Peter Regin beat Carey Price in the Shootout to give the home team the win.
The hero was goaltender Ben Bishop: 44 saves in regulation and OT, four more in the Shootout.
Canadiens, who hit the metal behind Bishop five times, get a well-earned point to stay atop the Eastern Conference.
The Shootout:
Silfverberg: Goal (he’s 3-for-3 in Shootouts this season
Galchenyuk: Save (easy)
Daniel F.: Glove save
DD: Goal! Brilliant
Turris: Save
Gallagher: Save
Daugavins: Post!
Gionta: Save
Regin: Goal! And a beauty
Plekanec: Save
Don’t forget to check out Hockey Inside/Out’s new Play-By-Play feature: all the relevant game stats, in real time, plus the liveblog and reader Comments. It’s not available on mobile phones yet, but that’s coming soon.

Im taking an extremist approach and blaming the shootout loss on Therrien. There’s nothing you can do in hockey when you run into a hot goalie, the Habs dominated like an NHL team should to an AHL team but scoring indicated otherwise, so it’s tough to blame on the players for not scoring. Price well he played fine, always worrisome when you get a shot every 5 minutes because you’re so cold. But when I saw 0-for Gio and the anti-shootout Plekanec step up I felt hopeless, Therrien’s gotta know these two can’t score ever in a shootout, heck I’d take Marek Malik shooting over them.
It strikes me as odd that we don’t have more Shootout stats being shown to us on a broadcast. In baseball, just about any hitter/pitcher duel has a graphic “Bautista is 12/50 against CC Sabathia on overcast Sundays in May …”. What about shooters and goalies, shooters and their overall scoring %, goalies and their Shootout save % vs. league, team, player, we’re still very much in the stone-ages when it comes to TV/Radio and hockey stats. Yes, I know those numbers are available to us on-line for geeks like me, but they don’t become meaningful unless the networks start incorporating them.
Loving the Habs since 1965
Is it me or are Pleks and Gionta missing Bourque? (No offense to one of the team’s MVPs Prust)
I don’t really think so. Bourque has been good this year, and the sooner he’s back the better, but the Habs dominated tonight without him.

Any word on how bad his flu is?

Therrien said he’d miss the Toronto game as well, so pretty bad I am thinking.

I think so too. Bourque’s net-crashing and size mess up the D, creating space.

Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
The Habs played a great game tonight. They dinged the posts enough times, had 45 shots on goal and numerous quality scoring chances. They ran into a hot goalie and Ben Bishop is the real deal.
The Habs had a record of 6-2-0 in their first 8 games and have a record of 6-0-2 in their last 8 games. The 3 games in between give a record of 0-2-1. Is 12-2-2 the trend and 0-2-1 the anomaly? Too soon to say, but it’s looking like.
The one cause for concern is that even though the Habs have not had any regulation losses outside their division they are 2-4-2 in the NE. It stands to reason that to win the division it helps if not is necessary to have a winning record intra-divisionally.
A big challenge is coming up as 10 of the next 14 games are on the road. I like what Damphousse surmised, that the Habs have the scoring spread out over a few lines which makes those road games not so disadvantageous in terms of line matching and not having the last change. Nevertheless this next stretch of road games will give Hab fans a good indication of what this current line-up is made of. It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff responds and what adjustment if any are made. The good news is that the Habs are currently 4-1-2 on the road.
Good post. Hopefully they can stay healthy…especially on D. If so, they should be able to survive and stay in playoff position (fingers crossed).
Really good game by the Habs, you’re right. Fluke loss. 12 points out of the ten road games would be good, anything more would be bonus. If they can play likentheybdid tonight, it’s doable.

Certified for real.
Bishop played great. Price had a brain fart. Other than that, it was almost like a playoff game. And others complain about goaltending in a 2-1 SO loss? Insane!
http://calshabsongparodies.weebly.com
This team is worthy of 100% support. Another solid effort, a damn good group.
Like I said Prust doesn’t need to fight cement head he is a real player not a knuckle dragger
We dominated that game and deserved the two points. Cube has been playing awesome and warrants a lot of praise for his tough, smart work. He steamrolled at least three Sens tonight. Gally73 also had a strong outing, setting up in front of the crease and getting involved.
On the other hand, PK’s play was frustrating to watch — overhandling the puck, not making simple plays to advance the puck, and not holding the zone. I’m a PK fan, but this was not a good game at all for him. Gio continues to be invisible and, given his salary, icetime, and “C”, a disappointment in my view.
PK came dangerously close to making the kinds of moves that cost games last season. Looks like its time to pull in the reins a bit, or how shall we say… make him a better thoroughbred.
Imagine if they made a movie about the Habs or a hockey team, whatever, and the main plot was about PK or a player like him and his relationship with the new coach, MT (or again a guy like MT), who gets a chance at redemption and must prove himself a winner. The two personalities clash at times, but in the end, they make each other better persons. In the part of the story where they embrace each other and embark on the great personal journey, there is an epic montage of the two pushing each other to be better, and at first its a struggle but by the end of the inspiring montage song, they are all smiles and wins. Makes me cry every time.
Fitting song for tonight…

The guy that was talking about trolls that don’t know hockey. come on. It’s common sense. Almost twice as many shots as ottawa and lose. I don’t care how many goal post the Habs hit. That’s good goal-tending. Not knocking Price. The pucks that got by him were good shots.
I don’t like this shoot out BS. Two teams that played hard all night and one has to lose because of a break away. that’s what it really is. a forward in the clear against the goalie and the lucky one wins.
Oh the fans love it. will they don’t like it so much when the playoffs come around and some weaker team makes it in due to the lucky points they collected during the regular season in shoot outs. it’s not about skill.
I see all kinds of skilled players that don’t score in shootouts. some guy that scores 3-goals a year wins it. Give them a point each if still tied after over time. Both teams deserve it.
By the way. a good game tonight till the SO ruined it and it’s not because the Habs loss.
All that was missing was Prust-Neil round 2. Seems that Therrien has put a stop to all the scraps. Much more earlier this season.
At least these last 8 games including tonight, the Habs are playing like Blackhawks: getting points any which way.
Haha! No, I think the problem tonight was Bishop and his goalposts. Gonna lose a few to a hot goalie every now and then, at least they got a point.
The trolls are just frustrated by the Habs winning streak … A lot of pent up anger. I usually don’t respond, but sometimes it’s too hard.

some friend…sorry misread the post…lack of oxygen is already evident in some posts so far
Team defense looked great again. Limited scoring chances/shots against the Sens. Offense was excellent too–lots of pressure in every period against sens. Just happened to be Bishop’s night. Not Price’s fault–goalie does his job allowing just 1 goal through three plus periods. Subban looked uncharacteristically awful tonight. Diaz, Prust, cube, DD and many others were excellent and Markov looked much better. Play like they did tonight and they should smoke Toronto in their barn.
Wasn’t a bad game Bishop is just a tree, I hope we can take on Toronto without another stupid melee and hopefully White will be in the lineup
http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/
Sens were missing Norris Dman, top ten in LEAGUE FORWARD and the Leagues top 4 goalie….t’was a bad loss!
Price and Halak are not the only goalies in the league that can win a game when their team is badly outplayed.
and the sens were badly outplayed like a team who was missing their best dman and forward. bishop played a great game, the blues are probably kicking themselves in the ass for trading him for a draft pick.
Yah, I agree. Not the same PK everyone loved to hate. He just doesn’t seem into it from the centre line in …where’s the offensive upside we all think he should possess?

Sometimes the other teams goalie will steal one and tonight was robbery.

http://nickolaisblog.wordpress.com/
That’s a relief! Must be because we played well and got unlucky.
If you’re gonna lose, at least get a point, right?
I cannot believe how lucky Bishop was he should have kissed those posts man o man at least 3 times he was totally beat and it went right behind him
Damphousse had a great observation. With regards to our road trip coming up. When a team has an all star player or only one line producing its easy for the home team to put their shutdown players on (home ice has the last line change). But with the habs there are 3 lines that are well balanced and producing so its gonna be a bit harder for home teams to have the advantage in that department.
The final score is the only statistic that matters.
We had our chances but we let them slip away.
It just wasn’t meant to be.
We didn’t get the job done.
We can still hold our heads high.
The puck just didn’t bounce our way.
We didn’t get the big breaks today.

The boys played well enough to win tonight, so real bummer! Must suck for Pricey to allow a goal like that and it became the difference in the game. Too bad the offense had no luck tonight.
What bothers me is this was such a winnable game to start our tough sequence of 7 out 8 games on the road.
Now win one in regulation in TO and all is perfect with the world again!
A bit of a bummer, but not the end of the world…

Ha! Good one…
Sucks to lose the game after dominating the way we did. There was a time we used to get outshot like that all the time,i really don’t miss those days. Games like tonight you could play 10 times and win 8,tonight was one of the other 2.
I think that would be advantageous in a play-off series where there is no shoot-out.
If the Habs played the Sens like this in a playoff series, out shooting them constantly 45-24, do you think the Habs would lose the series? Tonight was an anomaly, get over it.
well said D
remember Halak vs Washington and Pitt.
People forget that Halak was pulled many games. Plus the other goalies were brutal. Much worse than Price tonight.
Just saying that goalies steal series all the time. Pat Roy, Ken Dryden.
True but, for me, it was not just the goalie who beat the Habs, the goal posts did as well. What is surprising is nobody is saying what a good game it was. Very entertaining.
Yep, it was a good game and Habs should have won by a few goals.
I beg to differ. It is also true that a goalie can completely rob a series, point in case the last Habs run to the ECF’s with Halak in nets.
For the Habs to win such a series against the Sens they would have to figure out how to solve Bishop more often than they did tonight or Price would have to be impeccable, and preferably they would be able to accomplish both.
Over confidence is only a few degrees short of hubris.
He speaks the truth!
What if Pacioretty, Cole, Subban and Eller didn’t score in the shootout? It’s always the guy the coach didn’t choose that would obviously score in hindsight.
Subban? After the game he played he’s have shot it over the glass.
Mr. Biter
No Guts No Glory
Yeah, what was with Subban tonight? Arguably the worst game I’ve seen him play, constantly turning the puck over.
Maybe he was just looking forward to Wednesday’s game, where a lot of his family and friends will be in attendance.
Couldn’t execute at all tonight, even when he had the right intentions. Speak to unusual lack of focus and concentration, which could be related to what you’re pointing out.
Don’t want to pile on on him too much as this is rare for him and he didn’t cost the team any goal. But if he’s that distracted ahead of a game in TO, how is going to play during the game?
But Gionta? The guy is not a goal scorer.

Lantichambre guys saying Pk needs to keep it simple. stop HOt dogging it. They hope the work of the other dmen rub off on PK. “He’d be such a good player if he fell in line and played within the system”
Hasn’t he done that this year? He’s been much better defensively and more responsible with the puck, I think MT has tried to rein him in a bit too much if anything. Those has beens and wannabees (with the exception of Roy tonight) are full of hot air as usual and their hate for PK is getting old.
He’s been really good so far. Tonight was the only night i’ve seen him stick out in a bad way. But I hope he keeps playing the way he has this year (Before tonight that is). I think the reigning in could be a good thing though.
Same here it will help his defensive game.
Give me a break. PK was not great but he was not brutal either. Gorges looks like he’s barely hanging in there when other teams are cycling.
Scoring 2 goals or less, you are not going to take the W..Blame Price all you want, but the guys up front need more polish around the opposing net…Bishop played a heck of a game, but he was beatable and we should have won in a 3-4 goal margin..
No pressure/scrambles down low and the OTT D cleared the front of the net with ease…Bishop coughed up a few juicy rebounds that we didn’t bury..This team need a real sniper..Say what you want, but Iginla would look great in this line up..
If you are going to lose, at least earn a point..We are not chasing anyone and the more points we earn the harder it will be to catch us…

Shots on goal doesn’t suggest that as well as the territorial advantage the habs had.
Sure, the sens hit some posts, but the Habs hit a ton of posts that could have rebounded in instead of out, just tough luck. The sens shots seemed to hit the outside so they were more of a close miss.

I’d be real happy.
I have to say that was oe of the best games the Habs have played in the last four or five years. I know we didn’t score much, but the pressure was on Ottawa all night. You can count the wins on one hand where a team who got bombarded like Ottawa tonight and still win.

I’d be down with that.
Robbery. Nice goaltending by Bishop. Wow does Ottawa have goaltending! And the Sens should get Spezza before the end of the season…
Ron Fournier is going off at the coaches for selecting Gio for the shutout before Eller and about half the team. Highly entertaining rant!
I liked the choice of DD, Galchenyuk, and Gallagher for the shootouts. Why not Eller instead of Gionta???
And though he had an off night, PK is VERY good on shootouts. Atleast he was at the junior level and with Hamilton. I dont think i’ve seen him take a shootout in the NHL yet
Gionta lifetime in shootouts: 37%, 20/54
Eller lifetime in shootouts: 20%, 1/5

…Patrick very impressed with Gallagher’s effectiveness in front of the net
Do you people slamming Price realize great goalies like Dryden, Fuhr, Roy, Brodeur, and Luongo all let in soft goals once in a while. Heck every game Roy played I waited for the long blue line shot along the ice to go in because he wouldn’t get his stick down.
Bishop was good to go, the Sens were horrible tonight. The S.O. should be our goal scorers. Max Pacs, Ellar and Galchenyuk. Yes I know he missed tonight but you need natural goal scorers out there not players who are having a off defensive season…..Gionta! Really? and Plecs is a play maker, not a shoot out artist. Other than that great game, got a point.
This team needs one more 25-35 goal scorer and they will have to move Cole and Gionta to do it. Cole should have been moved over the summer but hey I don’t run the team.

Price played a loose game in some periods tonight. Didn’t expect him to stop all shots in SO, but one of his moves looked very lazy and goaltending coach may not like it.
The RDS crew during the shoot-out live play-by-play said that Regin pulled Price out of his underwear.
He was a little off but still only gave up one goal. People should watch the Flyers-Leafs highlights to see a goalie who really sucks.
Remember the days when Price had to make 44 save games?

Anyway a loss is a loss and in the end it is a team game. If the goalie lets in a questionable goalitt is up to his teamates to pick him up. Some nights the role will be reversed and the goaie will be the one to steal a win.
This will even out over the course of the season. The Habs have been on this end of the stick a few times already, so we are due to get a bounce here and there.
It’s hard to blame a team for losing because they played so well. It is just more fustrating. Let’s just regroup and come out and play the same way on Wednesday. We owe these guys a couple of losses.

Way Bishop is playing now – tonights game & being third star of the week – The Sens might get a 2nd round pick for him like they gave up to get him from St Louis if they trade him…..
The Sens got a steal getting Bishop for a 2nd from the Blues.
Former blue and now blue cover man bernie federko was pissed when they traded him to ottawa. Said he was the best goalie in blues camp 2 years in a row but was sent down both times because of his 2 way contract.
A 6’7″ goalie is pretty hard to beat when you can’t see net. Even Desharnais went through him. Should have come in from the side and got him to move more.
Looks as though MT needs to abandon the stats and watch who is scoring here and now!
While the sound of a puck hitting a post may be particularly satisfying, it remains the case that one must put the puck inside of the net to score a goal.
lol…Stop using logic.
I see all the know-it-all cry babies are out. Good times.
Price still will be the Olympic goalie but hopefully the key games dont go into overtime as since the junior worlds Price does not provide any advantage in shootouts…Plus at the Olympics there may be games where Canada dominates and gives up minimal chances and Price has to make sure when he gets minimal shots he does not give up bad goals…
WTF was up with PK in this game? He had no clue, all night. I’m getting worried that he’s losing his game.
Haha, after one game? Is this the first game you have watched all year? The RDS guys, most of whom aren’t fond of him, were talking about all the magic he had going at the blue line against the Rangers. You know when that was? Two nights ago. Do you watch any other sports? It happens in every sport and to the best of them.
…Patrick giving mucho love to all Our D on RDS
I agree with Bill. Who blames the goalie? It’s not like he let in five goals.
I guess I’d like to see a game where the other team gets 50 shots on Price, and he stands on his head to win the game.
Lots of times we say we ran into a “hot goalie”, like tonight, who “stole” the game. I don’t think other teams say that very often about us.
You have a short memory. Wasn’t that long ago that was the only way we won games. Now, thank God, we actually play a team defence and limit the shots on net. Rather have it that way anyday.
Tomorrows headline should read: Posts the difference in game dominated by Canadiens. Anything else is just misinformation.

That one goal should not have went in.
Come on!
If that was anyone else who caused the goal to go in, HIO would be blaming THEM for the loss. This is a team sport, and I spread the blame when they lose. Tonight, Price is getting it, he lost the game…
If a goalie gives up one goal in a game he normally wins. What about the forwards who did not score? They had bad luck with all those posts. It happens…
I wish I had a 96% average in school…
It wasn’t just the bad goal. He was fighting the puck all night. Was also off balance on the SO winner. He wasn’t horrible, but he wasn’t Carey Price tonight. He has set the bar high and he normally plays spectacular, tonight he was just a good goalie.
It happens, no big deal.

Price was terrible in the shootout. I detest how Price lovers refuse to admit when he does not play well – he chokes in shootouts even Price fessed up to this at the start of the season. How you can’t is just plain stupid!
^ Shh.
Even though that loss sucked, I don’t feel that bad, the Habs sent a message tonight that they are a class above Ottawa despite the result. Bishop was awesome and he might be the third worst goalie in that organization.
Lots of positives to build from in that game.
I might not be familiar with the rules in a shootout, but why does Price always look so passive and skates back in his crease as the shooter approaches him? Can’t he make an effort to pokecheck the shooter before he fires? Or is this against the rules?
NHLers get paid enough- I wish they played overtime until someone won. Shoutouts are what we did in 8 and under.
Why is Jacques Martin allowed to pick our shoot out players?
I would prefer some three on three. Let’s see skill vs skill.
Habs out shot them 45-24. Can’t complain. Sorry. Price looked slightly off but Habs still got the point. Last year, Habs would have gotten zero points.
Systems win cups. smart teams will tank it when mediocrity seems eminent because bad players in a good sysytem will make the playoffs, good players in a good system will make the semis or finals maybe win the odd cup, great/talented players in a good system will win a lot, A LOT! need a couple guys that can bury ‘em when the oppportunity presents itself.
Keyword: systems…see New Jersey, Boston, Nashville, Toronto, Ottawa etc. Teams playing with systems seem to be “surviving” this season so far…
I thought Gio had a great game
so-so at best I say. No where near what he’s capable of.
Made some nice plays setting up pleks. Good intensity too. Besides the bad Shootout I didnt see any negatives
If Price wants to be the number one goalie in Sochi he had better play a lot better than tonight and be a lot more consistent
Shootout is a f&$king joke. Can’t wait till they remove them from the sport. Also, Habs suck at them. Jesus
lay off Gionta, Chucky sucked pretty bad in the shootout and I see no one here saying that he’s finished or talking about trading him…….
Funny thing is, Gio had Bishop dead-to-rights on the backhand, it was a bad hop. It happens. Agree with you.
Chucky has the same move head fake & go fore hand – Can’t do it against a big goalie like Bishop…..
