You are here: Home » Boone » Liveblog: Another blown lead, but 4-3 shootout win
The Canadiens had no shots in overtime and only 19 in the game.
But they’ll get at least two more.
Looks like Timmins got a steal in the 5th round with Dietz (just tied a WHL record with 4 goals in a game by a defenseman). At the time he was drafted he wasn’t putting up a lot of points offensively, just a solid, big stay-at-home guy with a good plus-minus. Defensively responsible was his thing. But now he’s working on his offensive game and surprise – he’s got that too. Also has sandpaper, at 6’1″ and 200 lbs that’s a solid kid.
Seems to have a head on his shoulders. Here’s a passage from an interview going into this season:
McKeen’s: For people who don’t know you, or haven’t seen you play, how would you describe your game?
Dietz: I like to consider myself a stay-at-home defenseman. I take care of my end first, if there’s and opportunity to jump into the rush, I go but try and stay low-risk and make sure I play good defense first.
McKeen’s: I didn’t get a chance to catch you very often last season as I generally scout the QMJHL but I thought you did have some upside offensively. You carried the puck up the ice fairly well a few times and created some opportunities. Would you like to bring out this part of your game a little more next season as you gain a little more experience?
Dietz: Yeah, I would like to, and as I get more confident with the puck, I hope to. Confidence is huge. It doesn’t matter what kind of skill you have if you don’t have the confidence to use it so that helps quite a bit.
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
The year before our 5th rounder was Gallagher too.
“They don’t hang Conference Championship Banners from the rafters here”
I give full credit to Lucky Toque.
And for Randy Ladouceur for giving shit to Gomez and unleashing his inner goal-scoring monster.
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
I don’t see why the Habs can’t be sellers AND try for the playoffs. Sam Pollock used to routinely trade veterans for draft picks, that’s mainly how he accumulated five 1st overall draft picks from 1963-1980, without tanking. It’s just good asset management. Between the salary cap, draft lottery and waiver rules which promote parity, it’s one of the few ways to gain a competitive advantage. As long as you have the depth in the organization to replace the player, the impact to the team is minimal. The Habs have lots of bodies on defense right now, so moving Gill is a good example of how to stockpile assets while minimizing the impact to the team overall.
You only have to look to Ottawa from last year for an example. They pretty much sold everything they could, addressed an organizational weakness by getting a goalie, then started winning more than before they were sellers. When you factor in Timmins’ talent for finding gems in the later rounds, it is even more important for Montreal to have many draft picks every year. I think they can continue with moving Moen and Campoli with minimum impact to the team. Moving AK will hurt the team because they really have no one to replace him in the system, so I would try to sign him unless the offer is too good to pass up.
Textbook give-and-go from Kaberle. High hockey IQ. If only his EQ were as high.
If Eller were pronounced “Ell-ay”, Larry would be #2 with a bullet!
Nice post Chuck!! Frankie the Cube. He gave a lotta effort but sadly played on an edition of Habs that really lacked heart…. not that we’re all NAG right bout now
Just saw on TSN stats guy: Gorges 1st in NHL for blocked shots, and Emelin 4th for hits!!
(btw what happened to Habs Prof?)
I think I know what Gauthier is up to: addition by subtraction! He knows that an outright, deliberate ‘tank’ would never fly in Montreal, so he’s got to be subversive about it. He needs to lose games to improve his draft position, but can’t make it appear as though he’s actually trying to lose.
Think about it: what has bee the team’s strength all year? The penalty killing. And who was one of the most effective players while short-handed? Hall Gill.
So Gauthier is approached by Nashville, who inquire about Big Hal. He plays coy, acting like he’s happy with the big guy, forcing the Preds to up their offer to a 2nd round pick AND two prospects… then pulls the trigger.
In an instant, the PK is weaker and will probably cost the team a few extra wins, thus allowing the team to draft higher. And he’s now got the 2nd-rounder and two prospects in his back pocket… and one a Geoffrion, no less. The only way that gets better is if the kid’s last name was Richard.
As an added bonus, Gill is a UFA, and Pierre could send him on his way with a handshake, wink, and an understanding that he’d be welcome to re-sign with the Habs in the offseason.
“Oh, and Mr. Gill… while you’re enjoying the playoffs in Nashville, please be sure to have a chat with their other two UFA defensemen, Frankie Bouillion and Ryan Suter, and let them know that my door is always open.”
So one seemingly insignificant trade could net the Habs:
A higher 1st round draft choice
A second-round draft choice
2 prospects, one of which will be an instant hit and wear #57
At least 2 UFA defensemen, giving us a top-6 of:
Markov – Subban
Gorges – Emelin
Gill – Suter/Boullion
Of course, the only fly in the ointment is if the team rallies in the face of adversity and against all odds starts stringing a bunch of wins together, thus putting the high 1st-round pick in jeopardy; we may have seen the start of that tonight. If that’s the case, expect another trade should they win their next game… with another UFA given the ‘wink’. Pack your bags (but only with enough clothes for a couple of months) Andrei Kostitsyn.
Is Ryan White the second coming of Chris Nilan?
I love that guy!
Mike Keane is more appropriate.
2 more goals on PP today? that’s like 4 in last 2 games, no?
team 990 giving props to gomez tune it rite now
President of the Scott Gomez Fan Club
(I support Scott Gomez)
Good win tonight.
This is a better team with Cunney than it is with Martin. Why? The simple fact that they’re more aggressive, more physical and score more. Of course the D isn’t as good, but that could be fixed with actually icing an NHL caliber back end. It’s amazing we’re 6 points out with Campoli, Kaberle, Weber and Diaz on D.
I support Ryan White. We need him in duplicate.
i support your support of ryan white gomez plays well with whiter
Darren Pang wants Gomez to play the game the White way!
Please: can someone educate me?
Suppose the Habs trade Gomez for a 1st and 2nd round pickks, or 2 2nd round picks, but continue to pay Gomez salary, either totally or only part 1-would the NHL allow it? and 2- the amount the Habs dont pay, would count against the cap?
Is this a serious question? No one wants Gomez in a trade and if they did, his salary goes with him. If he clears waivers however and comes back up and he’s claimed, we’re on the hook for 2/3 of his salary if I remember correctly.
@Matt Jordan: there is definately a Scott Gomez club… but entry to the club is VERY exclusive…. even Molson is on the outside looking in
We finally showed Ryan Miller who’s boss.
Good win Boys. Devils are next.
Always good to save money….. but Im doing it now with a extra small reason: maybe hang out in mtl watching hockey and enjoying myself
if you don’t want to spend money, then don’t spend money
This will keep the excitement going for a little longer, but it will take a miracle of tremendous proportion. We’re 6 pts behind Toronto, but by the time we play them they may be not in 8th place anymore. Washington and Winnipeg won tonight in regulation. Tampa Bay and Islanders are 2pts back with 2 games in hand.
That said, I understand why management is going for it. No team in the league is tanking at the moment, including Columbus and Carolina, though i have a feeling it will start pretty soon. This (once) proud franchise couldn’t be the first one to throw the towel with more than 20 games to go! Would not have looked good…
We play washington next friday night so we control what happens I BELIEVE
is there actually a Scott Gomez fan club
And I’ll be there, and Florida, and TB. ROADTRIP. Can’t wait
wow is no one excited we just won, all i hear is negativtiy, we could be watching history ENJOY THE RIDE
I hate to say it but the goat got agood deal for Gill. Gomez,White andAK line was great espically White. No fear and patting the ass of a sabre after crosschecking crap out of him
But, highest priced 4th line in league.
Better picks by RC and where are the Price bashers tonite? Hello where are you guys?
Also we did not look any worse for wear without big Hal on the PK and actually faster on defense.
No Guts No Glory
I hear ya Mr. Chomps…Wonders never cease.
Habs: 11 out of a possible 14 points.
we need the nux to be the leafs and We need to beat the devils sunday and we’d be 4 points out
What a bunch of negative A holes on this site. The team won enjoy
who’s being negative I BELIEVE
I was thinking the same thing. But I like your wording better.
” Don’t Stop Believing”
Don’t let the wultures getcha.
Folks we are 6 points back of the Leafs and we still play them twice. DON’T STOP BELIEVING!!!
GO HABS GO! 2011-12 is probably not our year!

The three stooges strike: Gomez, Kaberle and Campoli. Good gravy. If they can do it again tomorrow then that would be something. Here comes the 14th pick.
Nyuk nyuk nyuk…wise guy, eh?!
“Wins? We don’t need no stinkin’ wins!”
Curly Campoli, Larry Gomez, and Moe Kaberle
What? No schemp?
Moe is way too truculent to be Kaberle. Kaberle is the anti-Moe.
Kaberle, Campoli and Gomez? Surely it’s a trade and not the Habs goal scorers tonight?
Apparently the Sabres did not get the memo to shoot low-blocker on Price. Good for us! Put those 2 pts on the pile and move on. Hopefully the play better on Sunday, not great hockey in that one. No pictures on the scorecard,I guess (hopefully I didn’t jinx ‘em with the golf analogy!)
Shooting low blocker side – that’s definitely a CP weakness to exploit. Shhhhh…
LETS GO CANUCKS
Subban was in another space-time continuum tonight. Something has really changed inside this guy. And the TOI? Good Lord! How can he get enough rest to be ready for tomorrow’s game? What an animal!
we dont play tmrrw bra
Yeah…have to enjoy each win as they have been too infrequent this season. Has someone finally convinced Price to come out and challenge the shooters? Maybe next he will even try a poke-check…not that it worked tonight for Miller…Go Habs.
Tank I say! Tank!
“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “
Tanking is for losers.
Trust the hio regulars, you couldn’t ask for a bigger loser then the guy you just responded to.He might know what end of the hockey stick is used to shoot the puck with and perhaps where players stand for a faceoff. But that is pretty much where his hockey smarts ends. But if you want to know all about grocery store coupons,he’s your guy.
This is such a direct opposite game to last Wednesday’s Bruin match-up…
Sorry to be a downer guys but Saturday game at 6pm and P.K played prox 30 mins…. What is RC supposed to do for defense tomorrow.
they don’t play till sunday
Thank God! I thought game was tomorrow and early too.
there are no 4pt back-to-back games this month. This coming March is a killer, they have three 4 pointer games and its a consecutive Fri-Sat schedule:
Mar 16 – Ottawa
Mar 17 – NYI
Mar 23 – Ottawa
Mar 24 – Flyers
Mar 30 – NYR
Mar 31 – Caps
Game is Sunday…and man , P.K. is playing very good hockey!
Next game is sunday at 6. But you’re right 30 min is a lot, he handled it well though. PK has been playing well. Better get him the good oats though, that horse will need his vitamins in the next 6 weeks
Way to go Mr. Softie! Your detractors are going to double up on the medication tonight. LOLZ
That DD has more moves per cubic inch than anyone.
see my blog at http://noroomatthedump.blogspot.com/
Excellent. Happy to see them win this one.
As in victory, success, conquer, overcome…
6 POINTS BACK LETS DO THIS
damn those 2 pts. we gave to Carolina on Monday…..ya I know the whole season’s been a mess and there’s a lot of games we should have won, but man those missed 2 pts. we gave up on Monday sure hurt right now. Oh well, I love this team, lots of optimism for the future.
GO HABS GO!!!!
Finally, the shootout works for the Hab’s advantage. Price just solid, and Patches with DD sealing the deal, love it.
Maybe if the Habs do more shootouts, they might get used to doing this and all 29 teams would rather think twice if they want to go head-to-head.
Kaberle, Gomez, and campoli score and the Habs win in a shootout….wtf?!?!
I just came home, turned to ESPN.com to see the score, and had the exact reaction as you!
▭ ◌ ▭ ◌ ▭ ◌ ▭ ◌ ▭
Scouting is subjective.
I say, this is the most bizarre game they have ever played and won since all 3 who scored are real f*** ups during this season! Also, the guy who scored for the shootout is a 5’7 dude named David Desharnais.
5’4 barefoot I’d say. Great player though!
Right on Novahab… but I think the officiating sucks system wide. We should start a website reviewing all the bad calls every night. We’d have our work cut out for us!
Promote the Youth, Support From The Veterans and Remember the Heritage!
You think the reffing is bad now wait & see what goes on in the playoffs as it is going to get very ugly……
I just reversed the PVR; just to be certain that really happened
HA HA! I did the same thing!
Slick move by Desharnais
We win We win
Good job CW Good SO picks..
Go Habs Go!
“Emelin’s the real deal.”
OBVIOUS ending. WE win in a shootout. Gomez scores, Campoli scores and Kaberle scores.
What team is this?
some of the posters here must be having conniptions.
The Pariahs score AND we win.
Worst scenario possible for them. But oh sweet for the rest of us.
With apologies to Pete Townsend – The kids are alright!
That was close! If it wasn’t for Desharnais, they could have lost this game.
Once agian if I was DD I would pick up the puck and give it to the refs. Then say F$%k you, you crooks it didn;t work tonight.
So the Canadiens will draft 10-16 position …can’t they do anything right.
We won in a shoot out?
NICE!! Shoot out win! Price looked better maybe it’s the new helmet, MaxPac and DD got’r done for us.
He looked ‘better’ because they actually managed to score in a shootout and he won. It’s tougher for a goalie to win a shootout if his team can’t score any goals (go figure)
goal scorer’s Kaberle, Gomez, Campoli and then we win in a shootout..go figure
What a day for the Habs — shoot-out win, contributions from Gomez, Kaberle, Campoli, PG makes a solid deal.
If i didn’t se it with my own eyes I would never have belive it.
HABS PERFECT IN SHOOTOUT??
THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!!
AK can’t get a break………
Open-mindedness is not a skull fracture
I wonder if it’s in the player’s heads as much as it is in ours?……the dreaded SO
Nothing is ever going to change with these crooked ref until a coach takes a fits. Attention has to be brought forward over this crap. The Rangers are in first becuase the refs are afraid of Tortorella.
Diaz, Weber and Budaj.
Well thats it!! Shootouts are a given to our opponents
Vanek is an automatic goal
no extra point please
Heroic? Playing for a point? Not really….
So…..are we mad if RC send our 3 snipers ?
Open-mindedness is not a skull fracture
