Liveblog: Sabres beat Canadiens 3-2 in OT

Give the Canadiens credit.
Exhausted from a long road trip and cross-continent travel, playing for pride, your Montreal Canadiens got a goal from David Desharnais with 3.5 second left to send a game Buffalo needed into overtime.
Tyler Myers won it for the Sabres when a whole lot of white jerseys were caught up ice.

Peter Budaj was beaten on the 36th shot he faced.

  1. gumper says:

The loss is welcome. We must have a top five pick this year. Hilarious to watch the Sabre celebration. Remember how many years we’ve been in that position, desperately struggling to get that eighth spot so we could go six or seven then bow in the first round. Top pick is way more important.

    • Cal says:

Let’s just hope a top pick doesn’t turn into Daigle or any of the many “next” ones that turned into “never weres”.

      • Dr.Rex says:

Probably end up with Forsberg who is a work in progress for the future. DOnt expect any impact from him for awhile.

      • gumper says:

Yeah, let’s hope we don’t get a top draft pick because we’ll probably blow it.

        • Cal says:

Just stating that a draft pick isn’t a sure thing. Every team passed on Subban in the first round and he’s turned into one of the best Dmen in the league. Top picks don’t really mean shit. It’s how the player develops after being picked when they’re no longer playing against boys.

          • gumper says:

So, because the Habs can’t develop draft picks, they shouldn’t hope to pick in the top 5? Not really sure what you’re arguing for here. Of course, no draft pick is a sure thing, but drafting in the top 5 statistically improves your odds significantly.

          • Cal says:

@gumper. Read my post over again. Where does it say that the Habs can’t develop players? Reading between the lines or what?

          • gumper says:

Well, I believe I’m reading your posts carefully, Cal, but for the life of me I can’t figure out whether you’re suggesting I stop hoping for a top 5 draft pick because it might turn into an Alexandre Daigle, or just give up hoping altogether. Since we were talking about a possible Habs top 5 pick, when you mentioned the problem of player development, I don’t think it was unreasonable to infer that you were referring to Habs player development. But setting aside my faulty inferencing, I still feel the possibility of blowing a draft pick is not a reason to not hope for a high one.

      • Trisomy 21 says:

How dare you, I’ve been looking forward to this pick since December/January. Now I’m going to have this in the back of my mind

  2. novahab says:

Pathic just pathic effort in this game. Can’t wait till this season is over and CC is gone to start with. Pleks better be gone to GD want a lousey effort he put in tonight. What in the hell was Weber doing out in overtime. No Montreal did not deserve to be in this game. With that said that two bit crook in strips call that hook on Patch should be fired. I am sick of these evening up call that favor the Americains teams. The day Bettman dies I’ll be first at his funeral and I will piss on his grave in front of all his family the lousey crook.

  3. Dr.Rex says:

I guarantee that if the Blues had Kaberle and GOmer on thier team then they would be out of the playoffs. You cant have any free riders and surely Hitch would have destroyed those two by now.

WE have some good pieces but in this league a fw bonehead plays will cost you every game.

  4. RiverviewCanadien says:

Man it is hard watching Bourque play on this team. I thought he was supposed to get to the dirty areas and have a physical presence on the ice?

Why Leblanc (who is 10x more physical) sits when RenΓ© Float-Away plays is beyond me…

  5. Dr.Rex says:

The Markov hating fools cant blame that one on AM79.

Eller and Bourque is a horrible combination to have together playing 4 on 4. Eller takes many risks and Bourque is a lazy slug at times. Especially with tiny weber on the ice with them.

  6. HabsFansince49 says:

They played hard, but we don’t have the talent Simple. Gainey and Gauthier destroyed this team (e.g. Bourque, Kaberle). Why the good people of Montreal don’t tar and feather Gainey and Gauthier is a mystery. Can’t blame players. Can’t even blame Cunneyworth. Is Geoff Molson brain dead? Probably or counting beers sold at the Bell and laughing his way to the bank.

Kaberle screwed up again on the four on four. Twit.

  9. Mondou6 says:

That’s what we get for not taking Myers out of the game after his cheap shot on Gomez.

    • Bill says:

Oh. I thought it was Ennis who hit Gomez.

No, but if our smurf is going to get run, I have no problem running their smurf.

        • powdered toastmann says:

How many times do we hear from the “we don’t need any grit/toughness crowd” when a Hab get’s drilled with a nasty, border line/illegal hit. They’re the first ones to shriek and shrill about the piss poor officiating and what should happen to the offender. One solution to the problem (is to react as per the post outlined above or to seek out the offender later) is the only response that can be guaranteed as opposed to whining and crying about all the alleged non-calls. (trust me, no one is listening and no one cares)

Like it or not, this is the response (i.e. can’t count on the refs so let’s send a message ourselves) you are going to see 90% of the time from the Bruins.

    • boing007 says:

Myers should have got a five minute major and a game misconduct. Plus a fine and a two game suspension.
Only way to get rid of that nastiness.

      Richard R

  10. rogieshan says:

Dumb play by Bourque to play the puck back to the point.

  11. McKanadiens says:

Some solid pieces in this squad. Looking forward to the future!

I can’t golf worth a damn, but I love hitting up the driving range to unleash stress.

  13. Mark C says:

Man, this team has zero karma these past few years. That goon shouldn’t have even been playing.

  14. punkster says:

Hell, it was fun and they worked for it and that’s all I want them to do. Just show some life.

    ***Subbang Baby!!!***

    • Cal says:

That Weber shot had Miller beat, but a little puck luck for Miller turns into a goal for Myers.
Nice to see a hard working effort after a trip out west and back.
Budaj battled to the end and did a really good job.
And, yes, they got a loser point.

  15. Habbu says:

Weak effort by Eller along the boards.

  16. Well.. they didn’t give up.

  17. mb says:

    Oh well. Fun finish anyway.

  18. Mondou6 says:

Of course, Myers. Couldn’t be anyone else.

  19. Propwash says:

    Aah well, that was fun.

    Don’t let the wultures getcha.

  20. joedacrabb33 says:

Why is Kaberle on the ice in overtime?

  21. MontrealAtheist says:

Well, now that we have come this far we might as well lose a few more and go for one of the two top picks … Who knows, with some luck we might make our last place finish count and get the next Stamkos or Seguin.

  22. nick says:

It’s awesome to see them play well… but common!
Last week their in position to pick up a top 3 pick, Markov… the bain of MTL’s season appears just in time to propel them to what… 10th in the East… *sigh*
    This guy… he’s killing me!

    Desharnais rocks.

  30. smiler2729 says:

Booner, who ya kidding with “what a team!”

Too little too late when it doesn’t matter, we’re in Leaf time

Jack Edwards is a clam, Bruins are pukes.

  31. Mondou6 says:

    My reaction:

    Oh wait, ugh, crap.

  32. ffenliv says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if that line lit up the league next year. Based on this year’s results, and an improved powerplay (please, please!), it’s nto hard to see Max hitting 40, and Cole not far behind, with DD racking up the points all over the place.

I’d give it 50/50 that the line gets better, or they fall back.

It has been a long time since I felt I could say that about a trio of players.

    • twilighthours says:

      Strong commitment.

      • ffenliv says:

Of course, this is in a situation where my committment, or lack thereof, makes no difference to how reality works out.

I want them to be great, but just because Cole was good this year, doesn’t mean he will be next, and Max hasn’t got enough real history behind him to say for sure.

I take it as given, really, that the powerplay improves, but the league has a way of adapting to new and unexpected threats, like DD, and maybe he slides back. Or maybe Cole’s advancing years take a bit of the edge off.

        Who knows.

All I was saying is that I feel the possibilities leading to getting back roughly balance out with the factors that could lead to the whole line going backwards.

  45. slapshot777 says:

The league should not be looking at rule changes but the officiating. The officials must be made more accountable for their actions and game management.

The other day Cole gets fined $2500 for a slew foot in the Edmonton game. Okay that’s fine. What should Myers fine or suspension be for that hit on Gomez.

How is that only two minutes? I counted at least five missed offsides tonight. Penalties have been too many to count by the officials.

If the referees can’t do their job consistently enough then the league should be putting in rewards and demerits, if a official does good work he gets rewarded with bonus money, if officials do bad jobs then they lose their chance to earn extra money by missing out on playoff games. Do this and I bet you would see more officials concentrate on doing their job.

    • Mondou6 says:

I agree 100%. WTF? Why do we even have him if we’re not going to relatiate for the Gomez hit? I’m baffled.

      • Bill says:

That Gomez hit NEVER HAPPENED. You imagined it. It couldn’t have happened, because other teams don’t “take liberties” with out players now, because we have Staubitz. Read the comments!

        • powdered toastmann says:

History has shown that recent Hab coaches (especially JM and RC) are not near as hawkish as some other coaches when it comes to playing a tough 4 th liner @ a time when a message probably needs to be sent. That is of course on the rare occasion when such a player was actually playing for the Habs. (especially late in a one goal game, regardless of their position in the standings)

  58. shootdapuck says:

What is a hit from behind in this league?

The officiating is getting worse and should be an issue at BOG meetings!

    • Mondou6 says:

I’m pissed we aren’t retaliating. We’re out of the playoffs, have absolutely nothing to lose, and we actually have a hired goon now.

At the very least, teams should be afraid of flagrantly boarding our players.

I care more about protecting our players now than I do wins/losses. W/L are meaningless to us, we’re out of it.

  59. L Elle says:

This game isn’t ugly Boone, it’s hideous. lol

  61. gumper says:

Don’t want to seem like a whiner, because really, who cares, but this game has not been well officiated. Several missed offsides, and a handful of missed calls. Ah well, it’s just Habs and Sabres on a Monday night.

  62. Mondou6 says:

Ok, I’m ready to see Staubitz blindside Ennis in retaliation now.

I mean, Staubitz perform a “hockey play” on Ennis.

  63. twilighthours says:

Amazing that the Myers infraction and the pax infraction are worth the same thing.

  64. Bertuzzi says:
