And Americans in general don’t care about hockey. Part of the reason is that they are so heavily invested in football. Another part of the reason is that hockey has a bad reputation here.
You can wink all you want. Every marketing study done on the subject has confirmed that American fans don’t go to games to see fights- it is the CANADIAN market that is most conservative when it comes to hockey rule changes, particularly those that pertain to fighting.

I don’t think the US is the only place where violence is cheered. Fans in Canada stand up and yell just as loud for a fight as they do in the US, and in every building fans go wild for a huge hit, and only after it becomes obvious that a player is injured do they calm down.
