Liveblog: Canadiens make it five in a row

PleksRangers

Quick!
Get out of New York before the cops get to Madison Square Garden.
Outplayed for 40 minutes in their second game in two nights, your Montreal Canadiens got a go-ahead goal from rookie Alex Galchenyuk and an empty-netter by Raphael Diaz to upset the Rangers.
And guess who sits atop the Eastern Conference standings?

It was Galchenyuk’s second of the season and first on the road.

Diaz’s goal was his first.

Carey Price made 24 stops

Boing007, not too many teams have won the Cup more than twice in the last 34 years. See Flyers, Leafs, Bruins, Sabres, Kings, etc.

Hey McDonagh, wanna come back to play for a real team?

  3. LUCASHOCKEY13 says:

  4. 25insight says:

The Habs played EXACTLY the type of game that a tired team needs to play. Like a tired boxer constantly grabbing his opponent, the Habs iced the puck more times that I can count to keep the game from getting any kind of fast-flow to it. They were a wall of iron defensively and were very opportunistic in the Rangers’ zone. The first star for this game should be Michel Therrien.

  5. HowieFlinker says:

While we are annointing folks who chose Michel Therrien as coach? Who drafted Galchenyuk when a few G.M.s feared his health? Who signed Brandon P:rust? Who insisted with Michel Therrien that the kids learn to play in the N.H.L. (with more bigger, faster kids to come next year)? Plaudits to M. Bergevin who seems to have a sensible long-term building plan even if the Canadians will surely run into a cold streak among the many road games in March.

  9. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

We were discussing Brian Boyle’s availability last week…he looked weak tonight. Looks like he has lost his aggressiveness without Prust around.

  10. TomFoolery says:

Montreal has beaten every team in the Eastern Conference except for Boston, Toronto, and Pittsburgh.

Also, rarely do I complain, but TSN pisses me off. I am curious as to their explanation for posting Tortorella’s post-game interview in which he says “it was one of the worst hockey games [he] has ever been a part of,” and that “these were two bad teams playing.” [sic] To my knowledge (and the video evidence is pretty clear), TSN rarely posts any non-canadian interview in which a Canadian team participates. OK…now I am nitpicking.

    • habsgod says:

and we will beat those teams too this year!

    • podbay says:

TSN? The Toronto Sports Network? If it ain’t about the Leafs, then it doesn’t matter. TSN and HNIC have had a Habs Hate-on since the days after Danny Gallivan passed. It’s no surprise that they would air Tort’s misguided and whiny comment afterward. “Two bad teams…” Seriously? What a maroon.

  11. Chuck says:

So I guess that Cole owes Price a big fat juicy steak after tonight.

  12. krob1000 says:

PK played the fewest minutes on D without very much special teams play…..Diaz led the way…but they were all very close and kept very fesh…
I wonder if PK stepping up on that play was a factor? should have beencovered byt he forwards but it did take everyone out of their comfort zone. Bouillon was forced to slide over…but COle could have at least tried to backcheck

    • RetroMikey says:

I love the way Diaz is focused out there on the ice and off as well, keep playing him with MAakov on the PP than Subban….and Bouillion looks like he has never llost a step coming back to Montreal after a short hiatus.
Anyone still think Andre Kostitsyn will come back to the NHL?

“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “

      • krob1000 says:

Bouillon is another “safe” player….that is why I think MT likes Armstrong so much…he isn’t flashy and his offensive days are behind him…but he is a pretty crafty old vet and is far smarter than I remember him…all I ever knew him for were his borderline hits and tap ins from Sid…he is doing what is asked and is to the forwards along with Moen what Boullon is to the D….they are all team first guys..only interested in helping out and the team is taking on this perosnality. Guys like Prust, Eller,.etc…heck Galchenyuk blocked a shot and theboys made sure to congratulate him on the bench. He has probably never had to do that like that before….
It was great to see and the enthusiasm the guys are showing for one another is really contagious nad for the first time in a few years I really really am liking the chemistry and feel I can connect with the team…it was hard after them letting KOivu walk and that dreaded trade, etc

      • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Laraque has a better chance than Andre K…

    • bellcentre hotdog says:

I could not believe the effort … Or rather lack there of … Cole exhibited on the Ranger goal tonight. There’s no way you could hang that one on Price or PK.

      • krob1000 says:

First Pk should have waited it out as the backpressure was there…I think he had visions of his two big hits last night…but there were two guys on his side so he should have backed in more with his stick out near the puck and not given up the space. it still should have been ok but Cole did nothing for some reason….Bouillon was forced to go over and that was it…but PK did take a sort of chance there…not a terrible one but it wasn’t the right play in that situation with two opposing guys on his side…but he should have been bailed out and Cole is still the real goat of the play but PK is not guilt free on that one.

        • bellcentre hotdog says:

Agreed … But Cole did nothing … Except to watch and throw his hands up after the goal went in. He could easily have made a move after the first shot. Not good enough.

  13. Marc10 says:

    No Price. No Problem.
    No Gally. No problem.
2 games in 2 nights. No worries!

This is a team. That question has been answered.
It’s still going to be one heck of a slug feast to he finish line, but kudos to the team for banking those points and putting the effort in.

Oh Columbus! You’re going to spend many years wondering what might have been. The kid is taking flight!

    • Strummer says:

In fairness to Columbus, they could have drafted Gretzky and he would have failed

    • RetroMikey says:

We should have more lockouts and reduced 48 game schedules, I believe it favours the smaller, skilled teams like Montreal.
Don’t know how we would endure a normal 82 regular season, based on our past records of having the injury bug affect us.

“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “

  14. Adidess says:

Who would have thought? The PP has not scored (in how many games?), we still don’t have that big crease-clearing D to help out our goalies, but somehow this team is atop the standings in the East…

1st place – Wanna say it over and over… until Pitt and Bos play again

  15. Say Ash says:

Am I the only one making tonight’s standings their wallpaper?

  16. OMG says:

What is going on with cole? Great last year. a no show this year. That’s sad. Next question. what are we gonna do with Gallaghar when he returns. Eller is playing great on the wing with Galchenyuk.

It would be awful to put Cole in the press box that’s the only thing I can see unless white loses it again and Eller could take his place.

Nice problem to have I guess after last years record.
Another great game tonight guys and we fans are proud of ya.

I guess we’ll have to wait until the Stanley Cup Final to find out.

“We know that hockey is where we live, where we can best meet and overcome pain and wrong and death. Life is just a place where we spend time between games.”

  25. krob1000 says:

The Canadiens are just trying to play mistake free hockey….they are treating everyminute of every game as if it is a playoff game….and it is working. Other teams are playing a similar style which is why we are seeing the soccer matches out there. The Canadiens were not dramatically outplayed for 2 periods…both teams were content to wait it out for mistakes…the Habs flinched first and messed up when Subban stepped upo and then Cole decided to take upo the opportunity to see a Rangers goal up close in MSG.
The team is playing very disciplined smart hockey and will be in nearly every game….the team has several gusy who can score and is playing like the New Jersey Devils without necesarilytrapping constnatly. The general idea is the same only they pressure the puck but they still breka things up in the nuetral zone and don;t give up amny odd man rushes…they wait to capitalize on a turnovers (at least they try to force them) and they have goalscorers on each line. The depth is key…
BTW how the hell do the BRuins only have 2 games this week?

    • DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Cole was brutal on that goal but made it up on the tying goal. Habs playing tight but that’s not a bad strategy when you have one of the best goalies.

    • HardHabits says:

They are aggressive in the sense of using their speed to pressure the opponent… thus forcing bad passes, slowing down attacks and creating turnovers. It’s not passive at all like JM’s system, and I find it to be much more defensively responsible.

      • krob1000 says:

It is a difficult style though if you do not have 4 lines and good hockey IQ…fortunately the team is actually very intelligent …it is very apparent out there when someone half asses it…and it is a testament to the intensity they are playing with (despite it not being firewagon style)…..every time a guy stops moving his feet you notice…that is actually a really positive thing

        • HardHabits says:

Ryan White on the face-off that had Diaz ice the game. Pure team concept. More skating forward and toward as opposed to constantly skating backwards and being skated into.

    • HaBo says:

Agreed. Habs have enough intelligent/skilled players across 3 lines; even 4, when Eller plays there. Most teams only have skilled guys on 1 or 2 lines and thats it. And I really like Whites game since returning. He’s creating some chances out there too. Watch for him.

\”Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing\”

    • krob1000 says:

That is all I have seen is consistency….they are playing a very conservative style …they actually remind me of the some of the Roy teams where the team played a defensive style knowing they could score 2 or 3 goals every night and if they kept the opposition to less than 3 they would win. They are playing playoff hockey with the shortened season and all interconference…you will not seethe gambling and firewagon game. You will see pressure on the forecheck….a high man always ready to ensure odd man rushes are stopped (notice the trend in the game right now for the d on 3 on 2′s to force the wide guy just inside the blueline….that takes an immemse amount of trust in your backcheck…and because all teams are iun playoff mode it is working)

Bergy is the king of knee-jerk reactions. Now he’s saying MB should resign Budaj to stay on as back-up since he gets along so well with Price and the guys like him. Not saying that’s wrong, but I don’t remember Michel Bergeron as a believer in Budaj or somebody who’s been particularly supportive.

in all honesty the habs were not outplayed that badly. Ya the rangers forechecked well, but all they did was throw it along the boards. the second it came out in front the habs cleared it. Obviously there were times the habs had trouble but that’s the difference between a team that is well rested and not

So glad we have Chucky and the team playing this way, solid team hockey and a more aggressive style, with the guys sticking up for each other. Win or lose, this is a fun team to watch. I think we can make some noise in the playoffs. That being said, we should not alter the roster by making trades for rentals, we should stay on the current path and keep developing this team.

I thought he after White’s previous meltdowns that he would be the new O’Byrne but MT sat him down, sent the message and had him taking an important draw in his own zone at the end of the game.

Eller is playing much better since sitting out. Much more noticeable.

I wish he would play Subban more and reduce Markov’s ice time but otherwise things look good in Habland.
