I think Brendan Shanahan just misinterpreted the actual significance of the incident (Shea Weber head smack), and once again was consistent with being inconsistent when it comes to his views on head shots and or suspensions. Brendan Shanahan has played for quite a few teams so I hope that his past allegiances do not raise any equity issues when it comes to rendering his suspensions or not.
I think the NHL disciplinary system needs some sort of overhaul though, maybe even an outside body or at least not a league puppet
Someone or a group hired with very limited communication with league exec or GM’s during the season.

The Weber turnbuckle head smash was an idiotic thing to do and it looked bad but I think the reason there was no suspension is that the impact to the player’s head wasn’t all that bad.
If you look at the replay Zetterberg’s head doesn’t hit the glass with a tremendous amount of force. Zetterberg, in my opinion, was remaining on one knee and trying to sell it a tiny bit, he isn’t stupid.
Some might argue that Weber should have been suspended on the intent alone but that’s another debate in itself. I’m not saying it wasn’t very close but I think Weber got 99% of the way there but just barely avoided a suspension by the skin of his teeth.
You are right Hobie it was probably not that hard of a head shot, but I think in this instance the overwhelming stupidity of the gesture, should have driven the result to be a suspension,

I have some personal insight on this guy, so yeah, completely fake and a criminal. Google him, he’s a joke on top of things.
After he was acquitted of assaulting a friend’s and business partner’s daughter in a hotel room, when she thought she was showing up for a job interview, he was charged with obstruction of justice, and his press conference in response was farcical. He kept shrugging and saying “But I’ve been found innocent already!” Completely confused, believing there was a double-jeopardy angle there (stop watching American crime shows Frank, that doesn’t work in Canada), and misrepresenting the new charges, namely that the reason he was found not guilty, as opposed to found innocent (huge difference), is that he tampered with the witnesses.
The guy is a dirtbag.

Glad you got the joke, but overall I’m not completely against the notion.
Hall would be a cost-effective short-term acquisition, good influence on the youngsters when we have (inevitably) callups, and more realistic than getting into a bidding war for (gag) Bryan Allen.
Next season figures to be another difficult one, there’s no one or two players who we can acquire who will magically fill all the holes we have on our roster. A lot of people on here are deadset against bringing up the youths to learn on the job in the NHL, so then we need NHL’ers who’ll plug a hole cheaply for a season or two.
Hal Gill, as slow as he can be sometimes, would plug a hole dependably, eat up 15 minutes a game. He rarely gets hurt, understands his role on the team. If he’d accept coming back, if his feathers aren’t too ruffled, we should consider it.

Fugitive thoughts from a concussed brain … Seeing the number of power play goals Pittsburgh has yielded makes me think Gill should have won the Conn Smythe when he was with the Penguins … At what point does the light go on over Malkin and a few of his teammates that maybe, just maybe, taking stupid penalties might not be such a good thing, and has Bylsma ever raised the issue, even raised his voice, with the team? … Why is it taking Shanahan so long to mete out justice to Torres? Someone hide his dart board? … Is the NHL not cracking down on head shots because it’s a form of cost containment, with insurance companies assuming the salaries of injured players? … Has a porn movie ever briefly appeared on a hockey broadcast (it happened twice this week on regular television shows)? … With all the thuggery going on, bordering on the criminal, will this year’s playoff MVP receive the Con Smythe Trophy (hey, if it’s cons we’re talking about, should it be renamed the Stafford Smythe Trophy? Nope, I just checked, he died before his trial).
The inappropriate programming popping up over regular programming has happened a few times before, ever since there were bored guys in a control room. It’s just that now with PVR’s and the internet it’s not just odd news buried in the back of the paper anymore, it’s a story that has legs.
Pittsburgh had the 3rd-best penalty kill during the regular season, and 11 short-handed goals, so their lack of success in this round is a headscratcher.

Amen, I posted the same thought a few days ago. Luckily I watch most games on PVR and can skip over the commercials, but at the pub I’m a prisoner.
I never like Lanny to begin with, this is unbearable.
This was back in the day when my father decided he’d be a Nordique fan, and he’d get on my case because I wanted to watch the finals. I’ve never let him get back on board, he’s a Nordique now, no matter how antsy he got in ’93 with the second-guessing and the ancestral rights to the Habs that he tried to claim.

Yeah, but that Frank D’Angelo is a total camera whore. He’s had commercials where he sings with a band, where he plays goal (badly), now one where he cooks stuff that looks like treatment plant sludge, on an electric stovetop no less. He doesn’t really care if the commercials are effective or not, he just wants his ugly mug on the screen, because he’s a star, you see?
He’s also a sleazebag and small-time crook, a fraud and con artist. He hooked himself onto one of Canada’s richest families and has been throwing their money around like he’s a big shot. He’s flying quite a bit lower nowadays, blowing through their ‘get out of our lives’ money.

It’s too bad that Julien BriseBois isn’t a hockey guy, and is just bandied about as an ‘affirmative action’ GM candidate, because everyone else seem to be speaking very highly of him. I guess his success as a GM in the AHL means absolutely nothing at all and the skills he is demonstrating are completely not transferable to the NHL. Completely different. Night and day.

Considering the wing-nut they have between the pipes, he could be right. It’s not like Laviolette has Cam Ward hiding in the wings.
Ditto for the Penguins. Which is why I say crazy. Neither of those teams is good enough to win four straight against the other.
And Philly seems to know how to dial it up against the Pens. Not sure the Pens know how to against them. Pens are just playing good hockey right now but not good enough to win four in a row. Still have a lot of problems.
Having said all of that I wouldn’t be betting on either team in the second round.

I find it hard to dislike Philadelphia these days. They’ve loaded up on skill and rid themselves of their problem players.
Richards and Carter for lack of a better word were assholes. They cleaned up the mess.
I hate their fans. Worst fans in all of sport. I also dislike Brier rabbit, Hartnell, Rinaldo, and a few other of the miscreants on their team. I also loathe Laviolette.

Never thought i could enjoy watching Philly, but with Pronger hurt and Richards and Carter playing at the beach, I would tend to agree, and KUDOS to Paul Holmgren , on some great player movement and acquisitions of NHL talent and draft picks in return. Some great draft picks especially the Giroux steal, Coutourier, damn they even have a hurt James van Riemsdyk who I imagine may be trade bait in the off season. Great team for years to come, Brygalov signing hurts them.

I actually think you’re right. Fleury seems to have found his game, and the Flyers just don’t have the goaltending to win a series. If they do get by the Penguins, they won’t go further. Holmgren must be kicking himself for the Bryzgalov contract; he could have had Mike Smith.
The Penguins took Marc Andre Fleury ahead of Eric Staal folks.
I made that observation before, imagine they could have had both Eric and Jordan with Malkin and Crosby how is that for four top centers, fit that into the salary cap age and try and get them all the ice time they would demand.
You would need to put 2 pucks in play to keep them all happy.

They’re as close to unbeatable as a junior team can be.
Niagra thinking they can win anything with that sieve Vistentin is laughable.
London is going to have a team similar to the SeaDogs next year. They could easily rip off two consecutive Memorial Cups. But it won’t start this year.
Halifax is doomed I’m afraid because they’ll be losing Mackinnon. If they want to win one, it has to be next year.
WHL representation will get creamed from what I’ve heard about their potential champions.
Edit: Ottawa’s dangerous if they get to the dance. Lots of high end skill there and excellent defensively.
Sea Dogs have not been tested at all yet in playoffs could hurt them when they get into more competitive games, especially if they keep running over the Q opponents, Memorial Cup should provide some serious tests for them, but they do look good.

Coyle, Huberdeau, Gauthier, Phillips, Jurco, Galiev and Beaulieu is a ridiculous collection of talent.
