The usual suspects:
Max Pacioretty scored his 33rd, Erik Cole his 35th.
Brad Staubitz got a 200-foot empty-netter
And Tomas Plekanec got a 3-on-5 shorty.
Peter Budaj was really good.
• • •
• Gorges leads the NHL in blocked shots. As Don Cherry told Dave Stubbs:
“It’s one thing for guys to block shots when you’re on the march to the Stanley Cup, but it’s pretty tough to do it when you know you’re going nowhere,” Cherry said. “Guys usually say, ‘Forget it.’ But Gorges is going right to the end.”
Coming off knee surgery and playing against the opponent’s best forwards night after night, Gorges is plus-13 on a team that has lost 51 games.
Cherry is right: No disrespect to Brian Gionta, but number 26 should be wearing the “C”.
• On Friday night’s edition of L’Antichambre, Michel Bergeron – who usually gives it to the Canadiens pretty good – had high praise for Cunneyworth.
You can criticize strategy and decision like using Tomas Kaberle in a shootout, Bergeron said, but you have to admire Cunneyworth’s grace under pressure.
The coach knows he won’t be back behind the Canadiens’ bench next season. But Cunneyworth has comported himself with dignity, class and good humour.
He is a profoundly decent man, and I hope there’s still a good job for him in hockey.
Bergeron suggests before the Canadiens take the ice for their last game, someone – Gorges is the ideal candidate – should get up in the room and say “Let’s play our asses off and win this thing for Randy.”
There isn’t much else in the way of motivation.

Don’t they know how many third period leads we lost and they start firkin singing??
As Sean Connery says in Hunt for Red October, Let them Sing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezmBGc9AfC8
It’s like a Pavlovian response — the Habs players hear the fans sing, they then take some too-many-men penalties and blow the lead
Kaberle totally lost on his assignment
They shouldn’t sing yet.
Bah, it’s pretty much the last time in 5 months that they can sing, so for what it matters. Carpe Diem, at this point!
Singing ‘Olé’ is different than the Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye song, it can’t be premature. When the fans sing Olé, it means we’re having a good time and we love our Canadiens.
———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?

Exactly, singing ‘Olé’ is almost the same and chanting ‘Go Habs Go’. I personally love it.
Hey guys, remember when that reporter called out JM for not using Cole on the PP? Good times.
That was Jessica Rusnak.
COle could have high fived the ref there again!
35!!! A quintessential Cole goal.
ERIK COLE M’FOGGAS!!!
YEAAAAHHHH
Cole……nuff said.
ERIK EFFIN’ COLE!!!! Man I love this guy.
Are we going to have a liveblog at Tuesdays’ draft?
ET LE BUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
COOOOOLE!
WHOO
Re-sign Staubitz right after Gomez and Kaberle are dumped from our roster
Anyone still in favor of keeping Ka Ca?
And Stamkos just just scored his 60th.
Awesome! I was hoping he’d reach 60.
Man, the Habs are just STANDING there.
Surely with the CBC getting a $200 mil funding cut, HNIC has to be the first to go right?
No, HNIC makes money. It’s the news division that will take a hit, which will coincidentally help the Sun News Network, possibly?

Which probably pleases our Prime Minister very much. Birds of a feather…

They can’t win when it counts and they can’t lose when it counts … Montreal is an epic FAIL this year.
Watch Edmonton win and the Habs blow the #2 draft pick.
Worst case, we lose in OT, and Edmonton wins.
You mean best case?
No, cause we’d get a point that would keep us ahead of the Oilers.
well at this point lets blow out the laffs
Yup we are definitely in the third period.
Hey Boone do you know if the Canadiens scouting staff is looking at drafting this local boy Mike Matheson from Pointe Claire , might still be available with our first pick in the second round
Update to my earlier post below concerning my hopes of Canadiens drafting local boy Mike Matheson with our 1st pick of the second round. Talking to some scouts looks like he is high on some late first round scouts wish list. Bruins interest is moderate but they love to raid Quebec talent on habs. Pittsburgh is high and also has connection because Matheson’s family has some ties to that organization through one of his Uncle’s. But from all what i hear,,` though if he is still around when St. Louis picks he will be chosen by the Blues. So looks like the habs would have to move up to select this local gem from Pointe Claire
I would like to see Habs use second pick on Mike Matheson local pointe clare boy, rated 25th by ISS 29 byCSS and 37 by TSN, hopefully will still be available with our first pick in the second round, One of the best pure skating d man available in the draft, playing in USHL for former hab Jim Montgomery in Dubuque . Played Midget for Lac st Louis ions, ala Louis Leblanc. Captained Midget lions to Midget provincial Championship last year, played for Canada’s gold medal team at Under 18 Ivan Hlinka, Looks to be headed to NCAA which is fine as we have some d prospects ahead of him . Matheson has size great shot and skates as smooth and strong as anyone in draft. He was projected number 1 in last year’s QMJHL draft ahead of Nathan Mckinnon at the time, but chose the USHL and NCAA route even so still went in the second round of the Q draft would be a steal if we could get him with our first pick in the second round, and a local pick to boot bilingual for all the politically thinking fans. He is a steal in the 2nd round.
an otl would be fitting.
Grabovski with the winner
Ah no, not him.
Hmmm… Habs better get going…

OK… 5 months without Habs hockey is WAY too long. At least it should be an interesting summer.
In the 80s people hated Gretzky, called him much worse than whiner, and swore it was all true. He wasn’t comparing Gretz and Crosby, he was comparing the reaction to them.
Agree to disagree.
Crosby dives and gives cheap shots, which Gretzky didn’t do.
Further, Gretzky became a popular figure, which I’ll wager will not happen to Crosby.
Disagree with you.
Crosby gives ‘cheap shots’ because he constantly receives them from the no talent pluggers who can’t keep up with him. He’s trying to survive, be a porcupine. I didn’t notice him giving any cheap shots during the Olympci games.
Diving is a red herring. Nobody would dive if the refs called every hook, every trip, every hold. There are now different degrees of holding, and the refs are in the awkward position of deciding if a hook is a half hook or a three quarter hook or a full hook. Call every stick on body, and Sidney Crosby and everybody else no longer needs to dive or is accused of doing so.

Sure Mike, it’s your hearing that’s playing tricks on you.

As Boone tosses a full beer in Healey’s direction.
Ladies and gentlemen.. The last 20 minutes of our Canadiens. As pathetic as they might have been this season.. I will miss them tons over the next 4-5 months of offseason.
GO HABS GO!! GO HABS GO!!
Boone, can I take over the liveblog once you intentionally throw something on the ice to make good on that warning?
nice weather no playoffs this really sucks, never spent so much time watching junior hockey online, studying for the big crap shoot the NHL draft who will be the sleepers in the draft
Well, Boone, that would be the perfect time to say ‘Come again?’
oh too funny! haha
That was an interesting question about Vigneault that Healy totally ignored and changed the subject on. Thanks CBC.
I think it was Friedman on Melnick this week saying that Vigneault could be looking for work if the ‘Nucks get eliminated in the first round.
Boone: well, it is Montreal. Looks like Molson is trying hard to please the fans.
Who is this flaming idiot on CBC comparing Crosby to Gretzky.
Yeah, Gretzky was just as much of a punk as Crosby, sure. I love these revisionist history idiots.
Crosby is a “punk” now? He had a couple years of being reasonably criticized as a whiner, but I haven’t seen anything like that from him in ages. He’s the best player in the league right now, just as Gretzky was in the day. I think Gretzky’s the undisputed Best Player Evar, but it’s still an apt comparison to draw between the two.
Drawing a comparison or constructing an analogy doesn’t mean the speaker is saying one player is exactly the same as another or just as good. He’s comparing situations.

Last 20 minutes…sniff…sniff…
Leans over, gives L a hug and says, don’t worry next year will be better.
Thanks Bu..rl…y… sniff…
Then 20 minutes closer to training camp. It’s all upside from now on.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
Hope we win in OT so the leafs pick up a useless point to finish out of a chance at the #1 pick,
There it is, unfolding right before our eyes. If they can only play well in the third, this could be the game that gets this season back on track!
Eric Francis: Pat Brisson won’t be Habs’ new GM.
My vote: Bergevin
That’s funny. I was just this minute having the exact same thought.
The last twenty….
I’m throwing my support in the East behind Washington, simply because they are playing the Bruins. For the West, it would be good to have Chicago win so that Bergevin has another Cup before he takes the helm in Montreal
Hey now, Carolina could score 4 in the last 30 minutes.
3rd period coming up…LET THE THUGS COME OUT
Staubitz should run Phaneuf and/or Komo
Uh, no.

Okay not sure how many have pvr, but if you go back there, right after PK hits Brown, Brown comes into the corner and tries to get his shoulder right into Gorges head, the guy is just a meathead on skates.
Sad thing is these guys pretend to be tough and these tough guys can´t take clean hits anymore. Ridiculous.
No question. The NHL favours no-talent ‘grinders’ and ‘checkers’ over players like David Desharnais. We are the ones who pay for the bleatings of Mike Milbury and Don Cherry.

Another solid PK ass-hit
I like what we’ve seen from the Habs through two periods. The 4th line in particular has been effective (yeah it’s the Leafs, but I believe they were out against Kessel and Grabovski at points).
I sure hope they keep it up in the 3rd.
Nice stick P.K.
Mike Brown you are an idiot! Love it!
SUBBANG!
***Subbang Baby!!!***
Subbang Baby!!!!
Noo, how did he miss that
Has anyone heard anything about Trevor Timmins, where is he spending his time, who does he like for the draft?
He’s looking for a backup for Price. Wants a guy who’ll play 5 or 6 games max at league minimum salary.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
Watching the Junior players still playing I imagine. There is also the U18 WC coming up.
Word is he is at Grigorenko’s game tonight.
Another blow out for the Sea Dogs
Sea Dogs are loaded, they could beat the Leafs.
Hilarious stuff listening to the Toronto Broadcasting Company wax so poetic about the Marlies.
Glenn Healey knows all about being a backup goalie that the team never wanted to play!
Bourque showing signs of life. Budaj with a solid game so far!
Great game by Budaj. Good for him.
Should have been a dive too
“Why are they booing? An obvious kicking motion.”
Probably because they wanted it to be a goal..
I always wondered why you can’t kick the puck in. You’re allowed to kick the puck everywhere else.
Player safety. You don’t want players kicking at a loose puck in a scrum. Blades is sharp and deadly.
———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?
http://relentlessineptitude.blogspot.com/
Yeah I suppose that makes sense.
I’ve always thought it would be interesting to make the rule that you can kick, so long as your foot doesn’t come off the ice.
Someone shut up Healey and his rah rah rah Laff bs.
Healy’s an imbecile.

No, they’re this bad. I have watched them a few times when they were still around the 7 to 10th spot and still had a chance at making the playoffs…
I don’t know what the French word is for “stones” or “cojones,” but Dumont has ‘em

Came to watch a hockey game and some French lessons broke out.
…
Good to see some posters have found a way to somehow slag Price even when he isn’t playing.
They need to pay serious attention:
From my great and good friend Andrew Berkshire: Carey Price is the only goaltender in NHL history to put up two seasons of over 40 games played an .920 save percentage before the age of 24.

It’s sad that adding our highest paid player to the lineup might literally make us worse. Even if it doesn’t, I don’t think any other team can make that argument.
Is it just me or does it seem like the leafs are throwing this game??
Ha! boone and I thinking the same thing at the same time?
Our bottom lines have dominated
So has Geoff Molson’s!

Budaj has been good.
I agree, the Habs should trade Price & their draft pick for a big winger who can score ….
Are you insane?
…Um… He only said Budaj had been good. Which he has, btw. Who talked about trading Price?
Whoa, said nothing about Price.
All right Mike Blunden, you can skate, you hit, and you try hard. You’re on our fourth line next season.

Nice pressure by the Habs.
When new management comes in, I hope Price doesn’t get the same pampering treatment. If the backup is outplaying him he should sit.
No get start after start when he sucks.
You complain about Price, but Rene Bourque is your favorite Canadien???? You’ve lost all credibility………..
Psycho, don’t argue with him, it only encourages him.

We have been very hard on Habs management and rightly so.
But do you guys realize we got Patches (33 goals) and Gorges (strong D) for an ancient Craig Rivet. Meanwhile, TO gave away multiple 1st picks (Seguin + Hamilton) for their scoring forward (Kessel 37 goals)?
I don’t know how Burke corrects this mess for next season (another rebuild?). Plus the current squad doesn’t reflect what his new coach wants to do.
Cassie is taller than Gionta.
Cassie is tolerable till she speaks
