Budaj

Canadiens never quit.
Give them that.
With a shortened bench, playing their second game in two nights, they made a third-period game of it.

But the D was dreadful.

Ryan White has fallen off the map, it’s easy to forget him when listing the many injury woes the habs have faced so far this season.

I think I know the answer to this question but is there any idea on the time frame for his return? I haven’t heard any news on him in a while.

My votes for the All-Geriatric Team…

G- Nikolai Khabibulin (38 years old)
    D – Nicklas Lidstrom (41 years old)
    D – Chris Pronger (37 years old)
LW – Jaromir Jagr (39 years old)
    C – Patrik Elias (35 years old)
RW – Teemu Selanne (41 years old)

Are those guys ever going to play like they are old?

Speaking of which, want to feel really old? Saku Koivu is now the second oldest center in the NHL, behind only Jason Arnott. Pavel Datsyuk is the 14th oldest center, while Scott Gomez is the 20th oldest center.

Time flies. I don’t like it at all when guys who I remember see breaking into the league are now retiring as grizzled veterans. :(

Note to all you whining Occupiers…….if you supported any other team, you would still find fault b/c every team has weaknesses and makes mistakes. Wake up to the modern era of the NHL. Any team can win on any given night against anyone. There’s no magic formula to it. It makes a better league……although IMO too many teams. The key is to be good when it counts…..the season is a perpetual build to the playoffs. No different than a Cup Champion is a perpetual build over years. Decisions are made based on that premise. There no longer exists a dominant club or a dynasty….won’t happen even if Toe was alive and Bowman was in his prime behind the bench. Learn to live with it.

    Re: budaj

A loss is never on one guy. But In a league where 1 goal often makes the difference, allowing 2 softies is unacceptable. He wasn’t good enough.

  6. The_Franchise31 says:

Budaj might have let in to weak goals but more a few huge saves in the first so you can’t blame him

  7. Chris says:

Seriously…Ken Hitchcock should just get signed to 1-year deals.

The Blues are now 4-0-1 in the 5 games they’ve played since Hitchcock took over, and have only conceded 5 goals. All you poolies with Elliott and Halak ought to be mighty happy.

Bottom Line amongst those of us who might actually played the game at a reasonable level is tha JM is a joke!

  13. twilighthours says:

Gomez may or may not have played 20+ mins. These details are inconsequential. What matters is that he has sucked in nearly every minute he has played.

  14. habfanacrossthed says:

Sure the defense wasn’t the best, yet they fought back. Didn’t catch the third period. How did Cammy play in the third period? Eller must have no confidence. JM puts him on the wing, meaning no faceoffs for him. (Yes Gomer dominated with his 8 fow and 2 fol) Really though Lars busts his ass, gets a penalty. The result reduced minutes on the ice.

…all I know is We played better without Him than with Him
…I think all the instability on the lines keeps Us from Our true potential
…I am saying this with reason, not hate …either for JM nor Gomer (both of Whom I respect and like personally)

I didn’t see the game but judging from the comments JM and Gomez were once again lightning rods, with their critics and the critics’ critics out in full force. If the same dynamic shows up at the Summit — and why shouldn’t it? — I suggest we choose sides at Hurley’s and do a scene from West Side Story.
Oh, wait, that was the Jets and the Sharks. Sorry, wrong NHL teams.

  22. SeriousFan09 says:

Andrew, Gomez can hold the puck in the O zone all day, nothing happens when he is there with it so it becomes meaningless. He can not score and it is hard to claim he is creating chances others can but have not finished on. Eller is the man to play, Gomez can gain the zone on a rush but that is about all he can do anymore. He is not even playing like he is worth 3.5 let alone the impossible mark of 7.

    • SmartDog says:

Don’t confuse Andrew with things like points, goals, plus-minus, real scoring chances, or the ability to make a play that matters.

He’s got a whole battery of micro-statistics that show that Gomez FREAKIN’ ROCKS!!! He woulda scored 3 or 4 if Eller and DD weren’t taking up his ice time. Word to your mutha baby!!

Who is “AC” and why should I care that he is joining the flock of sheep (baa! baa!) ripping Gomez–who had a very good game for anyone who, you know, actually watched the play.

  24. Habfan10912 says:

We need to get friggin healthy. Why do we always suffer more injuries then other teams? Why does it seem like our injuries take longer to heal? Why when we get the flu we are hospitalized? For cripes sake look who we have playing on defence. Its a miracle we are a 500 club.

  25. habs-hampton says:

Only caught the last minutes of the game, but I see a lot of people talking about how great a game Gomez played, but I look at the line score, and he’s 0 0 0 and a -2.

Give it up people, that’s a great game? The expectations on him have dropped so low, that if he doesn’t score an “own-goal” he should be 1st star.

    Time’s up, JM must go!

  26. HabFanSince72 says:

The Martin Derangement Syndrome sufferers are out in full force.

Can’t really blame him. Four rookies on D, back to back games, and a keeper who lets in 4 on the first 19 shots. I’d say Martin is actually doing a good job with what he has. We’re hanging in there until Marky returns. Then we’ll see.

You can however blame the Goat for signing a goalie who was statistically the 60th best in the league for each of his last two full seasons. A goalie who was deemed less desirable than Brian Elliott.

That’s 60th best in a 30 team league, where each team only has two goalies at a time.

How about PK went out of his way to tip one into his own net, and Budaj went for a stroll and forgot to close the door. Add in a little “Emelin stunk the joint out” and you’ve got the basic recap of a game that shoulda bin a W. Most nights when four goals are allowed we ain’t gonna win, regardless of how we juggle the forward lines. This is not an NHL calibre defence, and yikes, here come the Rags and Broons.

Did anyone REALLY expect the Habs to beat the defending Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders, particularly the way the Islanders are playing? Come on!

Not sure why Eller was benched in the 3rd period and Gomez was out there doing pirouettes in the offensive zone..Sure, the guy can skate fast and all, but what does he actually create after gaining the blueline? Nothing..

Eller works hard every shift..He may make a mistake or two throughout the game, but he has been the better player,. by far..

JM’s coaching strategy of not letting the kids play in crucial situations will stunt their growth..Gomez has been given chance after chance only to fail..What does JM have to lose by giving Eller the chance of tying this one up? \

BAH!! Losing to the NYI with weak goal tending and coaching ineptness really slices my cake..

Come on! This team is badly coached and kind’a sucks. This season has eight and out written all over it at best.

  35. gmur says:

Gomez is not going to score 20 goals anymore… maybe not even 10 goals. But I don’t see his play being negative for the team. He’s not producing points, but he’s not a liability either. That’s not exactly a description becoming of a player who makes big $, but that’s the deal right now.

  36. Stev.R says:

Or they want to sign them now so they dn’t have to do it later and risk losing them.

  39. gmur says:

At least give the team a chance to get Campoli and Markov back. The defence is doing well enough, but those are two solid, puck-moving defencemen.

  40. HardHabits says:

    AC ripping Gomez.

  41. HabsFansince49 says:

    Bench Eller! Over play Gomez!
    Now that’s great coaching!
How long must we suffer this guy Martin?

  42. sampson12 says:

What does the signing of Gallagher mean? He’ll stay in Vancouver, right? and the contract kicks in next season??

  43. Gomez is such an easy target for anyone who doesn’t pay attention. Nevermind that he played a great game, went 80% on faceoffs and had the puck in the offensive zone every shift. We didn’t win so it must be his fault because he makes lots o’ money!

    • JoeC says:

What to you mean? Gomez won some faceoffs that lead to NOTHING, he was a negative in the game. Eller was a centre and a positive , but for some reason Gomez kept taking the draws instead of Eller, Eller sets up a goal, and GOMEZ gets more icetime. Ya Gomez played one hell of a game, my ass what game did you watch

      • Gomez was dominating play all game. Eller was too. And for the record Eller was still -1. The fact that everyone is picking out Gomez as the guy who’s ice time should be reduced shows that they don’t give a crap what actually happened, everything is preconceived bias. Meanwhile DD had a horrifically bad game, but kept getting ice and no one says squat.

It’s bias, plain and simple, and it’s effin’ sad.

What game did you watch that he was dominating play all game?? AC is ripping him apart, everyone else sais the same thign but you say Gomez played greaT? wow, how drunk where you watching this game? Hell i woulda rather seen Darche on the last minute then GOMEZ, WAIT!! Price should have just grabbed a stick and his pads and skated on the point for it too, Price woulda been more “dominating” this game then Gomez was.

I WAS WRONG GOMEZ WAS A MINUS 2, DOMINATING

        • Marc10 says:

I thought Gomer did well too. But your bias against DD is showing. Where was the praise for DD against Carolina.

Oh yeah… right. Different rules for you I guess.

          • For what exactly should DD be getting praise for from last night? He had a secondary assist that bounced off him… And? He was good against Buffalo.

It’s not bias with DD. I have no problem with him as a player. I have a problem with him getting ice time he doesn’t deserve, and people praising him for the exact same thing they accuse Gomez of doing.

3 times tonight DD had an open net, and passed it right to an Isles defender. THREE TIMES.

AB, the probably isn’t that he is playing, it’s that he is playing instead of Eller, who may not be the puck carrier that Gomez is, but works harder, passes and shoots better, and creates more chances.

    • HardHabits says:

JHC AB. Gomez’ only saving grace is he won face-offs. He should have gotten of the ice immediately after the face-off.

      • Only saving grace? He was creating scoring chances left and right while constantly keeping the team on offense when he was on the ice.

The only team he created scoring chances for was the Islanders. He had nothing to do with Gionta’s PP goal other than being in on the after goal celebration hug. I don’t know what game you were watching but he sucks ass. Horrible. His play is degenerating. He doesn’t provide offense. All his plays lead to nothing.

    • Sap Anderson says:

It’s amazing to me that a man who fancies himself as a hockey connaisseur can continue to defend Gomez’s play… the guy has completely and totally lost it, and it’s not coming back anytime soon. He has to go
