Liveblog: Penguins stay alive with 3-2 win; Nashville eliminates Detroit

Penguins cdlebrate

Three power-play goals in the first period, and a 2-1 Philadelphia lead.
Then playoff hockey broke out.
The Penguins got goals from Jordan Staal to take a second-period lead.
Then Marc-André Fleury – who’d been lousy in this series – made 14 saves in the third period.
Back to Philly for Game 6, at noon on Sunday.

In the other Friday night game, Nashville beat Detroit 2-1 to end the Red Wings’ season. Youth and depth beat pride and experience.

Hal Gill, Frankie the Bull and the Brothers K play on.

And whought the mighty Wings would be the first playoff team to go home?

Why do PROFESSIONAL NHL officials continue to suck ass? I’m so sick of seeing a player get a cheap shot and then retaliate and end up the only player penalized especially when the ref is 10 feet away…

So has some of the shine come off the Detroit management geniuses? Their team is old and they have no suitable prospects on the horizons, what the hell is an Abdelkader?

From the Liveblog:” Stormin is hot tonight: Shanahan just decided to suspend Shea Weber for game Six and Seven of the Nashville Detroit series”

It just occurred to me, was Brendan Shanahan overthinking things when he didn’t suspend Shea Weber? Was he afraid that suspending the biggest Pred would open him up to charges of favouritism for his former club? So did he try to look impartial by calling this one ‘no foul’?Has anyone else advanced this postulate?

    ———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?

    http://relentlessineptitude.blogspot.com/

    • Stormin says:

I think Brendan Shanahan just misinterpreted the actual significance of the incident (Shea Weber head smack), and once again was consistent with being inconsistent when it comes to his views on head shots and or suspensions. Brendan Shanahan has played for quite a few teams so I hope that his past allegiances do not raise any equity issues when it comes to rendering his suspensions or not.

I think the NHL disciplinary system needs some sort of overhaul though, maybe even an outside body or at least not a league puppet
Someone or a group hired with very limited communication with league exec or GM’s during the season.

    • Hobie Hansen says:

The Weber turnbuckle head smash was an idiotic thing to do and it looked bad but I think the reason there was no suspension is that the impact to the player’s head wasn’t all that bad.

If you look at the replay Zetterberg’s head doesn’t hit the glass with a tremendous amount of force. Zetterberg, in my opinion, was remaining on one knee and trying to sell it a tiny bit, he isn’t stupid.

Some might argue that Weber should have been suspended on the intent alone but that’s another debate in itself. I’m not saying it wasn’t very close but I think Weber got 99% of the way there but just barely avoided a suspension by the skin of his teeth.

      • Stormin says:

You are right Hobie it was probably not that hard of a head shot, but I think in this instance the overwhelming stupidity of the gesture, should have driven the result to be a suspension,

Glad you got the joke, but overall I’m not completely against the notion.

Hall would be a cost-effective short-term acquisition, good influence on the youngsters when we have (inevitably) callups, and more realistic than getting into a bidding war for (gag) Bryan Allen.

Next season figures to be another difficult one, there’s no one or two players who we can acquire who will magically fill all the holes we have on our roster. A lot of people on here are deadset against bringing up the youths to learn on the job in the NHL, so then we need NHL’ers who’ll plug a hole cheaply for a season or two.

Hal Gill, as slow as he can be sometimes, would plug a hole dependably, eat up 15 minutes a game. He rarely gets hurt, understands his role on the team. If he’d accept coming back, if his feathers aren’t too ruffled, we should consider it.

Given how terrible Philly’s goaltending is Penguins have a much better chance beating the bruins so as much as I hate them, go Penguins!

Was there a single bodycheck (other than Malkin on Crosby) thrown in that game?

  9. JohnBellyful says:

Fugitive thoughts from a concussed brain … Seeing the number of power play goals Pittsburgh has yielded makes me think Gill should have won the Conn Smythe when he was with the Penguins … At what point does the light go on over Malkin and a few of his teammates that maybe, just maybe, taking stupid penalties might not be such a good thing, and has Bylsma ever raised the issue, even raised his voice, with the team? … Why is it taking Shanahan so long to mete out justice to Torres? Someone hide his dart board? … Is the NHL not cracking down on head shots because it’s a form of cost containment, with insurance companies assuming the salaries of injured players? … Has a porn movie ever briefly appeared on a hockey broadcast (it happened twice this week on regular television shows)? … With all the thuggery going on, bordering on the criminal, will this year’s playoff MVP receive the Con Smythe Trophy (hey, if it’s cons we’re talking about, should it be renamed the Stafford Smythe Trophy? Nope, I just checked, he died before his trial).

Somebody shoulld write a new story about ” The Sweater”, but using PG as some sort of miserly Scrooge model, and JM as the ghost of hockey to come

What a miser. The definition of pettiness.

I not a fan of introverts, but I loathe classless jerk introverts more.

Apparently Gauthier does not like to share his cookies either, So I imagine giving away a team Jersey was big time out of the question for that control freak.

Word about that kind of behaviour gets around quickly, and could discourage free agents from coming here. We don’t want to become the Cincinnati Bengals or the (dearly departed) Montréal Expos of the NHL. Treat people with class always.

If I’ve traded away Mike Cammalleri because of his behaviour, I still shake his hand and wish him the best of luck, and treat him like a valued employee. I give him and his family all the courtesy in the world in their efforts to relocate. What goes around comes around.

Call me crazy, but I think Philly is in trouble in this series.

    • TomNickle says:

      You’re crazy.

      • Toe Blake says:

Considering the wing-nut they have between the pipes, he could be right. It’s not like Laviolette has Cam Ward hiding in the wings.

        • TomNickle says:

Ditto for the Penguins. Which is why I say crazy. Neither of those teams is good enough to win four straight against the other.

And Philly seems to know how to dial it up against the Pens. Not sure the Pens know how to against them. Pens are just playing good hockey right now but not good enough to win four in a row. Still have a lot of problems.

Having said all of that I wouldn’t be betting on either team in the second round.

    • Propwash says:

      I agree.

I hope so. Philly winning the cup would be almost as disgusting as Boston doing it.

      • TomNickle says:

I find it hard to dislike Philadelphia these days. They’ve loaded up on skill and rid themselves of their problem players.

Richards and Carter for lack of a better word were assholes. They cleaned up the mess.

        • Habsolutely says:

I hate their fans. Worst fans in all of sport. I also dislike Brier rabbit, Hartnell, Rinaldo, and a few other of the miscreants on their team. I also loathe Laviolette.

        • Stormin says:

Never thought i could enjoy watching Philly, but with Pronger hurt and Richards and Carter playing at the beach, I would tend to agree, and KUDOS to Paul Holmgren , on some great player movement and acquisitions of NHL talent and draft picks in return. Some great draft picks especially the Giroux steal, Coutourier, damn they even have a hurt James van Riemsdyk who I imagine may be trade bait in the off season. Great team for years to come, Brygalov signing hurts them.

    • JF says:

I actually think you’re right. Fleury seems to have found his game, and the Flyers just don’t have the goaltending to win a series. If they do get by the Penguins, they won’t go further. Holmgren must be kicking himself for the Bryzgalov contract; he could have had Mike Smith.

  59. TomNickle says:

The Penguins took Marc Andre Fleury ahead of Eric Staal folks.

    • Stormin says:

I made that observation before, imagine they could have had both Eric and Jordan with Malkin and Crosby how is that for four top centers, fit that into the salary cap age and try and get them all the ice time they would demand.

You would need to put 2 pucks in play to keep them all happy.

    • TomNickle says:

They’re as close to unbeatable as a junior team can be.

Niagra thinking they can win anything with that sieve Vistentin is laughable.

London is going to have a team similar to the SeaDogs next year. They could easily rip off two consecutive Memorial Cups. But it won’t start this year.

Halifax is doomed I’m afraid because they’ll be losing Mackinnon. If they want to win one, it has to be next year.

WHL representation will get creamed from what I’ve heard about their potential champions.

Edit: Ottawa’s dangerous if they get to the dance. Lots of high end skill there and excellent defensively.

      • Stormin says:

Sea Dogs have not been tested at all yet in playoffs could hurt them when they get into more competitive games, especially if they keep running over the Q opponents, Memorial Cup should provide some serious tests for them, but they do look good.

        • TomNickle says:

I don’t think it’s a lack of being tested. I think they’re just that good.

Coyle, Huberdeau, Gauthier, Phillips, Jurco, Galiev and Beaulieu is a ridiculous collection of talent.

  61. Toe Blake says:

This just in: Scott Gomez intends to work out like a dog all summer and looks forward to a glorious ’12-’13 season. Jeff, take the risk, raise the price of a six of Export just five cents and we are covered!

  62. Toe Blake says:

If Crosby would show just half the character the Canadian women revealed against the US in the Womens’ World Final, he would merit all of our respect!
