Liveblog: Sabres beat Canadiens 3-2 in OT

Markov

Give the Canadiens credit.
Exhausted from a long road trip and cross-continent travel, playing for pride, your Montreal Canadiens got a goal from David Desharnais with 3.5 second left to send a game Buffalo needed into overtime.
Tyler Myers won it for the Sabres when a whole lot of white jerseys were caught up ice.

Peter Budaj was beaten on the 36th shot he faced.

    So are we few the remaining hard core fans?

    It’s like HIO is having its own version of the Royal Rumble. People are dropping like flies. JD_, Berskshire, SF09…

    Only the most hardened and habitual will remain to the bitter end.

    Speaking of which. What ever happened to Displaced? Did he morph into JohnBellyful?

    Watching paint dry is more interesting than this rabble.
    Even the timekeeper has dozed off.

  6. gumper says:

    Bourque is the perfect replacement for Cammi. Covers the ice in spectacular fashion while remaining completely uninvolved in the play. Nice pickup PG.

  7. RockinRey says:

    DD – a nice little hockey player. I completely discounted him…. He has been a complete bonus for Habs.

    How many wingers have had any success playing with Gomez this year?

    Few to none! It’s like wandering the desert looking for a drink!

    Nothing has changed the teams big up front lean on the D and the inevitable happens!

  12. Not impressed by Bourque at all.

    I hope that this is a slump similar to James Neal’s when he was just acquired by Penguins. I don’t expect Rene to score 40, but 20-25 should be achievable.

    What did everyone think that Markov was going to come back play 25 minutes a game and rack up points and set the powerplay back on track.

    Like the other poster said, this is The preseason for Markov.

  15. HardHabits says:

    Emelin hits like a Tank. Scores like a Tank.

  18. Exit716 says:

    For everyone ragging on Markov, this is his training camp. Don’t expect miracles.

    • RockinRey says:

      If its his training camp then he should have been sent down to the A to get up to speed. He should only be faulted for the second period goal. Whoever messed up missed the coverage on the backcheck on the last goal .

      He gets kudos for any good plays. All he had to do on the one play was step in front of the player and he goes nowhere.

      Dont be all hypersensitive

  19. nellis13 says:

    Markov’s fragile

  20. shootdapuck says:

    Does this count in the blown leads stats?

  21. Bertuzzi says:

    I’m going to miss Gomez.

  22. habsfaninboston says:

    Emelin’s goal.

  23. twilighthours says:

    Markov pulling a kaberle on both buff goals

  24. RockinRey says:

    On the second period goal- It boggles the mind. Markov got undressed because he went for the puck. These guys have played the game for years and years. They do one on ones in practice and two on ones and they continually screw them up!! ( He’s not the only elite guy that does this)

    All he had to do is stick his shoulder into his chest. Or stand him up. Unbelievable.

    Nice goal though…….

    • ffenliv says:

      A suggestion: if other elite guys do this, maybe it’s not as simple to fix as you suggest…

      • RockinRey says:

        Have a look at the replay. These guys screw up 2 on ones all the time taking the wrong guy . Its not easy stepping into a guys chest? He went to the puck. Counterintuitive to what he has been taught since day 1 on skates.

        • ffenliv says:

          And yet, these guys do it all the time, according to you.

          So, perhaps the fact that the best defenseman on the planet are doing this is a clue: the situations are hard to read in the 1/100th of a second they have to make a decision, and the balance often favours what turns out to be a mistake.

  25. Kimberly2u says:

    Budaj deserves to win this game

  26. habsfan0 says:

    Seeing Max Pac hobble off after blocking that shot,maybe he should consider wearing a pair of skate protectors. I believe PK wears them.

  27. RockinRey says:

    Dont think he had a system. Even Jacques Martin’s system and Guys’s system have to be questioned. How can you say you have a system ( like they did in Washington and Pit ) in the playoffs and get outshot every game? Our system is to get outshot and hang on for dear life? Ridiculous!

  28. Adidess says:

    The argument that people enjoy watching a good fight, stand up and cheer when it happens, is true.

    But it is an interesting one. People watch all sorts of thing because it is in front of them, cue the ‘car crash’ analogy.

    I don’t how many people are truly disappointed when their team wins and there is no fight at the game. You may be when your team loses, thinking a fight might have changed something. But I don’t know. If and when NHL fights are eliminated, I’ll be ready.

  29. gumper says:

    No, no Randy. Try Cole, DD, Patches; Eller, Pleks, Bourque; Boom, Gomer, White…sub in LL and Staubs strategically. Bob’s yer uncle.

  30. Mavid says:

    max is back…really?

  31. nellis13 says:

    Homer Simpson was holding him back.

  32. 24 Cups says:

    The Habs are hanging on by a thread. It will be interesting to see if they can overcome a 4th road game with a 4 hour time difference from Vancouver. Gerbe and Ennis are playing the way Gomez used to do ten years ago.

    Props to Budaj.

  33. novahab says:

    If I was sitting behind the Montreal bench .I would have reach over and smacked CC upside his stupid head. Hey you get a PP you put Marhov on from the start with PK. If either are to tired you call a time out. GD if your going to be a NHL coach think like one.

  34. Propwash says:

    Hadta listen to most of the game on 990AM, sounded like Budaj is having a good night thankfully, was Cole’s goal a nice one?

      Budaj has been playing for that #1 spot that seems to be open for next year :) hehe
      Jokes aside, I don’t think Budaj’s numbers do him justice this year… the guy plays once a month if that… you cannot expect a goalie to perform well in the NHL with that much time off… I think he has done well whenever he was called upon…

      • Propwash says:

        Don’t get me wrong, I have no beef with Budaj whatsoever, the guy does well in the backup role, looking at the shot clock, I’m happy he’s on top of it.

  36. Adidess says:

    Does anyone else feel like the way Subban is playing now and since the the AS break, he’s clearly the nb 1 D-man on this team defensively? That may change when Markov gets closer to 100%, but with PK’s physical play I’d trust him more than anybody else.

    Offensively, he’s already the best behind Markov. Night and day with the beginning of the season!

    Looking at the old poll questions, and came across this one, had a bit of a laugh:

    Where do you expect the Canadiens to finish this season?

    Middle of the pack in the East (54%, 1,183 Votes)
    Win the Northeast division (28%, 618 Votes)
    Fighting for the final playoff spot (15%, 334 Votes)
    Miss the playoffs (3%, 72 Votes)

    Total Voters: 2,207

    Start Date: September 22, 2011 @ 11:23 am

    • punkster says:

      That is funny, ’cause I swear there were about 2200 people in here Saturday saying “I said back in September they wouldn’t make the playoffs and I was right!”.

    • ffenliv says:

      I remember seeing that poll way, way back when, and voting ‘middle of the pack’.

      Oh the optimism of … a brutally terrible pre-season

    Budaj made a Halakian pass.

  55. krulmadden says:

    What a save by Budaj!

  56. Mondou6 says:

    For those saying that Markov wasn’t playing as much tonight, TSN just showed that he actually played more minutes in the 1st period tonight than he did in his last game.

    So maybe they are just starting him slowly in each game.

  57. 24moreCups says:

    Hope Pacs is alright after blocking that shot.

  58. 24 Cups says:

    Glad to see TSN acknowledge Herb Carnegie who died at the age of 92. He was a hero and inspiration to many people. Please check heck out his Future Aces website.

  59. Steeltown Hab says:

    Gomez centering Eller and Leblanc. Someone tell me why the f a guy who has no part in our future plans, who doesn’t contribute takes C and pushes Eller to the wing, It’s been clear for a while that Eller is a straight up Centreman, his defensive play, hussle, set up ability translate way better in the middle. AND He’s somehow still developing without any help from this coaching staff

  60. Mondou6 says:

    Is it my imagination, or is Campoli playing pretty well?

  61. HardHabits says:

    Player :: TOT :: SHF :: AVG
    CAMPOLI, CHRIS :: 07:59 :: 8 :: 00:59
    EMELIN, ALEXEI :: 07:21 :: 12 :: 00:36
    KABERLE, TOMAS :: 06:14 :: 8 :: 00:46
    SUBBAN, P.K. :: 05:35 :: 11 :: 00:30
    GORGES, JOSH :: 05:13 :: 10 :: 00:31
    MARKOV, ANDREI :: 05:04 :: 10 :: 00:30
    WEBER, YANNICK :: 03:57 :: 5 :: 00:47

    Interesting first period for the Habs. Campoli had the most ice time and the longest shifts for defence men being paired with Emelin, Kaberle and Weber.

    On RDS they are talking about two changes I had hoped would happen. The elimination of hand passes in the defensive zone has been mentioned today (thanks GJ) but Benoit Brunet on RDS added that the league is also considering having the 5 minutes of 4 on 4 OT followed by 5 minutes of 3 on 3. Yeah baby!!!

  62. RockinRey says:

    Congrats to Saku Koivu on 1000 games tonight. Good for him!

  63. Mavid says:

    the TSN guys talking saying that some GM’ s are complaining about the officiating..I bet one of them is from Ottawa…they are always crying about the ref’s

  64. It is interesting to note that Kabs and Campoli are carrying the most D minutes. AND with Markov back, the Goat is looking more like a genius in signing him long term.

        • twilighthours says:

          You know, I don’t really like fighting in the NHL and wish it wasn’t in the game. I also don’t know what hidden value staubitz has.

          But there are a lot of current and former NHL players who say that having a guy like him around is valuable.

          And it is possible they know more than we do.

          • Bill says:

            I obviously don’t deny that NHL players know more than me. Of course they do. But when an NHL player is asked about the value of a goon, you can’t expect an honest answer: they aren’t going to diss their teammates.

            Why don’t we ask the Red Wings why they don’t need an enforcer?

          Staubitz..Le Grand Orange 2

        • Mr. Biter says:

          Goon Faction reporting, if Malone would not have been banished he would have met Mr Staubitz to pay for his sins. If Staubitz would have come off the bench you would have been saying how stupid he was for negating the up coming penalty. I actually think Emelin is hurt as I asked the same question before the Canuks game. But since the Malone incident (and Staubitz did punish the other Lighting tough guy) I don’t remember too many people running the Habs smaller players espically the Canuks after Staubitz disposed of their tough guy or vs. the Leafs when he took Brown out and even though we lost, no leafs were taking their usual liberties with the habs players.

          Mr. Biter
          No Guts No Glory

        • ProHabs says:

          Since we got Staubitz, it is very obvious the team has been playing bigger and have not been pushed around as much. Believe me, without Staubitz, Kassian for Vancouver and Brown for Toronto would have been running at all players all game. Staubitz took care of them both and many others Bill.

      • 24moreCups says:

        I guess he might be worried about someone going after him again after one of those big hits(clean ones), since he isn’t able to fight.

    • ffenliv says:

      It may just be part of the NHL feeling-out process for him. As much as I, and many other players dislike it, a *lot* of players will go after you, or their tough-guy team-mates will, for a big, clean, punishing hit.

      Emelin may skate away from any fight, but the crazy that Malone displayed may have shaken him a bit into realising that, stupid as it is, a fight may come to him.

      And, if someone jumps him, I doubt the other guy getting a penalty and a small suspension will be any comfort if his career is ruined when his face caves in.

    • Sean Bonjovi says:

      Emelin started going out of position for some hits, so I imagine the coaches are trying to reel him in a bit.

  74. English is not a Crime says:

    The Poll question isn’t a yes/no answer. They will and they won’t. They will in so much as it wrecked their season this year by putting too much into a player that wound up not playing until the season was already decided and it cost them a year, they won’t in that it leaves them with the potential for one of the better defenders in the league next year if he can stay healthy. Sometimes these things aren’t always black and white
