Liveblog: Canadiens beat Panthers 1-0 in OT

BourquePanthers

The Canadiens’ fourth overtime pairing – Alex Galchenyuk and Rene Bourque – produced the game’s only goal.
And your Montreal Canadiens – with Shootout and OT wins – swept the Sunshine State.

Galchenyuk – making a brilliant play on crap ice – set Bourque up for the winner.

‘Fess up: When they headed south after that embarrassing loss to the Leafs, did anyone think the Canadiens would be headed home with four points in the bag?

Carey Price stopped 26 shots for his first shutout of the season, 17th of his young career.

    Great win

Mark C i agree, great game by Eller. He broke up many chances on the FLA rush with a solid backcheck and made some strong plays with the puck as well. Time to give the kid a little leash and flip him with DD for a few games. Im sure hes tired of looking back and seeing Moen and Armstrong lagging badly behind. Big 2 pts, atta boy Scarey!

  3. NCRhabsfan says:

If you’re wondering why there are so many empty seats at Panther games, watch the first two periods again. They should give away free beer when the hockey is that boring. If it always looked like that hockey would have gone the way of the Dodo before the Dodo did.

Maybe they need a new boredom rule. If more than 33% of the fans are asleep by the second intermission, both teams have to play the third period 4 on 4 with no shin pads.

Anyone know Dr. Peter Venkman’s phone number?

I’m not a scout but I saw elite level D played by Eller tonight.

Did Mario Tremblay ever complain when Larry Robinson went end to end and scored a goal? Or Lemaire? Lafleur? Ferme ta gueule, Mario.

  9. SuperHabFan says:

For those wondering why the seats looked so empty its because of club red. I dunno if the rest of the building was empty cuz the camera doesnt pan all over the place but this may explain right in front of the camera.

  10. OMG says:

Bourque would be a good winger for the kids. Max PAC with Pleks and Gionta. Still say Eller with Prust and Cole. DD with Moen and Armstrong.

  11. Bripro says:

    Snoozer? For certain.
But 4 points out of 4. We’ll all take it.

    • savethepuck says:

I thought it was actually an exciting, edge of your seat, 3rd period though. Even though neither team capitalized on their chances.

      • HardHabits says:

The 1st two periods were snoozers. The 3rd started to get tense the closer they got to OT. I however did very much enjoy Bourque’s goal so over all it was worth it. :-)

I know it’s complaining, but ever notice how when the Leafs win, TSN updates the standings as soon as the game is over, but when the Habs win, it takes forever?

    • Mattyleg says:

      That bothers me not.
TSN acts in a completely predictable manner.
If they started doing nice things to the Habs and their fans, I’d start to get suspicious.

I HAVE noticed, NHL.com as well. Even though its hockey, and they dont give a shit about it and I hate them for hundreds of reasons, ESPN always has standing almost up to the minute. Go there.

They have at least two guys covering the Leafs full-time, tweeting away quotes, writing articles and stuff. Sort of like Dave Stubbs, but not as part of a local newspaper, for ‘Canada’s’ sports channel. C’est la vie.

  14. FunkyCrabChairNF says:

Not to be morally grotesque, but I’m feeling the Karlsson injury might have gift wrapped a playoff spot for this team. Of course, anything whack-a-doo could happen.

  15. Say Ash says:

Did Pleks trip the guy or not?

  16. HardHabits says:

Two things I’d like to mention about tonight’s game:

Desharnais played like he smelled Eller at his heels.

Subban played his best game. There were two plays he did that really stuck out. On the PP, I think it was the 1st period he wound up to slap and instead wristed a shot/pass to Bourque who deflected the puck just wide of the net. That was a high IQ play and I’m glad to see Subban using his mind out there and not just his physique. The 2nd play he did that I thought really stood out and was equally high IQ was in the 3rd when he took the puck inside the opposing blue line and skated around two Panthers then came in on the left wing and took a shot from the circle.

    • otter649 says:

One of the players Subban went around was Kovy……

    • Adidess says:

Well, did you hear the one on L’Antichambre tonight where Mario Tremblay explains he saw signs in this game that PK is slowly reverting back to trying to do too much by himself, instead of passing? I was going to punch my TV, but turned it off instead.

      Signatures are annoying

      • habstrinifan says:

Thanks for the transaltion. I really cant understand players like Tremblay who came from the 70′s HABS who gave us such ‘skill’ players bashing a play like P.K made.

Edit: If you read this can you comment on the ‘response’ from the others… dd they agree?

      • jedimyrmidon says:

Pretty idiotic. They’d probably rather have Subban dump it in so that someone else can lose the puck. Many Habs players could learn a thing or two from Subban and holding on to the puck.

    • savethepuck says:

Loved the play by Subban in the 3rd you are referring to. Showed great individual skill and had a great scoring chance because of it.

      • HardHabits says:

I liked the way he imposed himself on that play.

He showed good leadership out there tonight. It’s still early and a long road to where he is going but for the first time since he came back I feel he is on track and aimed in the right direction. I commend Therrien and Bergevin for that.

        • savethepuck says:

Too many over reaction complaints Tuesday night when his ice time was limited after his mistakes on the 1st goal. He seemed to rebound very well instead of sulking and wanting to be traded, like many feared. Was 3rd on Habs in TOI tonight.

  19. habs-fan-84 says:

    So we’re 8-4-1

    Anyone still complaining?

  20. shootdapuck says:

Someone should lock Stock and Bergeron in a padded room and see who survives

  21. savethepuck says:

Not the most entertaining first 2 periods, the 3rd had a lot more action and scoring chances though, but nobody could pot 1. Great effort by Chucky on the OT goal, good hands by Bourque ( we need a nickname for him, too many letters to type ) to bat it out of the air. No matter how you think the team played in the Sunshine state, it’s great they are on there way home with 4 pts. I can live with 8-4-1, moves les boys into 5th, 1 pt behind Pitt for 4th with a game in hand and only 1 pt behind Boston for the division lead, although B’s have 2 games in hand.

I agree with our multi-tentacled friend below: MaxPac is probably our worst forward right now, he really needs to shape up or we’ll have to explore trading him.

what do you guys think he could get on the open market???

  26. habstrinifan says:

Leave Bourque with the Kids period… it’s gonna work.

Put Eler Armstrong Prust together for an extended time. This trio upgrade the play of Armstrong and Eller in one move… It will work.

  27. shootdapuck says:

Stock should be sold to NESN and teamed with Jack Edwards!

He used to try to be funny on L’Antichambre, was often used as a wipping boy, which he would take well enough. Now he just bloviates endlessly, pointing to things that are plain obvious to everyone, and being constantly negative. As they say here, ‘Il m’écoeure’.

Nice win for the Habs. Now outskate Philly on Saturday.
Chucky is mighty slick with the puck. Thats the Borque I want to see drive the net all season long. Leafs start their extended losing streak ( although not the young goalies fault.)

  37. deane paul says:

1st pax with the rookies. prust with cole and dd

OMG what a combo of skill and grit by Galchenyuk to make that happen. Watch the replay, battle off the D, keep control and put it right on net with a gimme for Bourque. This kid looks good. Hope he keeps it up.

  43. Old Bald Bird says:

Darn lucky that Pleks didn’t get a penalty.

  44. frontenac1 says:

Ha! Don’t look now amigos but Habs are now in 5th place with 17pts,yep ahead of Leafs with a game in hand! Half way through the 4 game mojo. 2 more wins coming up.

  45. Boomer says:

Bourque’s 1st star is well deserved he a a good game start to finish. Price was only really tested 1 period…

    • savethepuck says:

Fans bet on 3 stars and voting closes with about 5 minutes left in regulation. OT or SO winner automatically gets 1st star. A Saturday night game on HNIC does not have the fans voting.
