Liveblog: The Lars Eller Show

jk11 1126 habs penguins 3rd 0658

The young centre explodes with a four-goal effort, including a spectacular penalty shot.
In one game, Eller doubled his season goal output.
And your Montreal Canadiens begin 2012 in spectacular fashion.

Leading 3-2 as the third period began, the Canadiens scored three times in 41 seconds to chase Ondrej Pavelec and turn a tight game into a rout..

Needless to say, seven goals was a season-high for the Canadiens.

    WRONGFUL DISMISSAL?

The firing of Jacques martin was a logical move, only problem was that it came too late. It should have happened at the end of last year.

The wrongful dismissal is that of one Mr. Louis Leblanc.

Imagine that YOU are more productive, significantly more effective, dramatically more motivated, and unquestionably put in more effort at your job, than someone else in your company that makes 10 times your salary, and YOU got fired or demoted .

Scott Gomez has played 196 minutes of hockey this year with the same team, in the same league, that Louis Leblanc has played 138 minutes.

While Gomez, has been on the ice the team has scored 8 times
(an average of one team GF for every 24.5 minutes . The team has allowed 10 goals during that span ( an average of 1 GA every 19 minutes . ( 37 of Gomez`s 196 minutes – almost 20%- has been while his team has a man advantage.

Leblanc has been on the ice for 3 team GA`s (an average of 1 goal scored against for every 46 minutes. Thats more than twice as effective as Gomez)

Offensively, with zero power play minutes, Leblanc has been , on average, on the ice for 28 minutes per team goal scored.

Considering that Gomez rate of 1 GF per 24.5 minutes of ice time occurred with 20% of his playing time on the PP, and he has been playing with significantly more productive linemates, I would say that (if Gomez were to play another game in Montreal while Leblanc is in the minors) there is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a travesty of justice. being committed….. a truly wrongful dismissal.

    Grounds for firing the GM?

    What do you all think?

    Coming soon ………Fire the GM!

    happy New Year to All!

    Congrats to Lars Eller!

LL will be back, he can always use some large ice time and point production in the minors for a half dozen games. I remember in the 70′s when a certain ‘Big Bird’ went down for a little ‘confidence building’ before coming back to the Habs for a storied career!

My man Lars is going to turn some heads before the season is done.

I am ashamed to say it, but tonight for probably the first time in my life I was hoping the Bruins would beat the Devils. Bruins 14 pts ahead seems possibly insurmountable but the Devils may be 1 of those teams we are fighting for a playoff spot if the boys make a run.

Amazes me that based on the majority of posts recently that a large percentage of you on here want this team to tank, yet when the team wins a game like this there is an average of 2 or 3 posts per minute of happy fans.

they played good tonight – if we had 8 more players like cole – we’d be in 1st place in the league.

  9. aj says:

I also noticed that this is the first goal (for quite a while in 56 games) that Tomas Kaberle did in a game this season. Ironically, the last game that he scored was against the Habs. Plus, it was with the Eller line he got that pass from and it was Moen who gave the puck for him to shoot it.

  10. Sharks9 says:

Louis Leblanc just got sent back to Hamilton.

    25 before 14

    • aj says:

If only Habs fans can make a petition right now to send Gomez to Hamilton instead of Leblanc, I’ll agree to sign-up for that.

    • podbay says:

He’ll continue to get better, and he’ll be back, probably sooner than we think.

      • aj says:

LL already got already much development since his stint with the Juniors last yr at the LHJMQ.

The only players I think will need development and should be sent to Hamilton are the guys playing right now at the WJC: Gallagher, Bournival, Bealieu, and Tinordi.

    • habs-fan-84 says:

he got a taste of the big league’s and he’ll go back to Hamilton like his hair is on fire. Hopefully he’s lights out; in a similar fashion to when Max-Pac was sent back down 2 yrs. ago.

I love Eller’s 3rd goal. The smile on his face mirrored mine watching it unfold. What a play by Brother Andrei! What a play!

A great effort all around and a big tip of the hat for Big Trav who is having a great season.

Congrats to Larry and the rest of the boys.

    Great game.
We fans needed that. Whoooooooooooboy, did we need that.
Before he started scoring, I turned to my buddy and said “Man, Eller looks good tonight!”
Metro-ing home, missed the 3-minute onslaught. Bummer. Turned on my iPhone radio as soon as I got out of the metro to hear the end of the standing O.
    Nice.

I’m off to bed, wishing you sweet dreams of scoring hat-tricks and spin-o-rama penalty shots in La Flanelle!!

  14. JF says:

The most fun game of the season so far. We should all savour it, even twice over by watching Canadiens Express, because most things about it are not likely to be repeated – a Hab scores 4 goals in a game; the team explodes for 3 goals in under a minute; a Hab scores on a penalty shot with a beautiful, creative move. Let’s have more of these exciting, explosive third periods. They sure beat the usual tense, nail-biting, depressing affairs we have to sit through. If this is Randy Cunneyworth hockey, I like it.

  15. habs-fan-84 says:

We’ve (the team) been lucky this past week that the boys have had some time off to contemplate. More importantly, it has finally given RC some time to implement his style. As much as I’d like to see the boys play tomorrow and keep this going, I’d rather RC get in a couple more practices before Saturday to continue to develop and iron out his approach. Hopefully we’ll see another fight in practice tomorrow ;)

  16. habaholic68NJ says:

Two thumbs up for RC for a great job of coaching tonight and starting to make the team transition out of the brutal 0-0-5 System of JM. Keep it up Randy. Win or lose, watching an aggressive two man forecheck with pucks and bodies going straight to the night is a lot more fun to watch than what we have witnessed the past couple of years.

Twice in this game, I jumped out of my seat yelling WOO, a reaction I have not had to a goal in years. AK46′s unreal set up and the Eller-copter.

As for Eller, I could not be happier for the kid and what a confidence builder.

Of course, JM used the same shooters game in and out.

Why? He put it into his engraved in stone game plan last August 2010.

What does the Commissioner of the NHL do?

In short, a league commissioner is the action man for the Board of Governors.

They tell him what they want done and he works to make it happen through his subordinates while making sure that individual franchises play by the rules.

******** Translated if you haven’t won the Stanley Cup in 40 years your NHL team is becoming irrelevant in a sports mad city long behind MLB, NFL and NBA teams, you just tell the commissioner(who you gave a new contract at 7 plus million per) to make it happen and the rules are bent sufficiently to action the command.

    • athanor says:

They’ve used eight people in the shootout all season, none of them named Eller, or Kostitsyn.

Gionta has two (2 for 4), Desharnais (1-3) and MaxPac (1-5), and Moen, Subban, Cole, Pleks and Cammy with none in eight chances among them.

  21. roady says:

1,186 of ppl on here have a weird opinion on or are back peddlin on the firing of Martin….u think Eller gets 4g or the Habs score 7g with Jacques runnin’ the sho, all I hope is that they get 72, 51, and 67 back together and keep Plekanac on the 3rd line where he belongs behind Eller and Davey…ya man !!

take your drink to the end of the bar buddy…come on now, don’t be a fool…

    • HardHabits says:

If Gomez is your 4th line centre then you’re not doing too bad I figure. But yeah. I agree.

      • aj says:

Maybe this is the right time Mr Molson and Mr Gauthier consider Gomez to be sent to the minors. I don’t see him being used as often for the long stretch and if Cunneyworth can’t find a fit for him this season, they might as well buy him out of that contract.

        • roady says:

like fitting a square peg in a round hole…Gomez, he would fit in well with Phoenix …he has that dessert kind of a name…and he is a dog…ha !!

just watched Lars’ “First Star” performance, man did he ever ham it up.

    Good on ya kid!

  23. kempie says:

    Okie dokie, let’s see.

OMG, OMG Francine, Erik Cole OMG. He is officially my new mancrush. I may have to buy a 7 and a 2 for my flannel. Worst UFA signing of the summer right? My ass! This guy delivers the best bang for the buck if you ask me (not including Price, who is grossly underpaid ATM).

How many fanboiz (E1, Tony, I’m looking at you guys) are crying themselves to sleep in their J. Halak pyjamas tonight. Good on Larry for finally getting it over the line. Why they haven’t been going in for this guy, I have no idea, but he’s been playing really well (especially since the last Pearning) and the guy could use some confidence.

This team is not as bad as it looks. If the games were 40 minutes long, they’d kick ass. This makes things very frustrating on my membrane. If they sucked evenly over 60 minutes every night, that would be something different. But for 2 periods on most nights, this is a pretty good team.

And finally, I really want to cut RC some slack. He’s had very little time to get things implemented, and I like what he’s done so far. I’ll give him a few more games to get it together.

Nice game. A little surprised Pronger didn’t run onto the ice & steal the puck.

    • Everlasting1 says:

Crying? Fanboi? Far removed from those sentiments. Reality check – It was one win. The Habs are tied for 12th with the Bolts who have 2 games at hand.

    LARS STELLER ELLER!!!! Congrats Kid!

  27. aj says:

Damn, about friggin time these guys act and Man Up!!

I haven’t had this feeling of being happy with the Canadiens since they got an 8-1 victory against the Minnesota wild on 03/20/2011. The last person who got a hat trick for the Habs was PK Subban and that was in that game.

Congrats for Lars Eller getting that hat trick.

I like the way Cunneyworth made this team do some big gritty forechecks to the opposition. It was effective and I hope they continue to be this aggressive style of play for the remaining half of this season.

  28. JayBee says:

Applause all around for tonight’s win.

  29. ProHabs says:

Trade AK now, while the value is very high.

    • aj says:

are you kidding? it was AK46′s assists along w/ Moen’s that made Eller get that hat trick and I think this trio will click.

If we see progression for this line within the next few more games, we now have 2 lines that will work for the Habs:

      Cole-Pacioretty-Desharnais
      Moen-Eller-Kostitsyn

    • showey47 says:

I’d prefer to see him get a contract extension since we could use a winger with size and hands. Also has great chemistry with eller.

    • JF says:

      You mean sign AK now.

      • aj says:

They’d better be signing AK now. If Gauthier wants to save his ass again like what he did for Gorges, I believe this is a golden opportunity to sign both him and Eller for long term.

  30. Chuck says:

They should have shown a sense of humour and given Eller the silent treatment as he skated past the bench after the penalty shot.

  31. nova scotia vees says:

Happy for Eller…but, two of the goals were gimme’s. Loved his creativity on the shoot-out goal. If we would only encourage more of this type of play….dare to be different….we could get more out of our truly talented players. We have stifled players with any flair to their game for far too long.
BTW…Belliveau’s quote was about Yvon Lambert…not Cournoyer.
HALAK…Yeah, I still miss him and wish you Price-lovers would stop dissing Halak. I will always be thankful to him for the thrills he gave me and all true Habs fans, two years ago.

  33. G-Man says:

Great game by Eller, AK and Moen. It’s been one helluva long time since a young Hab forward had a breakout night like this. Let’s hope Eller and AK and Moen use it as a springboard to greater things.

  34. habs001 says:

The fans really deserved this game after the season so far…to go on a winning streak the team will have to start scoring on the pp otherwise its more 500 type hockey…

  35. JohnBellyful says:

And to think I wrote in my diary just yesterday:

Trying to keep my spirits up and stay positive but it’s getting harder and harder with this team. I still see the glass half-full … but with arsenic.

Well, thank you Lars, AK and Moen for a wonderful third period, and the rest of the team for a great win. One game does not a streak make, but you’re out of the starting blocks for 2012.
    Woohoo!

  36. HardHabits says:

Habs will still have to bury Gomez’s contract at some point and try to trade one or two of Cammy, Gio, Markov or Kaberle if they want to sign some of the pending UFA’s and RFA’s over the summer and improve this team.

  37. savethepuck says:

gotta admit when the Jets made it 3-2 I said to myself oh crap( I actually said something worse) deja vu. Glad the boys showed some of what I know this team has in the 3rd. Can’t be prouder of Lars, always liked the kid, knew he had skills( which the penalty shot showed ), hope it’s a coming out party giving him confidence for things to come. His first goal was all him, he created the turnover and finished it, the other two were all AK, great chemistry between those 2 but usually it’s Lars setting up AK. Unfortunate AK didn’t get an assist on the penalty shot goal by Lars because he’s the one who made the great pass to spring Lars into that breakaway. the only thing better would of been if he did this against St. Louis but that’s next Tuesday.

Eller now has as many goals as Cami and Pleks, both these guys need to take a long hard look in the mirror at themselves and wonder if they are really worth the 5 million or so .

  40. Habsbill24 says:

Does anybody know the name of the goal song? It is an old one brought back and much better than what they were playing.

  41. Psycho29 says:

  42. HabinBurlington says:
