Liveblog: Islanders 4 – Canadiens 3 in OT

Trap

The Canadiens managed to blow leads of 2-0 and 3-1.
Frans Nielsen tied the game with the only goal of the third period.
Then, after the Canadiens had some chances in the early part of OT, John Tavares started a three-way passing play that left defenceman Thomas Hickey wide open to Carey Price’s left for the goal that won a strange game.

It was the first goal of Hickey’s career.

The Islanders clicked on two of three power plays, both goals scored by Matt Moulson.

Max Pacioretty had two goals for the Canadiens, who got an early one from Travis Moen.

With the Canadiens nursing a 3-2 lead, Frans Nielsen scored halfway through the third period to set up OT.

The Canadiens outshot the visitors 33-25.

So for only the fourth time this season, the Bell Centre crowd goes home grumbling.

Unbeaten in 6. I’ll take it. Win or lose, need an energy game against the Rangers.

Actually screw that. Snoozefest or not, let’s beat Torts again

  4. Ian Cobb says:

Very glad that I missed the first two periods, if they were anything like the 3rd.!!!.

That was the most disgusting 20 min of garbage hockey that they have played all year, including the Toronto blow out!!

Fumble, bumble and stumble their way through! Therrien should hold a 3 hour practice once the rink empties.
Was that our true colors tonight????

    • boing007 says:

You missed their best period, the first. Got too smug and satisfied, then let the game slip away from them.

No, they thoroughly dominated the 1st, the morons were singing that stupid “ole ole” song…

They should escort fans singing the ole song before the last minute of the third period to the exits immediately. If you’re stupid you shouldn’t get to stay and watch. Nothing cues a visitors comeback/Habs collapse faster than the ole song sung prematurely!

      • chemic says:

they should bann that song instad of the triple low five

Did Eller play like an N. H. Eller tonight?

As soon as this team gets a losing streak Cole is gonna start hearing it from everyone. He REALLY needs to get going

  7. The Jackal says:

This will get buried in the negative posts that follow losses, but what the hell!

We played a good game in the first, obviously, and got smoked by their PP, which was hot.
The boys stopped working – got over-confident or thought too much about not blowing the lead and the streak, and they stopped doing the things that work for them.
The team has been quite good, and we know they can score goals. Price had no chance on those goals and the D left him out to dry – I think one of our problems is we lose focus and leave a man open, and boom.
The team can’t stop skating and playing their game, once they start getting lazy or complacent or suckered into playing a different style, then they lose sight of what makes them successful.
They will definitely learn from this and come back strong.

One thing that was terrible was the refs, again!
They let the Craplanders back in the game with momentum sapping PP’s on crap calls, then missed a couple of blatant penalties. The NHL reffing is absolute crap – it is too inconsistent and one thing that is apparent is that they put the whistles away when the game is closing – how stupid is that? A penalty is a penalty, be consistent.

Lastly, 11 out of 12 possible points, I will take that!
A new streak begins on Saturday, consecutive games with a point. Let’s go!

    • piper says:

This is to me is the worst year for poor reffing that i’ve seen in 40+ years.

      • kempie says:

Yep, it’s really bad every night. You know it’s bad when there are games where it actually helps the Habs.

        • NCRhabsfan says:

Unfortunately any comment on refereeing after a loss is immediately discounted as whining. The truth is the refereeing in the NHL has been epically bad for years and is getting worse, not better. It is the most unprofessional part of the NHL and will hold the league back until someone finally admits there is a problem and sets about fixing it. That means it will only get worse until someone finally makes Mr Bettman go away.

    • crabvader says:

3 things are actually certain! Death, taxes and horrible officiating!

Best just to try not to think about it.

  9. Peter Young says:

Can the Canadiens take first place in the East? No. But I like this team and the Canadiens played some lovely hockey in that overtime period. Even the great Canadiens teams of the 1950s would lose occasionally to the bottom dwellers, often the Hawks and Rangers in those days.

  10. duffy says:

Very lucky to come away with a point. Seems whole team became very lazy after the second period.

  11. The Teacher says:

In response the the “bag skate” guy. I’d give the team another day off. They sure looked tired out there. And the long segment of away games coming up.

  12. chanchilla says:

i can shoot a puck harder than cole did all game. This is the first game where i’ve actually been full out frustrated with him.. He’s not even trying out there.

  13. Steven says:

Let’s not doom and gloom just yet.

The 3rd period to me is what sunk our boys, but they played a pretty decent game. The silver lining is that they came out of this one with a point and even with a NJ win tonight, Habs are still sitting in 1st. If you have to lose in this league, especially with the truncated season, you have to get a point with your loss, and that’s what they did.

Hard to swallow, but not as bad as that. Move on, and get ready for the Rangers.

    • piper says:

I thought they were bad in the second too. missed the first

    • crabvader says:

These are the games, especially in a condensed schedule, that need to be won. Someone pointed out earlier that we are in a tie for first with NJ and we got a few good teams behind us by only a game.

Just saying… remember this one if we’re struggling for 8th at the end, even though I sure hope it doesn’t come to that. I think we can finish top 5 but we need consistency throughout 60 minutes of play. Everyone wants to say we’re a tired little team but I’ve watched the Hawks play three straight games to start the season and win them all, they have yet to lose in regulation and for the most part, give it 100% the entire game, save for a few close shaves.

Sure, they are a great team, but damn it if we aren’t great aswell. We’ve shown signs of it day in and day out so far. We can’t afford to pack in games like this in a season that only lasts half the length of a regular one. Everyone point counts. I’m glad we came away with a point because we could’ve easily finished empty-handed.

There’s just no trial and error period this year.

  14. piper says:

Saturday will be another tough one. Nash will probably be back.

  15. Dr.Rex says:

We missed Gallagher’s energy in the third for sure.

They stopped playing with 4 mins left in the 2nd. The Isles were ready to mail this one in but we convinced them to keep playing with the penalty late in the 2nd.

  16. Chrisadiens says:

I missed the game. My DVR recorded some tennis match instead of the hockey game. Grrr. Seems like Patches is on one of his scoring streaks which is great news. Habs got a point, that’s great. Now let’s beat that “bad” Rangers team on Saturday.

  17. sCOTT1243 says:

I’ll give them a pass tonight…1 point, I’ll take it.

    Get some rest boys.

  18. habs001 says:

When the games have the intensity level like the Ranger game the Habs are okay..but when the games have the intensity like last nights Penguins/Flyer especially in the playoffs the Habs d will be in deep trouble…Looks like all the wear and tear on Gion is catching up…the 4 on 3 pp should have had Markov with PK..DD and Maxpac

  19. BrownHabFan says:

Nabakov definatly stole this game for the islanders had it not been for him this game could have gotten out of hand quick and fast….that being said I’d like the refs to share the crack they were smoking during this game because I wish I could get that high and retarded to miss and blow as many of those obvious calls they did…Habs seemed to sit back…Gionta got way too much ice time and lets be realistic…he’s a great leader but he is no game changer that’s for sure…Anyhoo bring on the rangers

Any question of this team having elite status has just been answered. We’re lucky to get a point.

  22. Boomer says:

too bad too it didn’t go the distance, gotta favor MTL in a shootout when Nabokov is in net

  23. habstrinifan says:

Bummar! But just means we’ll be keyed up Sat.

  24. crabvader says:

Habs packed this one in before the 3rd ever even got started. I really think Therrien should consider keeping Cole in the press box next game… His play was down and out all game long and for as long as we’ve seen this year. Completely uninspired play by him, doesn’t win battles down low, doesn’t win body position when skating in… a heel for lack of better words. This was a sickening game to watch, and trust me, I’ve got the flu! I feel like my recovery date has been pushed back a few days just because of this game alone. Tonight, our guys showed the same lack of interest they did against the Rags and it cost them against a team that should be a footnote to a footnote. A tale of Jekyl and Hyde… Everyone must’ve collectively agreed to give the game to the hapless Isles. These are the types of games where I truly feel for everyone besides me who I know truly care about this team and have to stand idly by and watch them play like they don’t give a damn for 20-40 minutes.

All I have to say I’m hoping for tomorrow morning: BAG SKATE.

    • Mattyleg says:

I didn’t read most of your comment because it’s unreadable.
      Use paragraphs and line breaks.

But I read your last line; a Bag Skate is a fantastic idea for a team that has played 4 games in 6 days and has another on Saturday.

I saw a lot of tired legs out there tonight. Four shots in the third period after 14 in each of the first two pretty much says it all.

Gotta be happy with 11 points out of 12. Still first in the east.
Would LOVE a win vs Rangers Saturday night when I’m back visiting Montreal for the weekend. McKibbins West Island here I come.

  31. HABSsince92 says:

    2 things…….

    1. The PK was bad tonight…..why not put Subban and the Cube out there for a shift?

    2. The only PP goal scored for the Habs tonight was in the 1st period with Cole-DD-Pac and PK-Cube on the ice yet for the rest of the game they were never out on the PP together. Why?

  34. slapshot777 says:

Habs got the dreaded two goal lead and with the way they played in the first, they thought it as going to be a easy night and coasted the rest of the game and it cost them. They got lucky to even get a point tonight. The only line that really stood out and played well was the Cole-Deshardnais-Pacs line. The rest of the team looked tired after the first.

A lot of tired legs. Markov seems gassed.

If we only had another younger puck moving dman who could eat up some tough minutes and man the point on the pp. It would be perfect if he was a right handed shot and a good skater. Aaaah, we can only dream and wish for such a thing right Therrien?
