Suggested first question at John Tororella’s press conference:
“John, why did you bench Marion Gaborik for the first 11 minutes of the third period?”
End of press conference.
The Rangers’ superstar and many of his teammates were non-factors in a game the Devils on David Clarkson’s third-period goal.
It was the rugged winger’s third game-winner of the playoffs.
The Devils also got goals from Ilya Kovalchuk and fourth-liner Ryan Carter.
The home team got goals from Marc Staal and Chris Kreider, both on power plays.
Shot blocks were down: 16 by the Rangers (half of that total by Ryan McDonagh), seven by the Devils.
But there were 74 hits, 39 by the Rangers.
The series shifts to New Jersey for Game 3 on Saturday afternoon.

I guess he’s also a part of the team’s ‘colorful’ cast of characters.
I have to wonder why Kristo is already considered a flop? I have my reservations but they have to deal with the fact he has an opportunity to not sign and become UFA, therefore my biggest fear is he may want to sign with hometown Minnesota. Can u imagine if a francophone did same thing in order to sign with Montreal instead of Bruins! I give kristo credit for considering hos long term edu at ion more precedence over contract.
Apparently he’s not angling to get out of the Canadiens organization by not signing, he just really likes college hockey and UND and wants a chance at a championship. He’s also tight with Louis Leblanc and talks to him regularly, so I’m not overly worried about him skipping out and becoming a free agent.

Everyone talking about Kreider, but Adam Henrique is by FAR the most impressive rookie in these playoffs.

He definitely looks a lot better than Danny kristo right about now.
Henrique always looked awesome for Windsor. People complain about the QMJHL and the lack of picks from there, but we draft the second most players out of the Q of any team in the last 9 years (Timmins era).
Since Subban/Weber we haven’t effectively mined the OHL. I think our only pick from there was Missainen

Who drafts the most? From the Q, I mean
That’s a very difficult question.
I’d be willing to bet that the Los Angeles Kings draft a ton out of the OHL compared to other teams.
Carolina probably drafts their share out of the OHL too.
Sorry for flooding the comment with replies but I believe San Jose does. Just guessing though and it obviously depends on the time period.
Over the last 9 years (the years i measured since those are the Timmins drafts)… Philly took 17 to our 14.
However if you add Louis Leblanc, and all the guys we have signed as Free Agents out of the Q, (Desharnais, Lefebvre, Masse, Delmas, Dame-Malka, etc….) we’d be number 1 for recruiting from that league.

Is it safe to say that Kristo is a second round flop or is it still too early.
I’ll wait until he plays a few middling games with th habs before I declare him a flop.
Will he ever play for the Habs. Do we really need another 5ft10, 180 pound winger with no toughness.
Yeah we should get rid of all the talented 5’10, 5’11 players who work hard, and get more Rene Bourques.

109 points in 117 games in the NCAA.
That’s actually better than Kreider’s production but with arguably better talent around him.
Still too early I say.
I’d say it’s way, way, way to early to call him a flop.
To be fair Henrique has had almost a full season of NHL hockey to get acclimated to the nuances of the professional game while Kreider’s had all of a couple weeks.
I really like Henrique and think he does everything well above average. Going to be an excellent player for a long time by the looks of things.
Kreider seems to have elite speed and may have the offensive instincts to become a superstar.
I think it’s fair to say the jury’s still out.
Elliot Friedman is the best in his group!
Maybe that’s because his group is so lacking in quality but don’t believe so.
His piece on Kane was no more libelous than the pieces run on Carey Price when he was photographed in full flight a couple of years ago and there was nowhere near the firestorm at that time.
It is an opinion or talk piece, he is asking a question on the status of Kane based on observations, images and performance!

Man I’d love to have clarkson on the habs.
I remember saying that when the Devils where trying to deal him to make cap room for Praise….don’t think he is going anywhere now. Guess we just have to settle for Bourque.
And bork would be better than clarkson were he motivated.
I’ll hold judgement until I see Bourque fight Lucic and win.
A very good friend of mine was his roomate with the Port Hope Predators or Clippers or whatever the hell they were called then.
Messy dude apparently.
Messy like doesn’t clean the toilet? Or messy like gets falling down drunk every night?
He wasn’t a drunk I don’t believe. He didn’t mind practicing his craft at the local bars as I recall(fighting).
Just not tidy.

Hey don’t judge. Things change. I’m sure he’s much different now than he was at the age of 17.

Well, McDonagh is spoken of like he’s Bobby Orr on HIO. So I’d say Kreider is the second best player ever.
Kreider had more upside (and uncertainty) as a prospect but we had to go with the French kid. Nobody complained at the time. It was a logical move.
Kreider and McDonagh could make life tough for us during the next ten years.
I wouldn’t give up on Leblanc yet.
For sure. I just wish he had of been developed properly instead of being rushed.

Yeah I get it.
I did a lot of reading about the prospects in his draft year and the only negative thing I read about him was that he scored low on his fitness testing. But it was an understandable flaw considering he play college hockey.
Everyone said he had a good work ethic and was one of the best board battlers in the USHL and he was had good stickhandling. If he hadn’t gone the college route a lot of people said he could’ve gone top ten.
When the Habs picked LeBlanc, I was happy; not just because he was from Montreal but because I believe the Habs got a steal with him. I still think they did. Sure maybe some guys under him are doing better now, but 3 to 4 years time I think a lot of teams are going to be looking and think why didn’t we draft him.
Graves must have gone to the Messier/Lay’s Chips hair salon.
Adam Graves going for the Mark Messier look?
All I keep thinking is that the Rangers are the luckiest team on the planet right now… How they have managed to escape with so few injuries while playing their shot-blocking style is remarkable.
If it was the Canadiens there would be at least 2-3 players out with broken ankles/hands by now.
Besides Gorges, who blocks shots on the Habs? Gomez wouldn’t block a shot if his life depended on it.
Injuries not energies.

Here’s the part of the Elliotte Friedman that seems to be the reason that it got pulled. I wonder how long this will stay up here?
===========
The question everyone’s asking is: Should the Blackhawks trade Patrick Kane?
The question should be: what are the Blackhawks, the NHL and the NHLPA going to do about Patrick Kane?
It is possible Kane doesn’t really have a problem. Maybe he’s an unlucky guy getting caught by camera phones every time out. He’s a celebrity, and one of the worst things about society is people are more than happy to anonymously narc on them.
But Kane seems to be getting “caught” more than most.
Some of it – like the topless limousine photos – is harmless. Hey, you’re young, single, famous and wealthy. Enjoy. But we don’t see as many photos of them. The circumstantial evidence against Kane is growing. The infamous taxicab ride. The night he arrived at a Bulls game with a black eye. And now, “The Wisconsin Weekend.”
It gets to a point where you can’t say, “He’s 23. Boys will be boys.” You have to say, “Do we have a serious issue here?”
(And, you do wonder, in all of the silence over the past 48 hours, if that question is being asked.)
One year ago, as the league went through its awful summer, there were accusations that neither the NHL nor the NHLPA really cared about its players. I don’t think that’s fair, because a lot of great work is done in private. But I do believe that sometimes the two sides, and some teams, are not proactive enough in determining or staying on top of problems.
For example, the NHL and NHLPA have an excellent substance abuse program. The only problem is you can’t be forced into it. Technically, players can “voluntarily” enter the system, but you have to take the first step. If Patrick Kane needs help, is he, at this point in his life, going to make that move?
You have to believe the Blackhawks have a pretty decent idea of how serious this issue is or isn’t. A couple of years ago, there were rumours about what one particular player was doing away from the ice. I ran into the GM and asked about it. He didn’t tell me what exactly was discovered, but he gave an idea of how thoroughly they’d looked into it. Team security, league security, police, private detectives. It was pretty interesting.
Can’t imagine that’s changed over time.
The Blackhawks have a lot invested in Kane. He’s a cornerstone player, a major reason they ended what was, at the time, the longest Stanley Cup drought in the NHL. He lived with Stan Bowman upon arrival in Chicago, so there’s a deep connection.
Many of the local columns are about how the organization should be unhappy because it is image-conscious and Kane tarnishes that. Well, I can’t imagine anything better for the team’s image than sitting down with Kane and having an honest conversation about where he is, where he’s going and if the people he hangs around with aren’t exactly helping the situation.
The doctors responsible for the joint NHL/NHLPA program should be there, too, because this isn’t just a Chicago problem. This isn’t funny, harmless stuff anymore. It’s happening far too often, and if Kane won’t do anything about it, there are three entities (team, league, association) that should.
I remember reading that in his 30 thoughts article thinking he was just overreacting, but then I actually read about everything Kane has been up to the last few days and I completely understood…
Crashing frat parties, insulting everybody, putting his two hands around a girl’s neck who rejected him, getting kicked out of said frat party and almost getting in a fight, blacking out at a college bar a couple times, dancing on the bar with no shirt on, almost getting arrested when he and his buddies almost got into a fight in the middle of the day, etc etc…
All this while wearing a shirt that has a picture of him shirtless in the back of a limo with two girls printed on the back of it with his name.
Combined with the cab driver incident… Not looking good for “Kaner”.
Very dishonest weasely reporting by Friedman. He implies that Kane is an alcoholic who needs medical help without ever stating it outright or providing any evidence. Even by the current standards of the CBC, that is shoddy journalism. It’s Murdochian.
On the other hand Kane sounds like a train wreck.

Not really. Calling someone a tool means they are someone who does not make decisions or statements for themselves or is being used. Friedman is hardly that and is more the opposite if anything.
I still like your interpretation… but when used to describe somebody it is done in a derogatory rather than a complimentary manner.

I had never tried it before, but they had a lady demo’ing it when we were at the store and we had to buy it. One of the best tasting cheeses I have ever tasted. I put some chunks of it in the Magic Bullet tonight and grated it up for wifey to put on her Chicken Salad. Goes really good on Wheat Thins.
Keep Staubitz,Moen and White! Roll players needed to win!Heck of a fourth line!
About Carbo
Alot of us want him back, but I was thinking today, that he hasn’t coached in the NHL since coaching with the Habs.
No other teams want him, why should we?
Maybe there’s a story behind this like Carbo didn’t want to coach or something.
I don’t know who the Habs should get, I just hope Bergevin gets the best guy out there.
But why should we take a guy that 29 other teams don’t even want?
Why should we care that 29 other teams don’t want him?

Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.
Tough to argue with that logic : Carbonneau is available, therefore, it follows that nobody wants him, therefore, why should we – is this how it goes ??
Whoever Montreal eventually signs has to be ” available ” in order to sign. But when a coach is available to sign, it really means nobody wants him. So this means the Habs are doomed to sign a loser because he will be available to sign here. Makes sense …

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
The league takes a dim view of trying to sign a coach that is ‘ not available ‘ – I think it’s called tampering. That’s why only deadbeats are signed to coach in the NHL …

Go Big Bird!Go Devils!
My wacky idea of the day. Habs should use their 3rd and 32nd picks to pick up Forsberg and Collberg. A pair of swedes. This gives us high end swedish talent, and would put the pair in a situation to grow with each other, and push each other. I find this is usually a problem with the russians, they dont form that competitive bond with a teammate, they are usually the lone Russian on their squad, or lone wolf temperaments, so this natural competitiveness and friendship doesnt nurture.
I think this type of bonding scenario would pay huge dividends. Plus they are both high end skill players. What do you think?
“I don’t wanna see Maurice tonight, I want the rocket!”
I am not sure about those two players in particular, but the idea of matching countrymen is interesting. A lot of the success Erik Karlsson has had in Ottawa has been attributed to the mentoring relationship with Daniel Alfredsson, as Karlsson lived with Alfredsson when he first moved to Ottawa. If you can’t draft them together, then a mentoring situation should be considered.
What makes you think Collberg will be available at 32?

Alright boys, I was hunkered down to spar with you guys, but my wife (the Grand Puba) just called, and I need to take out a second mortgage, because she wants me to meet her at Costco.
I wonder if Markov will be there again today.
Perhaps more civil than last time.
So Bon Appetit and we’ll fight later.
In the meantime, try and behave yourselves.
I’ll bring you back a Costco cookie!

Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.
The Rangers have 16 solid players who are 30 or under. I can’t believe that Glen Sather had the patience to hang on to them all without trading for a quick fix.
The only weakness is an inability of the team to score a consistent amount of goals.
He also got lucky by unloading some Sh*t contracts…Drury, Gomez and redden. There should have been some rules on that.

Wade Redden should not be languishing in the minors. That’s disgraceful.

Patience? What patience?
A fly reel, bait (fresh from Alaska), and a really big fish!
He snagged his super star without doing much more than using his dial finger.
There was an interesting article a couple years back, where it was explained that all the crazy free agent signings by Glen Sather were forced by Jimmy Dolan, the abysmal owner of the Knicks and Rangers. The argument went that Mr. Sather wanted to build long-term, through the draft, but Mr. Dolan insisted that New York was the Big Time and wouldn’t accept losing, and needed primetime names to attract fans and compete with all the other sports in the Big Apple.
James Dolan is a shyster and a boor. He’s the ‘lead singer’ of a band bearing his name, and during staff parties he forces his employees to listen to him perform and cheer him on, like Frank DeAngelo, another megalomaniac.
The article I read stated that after enough flop signings, ones which Glen Sather didn’t want to do but was forced into, he finally convinced his owner to let him run the team the way he wants, and a couple years later voilà, they’re contenders.

Sounds like Gob Bluth.
I hate to get into this but you want to give a pass to Sather because of interference from upper management and George Gillett didn’t have anything to do with the terrible trade.
Not sure exactly what your point is and how George Gillett figures in this.
My point is in response to 24 Cups’ post about how he is surprised that Glen Sather had the patience to hang on to his prospects to build this team. I took that as a reference to his earlier practice of signing lots of high-priced free agents that inevitably crapped out. I think most everyone was shocked that Glen Sather did this, since he used to gripe about crazy contracts when he was in Edmonton, and because we kind of assume that he’s a smart guy. So I brought up this article, which I think brings a new perspective on how on Earth Mr. Sather went through this free agency binge. When I read it, it suddenly made sense that he brought in all these guys: his owner told him to. Same as Lou Lamoriello being told to sign Ilya Kovalchuk by his owner, contrary to his past practices.
So not giving Glen Sather a pass as much as trying to explain what the heck was going on.

.I guess what I was trying to say is the owners have a lot to say about trades that we know little about. We spend a lot of time trying to figure out what GM’s are thinking when really they are being told to make something happen. Sorry if it came across poorly.
Cool, understood. I get when owners are consulted when a major trade or free agent acquisition is considered, that makes sense, but not when the owner makes the decisions, like George Steinbrenner or Dan Snyder, that’s a recipe for disaster.
I like Geoff Molson’s attitude that he wants to win, and the way he will go about it is by hiring the best people possible, giving them all the resources they need, and then get the heck out of the way.
I’ve had jobs where bosses would give me a lot of leeway, would challenge me on some decisions, but ultimately trusted me to carry the ball, as long as I kept them in the loop. I think that’s as much input as an owner should have.

Certainly. Not sure why we’re still in Afghanistan after basically dismantling the Al-Quaida network.
I guess I find it interesting that we still don’t understand concussions very well. I remember getting concussions as a teen or young adult, the sum total of the medical precautions taken was to have my roommate wake me up during the night to make sure it wasn’t getting worse. No follow up, no mention that it might have more lasting consequences.
I wonder if it explains my grades my third year at Uni?

Boone, why would you add salt to the wound by mentioning Gomez?
I hear he’s in intensive training for next season.
As I mentioned this morning, that’s a cut and paste from last summer.
He’s already training while Price is just hanging out, working on his yard. Go Gomez Go!
Actually Shiram, I think he’s building a trap for his buddy Gorges.
When you say Go Gomez Go, I am assuming you gave him a map of downtown Hamilton correct? Lots of one way streets, he will need some extra time to find Copps Coliseum.
So how’s life treating you these days, my friend?
How’s your golf game? Is it a daily thing?
You must have a pretty low handicap….
Takes alot of endurance to take your bags on and off the bus. No one will carry your luggage for you in the AHL. Wonder how much he will smile and laugh then.
What’s your definition of “intensive training”?
I doubt it’s from the same book as Gomez.
I’m not nearly the hockey talent that he’s supposed to be, but give me 82 games and I betcha I’ll score a goal too!
For a hell of a lot cheaper than $7MM.
Took Staubitz all year to get 1 goal… might be harder than it looks. I’d bet that even if most of us were given the possibility of 82 games to get a goal, we wouldn’t last 82 games before getting plastered and injured.
Maybe that’s why Staubitz was put on waivers.
The bone I have to pick is the same as most.
So much money for so little performance. I stayed in Gomez’ corner last year, hoping of a turnaround.
I keep thinking of how effective he was in both rounds of the 2009 playoffs for us, and wonder what happened to that guy.
For soooo much money.
We’ve become desensitized to how much these guys make.
I’d take a fraction of that and put my body on the line.
But for a top-10 to 15 in salary earnings, you have to expect more than that!
I wonder if Gomez is washed up at 31.
Hell, I wondered if he was washed up at 28 too.
Should be in his Prime starting Now, wait no Now , okay by Training Camp forsure then he will be in his prime!
He’s done and I don’t want to see his face again. Smiling and laughing all the way to the bank. At this point I’m looking forward to seeing how Bergevin uses that 7 mil in cap space.
He is the Master Poop Disturber Bri.
Shot!
With all the shot blocking trending up, goaltending is slowly becoming unimportant, a team should just put in the fattest guy around in nets.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
That would mean I could become the goalie’s nutrionist!
Put them all on a poutine rich diet.

I’d go with Brodeur over Lundqvist in a playoff series anytime.
Brodeur in his prime…no doubt. Brodeur at 40……
He can show some rust. The devils offense has their work cut out for them
“Like Canadian Hip hop..check us out http://www.groovecontrolmusic.com“
Lundqvist is in his prime, he had an amazing season and a hell of a playoff. Brodeur is going to most likely retire after this year and if not next. Rangers are going to take this series.
Yeah, Devils did deserve to win that first game. If the Rangers do emerge as the victors of this series, I expect them to get steamrolled by LA (who I’m guessing will advance to the Cup finals): even if they do have something left in the tank, they’ll probably spend it all blocking shots and playing defensively after which LA will take over, being rather well-rested.
How can a team that gets shut out and loses 3 – nothing deserve to win?
2 of the three goals were very late when the devils were pinching there d and pushing for the tie, and 1 of those was even an empty netter.
The devils got more pressure and better chances but the Rangers stole a win.
