Liveblog: Canadiens sign Colby Armstrong, Francis Bouillon, Brandon Prust

Colby Armstrong, bought out by the Leafs, has signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens for $1 million.
Rugged Rangers forward Brandon Prust has signed a four-year deal with the Canadiens for $10 million.

And Francis Bouillon, a Michel Therrien favourite, is coming home to Montreal to shore up the defence corps.

The signings don’t put a huge dent dent in the Canadiens’ salary cap: Armstrong, one season for $1 million (the Leafs are still on the hook for another $1 million with his buyout); Frankie the Bull, one year for $1.5 million; Prust gets $3 million the first year, followed by two seasons at $2.5 million, then a final year at $2 million..

•  •  •

The D: Gorges, P.K., Markov, Emelin, Bouillon – plus Kaberle, Diaz, Weber, St. Denis.

Not the 1976 Canadiens, but there are worse defence corps in the league (hello, Leafs!)

•  •  •

Armstrong has injury issues. Sprained ankle and a concussion last season.

But he’s a lifelong Canadiens fan who says signing is “a dream come true”.

The Gordie Howe Rule: You can NEVER have too many players from Saskatchewan.

Canadiens have two: Moen and Armstrong.

Former Armstrong Penguins teammate on Twitter: Congrats to @armdog for his signing avec les Canadiens ! He will fit great there! #salut! #bestteamguy

Forwards with sand? Check.

Lack of depth at LW? Check.

Rugged Dman? Check.

D needs size and mobility and they sign Bouillon?

    frankie boullion!?

    1 yr deal

  4. JUST ME says:

Not much happening as it was to be expected. Armstrong is a wild guess for one year . Not to many risks . A bit sad that Staubitz is gone since expectations should be reasonnable, he could have brought a bit more spunk in some games.
Will have a transition year with higher expectations than last season with hopefully less injuries and underachievers.

We may see Gallagher in the lineup altough i think that Bergevin may not be the kind of G.M. to go all in and i would rather wait and make sure they get all the ici time and development necessary instead of burning them up in the NHL.

    Go habs go !

  5. aj says:

It looks like the Habs are playing safe by acquiring players on a 1yr contract offer.

If push comes to shove, probably a Jagr signing will suffice the lineup.

My source was correct yesterday about Bouillion signing in Montreal. I called that yesterday on here. This has Therriens fingerprints all over it.

NAsh offered 13 million / season for 3 years to play in canada

  11. EasternOntarioHabsFan says:

Pleasing scenario for next season: Armstrong nails Lucic with a borderline hit, knocking him out cold.

Parros (if singed) cleans Thornton’s clock while Armstrong gets away clean.

Lucic is never the same again.

    (fingers crossed)

    Oh nice goal…

  26. neutral says:

If Armstrong stays healthy he’ll probably be the top scorer on the bottom six but don’t plan a stanley cup parade. MB filling in the Holes 1-mil per hole…. lets see what happens the rest of the way.

  27. Un Canadien errant says:

Okay, anytime now to sign a couple more guys to plug a hole in the forwards and on defence. Colby Armstrong already plugged one.

Let’s keep the kids in Hamilton for a season. Blake Geoffrion needs to work on his skating, Louis Leblanc needs to bulk up, the junior guys need a season to step up to the pro game.

They can all get a taste of the NHL with injury callups.

  28. Chris says:

There are few players I detest more than Colby Armstrong, who has been one of the most egregious head-hunters in recent seasons.

Can’t say I like ANY aspect of having that clown playing for the Montreal Canadiens.

  29. Habbu says:

Prust will go with anyone, even when he is outmatched size wise. His willingness to go with Lucic last spring was admirable; even though he got his clock cleaned. Man he took some shots; but stayed upright for most of it.

  30. habsfan0 says:

  31. TorontoHabsFan says:

Last year Montreal finished 20th in the league with 207 goals for. 86 or 41% of those goals came from one line.

Not sure how Armstrong or any of the names being bandied about here do a thing to address this.

  32. hockeyscout101 says:

Come on Parros…come to Montreal. Having both Prust and Parros on Montreal would really do us wonders!! I prefer Parros. Come on Montreal would welcome you with open arms.

please don’t tell me that anyone here thinks Armstrong takes care of the toughness issue on this team..he is not a fighter…causes a few of them to start but not taking care of business….so they let Staubby go and there he went, quickly…Prust, Parros, Brookbank…left otherwise, more of the same as last year.

  36. daveho29 says:

Game on, Go Engl…penalty shoot out loss again 🙁

  37. hockeyscout101 says:

We’ve got to sign Parros NOW DAMMIT!!!!!

    TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!!!!!!!

TIK TOK TIK TOK TIK TOK………………………..

  40. Hali_Hab says:

Prust is still out there and e can fight !! And play a shift saying Parros is our only option is foolish. Look at Prusts stats. Parros might be a little cheaper but Prust is the better player

  41. BobDobbs says:

We should sign the overall best players regardless of the language they speak, not sign lesser players just because they’re Quebecois. But we musn’t sign former Leafs!!!1

  42. Ghosts of the Forum says:

@boonie – not really viewing it as a demotion for Gio, more of a balancing of skill sets.

This team doesn’t have a bonafide number 1 line. Scoring by committee it must be. The one thing I agree with JM on was they needed a solid top 9.

    • boonie says:

I get that. But gionta has character and talent and leads best by example. Bourque should…… GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL… Drop down a line or two for balance.

  43. hockeyscout101 says:

Sheldon Brookbank would be ideal for the Habs as a 5th or 6th guy. Brookbank wouldn’t come that expensive either. I hope Therrien and Bergevin knows that they need a bit of sandpaper on the back end.

  44. alfieturcotte says:

I see no need for Armstrong – from, “has had trouble with injuries the past two years in Toronto with a list of ailments that included a broken nose, broken foot, tendon problem in a finger, concussion, badly sprained ankle and a bout with blurred vision and dizziness.”

Should have focused Latendresse, not Armstrong.

  45. EasternOntarioHabsFan says:

The big knock on Armstrong is that he can’t fight hardly at all.

The only option left is Parros, Brookabnk, and Scott

I say sign two of them

  46. Habs1996 says:

lol i can just keep dreaming

  47. Boomer says:

If Parros signs with us I’m making t-shirts with his face on it, tag on the back “who wants a mustache ride?”

Colby Armstrong, yuk!Get ready for another bout of “These team is so soft…I never seen team so soft…they make my job tuff I make their life pas bon”

    • Strummer says:

      Are you serious?
A 6′ 2″ Saskachewanian with offensive upside for $1 million for 1 year only is a bargain in this age of the cap.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

    • KenD29 says:

“I really get the impression they are trying to be the worst squad in the league”

Tonight we skate with them, Tonight is our night!

  51. commandant says:

Armstrong for 1 year at 1 million is low risk and allows us to not rush prospects who are not yet ready for the NHL like Louis Leblanc. Let him dominate the AHL.

Still need 1 dman and 1 top 6 LW.

  54. ABHabsfan says:

  55. hockeyscout101 says:

Glass to penguins. I guess we all know that Arron Asham is not coming back to the Pens. Asham would be another good addition for the Habs as a depth player for the 4th line.

The thing about Glass is he can’t fight. Loses almost every fight he gets into. Only had I think 3 fights last year for the Jets. I still remember when he was on the Nucks and he fought Carkner and got murdered.

  56. SuperHabFan says:

I believe Paros’s mustache is in the 1.1-1.3 million $ range

moens a saskatchawan boy, so is dr moulder

  58. habsfan0 says:

If the day ends without any of the so called big names signing..Ryan Suter, Zach Parise and Martin doesn’t augur very well for the CBA negotiations going very well and the season starting on time, IMHO. I believe GMs are shying away from landing the big one because of this.

    • Muckbringer says:

i was thinking about this earlier. doesnt make sense to hold cba negotiations after fa. how does mngmt know how much they have to spend?

  59. homerbowen says:

Sorry to see Brad off to ANU. As for Armstrong, ughhh, played for laffs so he’s tainted. Better get him a “beak” protector!!!!!

  60. hockeyscout101 says:

MB get the Parros deal done. He has offers from the Canadiens and 2-3 other teams. Get er done MB. Bring in the Stache!!

  61. Un Canadien errant says:

TSN has Andrei Kostitsyn listed as the 27th best available free agent, one rung above Benoit Pouliot.

    June 22: Alex Galchenyuk [x]
June 23: Stefan Matteau, Mike Matheson, Martin Frk, Brandon Whitney
    June 2429: Travis Moen [x]
    June 2627: Mathieu Darche
    June 26: Ryan White
    June 30: Alexei Emelin
July 1: P.A. Parenteau, Taylor Pyatt
    July 3: Shane O’Brien
    July 5: Carey Price
    July 9: P.K. Subban

  62. Ghosts of the Forum says:

    Patches – DD – Cole
    ? – Pleks – Bourque
    Armstrong – Eller – Gio
    Moen – White – ?

I’m skeptical about Bourque, but in his defense, he did come into a toxic situation, so feel he should get another shot to prove himself. LL or Gallagher might make a case for that spot on the second line.

Gio and Pleks haven’t shown much chemistry and probably best to spread out the size.

  65. slapshot777 says:

I don’t see TSN rushing to talk to Armstrong like they did the last time he signed with Toronto on July 1st.

  66. Hali_Hab says:

I would love Prust but Parros would be a nice runner up

  67. hockeyscout101 says:

I will just say this..if Bergevin does not replace the fighting ability of Staubitz (like Gainey and Gauthier did) and we go into the season with Moen and White again we will seriously have some issues. Enough of past G.M. and coaches (Martin) saying we prefer team toughness than an actual fighter. Please sign Parros!!!

    Perros would be tremendous!!!!

  69. Watching Souray go after Armstrong in the vid really makes me miss Sheldon. Guy was tough as f*ck.

  70. boonie says:

Armstrong. Yuck. Not only are we taking leaf castoffs, but we pair him and Moen on eller’s wings to mute his offensive potential.

    • Adam says:

It’s July and they’ve already decided the permanent lines for the whole season? Wow, talk about preparation!

      • boonie says:

Just assuming that dd is #1, plecs is #2′ that leaves eller at 3 and Armstrong ain’t a top 6 winger here. Cole, gionta, max and (arguably) bourque are ahead of him.

How do you see the lines?

  71. slapshot777 says:

Parros is not vegan is he?

  72. HabFanSince72 says:

    George Parros:

    * best porn stache in hockey.
    * they’ll love him in Park Ex
    * only 5 seasons removed from his 5 goal 10 point career high.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

  73. D Mex says:

The Staubitz signing makes Parros redundant in ANA.
Parros plays hockey at least as well as BGL, I don’t think he’d go from souvlaki to vegan on us and, best of all, it could be fun to watch him chase Lucic around the ice 😉

    ALWAYS Habs –
    D Mex

Perros would be a tremendous pick up !!
