First vs. Worst
And both teams played true to form.
It took the Canadiens almost 14 minutes to get a shot on goal in the third period.
By Brad Staubitz.
The home team scored twice on the power play.
Rene Bourque, of all people, deprived Henrik Lundqvist of a ninth shutout
And with less than two minutes left, Andrei Markov got hurt.
* Pre-game reading: Who should get Gauthier’s job?

Letting Markov return to action was pretty dumb. Worst case: he gets hurt. Best case: he makes the team better when losing is in the long-term best interest of the franchise. I know he was going crazy to play again, but they never should have let him return this season. Oh, and those doctors that promised he’d be ready for October? Let’s not use those guys anymore.
NHL hockey is a thing of the past on TV here in Bangkok.
They replaced the only decent sports channel with two more soccer channels!
At least that means Cherry and Maclean and McGuire are invisible for the most part.
C’est la vie!
What a shame!
Last bastion of NHL in SE Asia gone.

What does the Commissioner of the NHL do?
In short, a league commissioner is the action man for the Board of Governors.
They tell him what they want done and he works to make it happen through his subordinates while making sure that individual franchises play by the rules.
******** Translated if you haven’t won the Stanley Cup in 40 years your NHL team is becoming irrelevant in a sports mad city long behind MLB, NFL and NBA teams, you just tell the commissioner(who you gave a new contract at 7 plus million per) to make it happen and the rules are bent sufficiently to action the command.
4 more games. end the pain
I left MSG after the 4th goal and missed bourque’s goal. I have been attending hand games outside of mtl since I moved to the US in 87 and I cannot ever remember being as emotionally detached at a game than I felt tonight. I was looking more towards a late NYC dinner with the wife. What a season.
I hope the new coach and GM take a good hard look at our goaltending situation. It’s pretty shaky.
I would say thats the only position that isn’t shaky. No goalie is going to stand on his head every game, especially when you play him for 70+. Sure Price has had some bad games this year, but he’s also almost solely responsible for what little wins the team does have, and he has been given little to no help night in and night out.
If you ask me Price is one of the bright spots on the team, if you ice a solid team in front of him I have no doubt he’ll be near the top of the league statistic wise.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s ok. But just ok. Now that Gainey and his goat are gone I hope we can start to see things objectively. I think Carey has a bong hit after the second period of every game.
I agree, good but not great.
Anyone suggested Pierre McGuire/V Damphousse combo for GM/Asst.
Pierre.. potentially very good passinate knwledgeable.
Vinny.. Planning for the future(french, quebecois, alumni, etc etc).
Makes good sense for now and good sense for 5 yrs from now.
Makes no sense now. And less five years from now.
How about they have NO EXPERIENCE running a pro franchise?
How about someone like Brisebois from TB or Bergevin from Chicago?
Touting guys who speak well on tv is a bleeping joke.
@Bill
I agree that there are not any Top Centers available, and that a top 6 LW would do wonders for Plekanec/Gio line (assuming DD doesn’t regress as many players do after quick success).
Where I disagree is Moen as a 3rd liner. He needs to be a 4th liner on a top tier team, and will be bumped up when injuries come.
Price had better step up his game next season. This season’s woes have left him immune to criticism. However, like on many nights, he gave up too many softies tonight.
If I were the new GM, I would get a viable backup who can actually step into n#1. Price needs this type of pressure. Enough coddling, time to MAN UP Price. Otherwise, we should cut bait next year before we get our Luongo problem.
What a dumb idea.
That’s Gauthier type panic-thinking right there.
That’s how Cammalleri got traded for a brutal player with a bad contract and a draft pick.
They don’t call him MR. Softie for nothing.
Why is Price still the starting goalie every night? He must be bored out of his mind by now. Going through the motions.
Richard R
If anyone with common sense can’t see the Montreal Canadiens are a very weak team you must enjoy every game you watch. I see 4 possible 5 good forwards if you see anymore let me know. I must be missing something.
Claude Lemieux for head coach. He’d say no.
Richard R
There’s not much to say about this fiasco except we can all hope its actually the worst they can reach in terms of levels of hell. Personally, I don’t think they are going to right this shape for another year yet. REady for another lottery pick next year? Me either..lol…we have some talent and I do like a lot of what’s in the pipeline as well as what we will most likely get in the 1st this year (ie) a franchise forward. But with all the change in mngmt. and coaching that is coming, it may take a full season to establish what’s what. Quick turnaround doesn’t seem likely but after next year, we should be back to being a respectable team.
Nothings worse than mediocrity when it comes down to it though. Have to hold our noses for a while ..we truly stink this year and probably next whcih is hopefully for a better tomorrow.
was Bourque’s goal nice at least? I clearly did not have the stomach to watch the whole game…
FIRED GAUTHIER, FIRED GAUTHIER, FIRED GAUTHIER
Imagine the team with Ribiero, Ryder, McDonough, Halak, Moore, SK74, AK46, O’Byrne, Cammy…..and subtract Gomez, Bourque, Kaberle, etc……..and you get a solid playoff team.
While I am very pleased to see Gauthier/Gainey out, they have truly mortgaged this team for the next 3 years with these terrible moves. Hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

For all the optimists and pessimists out there, who cares if the glass is half full or half empty? The realist might point out that it’s what’s in the glass that matters…this sums up what’s in the Habs’ glass nicely

The TSN guys say the Habs need a top line LW (Parise) A physical D-man (Allen) and a “utility” 3rd liner (Kelly).
Add all that and the Habs still would need a Number One Center.. but would be a def. contender for the division.
That Number One Centre is not out there though. That’s why Burke overpaid to keep Grabovski.
With another good LW the Habs could get by with DD, Pleks, and Eller. The key is that Pleks needs good, consistent wingers, otherwise he’s wasted.
So a good, top-six LW to play with Pleks and (hopefully) a resurgent Bourque. Then a quality physical winger to play with Eller and Moen (must be resigned). THEN someone to play with White on the fourth line. Someone like Staubitz or Blunden, but hopefully better. THEN a physical stay-at-home D for the 3rd pairing.
Okay, THEN the Habs should be in good shape! Haha, tall order …

Nobody should be upset at this loss or at our team. The season is over thanks to everything going wrong – no need to rehash.
It’s time to look ahead to next season.
Tankers are getting their high pick, and Optimists are sure, that with a new GM, the team will be very much improved come October, and beyond.
Markov will never be OK – He’s a one hit wonder – everytime he gets hit in the corner you wonder if he’s coming out – that’s why I call him the one hit wonder. nothing against the Guy, he’s been a good defencemen in the games he’s played through out his career but he has a injury that’s never gonna go away so in a real world he’s not reliable that’s why Dumb, Dumb PG should have never signed him. bad signings has been the demise of the Habs…. 28th place in league standings should be enough proof.
I actually suggested the Habs should trade him last season, let alone re-sign him. Of course, if I were actually the guy making those decisions I’m not sure I would have had the courage to do it.
Well at least you guys can’t blame Carey for blowing the lead.
We have 14 home wins, which is worst in the NHL.
Columbus has 16 home wins.
yeah, but those 14 wins earned the leagues top ticket revenue.
Which knee is Markov’s bad one. That hit got him on his left knee, is that the one?
His right knee is the bad one.
Both his knees are good now! No bad one….
knocks on wood..

I remember you mentioned spending time in Asia was it long ago?
I used to pass through Thailand once a month for 18 years and it was the only place in South East Asia where NHL Hockey was on TV!
All that and nice folks to boot!

Bork was a good player in Calgary.
’nuff said, discuss, mark my words, IMHO, ____ sucks (fill in the blank), fire his a$$ (no one left to fire).

He had linemates? He wasn’t a whipping boy? No high expectations?
Who the heck knows how he scored 27 goals.
Hey, I would like nothing better than for him to show that everyone is wrong about him. The Habs need him to rebound, because he’s not going anywhere.
To be fair, he wasn’t a whipping boy off the bat. A lot of people liked the idea of a bigger, tougher, cheaper 27 goal scorer. But you have to admit, he’s shown very little bigness, toughness, or 27 goal-scoring.
As for high expectations, man, you’re in the NHL. These guys have dealt with high expectations their whole lives.
Full Breezer 4 Life
I agree Bill. The whole team sucks. Pleks is the polar opposite of who he was last season.
I’m just not ready, yet, to write Bourque off, that’s the only difference from everything I’ve been reading.
We let Cammalleri get away with murder before we started slagging him. lol
Trade Plekanec, our 1st, and any prospect to Fla for Huberdeau and Mathias.
KIDDIN!!!!!!!!!
Boone…cheer up man…we’re playing for draft picks now…definately don’t want to get more points than the Leafs.
You’re a potential GM watching this game and you think you can’t possibly do worse than this.

Apology accepted.
I’ve never said anything on this site or anywhere else that was insulting to French people or the French language. I may not agree that the Canadiens coach should have to be Francophone, but I hope you will agree that that does not mean I “demonize” anything.

Oilers will be tough to catch.
They have 2 shots in the 1st period against the Kings.
Leafs, Oilers, Habs all obviously pursuing the same strategy.

Bourque YES!! Maybe that trade isn’t looking so bad after all.
Bork has kinda been a dog, but most of us gave gomer a season and a half before we started ripping him. For bork it started after 5 games

OK, as a hockey fan, even when I have no skin in the game, I watch the playoffs and “adopt” a team. Who are you folks pulling for? I am going to go out West and root for the Blues. JD, Jaro, Hitch, that’s my rationale. No, I pissed away all my support for the Rags live in the blue seats at Game #6 against the Bs in ’72. Yes, that left a scar!
