This summer was a time of heady optimism for a typical Canadiens fans. Visions of a strong, committed team, with a younger upgraded defence and a forward corps enhanced with the judicious addition of speedy, hulking, invincible Erik Cole and subtraction of a somnambulant Benoit Pouliot danced in our heads.
Then the season started, and the nightmare hit. Carey Price was revealed as something less than the personification of the Great Wall of China. Our youngsters on defence weren’t NHL-ready and the veterans looked old and slow. Stalwarts PK Subban and Josh Gorges tried to do too much to compensate, and they committed crucial blunders. Our forwards lived down to their reputation of being too small and soft. The snipers looked like journeyman 20 goal scorers at best. Erik Cole was a money-pit who would kill our cap for four years. Andrei Markov’s knee was septic spaghetti.
It seemingly only took a management reshuffling for the nightmare to end. Assigning Mr. Pearn’s responsibilities to Mr. Ladouceur and Mr. Cunneyworth, and placing both behind the bench with a mission to provide verbal, enthusiastic direction and correction to the players seemed to tilt the ice our way. Pucks that used to hit the post or aggrandize Jacob Markstrom now find the corner mesh; Raphaël Diaz and Yannick Weber are effective and improve every game; Jaro Spacek seems rejuvenated; Erik Cole, Andrei Kostitsyn, Max Pacioretty and Travis Moen (!) are too much for opposing defencemen to handle. Carey Price is back to his usual unflappable self. David Desharnais plays like Scott Gomez should. Brian Gionta’s snakebitten, Réjean Houle-Chris Higgins impersonation is currently humourous instead of dolorous. Lars Eller finally scores his first goal, after showing flashes of much-needed skill and strength during his trial-by-fire, for-keeps training camp.
Now comes a five day break until the next game, to solidify the confidence and goodwill within the dressing room. Andrei Markov returns to Montreal with a clean bill of health from his doctors and is set to resume on-ice training. GM Pierre Gauthier has slipped the team doctors a twenty, and they will be exquisitely careful with Mr. Gomez’s shoulder treatment and rehab plan, with a resultant projected return to the lineup on February 31st.

The word on Markov is that his knee is OK. He has some pain a while back and got spooked so they sent him down to Florida to test it. Apparently they ran him through the ringer and placed a whole bunch of pressure on it to prove to him that it’s good to go. Markov really wants to finish his 3 years healthy and just doesn’t want to get injured again. Make of it what you will. He wont rush back so when he comes back he should be 100%. With the new JM who knows what happens too. Maybe Ladouceur only plays him 15-18 minutes per game rather than lean on him for 25 at first.
It’s like we’ve entered a parallel Habs universe the last few days..

Once again Moen is huge in the win. Protects Eller, sets up a breakaway and is a goal short of the Gordie Howe Hat Trick I predicted.

I’m overjoyed with Mr. Moen’s showing this season. I posted often this summer that he’s not a first-liner, but he seems determined to make me reconsider. I think this is a result of the addition of Erik Cole and the return of Max Pacioretty to the lineup, with these two it relieves the pressure on him and Andrei Kostitsyn to try to be who they are not meant to be. All four of them complement each other and make each other better, and give opposing coaches and defencemen a headache in trying to figure out who to cover.

…quite a conundrum of decisions not far away …especially on D …just exactly will be the difference Markov makes to Our D …He has not played hard minutes for almost 2 years …He will be playing on a questionable problematic knee …In Subban, Gorges, Gill, Spacek, Diaz, Weber (and even Emelin) We have a blend of D, though not Bad Ass Goliaths, play with exceptional speed, skating ability (Gill excepted), intelligence and offensive potential …that negates lack of size (speed & smarts KILL !)

Markov gives you 25 minutes of mistake-free hockey, solid defense, a good transition pass, and offensive creativity. I think he is missed.
Good point about the long layoff and the knee, but lots of players have come back from similar surgeries and been fine.

Of course it would be. No need for time to tell… time has been telling us this since he was drafted 13 years ago. We’re better with him.
No question that we miss Andrei Markov, he’s our best defenceman. What the recent spate of success does is it reduces the pressure to rely on him too much as soon as he’s back. In three to four weeks when he plays again (fingers crossed), we can baby him back into the lineup, with 10-12, 15 minutes of ice time max, playing him against the opposition third line (not fourth, don’t want him around crashers and bangers) and second-wave powerplay. We then gradually increase his minutes according to a rigid plan arrived at in consultation with the doctors and physios, as opposed to game necessities, kind of like a pitch count for a pitcher off Tommy John surgery.
The time also will come to put Mr. Gill and Spacek on a rotation, where they are healthy scratches to rest up in preparation for a playoff run. The Three Amigos can also be on a rotation, with Mr. Weber, Diaz and Emelin skipping roughly one game out of three. One defenceman shouldn’t be the odd man out every game, and especially not Alexei Emelin, who brings a skillset to the group that is lacking. I restate my contention that Mr. Emelin should be played over Mr. Spacek, but I understand that with the Seat of Heat Mr. Martin is on, he will play the absolute best roster he thinks he can ice to restart the team and save the season and his job.

Oh and i never thought i’d say this but Spacek in the lineup has really settled our D down the guy also blocked 7 shots tonight!!!!!!!!
ERIC COLE was such a Monster. Hardest working player for us all season. NOw that hes getting the minutes and PP , you see everything working. This guy creates so many chances driving the net, and neutral ice speed is amazing. Love this guy.
Next with MArkov Back, and our PP at full force, All we need to do is create penalties, and stay out the box, and with our man PRICE and SUBBAN, We Are headed to LORD STANLEY.

Number one thing that has changed is they are passing the puck better and picking up the pass. Its far from excellent but a big improvement When Markov gets back watch out for the PP and the D will be the best in the league. This team is starting to look like the team we thought it would be. Biggest issue now what do you do with Gomez there is no place for him on this team.

We are having fun now! One thing I do not like is playing Pleks on the PK, PP, and then his regular shift. It changes the play of Patches, Gionta and himself, to the point of their shift together is not very effective. But after saying that, he pots two tonight.
I agree… I think that will change. They have lots of days to work with the two Randys now.
I just hope this week off doesn’t kill any of our momentum that we have gained over the last three games!!!!!
On an unrelated note, there is no end to my hatred of Tootoo.
When Price grew his moustache for movember last year he played really well (if I remember correctly) so hopefully he will grow anothe one this year with the same results………

Three solid periods of hockey from the Habs. (Also, three solid goalposts, but who’s countin’?)
Really disciplined on the D-zone puck possession and unwillin’ to simply dump it out to relieve pressure from the Br00nz forecheck. Earlier in the season, stickin’ to this plan was killin’ the Habs. Only change on this front was Pearn out and Ladouceur in. Maybe there’s actually somethin’ to it rather than all this scapegoat hyperventilation.
Translates into less turnovers and quality scorin’ chances on Price and a relatively seamless and threatenin’ transition game.
The rest follows from that, cause the ice tilts down to the Br00nz end and the Habs are skatin’ around a slow D and can risk a more aggressive forecheck. Chara looks kinda ashen and sick. The rest of the D-corps sags in the absence of his A-game.
Julien had them out hard to try and take it back in the third. Carey Price, baby!

Emelin will (may) be back in the lineup when The Habs lose that is usually the philosophy used by most teams when moving players in or out of the lineup or goalie changes………
The CBC are way off base with this calling the Pearn replacement lacking class.
Pearn was a video man. He would look at the tapes and want to talk about them the next day after they were studied. Apparently there was a rift between him and Muller in terms of style. The disagreement was with involving the making the transitions during the game as opposed to during practice.
Ladouceur is also an ex-defense man.
What a load of crap for the CBC to try and slander the Habs that way.
The Habs are to its fans the way a family member is, like a parent or a child. You may be critical with them or show them tough love but if somebody else slanders them you come to their defense unconditionally.

Pearn leaned on Muller last year for implementation and communication. This year he was lost without it, and the team was in a funk. With two many men on the ice and confusion on and off the bench. Right call was made.

Let me admit that I was starting to lose confidence in JM when I saw the team play listlessly against Calgary and one game against Toronto, when losses were piling up, and that I thought he had lost the room when Price was letting in goals, he called out Erik Cole in public and certain vets seemed to be quite slow at picking up assignments.
Well, I was wrong. He hasn’t lost the toom and his “system”, the subject of so much criticism, has allowed inexperienced defensemen to play competitively, and forwards to score. I know we’ll lose games and probably have several losses in a row at some point. But the team is trying, and hasn’t quit and doesn’t look it’s going to any time soon. And that’s what I’ll remember when we do have several losses in a row.
I’ll also say I was unconvinced Bugs’ boy DD could play center in the NHL. Well, DD is proving me wrong. I’d be thrilled if he keeps proving me wrong. The kids are all right. It’s some of the vets (you know who they are) that need to pick up their games from where they are now. I think they will, though — peer pressure will make them.

Begining or ending your arguments based on country of orgin gives you a lifetime membership to the Don Cherry fan club. Like Chorske I live in South Florida but also was there to bus folks to the demonstration in support of Canadian federalism. No lessons in Canadian or American civility required.

We have a team that was floundering badly, the GM makes a move and they all treat him as some sort of leper. I am NOT a PG fan but fair is fair! He gave one of his most detailed and revealing explanations of why he made the move. When last did you basically hear a GM come right out and admit he (went against his coach) had to ‘convince’ his coach on the need for the change. PG was very forthright in that press conference. He should have been given more credit for it.

I absolutely think Canadians have their own identity, and I am proud of that identity. But in terms of values, and fundamental social mores, compared on the planetary scale? We’re twins. Conjoined twins.

Thanks for the support. I love my country, and I also love where I am living. I am not blind to its faults– but too many Canadians whistle past the graveyard. You want true conservatism? Go to rural New Brunswick. Or Alberta. Or talk to some of the nobs in the mucho dinero seats at the Bell Centre. THAT is where you will find conservatives. Heck, I’m in the deep south and all of my neighbors are hippies, or gay, or inveterate potheads and live-and-let-live beach bums. I too love Canada (and am proud to stay here), but being an immigant I get a bit of distance, and notice all the arrogance and simple-mindedness of Canadians toward Americans–whom they are almost identical to!
I assume you are from Vancouver, and with that perspective, I think that what you say is true. Here though, it’s hard to draw the same similarities on things outside of hockey.
I can though probably relate to Americans about as much as I can to you outside of Quebec, although that isn’t saying much. Obviously I’d rather not be associated with either country, but that is another discussion.

What did CBC say? I thought Plekanec was the best skater on either team, and obviously Price had a big game.
Eller was involved in the play the whole night. A very up and down game for him but you noticed him every damned shift. Could have easily had 3 goals, was a monster on the boards. Was everywhere. Bad giveaway leading to the first Boston goal. I thought the penalty call on him was beyond weak. Campbell or whoever it was just skated over his stick.
Nice confidence builder to pt the kid out for big minutes in the third. Maybe the deuxieme etoile a bit of the same?
