Fans in Boston and New York may have seen their last home games of the season.
The latest Jaro Halak impression was furnished by Craig Anderson, who stopped 41 shots in Ottawa’s 2-0 win at Madison Square Garden.
Saturday afternoon, with our old friend Benoit Pouliot in the penalty box for a brain-dead slash in a tie game, Troy Brouwer beat Tim Thomas with a shot that good goaltenders stop.
Washington heads home with a 3-2 series lead and can send the Cup champs to the golf course on Sunday. And Patrice Bergeron is questionable for Game 6.
Elsewhere, José Theodore shut out the Devils 3-0 to move Florida within one win of advancing to the Eastern Conference semi-final.
In St. Louis, the Blues roared back from a 1-0 deficit to beat San Jose 3-1 and advance in the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
The Sunday tripleheader begins at noon in Philadelphia, where Pittsburgh will try to even up its series with the Flyers.
At 3 p.m. in Washington, the Caps will try to eliminate the Stanley Cup champions.
Then at 8, the Canucks are at home trying to stay alive against L.A.
The only two teams to make the playoffs every year since the lockout are the Red Wings and Sharks.
They’re both gone.
How about a Stanley Cup final between Florida and Nashville?
TV ratings through the roof … NOT!

If only the Hockey Gods can make sure that the Bruins and Rangers bite the dust. As for HNIC. I nearly fell off my chair when Ron said they would wait for Cherry’s take on Torez! Of course, why they even allow P.J. to speak is beyond me. I actually turn to TSN any chance I get. P.J. makes Cherry sound like Einstein.
And Pens. Then my playoff watching is pretty much done for this year.
Great goaltending in these playoffs makes me realize that Price in not in the same category as some of these guys. I have yet to see Price perform to the level of Holtby, Quick, Rinne, and Anderson. I see more Jocelyn Thibeault in Price, than Roy (or Theodore for that matter). Above average, but missing some of those mental intangibles that separates the playoff performers from the rest……
I know a couple other intangibles he is missing, a more physical defenceman, a 2nd line that can score, a team which can score in the shootout.
Yes, and even with those he would still find a way to be an average 910% save %; cough up a softie/game – mostly when the canadiens are trying to mount a comeback……
Not to nitpick or anything, .916, on a last place team.
Even .940 would not have made a difference, but let’s make crap up anyway.
Edit: tied with that other horrible goalie, Ryan Miller
.940% would have placed him in the elite……you know, where most keep stating he is already though the stats never justify it.
Clearly you don’t get that it’s a team stat.
Alfie, you’re grasping at straws, Price is not the problem.

Doug Wilson for Habs GM?
A lot of friends, good people abd all that in Ottawa, canadiab team, happy for them. There.
But the real reason I’m happy for them is that it makes me more optimistic about our beloved Habs. Ottawa was abysmal for a while to get those kids, and look at them now. Stone, Karlsson, Foligno, Butler, Greening, the kids came to play. They weathered the storm for a while and look at them.
And on the other side, we have the Habs who weren’t that great for some time and flat out sucked this year only. Finishing 28th in the league while having the 3rd even strength scorer, the highest shotblocking Dman, the 2nd PK and 1st PK on the road in the whole league. A young stud goalie, a high ceiling stud Dman, the best scorer of the W in regular season and the kid who broke a 15 yrs old record for assists in the W in the cupboards. I won’t talk about the last 2 1st rounder’s potential, but on top of that we’ll get a 3rd overall this year…….Ottawa didn’t have all that. We do. The future is not so bleak. PG’s shadow was, I’ll give you that.
My little fly in this ointment is the fact that the Preds won their opening series, so now our/their second rounder will be no better than the 53rd pick. It would have been between the 45th and 52nd pick (inclusive) had they lost.
Not really germane to your point, it just bugs me. The only thing I was rooting for was a Bruins loss and a Predators loss.

Bob Cole, well after the Jason Spezza goal, the second of the Senators mind you, compared to the no goals scored by New York: “And Ottawa looks like they’re going to take a 2-0 lead going back home.”

Cole’s job, if you must know, is to ensure viewers are paying attention. Anybody can see what’s happening on the TV, do you really need to have someone describe the play to you? No, but let’s face it, sometimes viewers’ attention wanders and Cole reels you back in by saying something so stupid that your mind detects before it drifts too far away.
I am getting the impression your frustration with Cole runs very deep my friend. This isn’t to say I don’t share the frustration, but you have provided ample evidence of said frustration LOL
Just trying to provide facts to the discussion, as opposed to unsubstantiated opinion. Kind of like when I was offering savant critiques of P.K. Subban’s play, with specific incidents of the previous game to illustrate the issues. For which I was roundly booed, since P.K. is indubitably a Norris Trophy winner five times over. In the Future. So we can’t say he has rocks in his thick thick skull right now. No coaching allowed.
As far as Mr. Cole, he is just not up to it anymore. He needs to retire, or be made to retire.
I may be biased, his voice reminds me of when I would be forced to watch the Canadiens in English because O’Keefe had successfully sued to have the Nordiques broadcast in the Montréal region on a number of Saturday nights. So it was either watch the Nordiques against the Whalers, or watch the Canadiens play Toronto, and this was the guy’s voice I grew to learn to hate.

Or the rules or the players’ names or the name of the rink …
It was mentioned during the Hot Stove discussion that the players’ union will be asking for a proper appeal process to be incorporated in the CBA so players can have their challenge of disciplinary action heard by a truly impartial body. I’m in favour, so long as the union stands behind members who have been the victim of vicious hits and would like to see stiffer penalties than ones handed out by the league.
If the NHL and NHLPA truly were a partnership, as the owners kept saying during and after the lockout, the players might be more amenable. Can’t blame them for not wanting anything of what the owners are selling.
The next negotiation is simply going to be about hammering down the players’ share of general revenue down to 50% or lower, no matter what Gary Bettman says, and despite the fact that fans contribute these revenues to see the players, not sclerotic owners.
As far as the players advocating for their own safety, it’s puzzling that they never see drug testing or player suspensions as contributing to a safer workplace. The NHLPA does have a legal duty to advocate strongly for their members when it comes to discipline, but they should welcome a framework where their members’ brain cells have a better chance of leaving the game intact.
———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?
http://relentlessineptitude.blogspot.com/
The players’ union has too narrow a focus. Its principal concern is to increase the wages of its members, when its paramount concern should be a safe working environment. It should also share responsibility in making that happen by taking its own disciplinary action against those members whose conduct jeopardizes the health and earning capacity of other members. What that action might be is open to conjecture. Perhaps something related to pensions …
In an ideal world, maybe. Unfortunately there’s very clear legal precedent that a union has a legal responsibility to defend its members to the best of its ability, in all situations. They can’t be involved in punishing its own members.
———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?
http://relentlessineptitude.blogspot.com/
Which is both its strength and weakness.
If punishment is beyond the union’s means, education certainly isn’t. Perhaps a program of moral instruction and a course in empathy might achieve the desired goal: players who play with a conscience.

I agree with the sentiments in the Torres discussions that the penalty (given recent rulings) was absolutely unfair. I also went and looked at the hit again and again. I hate to say this and this comment is only specific to this comparison. But the Torres hit was more of a hockey play in the flow of the game with less of a deliberate intent to injure than was Shane Weber’s. Chara’s hit on Max Pac was way worse with more evidence of malice aforethought.
And I dont give a damn if Shane Weber was retaliating for some cheap shot. It’s like saying you can go home and get a gun and shoot someone out of anger because his dog bit you.

The Luongo talk is a bunch of detail talk for them to say they know his contract details, big deal. At the end of the day if Vancouver tells Luongo he is no longer the #1 goalie and he is riding the pine next year he will want to be traded. The whole NTC beomes mute when a player with the ego of Luongo is told he isn’t good enough to play on their team.
Luongo will end up in Toronto if BB has anything to say about it.
I don’t think Luongo will want the pressure cooker of Toronto. I can see him trying to get a trade to another Southern team, perhaps Tampa?

Disagree Boone, clean hit IMO
“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”
Puck was gone for a few strides already, he targeted early and refused to let up. It is the mentality of this league where, as long as within the last 5 minutes the player has played the puck it is okay to nail him? Purpose of hitting is to remove the puck from the player. Puck was already long removed.
That’s how I see it as well…
__________________________
☞ Wow, that’s a nice lookin’ pair of Crocs!” Said no one ever.☜
Fair point, I just thought that he didnt leave his feet ot launch himself into the other player, he also let up and coasted into the hit while making shoulder to shoulder contact. When you “Finish your check”, I thought that was a hit after the player releases the puck .
“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”
Agree it is a league and a hockey problem. The whole finish your check concept to me has gotten out of control and should never have started.
I wish finishing your check was callled for interference and no longer took place.
After watching the playoff games the question has to be asked do you really need to have a 6 million dollar goalie to succeed…unless you pay 6 million for a goalie because he can play 70 games in the regular season but does not really give you any edge over 20 other goalies…the bottom 6 players for the majority of the playoff teams are way better suited to provide support for their teams than the habs bottom 6…
This may look like a game that the Rangers are playing at least on equal terms but they are making some stupidly desperate passes or defensemen pinching and the Sens are getting clean chances on Lundqvist. Rangers are lucky Sens havent capitalised yet.
Another example of no touch icing and why it is needed in the Florida New Jersey game, Kulikov to the dressing room.

Mike Boone says: “What a joke this network has become.”
They do a few things well. Their opening montages set to music are usually outstanding. Elliotte Friedman is excellent. So is Jim Hughson.
They just have to get rid of a lot of deadwood and fossils and neanderthals: Don Cherry, Mike Milbury, P.J. Stock, Bob Cole.
Then, be advocates for hockey being played fast and tough and fair, spectacular, fan-friendly hockey where talent and skill is prized, over size and churlishness at all costs.
If we must have a between-periods joke segment, let’s have Norm MacDonald and Brent Butt riffing on hockey and the issues of the day. I’d watch that, instead of switching channels to see what else is on.
———————————
How about it NHL? No fighting, just hockey?

so my favorite comments of the day belong to PJ Stock.
I’m paraphrasing here:
“So the problem with Chara is that he doesn’t play THAT WAY (read dirty) all the time. See, if played THAT WAY (cross checking and mugging players) all the time, he would NEVER be called for it”.
And then, the classic, describing the Boston Garden and the Boston fans: “this place needs the violence”.
So the “National” broadcaster is proud to promote a 2-bit, goof like PJ Stock, and we are surprised that the NHL has become Nascar on Ice??
Who is responsible at the CBC??
Who is calling the shots??
My tax dollars are being flushed down the toilet on the set of Hockey Night in Canada.
What a disgrace!!
And, if you haven’t figured it out yet, PJ Stock is very likely the clown that will be replacing Liberace once he retires.
Ed, I was in disbelief when PJ Puke made those comments, then worse Mclean and Hrudey basically endorsed his comments.
Believe it or not I actually agreed with most of what Cherry said today. At least he finally admitted there are idiots on the ice who are just headshot cheapshot artists.
I am more and more inclined that the instigator rule should be dropped, as nothing so far is preventing these devastating hits.
HiB, I know what you’re saying, but you can’t think like that. You can’t give in.
The NHL has to understand that the science of how head injuries occur and the way they aggravate when they occur consequently, as well as how the damage is irreversible and has consequences later in life, all that isn’t going away. The lawsuits are coming. They need to react and adjust.
Just because we’ve always bashed each other in the head in the past doesn’t mean it’s okay to do it. We didn’t use to wear seatbelts or refrain from smoking or drinking during pregnancy, now we know better. It used to be okay for people to be owned by other people. We don’t still do it because it’s tradition.
There is a simple, progressive solution to these issues. Punish any contact to the head. Two minutes for incidental contact, four for intentional, five and a game for attempt to injure, with the bar set pretty low. As in, a facewash is a four minute penalty, a punch/shove is five minutes.
To facilitate the enforcement, have a video referee on hand, all seeing, all knowing. Abracadabra, we don’t have cheap shots behind the play anymore. There isn’t a behind the play. The camera sees all.
The NFL is at least pretending it gets it. The NHL can’t resist much longer.

I hear ya, just have lost all faith in the “Deep Thinkers” of hockey ever cleaning it up the right way.
I also really liked it when Hrudey said Chara “should get more calls in his favour.”

Ed, I totally sympathize with your revulsion that P.J. Stock is on the air on the public broadcaster. It’s a misuse of an important arm of our government and contributor to our cultural identity.
Broadcasters get to use the airwaves as a result of a licence from the government. One of the stipulations of this licence is that they will broadcast programming that will benefit the public, and will be for society’s good. Surely the CBC is in breach of its licence by using the airwaves to propagate the noxious, injurious views of P.J. Stock, Mike Milbury and Don Cherry?

Do you know how much tax you pay towards the CBC? A couple of dollars? How much? Anybody know the contribution of individual taxpayers to the CBC on an annual basis? I bet it is much less than the proposed F-35 jet fighters.

Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.
I miss the play by play calling of Danny Gallivan and Bill Hewitt.
Bob Cole misses a lot of play by play as well.
Can’t argue with that!
Mike Boone called it: Cherry is riffing on the instigator rule again.
Use video referees. Illico presto, no need for goons to ‘police’ the game anymore.
