Looks like Timmins got a steal in the 5th round with Dietz (just tied a WHL record with 4 goals in a game by a defenseman). At the time he was drafted he wasn’t putting up a lot of points offensively, just a solid, big stay-at-home guy with a good plus-minus. Defensively responsible was his thing. But now he’s working on his offensive game and surprise – he’s got that too. Also has sandpaper, at 6’1″ and 200 lbs that’s a solid kid.
Seems to have a head on his shoulders. Here’s a passage from an interview going into this season:
McKeen’s: For people who don’t know you, or haven’t seen you play, how would you describe your game?
Dietz: I like to consider myself a stay-at-home defenseman. I take care of my end first, if there’s and opportunity to jump into the rush, I go but try and stay low-risk and make sure I play good defense first.
McKeen’s: I didn’t get a chance to catch you very often last season as I generally scout the QMJHL but I thought you did have some upside offensively. You carried the puck up the ice fairly well a few times and created some opportunities. Would you like to bring out this part of your game a little more next season as you gain a little more experience?
Dietz: Yeah, I would like to, and as I get more confident with the puck, I hope to. Confidence is huge. It doesn’t matter what kind of skill you have if you don’t have the confidence to use it so that helps quite a bit.

Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
I don’t see why the Habs can’t be sellers AND try for the playoffs. Sam Pollock used to routinely trade veterans for draft picks, that’s mainly how he accumulated five 1st overall draft picks from 1963-1980, without tanking. It’s just good asset management. Between the salary cap, draft lottery and waiver rules which promote parity, it’s one of the few ways to gain a competitive advantage. As long as you have the depth in the organization to replace the player, the impact to the team is minimal. The Habs have lots of bodies on defense right now, so moving Gill is a good example of how to stockpile assets while minimizing the impact to the team overall.
You only have to look to Ottawa from last year for an example. They pretty much sold everything they could, addressed an organizational weakness by getting a goalie, then started winning more than before they were sellers. When you factor in Timmins’ talent for finding gems in the later rounds, it is even more important for Montreal to have many draft picks every year. I think they can continue with moving Moen and Campoli with minimum impact to the team. Moving AK will hurt the team because they really have no one to replace him in the system, so I would try to sign him unless the offer is too good to pass up.
Nice post Chuck!! Frankie the Cube. He gave a lotta effort but sadly played on an edition of Habs that really lacked heart…. not that we’re all NAG right bout now
Just saw on TSN stats guy: Gorges 1st in NHL for blocked shots, and Emelin 4th for hits!!
I think I know what Gauthier is up to: addition by subtraction! He knows that an outright, deliberate ‘tank’ would never fly in Montreal, so he’s got to be subversive about it. He needs to lose games to improve his draft position, but can’t make it appear as though he’s actually trying to lose.
Think about it: what has bee the team’s strength all year? The penalty killing. And who was one of the most effective players while short-handed? Hall Gill.
So Gauthier is approached by Nashville, who inquire about Big Hal. He plays coy, acting like he’s happy with the big guy, forcing the Preds to up their offer to a 2nd round pick AND two prospects… then pulls the trigger.
In an instant, the PK is weaker and will probably cost the team a few extra wins, thus allowing the team to draft higher. And he’s now got the 2nd-rounder and two prospects in his back pocket… and one a Geoffrion, no less. The only way that gets better is if the kid’s last name was Richard.
As an added bonus, Gill is a UFA, and Pierre could send him on his way with a handshake, wink, and an understanding that he’d be welcome to re-sign with the Habs in the offseason.
“Oh, and Mr. Gill… while you’re enjoying the playoffs in Nashville, please be sure to have a chat with their other two UFA defensemen, Frankie Bouillion and Ryan Suter, and let them know that my door is always open.”
So one seemingly insignificant trade could net the Habs:
A higher 1st round draft choice
A second-round draft choice
2 prospects, one of which will be an instant hit and wear #57
At least 2 UFA defensemen, giving us a top-6 of:
Of course, the only fly in the ointment is if the team rallies in the face of adversity and against all odds starts stringing a bunch of wins together, thus putting the high 1st-round pick in jeopardy; we may have seen the start of that tonight. If that’s the case, expect another trade should they win their next game… with another UFA given the ‘wink’. Pack your bags (but only with enough clothes for a couple of months) Andrei Kostitsyn.
This is a better team with Cunney than it is with Martin. Why? The simple fact that they’re more aggressive, more physical and score more. Of course the D isn’t as good, but that could be fixed with actually icing an NHL caliber back end. It’s amazing we’re 6 points out with Campoli, Kaberle, Weber and Diaz on D.
Please: can someone educate me?
Suppose the Habs trade Gomez for a 1st and 2nd round pickks, or 2 2nd round picks, but continue to pay Gomez salary, either totally or only part 1-would the NHL allow it? and 2- the amount the Habs dont pay, would count against the cap?
Thanks
Is this a serious question? No one wants Gomez in a trade and if they did, his salary goes with him. If he clears waivers however and comes back up and he’s claimed, we’re on the hook for 2/3 of his salary if I remember correctly.
This will keep the excitement going for a little longer, but it will take a miracle of tremendous proportion. We’re 6 pts behind Toronto, but by the time we play them they may be not in 8th place anymore. Washington and Winnipeg won tonight in regulation. Tampa Bay and Islanders are 2pts back with 2 games in hand.
That said, I understand why management is going for it. No team in the league is tanking at the moment, including Columbus and Carolina, though i have a feeling it will start pretty soon. This (once) proud franchise couldn’t be the first one to throw the towel with more than 20 games to go! Would not have looked good…
I hate to say it but the goat got agood deal for Gill. Gomez,White andAK line was great espically White. No fear and patting the ass of a sabre after crosschecking crap out of him
But, highest priced 4th line in league.
Better picks by RC and where are the Price bashers tonite? Hello where are you guys?
Also we did not look any worse for wear without big Hal on the PK and actually faster on defense.
Folks we are 6 points back of the Leafs and we still play them twice. DON’T STOP BELIEVING!!!

Apparently the Sabres did not get the memo to shoot low-blocker on Price. Good for us! Put those 2 pts on the pile and move on. Hopefully the play better on Sunday, not great hockey in that one. No pictures on the scorecard,I guess (hopefully I didn’t jinx ‘em with the golf analogy!)

Next game is sunday at 6. But you’re right 30 min is a lot, he handled it well though. PK has been playing well. Better get him the good oats though, that horse will need his vitamins in the next 6 weeks

Sorry to be a downer guys but Saturday game at 6pm and P.K played prox 30 mins…. What is RC supposed to do for defense tomorrow.
they don’t play till sunday
Thank God! I thought game was tomorrow and early too.
there are no 4pt back-to-back games this month. This coming March is a killer, they have three 4 pointer games and its a consecutive Fri-Sat schedule:
Mar 16 – Ottawa
Mar 17 – NYI
Mar 23 – Ottawa
Mar 24 – Flyers
Mar 30 – NYR
Mar 31 – Caps
