Just as provable–and to me more reasonable–is that JM used ice time & PP time and then calling-out-in-media to light a fire under Cole and get what he, the coach wanted.

This summer was a time of heady optimism for a typical Canadiens fans. Visions of a strong, committed team, with a younger upgraded defence and a forward corps enhanced with the judicious addition of speedy, hulking, invincible Erik Cole and subtraction of a somnambulant Benoit Pouliot danced in our heads.
Then the season started, and the nightmare hit. Carey Price was revealed as something less than the personification of the Great Wall of China. Our youngsters on defence weren’t NHL-ready and the veterans looked old and slow. Stalwarts PK Subban and Josh Gorges tried to do too much to compensate, and they committed crucial blunders. Our forwards lived down to their reputation of being too small and soft. The snipers looked like journeyman 20 goal scorers at best. Erik Cole was a money-pit who would kill our cap for four years. Andrei Markov’s knee was septic spaghetti.
It seemingly only took a management reshuffling for the nightmare to end. Assigning Mr. Pearn’s responsibilities to Mr. Ladouceur and Mr. Cunneyworth, and placing both behind the bench with a mission to provide verbal, enthusiastic direction and correction to the players seemed to tilt the ice our way. Pucks that used to hit the post or aggrandize Jacob Markstrom now find the corner mesh; Raphaël Diaz and Yannick Weber are effective and improve every game; Jaro Spacek seems rejuvenated; Erik Cole, Andrei Kostitsyn, Max Pacioretty and Travis Moen (!) are too much for opposing defencemen to handle. Carey Price is back to his usual unflappable self. David Desharnais plays like Scott Gomez should. Brian Gionta’s snakebitten, Réjean Houle-Chris Higgins impersonation is currently humourous instead of dolorous. Lars Eller finally scores his first goal, after showing flashes of much-needed skill and strength during his trial-by-fire, for-keeps training camp.
Now comes a five day break until the next game, to solidify the confidence and goodwill within the dressing room. Andrei Markov returns to Montreal with a clean bill of health from his doctors and is set to resume on-ice training. GM Pierre Gauthier has slipped the team doctors a twenty, and they will be exquisitely careful with Mr. Gomez’s shoulder treatment and rehab plan, with a resultant projected return to the lineup on February 31st.
———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?
The word on Markov is that his knee is OK. He has some pain a while back and got spooked so they sent him down to Florida to test it. Apparently they ran him through the ringer and placed a whole bunch of pressure on it to prove to him that it’s good to go. Markov really wants to finish his 3 years healthy and just doesn’t want to get injured again. Make of it what you will. He wont rush back so when he comes back he should be 100%. With the new JM who knows what happens too. Maybe Ladouceur only plays him 15-18 minutes per game rather than lean on him for 25 at first.
It’s like we’ve entered a parallel Habs universe the last few days..
I’m overjoyed with Mr. Moen’s showing this season. I posted often this summer that he’s not a first-liner, but he seems determined to make me reconsider. I think this is a result of the addition of Erik Cole and the return of Max Pacioretty to the lineup, with these two it relieves the pressure on him and Andrei Kostitsyn to try to be who they are not meant to be. All four of them complement each other and make each other better, and give opposing coaches and defencemen a headache in trying to figure out who to cover.

…quite a conundrum of decisions not far away …especially on D …just exactly will be the difference Markov makes to Our D …He has not played hard minutes for almost 2 years …He will be playing on a questionable problematic knee …In Subban, Gorges, Gill, Spacek, Diaz, Weber (and even Emelin) We have a blend of D, though not Bad Ass Goliaths, play with exceptional speed, skating ability (Gill excepted), intelligence and offensive potential …that negates lack of size (speed & smarts KILL !)

No question that we miss Andrei Markov, he’s our best defenceman. What the recent spate of success does is it reduces the pressure to rely on him too much as soon as he’s back. In three to four weeks when he plays again (fingers crossed), we can baby him back into the lineup, with 10-12, 15 minutes of ice time max, playing him against the opposition third line (not fourth, don’t want him around crashers and bangers) and second-wave powerplay. We then gradually increase his minutes according to a rigid plan arrived at in consultation with the doctors and physios, as opposed to game necessities, kind of like a pitch count for a pitcher off Tommy John surgery.
The time also will come to put Mr. Gill and Spacek on a rotation, where they are healthy scratches to rest up in preparation for a playoff run. The Three Amigos can also be on a rotation, with Mr. Weber, Diaz and Emelin skipping roughly one game out of three. One defenceman shouldn’t be the odd man out every game, and especially not Alexei Emelin, who brings a skillset to the group that is lacking. I restate my contention that Mr. Emelin should be played over Mr. Spacek, but I understand that with the Seat of Heat Mr. Martin is on, he will play the absolute best roster he thinks he can ice to restart the team and save the season and his job.

ERIC COLE was such a Monster. Hardest working player for us all season. NOw that hes getting the minutes and PP , you see everything working. This guy creates so many chances driving the net, and neutral ice speed is amazing. Love this guy.
Next with MArkov Back, and our PP at full force, All we need to do is create penalties, and stay out the box, and with our man PRICE and SUBBAN, We Are headed to LORD STANLEY.
Julien is such a baby. When he was coach of Montreal I remember saying this: “He’s a pretty good coach, but I can’t stand his whining. Once he starts whining the game is over.”
Really he looks like a big fat baby. It’s sad. If he were my coach I’d be embarrassed.
————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
Number one thing that has changed is they are passing the puck better and picking up the pass. Its far from excellent but a big improvement When Markov gets back watch out for the PP and the D will be the best in the league. This team is starting to look like the team we thought it would be. Biggest issue now what do you do with Gomez there is no place for him on this team.
We are having fun now! One thing I do not like is playing Pleks on the PK, PP, and then his regular shift. It changes the play of Patches, Gionta and himself, to the point of their shift together is not very effective. But after saying that, he pots two tonight.
When Price grew his moustache for movember last year he played really well (if I remember correctly) so hopefully he will grow anothe one this year with the same results………
Three solid periods of hockey from the Habs. (Also, three solid goalposts, but who’s countin’?)
Really disciplined on the D-zone puck possession and unwillin’ to simply dump it out to relieve pressure from the Br00nz forecheck. Earlier in the season, stickin’ to this plan was killin’ the Habs. Only change on this front was Pearn out and Ladouceur in. Maybe there’s actually somethin’ to it rather than all this scapegoat hyperventilation.
Translates into less turnovers and quality scorin’ chances on Price and a relatively seamless and threatenin’ transition game.
The rest follows from that, cause the ice tilts down to the Br00nz end and the Habs are skatin’ around a slow D and can risk a more aggressive forecheck. Chara looks kinda ashen and sick. The rest of the D-corps sags in the absence of his A-game.
Julien had them out hard to try and take it back in the third. Carey Price, baby!
The RDS compilation of Julien’s facial expressions had us all howlin’. That was effin’ priceless.
Those Hab-loving refs keeled this affair. (yes, sarcasm)
Subban sure got the better of Ference after blocking his shot, all in yo face about it, followed by a shove for good measure. Any wonder why so many dis him? The following ppg adds the insult.
B’s never really got outta the gate, and the penalties took their toll.
Edit: Oh yea, a reminder to JM..DD over Gomer. Clear enough?

How is emelin going to get back in the lineup? The worst D man out there right now is gill, and he’s not sitting. You can’t sit weber, Diaz, or spacek – these guys have been great.
Emelin will (may) be back in the lineup when The Habs lose that is usually the philosophy used by most teams when moving players in or out of the lineup or goalie changes………
The CBC are way off base with this calling the Pearn replacement lacking class.
Pearn was a video man. He would look at the tapes and want to talk about them the next day after they were studied. Apparently there was a rift between him and Muller in terms of style. The disagreement was with involving the making the transitions during the game as opposed to during practice.
Ladouceur is also an ex-defense man.
What a load of crap for the CBC to try and slander the Habs that way.
The Habs are to its fans the way a family member is, like a parent or a child. You may be critical with them or show them tough love but if somebody else slanders them you come to their defense unconditionally.
People agreeing with CBC on this don’t call yourself Hab fans.
I agree, that is why as soon as i heard it, I posted complaint. Elliot Friedman should have explained whole scenario rather than just spewing what he hears somewhere and doesn’t provide the defensible context in which Mtl offerd him another job etc..
Pearn leaned on Muller last year for implementation and communication. This year he was lost without it, and the team was in a funk. With two many men on the ice and confusion on and off the bench. Right call was made.
I agree with you 100%…………..Iwas shocked at the cbc panel calling Pearn’s firing classless …………… WHAT!!!!!!for mne something happened maybe we will know sometime what the deal was……………..it seems funny that after he was fired the team seemed to come around…..GO FIGURE!! congrats to the team good game I BELIEVE
Pearn was given the job of the D and the players did not respond and he was fired. Hey this is not grade school it a billion dollar sport and winning is the only thing that counts. Those A-holes on CBC calling this a classless act have their agenda to say that. Now that the Habs are winning they will be pressured not to shove the Leafs down out throats every sat. night. Ther is only onething that is classless and thats the CBC and how they spend out tax dollars.
Funny how when you read a 4-2score, it makes the last 5 minutes of the 3rd period seem easy… it wasnt.
Congrat boys!
Now on to a break.. some real intense participation/involvement in the practices by the two Randys and come back with the same aplomb you showed in period 1 and most of 2.
And JM .. dont scribble any negatives re Eller in that book after this game…
I am being convinced with each game that my theories re the dismissal of PP were right and hence it will be a different team from now on.
Which is why I am surprised and a little disappointed that no one echoed my concern at what PP said in his interview. I refuse to go rea d it again.. but he basically said that he will be bending JM’s ear over the situation.
PLEASE PLEASE PP… Let it be. Leave JM alone… let him ‘grow’ with the two Randys.
PG .. it’s ok to keep PP around in some job… but keep him away from JM. You have been crucified for your move. But I think it was a SMART and necessary move. I wont go over my reasoning again. So please PG.. see to it that PP does not distract JM from totally embracing the ‘change’ you talked about, which I expect to be supplied in a big way by the two Randys.
These 3 games were tentative steps and it’s early.. but darn it things are looking different in a good way.
CONGRATS TO THE TEAM…. practise well … I cant wait till the next game.
Sorry, OT, you got it wrong. Cherry said post-game Cammy was the leader on this team.
Riiiiight. He had a subpar game despite picking up two assists.
But Cherry Knows Best (it’s a sitcom currently in development for syndication).
Next game should be great, Ottawa is playing awesome comeback hockey but Price is better than all their 3 goalies in at the same time! GO HABS GO!!!! Nothing feels better than beating Boston 2 in a row!
Let me admit that I was starting to lose confidence in JM when I saw the team play listlessly against Calgary and one game against Toronto, when losses were piling up, and that I thought he had lost the room when Price was letting in goals, he called out Erik Cole in public and certain vets seemed to be quite slow at picking up assignments.
Well, I was wrong. He hasn’t lost the toom and his “system”, the subject of so much criticism, has allowed inexperienced defensemen to play competitively, and forwards to score. I know we’ll lose games and probably have several losses in a row at some point. But the team is trying, and hasn’t quit and doesn’t look it’s going to any time soon. And that’s what I’ll remember when we do have several losses in a row.
I’ll also say I was unconvinced Bugs’ boy DD could play center in the NHL. Well, DD is proving me wrong. I’d be thrilled if he keeps proving me wrong. The kids are all right. It’s some of the vets (you know who they are) that need to pick up their games from where they are now. I think they will, though — peer pressure will make them.
You nailed the comparison. I didnt see Frank Mahvolich play a lot, I was a ‘brand new Canuck in 1969, but based ob little I saw and reels etc.. right on!
Few things give me more pleasure than discomfiture in Boston.
If the Bruins fire Julien after tonight, that will make two times the Habs get him fired. I always felt he didn’t get a fair shake in Montreal- but watching how he coaches this Bruins team has helped me get over that. He’s a ponce.
He won the cup 4 months ago. he be around for the balance of this year.
The Bruin players are still dining out on the Cup win.
Julien didn’t forget how to coach over the summer.

Begining or ending your arguments based on country of orgin gives you a lifetime membership to the Don Cherry fan club. Like Chorske I live in South Florida but also was there to bus folks to the demonstration in support of Canadian federalism. No lessons in Canadian or American civility required.
Would love to see if the McGuires and the rest of the NHL gang would be as self-righteous in their condemnation of Neely if he fires Julien.
We have a team that was floundering badly, the GM makes a move and they all treat him as some sort of leper. I am NOT a PG fan but fair is fair! He gave one of his most detailed and revealing explanations of why he made the move. When last did you basically hear a GM come right out and admit he (went against his coach) had to ‘convince’ his coach on the need for the change. PG was very forthright in that press conference. He should have been given more credit for it.
YEP! But he must embrace the ideas of the two Randys.. he must embrace ‘change’ … and I take the word right out of PG’s mouth. If he can then having him as the head coach is not a bad thing.
Chorske: You’re 100% right IMO–(1.) Canadians are almost indistinguishable from Americans in most repects, (2.) Canadians are unsufferably self-righteous in many cases (3.) Canadians’ unique identity is for all intents & purposes saying how incredibly superior to Americans they are,, (4.) the keeping of traditions & rules in hockey–a conservative attitude to hockey–is all-but entirely Canadian. Americans for the most part could not care less about glowing pucks or whatever else.
…took the words out of My mouth VH …too many Canadians with fatuous, ignorant naive superiority complexes when it comes to Their opinions of Our Brothers to the South
…penis envy ?
I absolutely think Canadians have their own identity, and I am proud of that identity. But in terms of values, and fundamental social mores, compared on the planetary scale? We’re twins. Conjoined twins.
It depends Chris. If you’re talking Culturally, we’re very similar due to our media being dominated by Americans. But politically Canadians are vastly different to the core.
Thanks for the support. I love my country, and I also love where I am living. I am not blind to its faults– but too many Canadians whistle past the graveyard. You want true conservatism? Go to rural New Brunswick. Or Alberta. Or talk to some of the nobs in the mucho dinero seats at the Bell Centre. THAT is where you will find conservatives. Heck, I’m in the deep south and all of my neighbors are hippies, or gay, or inveterate potheads and live-and-let-live beach bums. This notion of a monolithic, warlike, conservative America is so ridiculous, so smug, so paranoid.
I too love Canada (and am proud to stay here), but being an immigant I get a bit of distance, and notice all the arrogance and simple-mindedness of Canadians toward Americans–whom they are almost identical to!
I assume you are from Vancouver, and with that perspective, I think that what you say is true. Here though, it’s hard to draw the same similarities on things outside of hockey.
I can though probably relate to Americans about as much as I can to you outside of Quebec, although that isn’t saying much. Obviously I’d rather not be associated with either country, but that is another discussion.
Well I have no idea how removing Pearn caused this but along with creating a real 4th line the team is playing much better. Have to believe watching Blunden give his all is infectious, we see Moen stand up to Thornton etc..
Wonder what or who the moronic Jack Edwards is blaming?
… the fans of the Boston Bruins now have lost forever any right to complain that “the league” is out to get their team, and that the Montreal Canadiens have some kind of pull inside the NHL home office.
Cole impressed me! He’s was dangerous any time he was near the puck, but late in the 3rd he also came back really deep in his own end and picked up some loose puck. Great game from him.

Ha Cherry thinks lots of strange calls in Habs/Bruins game, and then Maclean eggs him into a subban comment about drawing penalties and cherry says don’t go there.
Yes, undefeated, but a classless move by the Habs according to the guys on the hotstove and to players and GM’s around the League. I didn’t know that the habs had to get permission from the other 29 teams before making a decision on what to do with regards to their coaching.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

I am flabbergasted. Who would have thought 3 wins in 3 games.
- JM patting Plex on the back after the empty netter.

- Defense driven by speed and movement.
- Aggressive fore check even while leading.

What did CBC say? I thought Plekanec was the best skater on either team, and obviously Price had a big game.
Eller was involved in the play the whole night. A very up and down game for him but you noticed him every damned shift. Could have easily had 3 goals, was a monster on the boards. Was everywhere. Bad giveaway leading to the first Boston goal. I thought the penalty call on him was beyond weak. Campbell or whoever it was just skated over his stick.
Nice confidence builder to pt the kid out for big minutes in the third. Maybe the deuxieme etoile a bit of the same?

Of course it would be. No need for time to tell… time has been telling us this since he was drafted 13 years ago. We’re better with him.

Start him out with PP minutes
finally JM is seeing the light Cole is finally getting first line minutes and a good 8 min on the PP. Better him then Darche.
Oh and i never thought i’d say this but Spacek in the lineup has really settled our D down the guy also blocked 7 shots tonight!!!!!!!!
ERIC COLE was such a Monster. Hardest working player for us all season. NOw that hes getting the minutes and PP , you see everything working. This guy creates so many chances driving the net, and neutral ice speed is amazing. Love this guy.
Next with MArkov Back, and our PP at full force, All we need to do is create penalties, and stay out the box, and with our man PRICE and SUBBAN, We Are headed to LORD STANLEY.
word
Julien is such a baby. When he was coach of Montreal I remember saying this: “He’s a pretty good coach, but I can’t stand his whining. Once he starts whining the game is over.”
Really he looks like a big fat baby. It’s sad. If he were my coach I’d be embarrassed.
————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
The fact that he had Thornton and Campbell out there for the last seconds of the game speaks volumes about him.
Julien looks like Bill from King of The Hill….
Number one thing that has changed is they are passing the puck better and picking up the pass. Its far from excellent but a big improvement When Markov gets back watch out for the PP and the D will be the best in the league. This team is starting to look like the team we thought it would be. Biggest issue now what do you do with Gomez there is no place for him on this team.
leave him up in the press box!!!!!!!! hes doing a great job up there now!!!!!!
What about that loaning him out to the team in Anchorage he played for during the lockout?
He could buy the team and houses for all the players- hell he could put a big down payment on Anchorage!

A douche?? Showing off your values??
Bah. Back under the bridge with ye
We are having fun now! One thing I do not like is playing Pleks on the PK, PP, and then his regular shift. It changes the play of Patches, Gionta and himself, to the point of their shift together is not very effective. But after saying that, he pots two tonight.
I agree… I think that will change. They have lots of days to work with the two Randys now.
I just hope this week off doesn’t kill any of our momentum that we have gained over the last three games!!!!!
On an unrelated note, there is no end to my hatred of Tootoo.
When Price grew his moustache for movember last year he played really well (if I remember correctly) so hopefully he will grow anothe one this year with the same results………
Why are you so jealous? We didn’t ask to be superior. I’ll leave you alone now so you can go take something that doesn’t belong to you.
Didn’t that montage remind you of CHerry and his expressions behind the bench?
It was Simpsonesque.

You can’t sit weber, Diaz, or spacek – these guys have been great.
that’s ok. guys’ll get banged-up – it’s a long season.

Spacek won’t last, if history is any indicator, someone on the back end will get hurt.
People agreeing with CBC on this don’t call yourself Hab fans.
I agreed with you up until the moment you typed THAT.
Maybe I should have said “People agreeing with CBC should rethink their loyalties as Hab fans.”
I didn’t watch the CBC piece because I watched RDS so maybe I shouldn’t even comment. But it appears like it was a nice smear job.
I’ve read some comments from the usual Hab haters in support of the CBC’s position. It’s what made me say it that way.
My instinct was to circle the wagons and protect my team not jump on the hate train.
Fair enough. Like I said, I definitely agree that the CBC took the wrong stance on this.
I appreciate it when you guys keep me on my toes. It tends to temper my perspective.
It’s like hearing your voice on a tape recording. You’re all like, “was that me who said that?”

CONGRATS TO THE TEAM…. practise well … I cant wait till the next game.
great game, but man, cammy looked off tonight. Eller is our Sundin (too early?). what do we do when gomez comes back?
Sorry, OT, you got it wrong. Cherry said post-game Cammy was the leader on this team.
Riiiiight. He had a subpar game despite picking up two assists.
But Cherry Knows Best (it’s a sitcom currently in development for syndication).
I can finally start to look at league standings in the morning and not freak out.

Nice game, happy with the whole team. Now five days without a game, what am I supposed to do at night (here in Europe), sleep? Damn it.
Btw: I guess we won´t read anything from RetroMikey and the other idiots here tonight.
Price is still serving up pies even when he wins. That’s gotta stop.

When Gandhi Gauthier and Mohandas Martin took over from Bob ‘BGL’ Gainey things went from bad to wuss.
Next game should be great, Ottawa is playing awesome comeback hockey but Price is better than all their 3 goalies in at the same time! GO HABS GO!!!! Nothing feels better than beating Boston 2 in a row!
PK
GO HABS GO!
nice post, solo

Agreed Surrey, he’s just like the Big M.
Cole has bits of Mike Mcphee & Murray Wilson (wide leg stance) when he goes to the outside of a dman……..
I am impressed with how quick he gets up to top speed.
Yes sir he does but I think he has a little more speed though.
@jimlaplante
Big M wasn’t such a bruiser. Of course the game was less crash and bang then. He was also more of a finesse and proficient goal scorer.

You nailed the comparison. I didnt see Frank Mahvolich play a lot, I was a ‘brand new Canuck in 1969, but based ob little I saw and reels etc.. right on!
More like the Little M.
Nice game boys.
I dislike him.
Vigneault was the one I felt bad for.
I felt bad for both. Those were BAAAD years for fans, man.
He won the cup 4 months ago. he be around for the balance of this year.
The Bruin players are still dining out on the Cup win.
Julien didn’t forget how to coach over the summer.

Not so sure Neely hated Julien all along, if they lose much more soon, he will be toast.
Discomfiture, nice word.
Now all we need is for the Leafs to come back to earth so I don’t have to skip over so much of SportsCentre, I’m wearing out my remote button.

It’s in his contract and it’s common knowledge.
Hate to say it but the entire rest of the world have an identity of saying how incredibly superior to americans they are lmao

Canadians’ unique identity is nothing more than a superiority complex over Americans? You are laughable. And insufferable, as well.
But politically Canadians are vastly different to the core.
http://twitter.com/andrewberkshire
Talks about insufferably self-righteous …
I wonder if Chicago would trade Hossa for Gomez…

Well I have no idea how removing Pearn caused this but along with creating a real 4th line the team is playing much better. Have to believe watching Blunden give his all is infectious, we see Moen stand up to Thornton etc..
Well played game overall.
Wonder what or who the moronic Jack Edwards is blaming?
… the fans of the Boston Bruins now have lost forever any right to complain that “the league” is out to get their team, and that the Montreal Canadiens have some kind of pull inside the NHL home office.

Yes, undefeated, but a classless move by the Habs according to the guys on the hotstove and to players and GM’s around the League. I didn’t know that the habs had to get permission from the other 29 teams before making a decision on what to do with regards to their coaching.
