Liveblog: Canadiens sign Colby Armstrong, Francis Bouillon, Brandon Prust

Armstrong

Colby Armstrong, bought out by the Leafs, has signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens for $1 million.
Rugged Rangers forward Brandon Prust has signed a four-year deal with the Canadiens for $10 million.

And Francis Bouillon, a Michel Therrien favourite, is coming home to Montreal to shore up the defence corps.

The signings don’t put a huge dent dent in the Canadiens’ salary cap: Armstrong, one season for $1 million (the Leafs are still on the hook for another $1 million with his buyout); Frankie the Bull, one year for $1.5 million; Prust gets $3 million the first year, followed by two seasons at $2.5 million, then a final year at $2 million..

•  •  •

The D: Gorges, P.K., Markov, Emelin, Bouillon – plus Kaberle, Diaz, Weber, St. Denis.

Not the 1976 Canadiens, but there are worse defence corps in the league (hello, Leafs!)

•  •  •

Armstrong has injury issues. Sprained ankle and a concussion last season.

But he’s a lifelong Canadiens fan who says signing is “a dream come true”.

The Gordie Howe Rule: You can NEVER have too many players from Saskatchewan.

Canadiens have two: Moen and Armstrong.

Former Armstrong Penguins teammate on Twitter: Congrats to @armdog for his signing avec les Canadiens ! He will fit great there! #salut! #bestteamguy

Forwards with sand? Check.

Lack of depth at LW? Check.

Rugged Dman? Check.

I agree with Boone, Armstrong is an upgrade from Staubitz in the pure hockey sense.

Plus he was a Habs fan as a kid so he obviously has good judgement ;)

Carlene now an Islander? I guess there was never a deal with the Avalanche.

  5. hockeyscout101 says:

Carkner signed with the Islanders. 3 year deal.

  6. Ron says:

I for one am not a fan of Armstrong no matter how cheap he comes. He was always a cheap shot artist with not much to back himself up with. Injury prone so he will add to the man games lost for the team. Although he does compete hard he gets carried away. He bleeds well when his ugly nose gets hit. Hope MB has some underlying use for him and not just MT requesting his presence.

    • habitual says:

Agreed. First questionable move from the new regieme.

      • Un Canadien errant says:

Don’t really know him all that well, and he is tainted by Leaf association, but Michel Therrien and Marc Bergevin know him well from the Pittsburgh days, so they might have a plan for him. 1 year contract doesn’t trigger the panic alarm for me.

        • 2mins4lookinsooogood says:

UCE, google his head shots … that’s what he was … remember the charge/boarding on Bergergon? Once the league clamped down on headshots/boarding he was no longer effective. Hopefully he and Therrien can leave together during the year.

        • KenD29 says:

does for me. How many games did he play with the Leafs? Use the money towards someone with some size. We do not need another often injured player made of glass.
So far this new regime has done nothing to impress me. Like Moen, but for 4 years?!

Tonight we skate with them, Tonight is our night!

        • Ron says:

It doesn’t trigger any panic button for me UCe either, its just as my first reaction is my own dislike for his type of play. As I had said he competes hard but in my own impression of hm since he came into the league is his cheap shot or in some cases a prediator type mentality. A cheap fix and by far a better player than a Darche, I just find it hard to get on his bandwagon.

      • HabFanSince72 says:

        Are you kidding?

        Therrien. Brisebois. Daigneault.

        No one wanted these guys.

    1m 1yr deal for Boyes

  10. Good signing. Low price. Low risk. High reward.
    Armstrong is full of character.

  11. HFX-HabFan says:

Burish is making Moen money. I’d rather have Moen

  12. Hali_Hab says:

I dont mind the Armstrong signing. I mean all things considered its a low risk high reward potential if he stays healthy. He could offer some sand paper to the habs bottom six if he is healthy. Well worth the risk for the money they spent IMO.

    • Yeah, definitely. Armstrong is not all that far removed from putting up 35-45 points. And he’s only 29. He has A LOT to prove this season, so the Habs might be able to get some good hockey out of him. If not, then it’s only a 1-year deal with a small cap hit, no big deal.

  13. hockeyscout101 says:

    Soccer game!!! GO ITALY!!!

  14. hockeyscout101 says:

Burish would have looked good for the Habs. Bergevin knew him from his days in Chicago.

  15. Dansolo says:

We are back to having Ryan White as our enforcer again. I hope that other teams don’t feel like they can walk all over our team.

  16. mrhabby says:

For 1m a year and he stays healthy this is good signing..

  17. mark24 says:

Two concerns with Armstrong injuries and age? Yes injuries are a concern for sure but the guy is only 29 years old. lol. To say age is a concern is ridiculous. Who wrote that?

  18. mrhabby says:

For 1m a year and he stays healthy this is good signing. Armstrong has lots to prove.he links up with moen, two sasks boys.

  19. ABHabsfan says:

I think MB just spent $1M just to show up Burke. If Armstrong is at a ll useful on the ice it becomes a bonus. Anytime he gets a goal we all get to laugh and point our finger(s) down the 401

  20. hockeyscout101 says:

Parros is seriously considering Montreal’s offer.

I feel sorry for Brad Staubitz in Anahiem because he has a coach in Boudreau who hates tough guys so Brad won’t even see a shift. Look what happened to Parros once Boudreau came in.

  21. naweed235 says:

Can someone please specify the injuries that kept Armstrong outta the line up for that long in LaughTown?

  22. steve17 says:

So with Armstrong signed, probably for the 3rd line right wing, what do the Habs do with Pulashaj? Staubitz is now a duck!

    Habfan17

  23. HabsFanMTL says:

i can’t believe we let Staubitz get away……..they just said that Armstrong is 6’2………but Staubitz is 6’2 also and is better at dropping the gloves……wtf is this new GM doing?

  24. Ghosts of the Forum says:

I posted this yesterday – Armstrong as a third liner with Eller could be good. As long as he isn’t our 2nd line solution. And of course, health a major concern

  25. HFX-HabFan says:

Prior to signing with the Laughs, Armstrong averaged 15 goals a year. He’s a decent buy-low option, and we’re only on the hook for one year, whereas the Leafs are paying him not to be on their roster for the next two years, at the same cost.

  26. Un Canadien errant says:

I hate the wanton use of the word ‘decimated’, even Michael Farber now used it in reference to the Devils potentially being “decimated” by the departure of Zach Parisé and Martin Brodeur.

The origin of the word is the civilized practice of the Roman legions who would put to death only one out of ten soldiers in a defeated adversary’s army. So a team can be decimated by injuries if you want to use the word that way, but now it’s been stretched beyond recognition to mean destroyed or defeated or rotten or not in the mood.

  27. rogieshan says:

No doubt Rick Dudley pushed for the Armstrong signing.

    • D Mex says:

Slagged the Habs for the Latendresse saga : among their sins, Montreal let him into the NHL too young.
He may / may have a point there, but this is what caving to pressure from fans, media and Pauline Marois can do for ‘ya :-)

      ALWAYS Habs –
      D Mex

  34. db says:

After Staubitz gets claimed on waivers last year, it’s nice to see him secure a 2 year deal with ANA..

  35. neutral says:

I’d go with the defense we have to get two good forwards – in the eastern conf WPG, WASH, TB, CAR, TOR, OTT NYI, they were all worst than we were on “D” – bring in a couple of good scores and we’ll have a shot at the playoffs. the Rangers and Boston are the only two teams that were better than we were on defense and not by much. so I hope MB improves the team up front and not with ex-players. that’s like bringing back a ex wife hoping she’s gonna change….

  36. HFX-HabFan says:

Wow, Whitney to Dallas for two years….could be a good signing for the first year, but he’ll be 42 in the second year

  37. slapshot777 says:

Dallas overpaid for Whitney $ 9 million over two years. That’s way too much for him and at that age.

hope MB know what hes doing

  40. naweed235 says:

Armstrong over Darche? hell yeah… good signing. He can lay down hits, kill penalties, get under the opponents skin and has great speed. Also a great team guy. Most importantly he is dirty… just what the Dr ordered.

  41. Storm Man says:

Happy Canada Day….. Anything going on with hockey today?

  42. hockeyscout101 says:

If Armstrong can play the way he did with the Pens, then this signing is a bargain. He is known has someone that hits high or sometimes cheap shots but does have the sandpaper. He should have a bone to pick when the Habs play Toronto 6 times this year.

  43. Marc10 says:

Well that was off the radar… Colby Armstrong.

Michel Therrien helped make that call I would imagine.

Not bad… $1mil from the Leafs and $1m from the Habs.

Here’s some help for the fourth line at center on the cheap… and if he’s not a complete mess physically… a little truculence.

  44. Boomer says:

come on Parros, Women in montreal would dig the stash, just sign already!!!!!!!

  45. BeachHabFan says:

despite injuries i really like colby armstrong signing. funny as hell (he was on the radio here a bunch during his rehab stints), team first guy, nasty hitter (as we and saku koivu remember well). CHaracter comes first in the new regime, and i like it.

(we really do need a top 6 LW if we plan to compete for the cup tho. maybe not this year, but still…)

    • RJ says:

Nasty hitter or DIRTY hitter? Garbage signing.

“My face is my mask,” Gump Worsley

      • BeachHabFan says:

if we’re gonna go through a season or two as transition before prospects move up i’d rather see us sign cheap, short term deals for these kinds of guys (who’d protect the prospects as well) than big $ deals like whitney just signed. not my first choice (pref langunbrunner or doan signing, etc) and he may be a second or third option for MB too, but I still like it enough

  52. MICP says:

A one year deal per his twitter

  53. RockinRey says:

Dont get rationalle of Staal signing for essentially the same money as Pit offered. Sure he is out from under Crosby and Malkins shadow but does he have any better chance at the cup? Nope

Will this allow him to cash in after a spectacular season? Nope, locked in for 10 yrs.

All this to play for his brother? Big deal. So he played 3rd fiddle in Pit. Big deal. He is not the type of guy who will put up major points anyway.
