Liveblog: Canadiens beat Panthers 1-0 in OT

BourquePanthers

The Canadiens’ fourth overtime pairing – Alex Galchenyuk and Rene Bourque – produced the game’s only goal.
And your Montreal Canadiens – with Shootout and OT wins – swept the Sunshine State.

Galchenyuk – making a brilliant play on crap ice – set Bourque up for the winner.

‘Fess up: When they headed south after that embarrassing loss to the Leafs, did anyone think the Canadiens would be headed home with four points in the bag?

Carey Price stopped 26 shots for his first shutout of the season, 17th of his young career.

Has anyone noticed opposing players don’t carry the puck into the zone on Subban’s side anymore? He positions himself like he’s lining them up for the shoulder/back hit along the boards and guys invariably dump the puck deep. Or it’s just me.

He misses badly on occasion and gets out of position, but seems like other team forwards have taken notice.

Wish they would play Galchenyuk and Gallagher more. And I wish they would stop trying those stretch passes.

Any merit to splitting up the kids as an experiment?

  12. Marc10 says:

I’m not writing off Cole or Max. This short season has really thrown them for a loop, but we’re still winning more than we’re losing. Let’s see what happens. It’s going to be a battle every night and I suspect we’ll eventually get all shipmates back on song. It might just take a while for a couple to finally get it together…
That being said… We need a big D badly!

Prust is not a goal scorer, but Moen can score, change them up maybe, just a thought

  15. Prairienewf says:

Up to the end of last year PK didnt do much to help his cause but this year he’s been A1. Give the guy credit where credit is due. The stats seem to indicate he’s playing a more thoughful game. His minors are down and his point total are quite impressive. Has anyone save Boone made reference to the latter this year?

  16. Bripro says:

    It
It seems to me that Cole is injured again. A perfect feed on two separate occasions, and he blew them both. You don’t go from being dominant one year to cement boots the next.

  17. VancouverHab says:

    Max back, Prust back.

So, has anything that Therrien has done had any good effect on the Habs?

    Anyone?

  18. scavanau says:

I suffer in a predominately Boston market. Bruins fans believe Subban is worthless, nothing more than a mouth. On the other hand they LOVE Marchand and consider him the future of hockey.

  19. coppi928 says:

kids played 3 minutes, how are they going to improve or show anything? A wasted yr for Chucky if this is going to be the trend. With the shortened season players need to adapt to the back to back, eatinging properly and rest. At 19 this is too much for Chucky or any of the rookies.

    • Un Canadien errant says:

I think they’re doing a good job of sheltering him, giving him limited minutes. I’m a believer in progression rather than trial by fire, sink or swim. We need to be patient, and not be tempted to overburden the kid.

      • coppi928 says:

true but don’t you think he must be wondering why he’s playing limited minutes. Play the kid, correct him whenhe makes a mistake. Anything is better than some veterans that have diminished skills or lack of effort.

        • Bill says:

He’s a 19 year old rookie playing 10-12 minutes a game in the NHL, and you think he’s wondering about it?

          • coppi928 says:

he’s playing no more than a fourth line, the Habs have always shielded rookies thus the reason we havn’t had a good 1 in awhile. Let them play, seems other teams don’t have an issue playing the kids. Philly is a perfect example.

  20. boing007 says:

So much for experimenting with new line combinations.

  23. jedimyrmidon says:

Controversy is cultivated and nurtured by the media.

  24. Ronin says:

I agree with Clay. More and more i find the PK comments have no basis in reality and must be motivated by something irrational. Race? Jealousy?

    • Marc10 says:

It might be because of his ‘controversial’ stint as a weather man. I took issue with his predictions for that week…

    • Danno says:

They hate him because they don’t have him and he’s awesome

    • neumann103 says:

I am not someone who finds racism everywhere but I have no doubt that there is a racial basis for much of the anti-PK sentiment. I think it is largely unconscious and is more of an exacerbating factor than an outright cause, but it is there.Hockey is already bad enough with the traditional “keep your place” sentiment, but the race element pushes that across the line to getting “uppity”.

Boone I love you but goddammit you are so negative sometimes.
    Let’s go habs!

  27. neumann103 says:

I am not really sure what the mystery is about Emelin. ALL of his game: hitting, shooting, contain, backcheck suffers massively when he has to play the right side. Some guys can play the off side, but when he does he gets tentative, clumsy and unsure. I know it is nice to pain him with Markov on a Russian pairing but he HAS to play the left side.
The same thing happened last year.

  28. habsfan0 says:

Judging by the amount of empty seats, going to the hockey game was apparently not high on the list of things to do on Valentine’s Day for Miami area citizens.

  30. Prairienewf says:

Time for the coaching staff to have a sit down with Emelin. Yeah we know he can be a steady stay at home defenceman, though he’s been shaky this far this year but he’s being paid to contribute. Powerplay? NO. Penalty killing? Not really. Hitting? Uh Duh, Yeah. Thats what he does that makes the biggest impact and contribution. So whatta ya say Emmy? Can ya? Can Ya? Will ya? Will ya?

  32. TMan1969 says:

PK got to be allowed to create…

  33. Marc10 says:

Our lack of depth of D is clearly visible. Emelin’s not the confident guy that used to wallpaper guys. A bit of growing pains there. He needs a guy to cover for him while he finds his mojo. Markov’s not that guy anymore I’m afraid.
I know Gill is all but done in this short season, but we could use him as our resident Octopus/Wall on the PK. Swap him for Webber and a bag of pucks?

  34. Phil C says:

Theodore looks sharp. The Habs will need more traffic in front tonight to score.

    habs w
.ill have to get some traffic in front.

  35. Clay says:

So…the Florida interviewer just called PK Subban “one of the most controversial players in the NHL”. WTF????
I hate to say it, but when people say this about him over dirt-bags like Marchand or Cooke, I have to think it’s racially motivated.

    • HardHabits says:

Possibly. More than likely it’s because the interviewer knows less about hockey than I know about rocket surgery.

    • Adidess says:

I agree. I don’t understand how/why PK is controversial. All we know is the guy is a good young player who is flashy (has personality), and people enjoy talking about him. Does that make someone controversial?

      Long signatures are annoying

    • Bill says:

Subban is about as controversial as a picnic. I’ve never heard one quote from the guy that sounded controversial, egotistical, or anything.

    • Marc10 says:

The only controversial thing about PK is his outrageous potential. I’ve had it up to here with this crap and I have to agree… it reeks of racism. PK is one of our best players, popular and charismatic. Is that controversial?

  36. TMan1969 says:

He is not PP defense man..5 on 5 hitting machine…just the basics

  37. Adidess says:

Should we just admit that Emelin kinda sucks?

    • Adidess says:

Ok too harsh on a Valentine’s Day. What i mean is he’s not good in the offensive zone and his positioning is suspect on defense. If he’s not hitting hard like he used to, he becomes very average.

  47. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Who’s going to score first? I pick Armstrong…NOT!

  48. Mondou6 says:

In the “fans” defense…It looks like the Panthers must have an asinine pricing policy. All the seats between the blue lines are completely empty, and the seats outside the blue lines are mostly filled.

Similar to when you watch a NY Yankees game, and all the seats directly behind home plate are empty. They probably cost $500 a seat, and all the other seats are probably like $5 each.

Sports teams should figure out that this pricing makes their product look embarrassing on TV, where most people see it.
