Liveblog: Kings of the road

DDFlorida

The Canadiens finish their longest road trip of the season with a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers.
That’s four wins in five games since the amazing first-place team packed their bags to leave Montreal.
Michael Ryder got his first two goals, both on the power play, since returning to the Canadiens and added an assist.
David Desharnais, Brian Gionta and Francis Bouillon, with his first of the season, completed the scoring.
Tomas Kopecky (credited with a goal when Bouillon shot one past Peter Budaj) and Shawn Matthias made it briefly interesting for Florida, scoring in the third period to make it 4-2.
The Canadiens outshot the home team 38-16.

Tomas Plekanec had a pair of assists and P.K. Subban had three.

Andrei Markov recorded the 300th assist of his career.

I lost all respect for Tiger after his ex-wife sent him to that sex re-hab clinic in Texas. And he went! Just before she dumped him.

  37. Dunboyne Mike says:

    Sorry! Not superstitious!
It’s No. 1 vs No. 15 — couldn’t we look on this as yet another measuring-stick game and hope that we BURY the Panthers?

    CRY ‘HAVOC’!etc

  38. anotherhab says:

A big win would be awesome tonite, then a little R&R might be in order since after today we only play 5 games in the next 15 days (2 Buff, 1 Ott, 1 NYI and 1 NJ), some time to heal up the injuries.

  39. habsoul says:

Really enjoying this season. This looks like a team that’s just entering its window of opportunity. An appearance in a Stanley Cup Final is a real possibility in the next 3-5 years.

As we say in the computer biz, it starts at the top. And that means Molson and Bergevin. I loved Bob Gainey the player but his years at the helm were forgettable. A good eye for talent kept the team in limbo—right around on the periphery of a playoff slot. Not good enough to challenge for a Cup, not bad enough to score a generational talent like Crosby or Malkin.

“When you are the Canadiens, you cannot make excuses.”
    — Henri Richard, on what it meant to be a Montreal Canadian

  40. frontenac1 says:

Canada 3 USA 2 Top of the 7th. Loved Ernie Whitts comments when asked by the US media about players getting hit by projectiles from the Mexican fans. “They”re Canadians! You can’t hurt them.”

  48. JF says:

Jacob Markstrom was in goal for the Panthers against us early last season in a game the Panthers won 2-1. Budaj was in goal for us (I think it was his first start) and played well, but Markstrom absolutely stole the game.

  49. SPATS says:

I was surprised by Darche’s fumbling for describing a shoulder injury in french, is it his first or second language? I know he went to McGill… Anyone know?

OOH AAH – HABS ON THE WARPATH!

  50. Da Hema says:

Boone writes, “Ovechkin minus-3 against the Rangers. Funny no one compares him to Crosby anymore.” The mystery is how anyone thought he was close to Crosby in the first place….

  51. w.p.d says:

Was Darche really finished ? No value on this team ?

  52. Propwash says:

  55. HabinBurlington says:

What kind of measuring stick game do we have today?

  56. vancouverite says:

Getting ready for this game from the W Coast feels like it’s a matinee !
Optimistic that our Prustless Habs will give us a team effort that will win it for us !
Also, nothing has been said of Emelin’s great play of late. His spin-move (against Carolina?) at the blueline setup an important goal for us earlier this week, he seems more confident at the offensive blue line, putting pucks on net and pinching in when necessary. He also comes out with the puck pretty often in the Dzone and is good at getting it out. I think he is the big, bad Defensemen we have all been waiting for for so long.. (And for a Russian player with limited english skills, he seems to gel nicely with the group, he puts effort day-in day-out, you havn’t heard him saying crap to a russian newspaper) #kostitsyn
Each game that goes by, Emelin earns more and more of my respect. Oh yeah, and his hits, forgot to mention those…

  57. HabinBurlington says:

Mr. Boone I thought the rules of HI/O stipulate that you can only like either DD or Eller not both?

If we’re going to play another game 19 hours after our previous game…on the road…with the travel…I’m glad it’s against Florida.
Keep it simple…short shifts and we should get 2 points. Of course, I felt that way before Tuesday’s game against the NYI.

  60. Loonie says:

The speculation from Bruce Garrioch about the Panthers willing to trade anyone other than Gudbranson, Huberdeau, Markostrom and Shore prompted me to look at their NTC’s on cap geek and I stumbled on one of the funniest I’ve seen.

    Brian Campbell

“Can designate eight teams he will accept a trade to; team has 45 days from the date notice received to trade him to one of those teams”

Interesting. I wonder if there’s some missing information there. Like does Campbell’s NTC go to a full NMC if he isn’t traded after having provided the list and not moved?

His cap hit is prohibitive so it’s unlikely he’ll be moved anyway. But that’s one doozy of a NTC in my opinion.

  61. Danno says:

Mike, please give a good old-fashioned reverse jinx.

This positive thinking has no place on HIO.

  62. Timo says:

Sounds like Prust won’t be ready for the game against Bruins.

  63. habs-hampton says:

I’m re-posting this, because I really don’t understand why the NHL is the only league in the world with touch icing:

Maybe Stubbs, Hickey or Boone could answer this question. Who, exactly is against bringing in no-touch icing? I doubt its the players. Is it the GM’s? Most of them used to be players, so that makes no sense. It doesn’t add anything to the game, and I cringe everytime I see a chase for the puck.

So, again, who is against it?

    • Dunboyne Mike says:

Suits with heads up their own back passages aren’t even conscious of the issue.

Or, if they’re actually in favour of maintaining the status quo, they’re getting advice from Vince McMahon. (Remember broken legs on the XFL’s unique version of the kick-off?)

    • neumann103 says:

It is bizarre because at least with most of the no-brainer potential changes there is some type of identifiable constituency as a holdout. eg all of the “get goonery out of hockey proposals” have to contend with the fact that the NHLPA considers (correctly) the marginal 4th line goon a part of their constituency so they are unwilling to pit star player vs goon player. Or certain owners who view gooning as a marketing advantage.

I honestly do not understand what benefit touch icing provides to anyone or who (even out of inertia) would do anything to protect it.

      “Et le but!”

  64. Timo says:

Geez… calling for a sweep? Tired of winning? Talk about a jinx.

  65. HAB - Have A Beer says:

I have a feeling Dumont is gonna shine tonight. on the 3rd line with Eller & Galchenyuk. Looks like a very good 3rd line.

The good thing about this team. We have 3-lines that’s dangerous and teams can’t just focus on 1-line. 1 or 2 points tonight will make this a very good road trip. I think they can do it.

  66. Buzz Lightbeer says:

If Pateryn is gonna play under 10 minutes and be kept on a short leash as much as i hate to say it i would play Kaberle tonight. Last game of a road trip and a back to back game a veteran with fresh legs is probably a good idea. He seems to play better after a few days off anyway.

  67. Mavid says:

nice broom, I am better at flying them than actually using them to sweep
