Say goodnight, Kate Smith.
God bless parity.
Another top seed is out of the playoffs.
Ilya Kovalchuk, who is having great playoffs, fired a rocket past Ilya Bryzgalov on a New Jersey power play to seal the deal in five games.
With Claude Giroux watching from the stands, Philadelphia couldn’t generate enough offence to beat New Jersey’s rock-solid defensive system.
Bottom line: New Jersey’s best outplayed Philadelphia’s.
Jaromir Jagr was invisible in the series, as were James Van Riemsdyk and Wayne Simmonds.
In the end, the Flyers may have been hurt by their easy conquest of the Penguins.
The Devils had a tough series against Florida, going to OT in the seventh game in the Panthers building.
They were battle-tested, and ready to advance.
BTW, Bryzgalov is signed until 2020.
And Phoenix, his old team, has Mike Smith.
The Flyers join the Bruins, Penguins, Canucks, Blues, Blackhawks, Red Wings and Predators as upset victims.
Here’s a wild stat: the Devils are the highest-scoring regular-season team still alive in the playoffs.
Another one: Only three of 25 highest salaried players are still active in playoffs: Brad Richards, Marion Gaborik and Alexander Ovechkin.

Flyers only 8 more years of Bryzlogov goaltending to go…….
I am still shaking my head for that signing.
I hope our new GM doesn’t make the same mistake.
Richard R
Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.
So, I guess the playoffs are now officially douchebag-free. Well, Mike Richards, but relatively free. Suck it Hartnell.
Glen Sather.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
Nice suit Giroux.
Don’t blame bryzgalov, the devils were just plain better
Agree, but given the contract he got, he didn’t steal anything in that series either.
Good bye Philties!
Wasn’t Bryz’s fault.
Did you see the 2nd goal?
Gnight u foookers!
For something that was “called right away” it took Bob Cole quite a long time to figure out that was no goal.

Love how Galley had to try and call out Kovalchuk on that play. Unbelieveable.
Bob Cole said Flyer Fans are giving up – So They’re going home (Flyers/Russians)……..
haha well played otter!
For everyone who says that Bob Cole is a legend, that shameful episode of homerism may be the lasting legacy of his career.

Bob Cole just said if Bobby Clarke was playing it would be different tonight! Come on,you gotta love Cole!LOL!
Yeah really! Clarkie’s what, 65? He couldn’t keep up!!!
Oh well Jagr. You can go back to being a right wing politician now.
Fans starting to Matt Read the writing on the wall, and concession stands have cut off the Daniel Briere Taps, na na na na
Won’t stop them from Brayden Coburning about how hard they were done by with Giroux’z suspension. Simmonds they’ll never learn….
Man, I have to admit i was way wrong at the start of the season. I thought the Devils and the Sens would compete for last in the East — both ending up outplaying my Habs. I thought the Devils would be hamstrung by Kovalchuk’s contract and the fines and loss of draft position the contract entailed. I thought Kovalchuk’s contract would be alienate him from his team-mates.
Great job by Lou Lamoriello and Peter Deboer, regardless of whether the Devils advance after this series. They’ve had a great season.
Good thing I’m not an NHL GM. But I can’t help wondering why JM and PG couldn’t build a team that could forecheck and stand up for itself? Why did we dump and chase without a forecheck to speak of and why, when we made it a practice to turn the other cheek, were we among the league leaders in minor penalties? We were really really badly served by our previous regime. Let’s hope Bergevin, Dudley and co. change all that.
Nice, Galley with a tribute to Clarke showing multiple dirty hits, ahh yes Gary you do indeed know good hockey.
Did we help vigneault and Quenneville keep their jobs by being so interested in them.
Perhaps Molson would have been better off keeping PG around a couple more weeks aksing about those two, then both would be immediately fired and then upon firing PG, Bergevin could have had his choice.
That’s a very insightful observation. Methinks you are right!
Flyers fans starting to get UGLY!
You watch, last 2 or 3 minutes, Philly is going to get so chippy, it’ll make your head spin.
they’ve been ugly their entire lives!
They aint got no alibi!
Nothing but respect for this Devils team. No matter how much of a headache they and particularly Brodeur have been to the Habs I can’t help but admire their play. It may not be exciting hockey but it’s disciplined, organized, and doesn’t depend on cheap shots or intimidation.
Then there’s Kovalchuk. What a gem.

Quite true – and they can forecheck quite well, which is the difference between this team and, say, the Habs playing JM defensive style where they get trapped in their own zone, chasing down the puck and it becomes a shooting gallery on the goaltender.
I said this during another Devils-Flyers game that the Devils, for a defensively oriented hockey team, sure do fore-check effectively. They often send in three players.
As Boone stated at 10:02. A very well coached team.
The Kings are quite similar too, I believe, and could probably best the Devils in a series should they meet in the SC finals.
Down goes Hartnell
Bob Cole says “Still 3-1, They’re within striking distance” Against Marty Brodeur in the third period of an elimination game… I think not.
Cole is within striking distance of retirement.
And even closer to senility.
Yeah it’s time for Bob to hang em up. He was very good for a very long time, let’s remember him for that. His call in ’93 still echos in my head from time to time.
Enjoying a nice glass of Bacardi and diet pop, and also enjoying watching Philly goons lose. Jersey is just a very well put together team. Well coached, good management. I’m gonna root for Marty the rest of the way.
Rumor has it Molson really wants Briere
The habs already went after him when he was UFA. He said no thanks. Why anyone would trade for him after that is beyond me.
Iiii see what you did there……

BA-DUM PSSSH!
Or Matt Moulson of The Islanders…..
Devils are very impressive. Plus it would be nice for Larry Robinson’s name to be engraved on the cup once more.
Suck it ed Snider.
Jagr and Briere have been invisible tonight from an offensive perspective (Briere did have the shot on the post).
By the way, just as I took off for Jim’s place, he called to say that there weren’t enough chops. Perhaps next time….
Nice spear by Briere on Carter? that’s where Girioux gets his tips on being a chippy player……
I heard an interview at start of the season on the radio with a flyer player (can’t remember who) he mentioned himself that Briere has mastered the art of extra little stickwork and how essentially dirty Briere plays.
Briere has always gotten away with stuff especially when he played in Buffalo…….
Boston and Philly out early.
This is a win for hockey.

In fairness, Fleury was an unexpected boon to anybody that had Flyers players. Life is all about balance. LOL

I loved the Gumper! Read a true story of when he was first signed by the Rangers out of Verdun. It was pre season training camp on an outdoor football field. All the guys were doing exercises and lifting weights, and the owner shows up and asks a reporter”So where’s this new goalie we signed?” The reporter pointed across the field and there’s the Gumper. He’s walking around the track, smoking a cigar, wearing shorts, black knee socks and Brogues!.
That guy Kovalchuk is a playoff performer. With a name like that, he must be a good old farm boy from Saskatchewan, the Devils must be happy he’s not some enigmatic Russian floater who doesn’t give a crap about the Stanley Cup.
Took him long enough..
Those were some great Thrasher teams he played on……
Olé Olé Olé
Have to believe refs are going to be looking to give Philly a powerplay. Discipline will be key for the Devils.
Lights out!
Wonderful, great discipline Philly, just wonderful.
Bob Cole called that goal…….
Yesssss!
Kovy!

I think Jacques Lemaire created an ISO manual for all future New Jersey coaches to follow.
I guess Craig Berube as Asst. Coach for the flyers is in charge of cheap shots, late hits and other equally important parts of the Flyers Special teams package?
I could see Hal Gill returning to the Penguins, as this playoff season illustrated there huge deficiencies in defensive zone coverage and the PK
Didn’t they have the 3rd best PK during the reg. season?
Ol Martin F. is going to do it again!
Still fun watching the Flyers lose. Always fun.
Most of the Flyer players will need an exorcism performed on them before they go back to their families after the playoffs. Some very bad vicious sh*t handed out by them.
Yes Ron, Holtby has checked out, but washington will keep starting him in net. Oh Ronnie has become fingernails on chalkboard.
Boudreau shot his observation down instantly,,
Absolutely, Hrudey as well.
“Hal Gill on Twitter: Stats are for losers!”
I take it he doesn’t subscribe to EOTP.
I loved the post Boone put up from Gill earlier about playing in two great cities. Gill is going to become a really good coach if chooses to go that route.
Scott Gomez, who’s better as a wit than a hockey player, commented on Gill’s tendency to talk A LOT in the room. If Gill were a coach, Gomez said, “he’d lose the team in a week.” Seriously, though, he’s a good guy. 1000+ games with his skating and offensive “skills”. Amazing.

I would have to say putting the Flyers jersey on,, is like diving head first into the excretory opening at the end of the alimentary canal
Man, the Penguins must totally be pissed right now. Not to mention the Bruins. Did both of these teams peak too early during the regular season?
A Devils-Coyotes final could send the NHL back to the dark ages.
Whereas the Flyers advancing puts it back to the Stone Age where hunter-gatherers ruled, devouring uncooked animal organs between periods and using stone axes as hockey sticks.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
For a minute there I thought you were talking about Habs professor.
Glad to see another crucial playoff game where the refs are less than consistent.
I almost forgot why I disliked the Flyers so much. Its all coming back now
My wife, the 2nd most intelligent poster on this site, has just informed me that I should go with the Blueberry Tea sans tea.
Phyllie fans!
It doesn’t look like they’ve changed much since our Habs met them in the division final.
I can just imagine the blog sites, with all the non-calls they’re booing to.
Jersey’s my new lost leader for these playoffs.
Martin Brodeur is no Marc Andre Fleury, much to the Flyers’ chagrin.
The flyers have even turned good guys like couturier and giroux into arseholes. Why is couturier chirping everyone?
I saw that as well, very dissappointing.
It’s the jersey, whoever slips it on turns into a dinkhead

Uhhmm excuse me Galley you neandrathal idiot, Rinaldo has crossed the line on at least 2 hits already. So happy he works for me as a Cdn Taxpayer.
Galley is a burned out Bruin. Nuff said
Philly just can’t wash that 40-year filth off.
Go Devils Go!
How can anyone cheer for the flyers?
good question.
My mechanic does, funny my brakes seem to be bad again and he just fixed them….
Time to change mechanics.
Did you get down to Habfan 10912′s place in time for pork chops tonight?
Looks like Flyers are starting to Goon it up!
Cheap shot by Rinaldo. And he only gets 2 min.
Rinaldo has been out for blood since drop of the puck. I hate Philadelphia.
That was Bruin like.
———————————–
Rinaldo! What a cretin!
I think Gary Galley actually enjoys it when players are injured. Boston should consider retiring his number, he epitomizes Bruin hockey.
Philthy fans booing the guy getting up.

Jagr is showing his advanced age (40) on the ice the last few games……..
Brodeur is 40 also. He’s not looking too shabby.
Brodeur is better than Roy.
I only say that because it always jump starts MB’s ratings!
It’s a long held tradition.
Price is better than Brodeur.
But he’s not better than Halak.
Halak has to get through a season without getting hurt to find out how good he can be but the way teams crash the net nowadays & at Halak’s size that may not happen……..
Halak is 5’11″.
Gump Worsley was 5’7″.
I hate to admit it but I’m enjoying this game even though it’s not the Habs who are playing.
Do I open a 2nd bottle of wine or just settle for a Rusty Nail or a double Blueberry Tea?
Blueberry Tea, you will sleep better afterwards.
Advice taken. You’re the man, Gerald!
Live large…the Rusty Nail.

Okay I am calling it now, Gomez with a hat trick next year.
Did I mention he will have a Bulldog uniform on playing against the Philadelphia Phantoms with Bryzgalov in net?
Well played!
3 goals for the season?
Anybody else not real impressed by Wayne Simmonds? Skates fast and that’s about it.
—————-
Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.
I wouldnt mind him on the HABS.
The Flyers need Lauren Hart to make a reappearance.
Frankly, I wouldn’t mind that either.
Philly is looking more like the team that got swept last year, than the team that came back being down 3 games to win it against BOS.
What was Brodeur doing?
Go Habs Go!

NJ wants it more , there compete level is noticeably higher
Scott Hartnell without Giroux reminds me of Moen.
How can Philly leave Bryzgalov in nets? Every shot on net has a chance of going in.
Is Bobrovsky really that bad?
In a word, yes.
Yah but Jay Onrait on TSN loves him!
Doesn’t he love Gomez too?
You aren’t supposed to say that part.
Kovalchuk is real expensive but what a shot he has.
