidess says:

    All Diaz on that goal!!!

  39. Blondie says:

  40. durocher says:

Nice play! Gotta give credit where credit is due, that was a nice breakout pass by Diaz (who I generally slam on this site)

Looks like he is back and played a good shift. Showed patience trying to find Gally(s) in front of the net.

Actually every line is showing patience trying to find someone in front of the net. COuld this have actually been coached?

      “Et le but!”

  44. frontenac1 says:

    Ah Sh*t! Prust is dinged!

  45. HabinBurlington says:

All 4 lines had good first shifts, love the agressive forecheck and Et Le BUt

  48. Boomer says:

  49. Haborama says:

    Gentlemen start your engines!

  50. durocher says:

And Diaz trips on the blueline

  51. Bill says:

Read a few comments on here tonight dismissing Eller and Leblanc as nothing more than potential third-liners … my question is what’s wrong with being a third-liner?

Guy Carbonneau played on the 3rd line his whole career and he was an excellent player and one of the team MVPs every year. If Leblanc or Eller could become something like that, it would be fantastic.

And I know it keeps getting asked, but someone want to tell me about all the top-six superstars who were drafted after the “wasted” Leblanc pick at 18th?

  52. Chris says:

Since I missed the first live blog, welcome back Mike Boone.

    You’ve been missed!

  53. Adidess says:

    Agreed with Bill J.

One of the reasons why a potential Therrien hiring had me worried even before it materialized was how vocal/unguarded I found him to be on L’Antichambre all last year regarding the team and especially certain players.

Everyone was down on Gomez, so no surprise he was harsh. But Eller , PK, Kaberle, and Cammalleri were regular targets of criticism.
He wasn’t alone and some of the stuff he was saying were often supported, but he could have been more diplomatic (the way some of those unemployed NBA or NFL coaches handle their duties on telecast). I am not sure it is a positive thing for a team to have a coach who’s on record as having publicly chided a good portion of the team.

It may not be the case, but for those who used to hear him express views on Eller, it feels like he’s basing his decision on more than that first game. On PK, who’s to say Therrien’s public comments on him might not be a factor in how long it’s taking the two sides to sign on the dotted line. I don’t know these things for a fact, but that’s the downside of being privy to the coach private opinions and perception of players.

Beyond these hypotheses, i think we can safely say that Therrien is from the JM school of hockey (loves ‘les joeurs robustes’ et les joueurs de ‘profondeur’, but very impatient with talented guys who don’t seem to put up points or block shots).

Whenever a team changes its coach, you hope the new guy is an innovator and a breath of fresh air, but I think what we have here is an instructeur de la vieille Γ©cole, who’ll be making decisions like the one today more often than one would like. Again, these are observations that would stand whether we lost the first game or not. I hope nobody thinks I am sharing these reflections because of one loss.

  54. commandant says:

    Gorges Diaz eh?

So is this more minutes for Diaz than we ideally want to see? or not enough out of Gorges?

its on Bell in HD Channel 1451 its a Fox feed so this should be interesting..the stupid flashy panther crap has they still have the glowing puck? I hope not..

    • topher5468 says:

These guys aren’t that bad on the Fox Florida feed, Trust me, they’re better than the morons who do the Lightning games. Lindsey once said the H in the CH stood for Habs,

“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”

    • byrneoNL says:

I just called Bell cause RDS HD disappeared when they changed me over to some new fangled “package” before Christmas. Assured me I’d keep all the same channels, and save money. So I notice no RDS, call them up and they want to charge me $15 for JUST RDS. o_0

  56. frontenac1 says:

    Ok Les Boys! Vas-y!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. Boomer says:

    So Prust/Galchenyuk/Gallagher ey?

  58. Blondie says:

Hmm, got a Fox feed, this should be interesting.

  59. Ian Cobb says:

    Game Two. Here we go!

  60. EastOnt.CanadiensFan says:

re the infamous Haborama thread: I think everyone needs to calm the hell down, I think you are all misinterpreting what he said. I saw Gally get attacked by Komarov too, some leaf fans on twitter were having a blast about it and calling him “Galchicken”, it made my blood boil, so I can totally see where he is coming from. I like Chucky a lot and think he needs a little patience as his confidence grows.

we all need to chill out, it’s a free country compadres……….

besides, I think he subscribes to the Frontenac1 school of player preference. Which is totally fine, I remember being pretty upset after no one took a run at that little rat Dale Hunter way back in the day……..

    • Haborama says:

Thanks man, I was getting the mafia treatment back there, the fact that they had no idea what they were talking about made it that much worse………..

Also, I hate to admit it, but I was HAMMERED when I did the infamous post…………

  61. Sportfan says:

First it was the Stars owning the Cowboys which was fantastic now this
they are becoming the funniest team in the NHL

  62. habsfaninboston says:

400 posts and the game hasn’t even started. Gonna be a long night.

  63. commandant says:

Boones game blog is really small

How do we make it bigger?

    Do we bring in Chantal?

  64. jols101 says:

This free trial NHL Center Ice is showing all the games but I can’t find the Habs game. I don’t mind RDS but i can’t understand a thing. Anyone find the game on NHL Center Ice?

  65. Sean Bonjovi says:

    Mike Boone wrote:

“Did y’all hear Pierre McGuire on Melnick’s show? Talking about Lars Eller. Credits him for size, speed and great work habits. But McG says there are hockey sense issues. Doubts he’ll ever be a Top Six.”

That’s been my opinion for two years, but now that I’ve learned that Pierre McGuire shares that opinion I’m suddenly beginning to doubt myself.

    • Phil C says:

McGuire has been saying that since the day the trade was made, so he is not going to back away from it now.

    • twilighthours says:

Totally agree. It freaked me out.

    • Bill says:

Pierre McGuire, no force on earth could shut that self-important hack up. You don’t make it to the NHL without hockey sense (unless you’re some goon).

And there are people on this site who wanted him for GM. Thank fortune that never happened.

  66. HAB-PROFESSOR says:

Looking forward to watching the Magician tonight…

Never should have let this guy out of the organization… oh well, another mistake in an endless line of mistakes…

The N.A.G. effect remains the only path to success…

  67. So 20+ minutes TOI for Bouillon tonight?

Habs SHOULD win this handily if they play smart, despite Clemmenson. They don’t need Subban to beat them and the Panthers are playing their 3rd in four nights.

Interesting comments from Gorges on Kovy. Says was just a matter of he wanted it, and that apparantly he does now.

  69. Say Ash says:

  70. Danno says:

    Thanks in advance!
