Liveblog: Bruins are out!

Caps celebrate
Tim Thomas blows off Barack Obama.
Washington eliminates the Bruins.
Coincidence?

How’s this for an over-the-top radio call?

OK, the Canadiens missed the playoffs.

But here’s some consolation: Boston is dead after the first round.
In overtime of Game 7, Joel Ward buried a backhand and the Capitals move on to the second round.

P.K. Subban tweets: Wardo! With the snizzle, post game inte, and the fresh cut too!An NHL first: Seven games decided by one goal.

And the last time a rookie goaltender knocked out the defending Stanley Cup champions from Boston?

Ken Dryden.

And Braden Holtby may end up visiting the White House.

Danny Kristo has turned down an offer to turn pro and will play his senior season at the University of North Dakota.

Kristo, the Canadiens’ second round draft choice in 2008, can become an unrestricted free agent of the Canadiens don’t sign him by next summer.

The Canadiens had hoped Kristo would join top junior prospects Jared Tinordi, Brendan Gallagher, Nathan Beaulieu and Michaël Bournival in boosting the Hamilton Bulldogs next season.

I just know the Bruins will spear Hammer and will score while he’s on the ice.

Kristo seems like another one of those promising picks who just fade away to black..until they surface with the Preds and turn into a valuable contributor of course. Watching Chipchura last night made me realize how much the Habs seem to miss on what role a guy should play. I liked Chips…glad to see he’s playing well.

Heard an interesting comment on Fan590 today, apparantly Hunter has no contract beyond this year and due to his financial security and the fact he has London Knights to fall back on they speculate he is coaching how he wants to. Coaching his players to play his way. They don’t think he is back next year.

  35. Habsolutely says:

Biggest weakness I see on the Caps is their D. Really horrible.

    • HFX-HabFan says:

Alzner-Carlson are one of the best young pairings in the league. Green won’t be the same offensive whiz that he was under Boudreau though, even when fully healthy. If Wideman walks, they’ll need to replace his minutes. I wouldn’t be totally surprised if they make a play for Suter in the summer though.

      • Habsolutely says:

Offensively, they have some great D-men, but they are really lacking a big tough D-man, or a Gorges type shot blocking dynamo.

        • HFX-HabFan says:

I would say Alzner is very similar to Gorges if not a bit more physical. They also have some nasty in Schultz and Erskine (not dressed tonight). I think the biggest need for Washington is secondary scoring. If they can convince Kuznetsov to cross the pond next year, that will be huge for them. If Semin walks, they should be able to land a decent UFA with the 6 million freed up.

          • Habsolutely says:

Good point. Probably wouldn’t hurt them, to get a couple gritty, 20-25 goal scorers who could help with the secondary scoring. I just seem to notice their D falling too far back and giving up the blue line too easily.

Mr. Boone I respectfully completely disagree with you in relation to playoffs two years ago. I had no idea we scored goals in those game or blocked shots or kept Crosby and Ovechkin to the outside. Apparantly I watched a different series.

    • Bill says:

I agree fully that it wouldn’t have happened without Halak’s insane two-series run of miraculous play. The Habs didn’t score much and for every shot they blocked three got through. Halak was unconscious, it had to be admitted.

Sorry disagree Bill. Like saying Montreal wins cup because of Roy and Claude Lemiuex was of no significance.

Agree and don’t get me wrong, Halak was GREAT! But this ridiculous use of the term, won by himself is just plain stupid. Was Halak the Montreal MVP, yes he was, but the team played to its strengths and last I checked there was players on the ice in front of Halak.

          • Bill says:

Sorry guys, I’m not a Halakatamite, but that was some hot goaltending if I ever saw it.

            Full Breezer 4 Life

          • HabinBurlington says:

Bill I guess I don’t speak english well, didn’t say Halak wasn’t great, but I guess when I read a Goalie single handedly won a playoff series I am anticipating every game be 1-0. Last I checked Montreal scored some goals, come from behind wins etc… things you can’t do with only goaltending.

          • Bill says:

Well, I guess it’s obvious that a goalie can’t win ‘single-handedly’, but I follow the common usage where that expression is understood to mean the goalie was the difference between winning and losing. And Halak was the reason the Habs won those two series. Their scoring was mediocre, their defence was crap – running around, constantly outshot and outchanced – and with a goalie who wasn’t playing out of his mind, they would have been out in five games of the first round.

Does that clarify my position? :)

        • Duracell3 says:

In the Capitals series, Ovechkin, was shut down to a great degree by the D.
But if you have any memory whatsoever you’ll remember Backstrom and Semin had RIDICULOUS opportunities and were not covered at all for the sake of cutting off Ovechkin (who still had 5 goals).

Had almost any other goalie playing at the time been in net, there are very few that would have won one or both of those series. And as good as they were, you can’t say the same for O’Byrne, Bergeron, Hamrlik, Spacek, Subban, Gorges or Gil.

          • habsfan0 says:

            Not even…heavens…Carey Price??

          • Duracell3 says:

Not then. Maybe now. The rest of the team needs to be good enough to get into the playoffs to give him that chance.

I’m sure Scott Gomez is all over that though.

Perfectly Bilingual for the politically thinking fans. By the way Matheson is now 6’3, With a skating stride reminiscent of Paul Coffey.

Think the CH will have to move up to get him highly doubt he will be available in second round, He is high on the Bruins , Penguins, Blues
      and Blackhawks scouting departments.
Another Player of interest for the Habs should be, also off Dubuque Fighting Saints Zemgus Zirgensons a Center with size and skill, this kid is awesome, and I have a feeling he may drop into the second round even though he is projected as a first round pick, many reasons for players stock to drop and rise on draft day.

Agreed, the defense blocked an incredible number of shots. The forwards were extremely committed to the backcheck and everyone covered their men, barely any missed assignments in the d-zone. Not to mention Mike Cammalleri’s fantastic offensive performance, 13 goals in 19 games! Without his timely scoring the Habs would not have been able to play the defensive style that they did. Halak was sensational, made a lot of key stops and was great in the games we won but to say he did it on his own is ridiculous.
