It was fun while it lasted.
The Senators blew the game open in the second period while Ryan White was serving a double-minor for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct.
PP goals by Habs-killer Daniel F. Alfredsson and Mika Zibanejad made it 3-1.
Then Chris Phillips capped off a period of total dominance by the Chris Neil line to give the Senators a three-goal lead.
Three goals on Peter Budaj in 3:35, and the Canadiens never recovered … although there some quality shots on Craig Anderson.
Chris Neil iced the cake with a wraparound late in the third period.
The game included two first-period fights and a parade to the penalty box that sabotaged any rhythm or flow to the action.

Blow it up!!! Start at the top. Move the team. Ha Ha!
Maybe they can get Patches some of that spray that Ray Lewis used to come back sooner than anyone expected?
Too soon?
White has taken too many stupid penalties and a poor fighter to boot. Imagine smiling while sitting in the box with blood flowing freom his recently punched nose. Clearly he needs time away from the game. Imagine Prust losing his fight to Chris Neil….so what happens when we face Lucic and Chara? Why try and be tough when you’re not it just translates into dumb penalties. Nothing against standing up for your team just against stupid unnecessary penalties. Next few games will give us good indication of what we have for a team.
Times like these the Habs need another enforcer like Staubitz.
They came back after the first loss, they’ll come back after this one. They are still rebuilding. No biggie. But boy did the officiating suck.
Agreed. A disappointing loss after being spoiled by 4 straight victories. I thought things would start out much worse.
The officiating is a part of it. But as we saw tonight, the Habs REALLY need to get tough on this team next time they meet. Sens treated our Habs like punching bags. Pathetic!
I don’t think any amount of toughness would have helped. They needed offensive pressure, but instead gave it away because of penalties (yeah, the reffing was horrible, but still).
This was clearly PK Subban’s fault. He was getting way too much attention in the Press Box tonight; the other guys didn’t like it…
He was actually talking with other coaching staff during this game. We can’t blame him cuz’ he’s not in the lineup for the last 5 games.
I was joking.
Anybody else miss Gill on the PK???

DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!
If they didn’t chase the puck so much on the PK the results would probably improve. But I’m no expert.
It worked the last few games though.
Huh?
It does look disorganized. It’s curious to see who MT is using on the PK. And the wide variety of players, too.
Subban will help this area.
Yes Subban is the cure all with him we will win the rest of our games … he never makes mistakes, never turns over the puck and …
There you go again. Will Subban help or not? A simple question.
Yes
Our team got manhandled and out-muscled by a Senators lineup that, evidently speaking, have big bodies who can play.
Message to Therrien and his staff: Back to the drawing board!
The defense tonight looks terrible.
Hopefully Subban will add some toughness next game.
Also, they need to get away from the penalty box next time they meet. Poor Prust and White, they got beaten up pretty badly!
Would’ve been great if the Habs had 5-game winning streak.
Don’t wanna blame the loss on Budaj but he looked terrible
Maybe not a stellar performance but even Price would have a hard time winning when we only could score one lousy goal

Oof.
Sorry gang, my fault, my fault.
Wasn’t able to watch the game.
How was the refereeing?
Was there at the Bell yesterday, and the refs were pathetic. Kept blowing every little thing, didn’t let the teams play, and completely ruined the flow of the game.
Not to mention their asinine call on Prust…
Did it happen like that tonight?
—Hope Springs Eternal—
Yup
Same ref too

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Yeah, when I heard that at the beginning of the game, I though “Oh crap, we’ll be lucky to get away with a point tonight.”

Steve Kozari remember that name.

Kind of makes you feel nostalgic for Chris Lee.
Montreal now leads the NHL in PIM.
Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.
The loss is on White. Poor decision-making by him.
BUT at least the Habs were brought back down to Earth. The PK needs some work. The “1st line” needs to get going or get dismantled (at least until Pacs returns).
Edit: Oh, and maybe Therrien will consider putting Subban back in instead of playing politics and mind games. Enforce the team message, but without holding his roster spot hostage.
I didn’t see the game, but it seems pretty harsh to blame a team loss on one person.
*edit* What are you talking about? PK has to be briefed on the system and practice with the team. He couldn’t have played tonight.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
For sure, the whole team played poorly. It’s just that White’s double minor tipped the scales in a disjointed game – the final straw – and it wasn’t justified.
As for Subban, I’m referring to reports that Therrien wants to insert Subban in next week (i.e. not this weekend).
I expect that will change, Jedi. We definitely look like a team that could use a young physical D-man tonight.
Therrien thought he had the luxury of time, so was being coy or picky in his press scrum today, suggesting a decision could wait until next week. I’d be shocked if PK doesn’t play this week-end.
Let’s face it, I know there is a system and all that. But newly traded players often join their new team right away and get inserted in the line-up. If you’re a pro with good skills, you learn on the go. I don’t care what system you’re playing, PK better than Kaberle anyday.
Yeah. The Leafs inserted Gardiner in after he missed a month or so with a concussion though he did play with the Marlies before.
I don’t know, I just think that the Habs getting their best Dman from last season should lead to immediate and substantial improvement in even strength play.
Why lay blame when the loss was clearly Lars Eller’s fault?
I blame PK

Sens fans are such morons…singing Ole..classless sore losers, and classless sore winners….after what happened tonight I am sure they are going to tiptoe around me tomorrow..this better not happen again this weekend..or you guys may need to take up a collection for bail money..
see my post about a dozen below… kick ass Mary and take no prisoners!!!
We can send you all our pennies.
The mint is stopping production of them anyhow so you can’t rely on them to bail you out.
Iagree i live in ottawa how do u think i feel ill put in the first 20
…well, that was horrible
…Anderson kept Us from coming back in the third
…and, give Budaj a break …4 of the goals against are ALL on Our Team as a group
White is not very bright. Too many penalties.
Richard R
Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.
Even by the standards of the average Canadian hockey player from the prairies, Ryan White is kinda dumb.

These posts irk me. Have you met Ryan, Paul? You sat down for a coffee with him?
Chris Nilan was one of the best of his kind, and he wouldn’t win any science fairs either.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
Well that was a harsh reality check.
The Sens are completely dialed in and they’ve got a hot goalie. They’ll be a handful for any team.
We had our chances, but didn’t deserve it. Back to the drawing board. I’m curious to see what the coaches do to adjust. Without Patches and a first line to speak of, we’re massively exposed.
Dems da breaks I guess.
Rough night, hopefully lessons learned. While the start was great, still a year for building, nights like this will hopefully help. Hopefully not too many more like it.
It should be a wake up call. You’re not going to win them all.
Habs were absolutely putrid tonight.
Felt like I was watching a Buffalo Bills game.
Et c’est le Budaj!

So – No Price, No Maxpac, No Subban, No luck & No discipline.
I hate losing but 4W -2L is more than I was expecting.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=414851
And of course all this is a normal thing to see … like it or not there is more to the whole Subban story than a lot of people want to admit, I for one hope the kid can make it with the Habs, but do not pretend that there is nothing to it.
You know what, Don? I read it. I read the whole thing. And this is the only part that you could possibly read anything into.
Therrien: “He’s a big part of our hockey team, but like everyone I believe you need to come on a team with a good frame of mind and good attitude, we want to make sure our team concept stays the same.”
I think we can read a little more into this also imho:
It appears Subban has been given a clear message and if he plans on playing an integral role with the team he’d better accept the new set of rules.
“The first thing Marc Bergevin and I did was sit down with (Subban) and explain our philosophy and he understood where we’re coming from,” Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. “It was a good, honest conversation with P.K. and we just want to make sure everyone is on the same page.”
Sounds like a typical player/coach meeting to me. You wouldn’t think they’d do the same thing if a new player came in via a trade?

For a guy coming off his entry level contract I am trying to remember any other player that handled his next deal in the way this one went down, where there is smoke there is fire, and there is a lot of smoke around PK … but let us hope for the best. He is for sure a young man with a whole lot of raw talent. I like PK but my spider senses are tingling !
Or… this whole thing has been under such a microscope, that even if PK farts during practice, it will make headlines.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!
Well, based on your repeated posts on this topic, I’m going to read into your situation. You don’t actually like Subban.
Which is fine – do your thing.
But you know this team is better with him in the lineup – regardless of his attitude, frame of mind, philosophy, or whatever other buzzphrase MB or MT used.
You are wrong I like some of the things I see from PK he has huge raw talent.
You have been reading a lot into everything. I can see it’s too hard for you to stop, so delicious!
I was not aware there was a limit to how much we are allowed to read about our team, of course we could just all agree on everything all the time and drink cool aid
Let’s not doom and gloom the place up. We’re still 4-2-0.
Next game should be interesting
This team is still too small to go very far.
Think it’s best to forget that ever happened.
Trade Bourque before it is too late.
Bourque was one of the best players last night.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
est la but budij sorry guys if i spelled it wrong soooo mad scaberly needs to go. The kids and Prust looks like there playing there buts off.Chris Niel what a douch his sucker punch on Prust hope leaving budij in dont kill the momentum. Is it me or does Cole want to play. Like one of the other guys said they showed up our holes now time to plug them
Betcha White has to sit next to the pee hole in the back of the bus. (Goon reference there)

Can’t win them all. Seriously its early , weekend coming up so will get them back at our place. Needing max and surely pk for some spark. Refs are dorks just hopeless.
Well, Budaj hasn’t played in a while and he was facing a goaltender who is clearly on a roll.
I still remember that Colorado playoff series where Anderson was facing like 50 shots per game from the Sharks and not letting anything get by him.
Peter Budaj for the Ottawa Senators First Star!
POOR Mavid!!!!
Agree, feel bad for her.
PK says he missed everything, including teammates.
Selfish hot dog.
Not to mention a paycheque.
And you sir are a……well, you can fill in the blanks. Your hatred of the guy seems to have coloured your view. He would have been a selfish hotdog had he said, “I didn’t miss my teammates”. Personally, I think he is great. Brash yes…but so what. Half of the fans in Montreal loved Kovy and he was a selfish, lazy, egomaniac.
Man, we really need a sarcasm font.
Not their best game.
I’m looking to see how they rebound.
That should gauge their character.
I do not think that I will comment to-nite..nuff said
The Sens win, and there’s barely any fans there to care, cause the place was mostly full of Habs fans.
The stuff inside that baby’s diaper has the game sized up pretty well

2-1-1 in the next 4 and they are 6-3-1.
This season Price should start at least 40 games. Put Budaj in only against the worst teams. The Habs need a solid back-up goal-tender regardless. Unless of course Price can play 70 games a season like Marty F.
Luongo,anybody?
He is a backup in Vancouver.
Poor Budaj. Welcome to Price’s world.
Gut check time for Les Boys for the weekend back to back.

What a snoozefest I actually fell asleep on the desk
Nathan Mackinnon!
Seth Jones!
As well as we have been doing, we have now lost two games and look completely listless against division rivals.
Another thing to recognize is we haven’t played as well in the last couple of games though we won last night. Penalty kill very suspect…
Three consecutive games blowing a lead. But this is the first loss.
At least they had a lead.
How about Therrien decipher’s last years penalty kill scheme and combines it with his ES and PP system. That sounds like a good combination.
Jesus. Budaj misses three quarters of a full calendar year worth of game action and he’s being thrown under the bus during a game in which his team scored ONCE.
Did you expect a shutout?
Not at all, but the last goal was stinky.
Not by you. And he hasn’t been good tonight. But my god, expectations should have been tempered.
Are you watching the game? Did you see that last goal?
–
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
He didn’t play well. But blaming the goaltender in a 5-1 loss is beyond ridiculous.
No one as far as I can tell is blaming Budaj for the loss specifically.
After one year and one game, however, we can say that he is not up to the job.
–
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
You can say it.
4W, 2L
Will you take it?
Yup, easy. How many 2nds of back-to-backs have the Habs won in the last ten years? I would wager <10.
They competed hard in the 1st half of the 3rd which I consider a positive. Previously they would have mailed it in from the mid-point on
"man, I love winnin'; you know, it's like better than losin'?"-

This game reminded me a lot of last year……..which is not a good thing lol. Huge weekend coming up now, they need those 2 badly, don’t want a losing streak after such a good start.

PK please sign.
Love that everyone is yelling “Leafs suck”. At least we have that.
Reminder we are still too soft.
Another save! OK from 60 feet, but still.
Even the puck doesn’t go Canadiens way, sigh!
Mercifully, it’s almost over

he’s still a punk for throwing a hit at the buzzer in a 5-1 win
Na Na Na Les Canadiens Les Canadiens
Well, the depressives and begrudgers need to take over HIO for a while. We’ll have a room of doom, DD bashing, Eller bashing, blaming of RDS, White in the stocks, second guessing – all the fun stuff after a loss. Then we’ll get another game with fresh legs and hopefully adjustments, and we’ll see where it goes from there.
Why are they saying Neil scored? Wasn’t it Budaj?
Reality check time.
Peter Budaj cannot tend goal in the NHL.
Brandon Prust – if you are going to get beaten up by Chris Neil you should seriously think about not fighting.
Everyone was right: signing Leaf failure Colby Armstrong was silly.
Ryan White – goodbye to him. Please.
Travis Moen – is there a point to Travis Moen?
Scott Gomez might well win another cup this year.
–
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
Budaj’s first game in nine months.
White would be better served by being benched(actually justified here) instead of getting rid of him.
There’s only a point to Travis Moen if his name is at the end of a sentence.
Great early starts usually mean mediocre finishes. I’m not sold on San Jose but they have a great collection of talent.
the problem tonight will be the reason we loose everytime Price rest…Peter Budaj
Budaj was handcuffed on at least three of the goals tonight.
Prust is not here to just fight.
Armstrong is not here to score 30 goals.
White made a big mistake after mind-bendingly stupid call.
Moen is hardly the reason we lost tonight.
Two deflections/bounces become two quick goals, some weird and demoralizing calls from the refs, and tired legs. This is why we lost tonight; it’s demoralizing, but it’s silly to start trying to blame individuals for a group loss in poor circumstances.
Blow this team up. Lets start a rebuild. First off fire therien and then we trade price + a first rounder for loungo. Get Gomez back!
…this is the kind of game HIO comes in handy
…I usually don’t read The Blog during a game …but, on a night like tonight it certanly spreads the pain …and, I don’t feel so alone in My misery
“Misery Loves Company”

Honestly, does Price ever have games like Anderson is having tonight? Where he stands on his head and stops everything, robbing 3-4 sure goals?
That was Halak.
Trade Price for…ahh nevermind. Been there, done that.
He said 3 or 4 goals,not 3 or 4 shots.
Trade Price for Anderson. Do it MB!
He’s our #1, lets hope he does/will
